  • SNTP, why do you mock me?!

    --- SOLVED SEE EDIT 5 --- My w2k3 pdc is configured as an authoritative time server. Other servers on the domain are able to sync with it if I manually specify it in the peer list. By if I try to sync from flags 'domhier', it wont resync; I get the error message The computer did not resync because no time data was available. I can only think that it is not querying the pdc. I also tried setting the registry as shown here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193825). But no luck (I have not restarted the server, I am hoping I wont have to since it is the pdc) If you would like any further information on my config, please let me know. Edit 1: I have set the w32time service config AnnouceFlags to 0x05 as documented here www.krr.org/microsoft/authoritative_time_servers.php and a number of other places. The PDC syncs to an external time source (ntp). I can get the stripchart on the client from the pdc no problems. The loginserver for the host I am trying to configure is shown as the pdc. Edit 2: The packet capture has revealed something interesting. The client is contacting the correct server, and getting a valid response but I still get the same error message. Ok so I was reading about people with similar problems, some mentioned w32time server settings applied by GPO, but I tested this early on and there were no settings applied to this service by gpo. Others said that the reporting software may not be picking up some old gpo settings applied. So I searched the registry for all w32time instaces. I came across an interesting key that indicated there may be some other ntp software running on the server. Sure enough, I look through the installed software list and there the little F*&%ER is.   • Automate configuration change on Outlook 2007

    I am migrating a bunch of mailboxes to google apps. Each user owns several mailboxes each serving different domains (john has [email protected], [email protected], and so on...) Currently, those accounts are hosted on (edit:NOT an exchange server) an old SMTP/POP server we want to replace, and I need to edit their outlook 2007 configuration to change the pop, smtp and password parameters. The hard way to do it is to connect to each outlook session and edit the parameters manually. I want to avoid that. Because that represents over 700 accounts spread between 40 users... :'( How can I automate this configuration change ? In the active directory ? Using a PRF file ? note: I'm a linux sysadmin with very little knowledge of windows's black magic.

  • Website hosting from home - IIS6

    I'm wanting to host a few websites from home, primarily because I'm using some BETA Microsoft software (.NET 4 and EF) and don't want to install it on my production server which is hosted at eukhost.com. Basically, I'm completely new to this sort of thing. So far, here is what I've done: Registered the domain name at namecheap.com (let's call it mydomain.com) Gone to "Nameserver Registration" in the panel and entered my IP address for the NS1 and NS2 records (let's say the IP is 0.0.0.0). Gone to "Domain Name Server Setup" and entered ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com Forwarded requests from port 80 to my internal IP (let's say 192.168.1.254) Created the website in IIS (I'm just testing with a single website so far, so have not created any host header values) Now, if I type in the IP address (http://0.0.0.0) I get the site as expected. However, if I enter http://www.mydomain.com I get an error saying "DNS Error - Cannot find server". I'm aware that there is a service from DynDNS that will automatically change the IP if I have a dynamic address, however my IP has remained static since I installed the ISP (since October) so I don't need this. Is there any way that I can get the DNS to work just by configuring IIS or something in Windows? I don't really want to have to pay for any 3rd party service. Thanks,

  • What would cause previously sent emails to be sent again from Exchange the first time someone logs i

    A few users testing our Citrix XenApp service found that several (seemingly random) previously sent emails were sent out immediately after they logged into Outlook via Citrix for the first time. The problem hasn't occurred for them since. After one user had this happen, and we scratched our heads about it thinking it was a fluke, our IT director had this same issue. I guess I'd rule out any PEBKAC issues. I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem. If you have any ideas what could have caused this, I'd appreciate you sharing them, as strange or far-fetched as they may seem :)

  • how to find the clientname of an remote desktop session?

    We have servers on which we run tests and all users connect using the same credentials. The server allows 2 connections. What happens often is that one user is already active and the other two users keep hijacking the remaining session. Using query session, I can find out what are the active connections. But it does not list the client machine from where the session originates, which taskmanager displays. How do I get this information from a remote machine? I prefer a command line solution.     We're using OpsView/Nagios to monitor our servers. We've added the SNMP service to all our servers and deployed the configuration via GPO, but one win2k3 server seems to have a problem; it crashes pretty regularly. The event log carries messages like: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7034 Date: 6/11/2009 Time: 7:11:49 PM User: N/A Computer: HOSTNNAME Description: The SNMP Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). and also Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 6/11/2009 Time: 7:11:18 PM User: N/A Computer: HOSTNAME Description: Faulting application snmp.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x000417af. Now, I could probably set it to simply restart on crash in perpetuity, but I think it's better to fix problems like this. Is this a known problem? If not, what should I do to diagnose it?

  • Excel removing leading leading zeros when displaying CSV data

    I have a CSV text file with the following content: "Col1","Col2" "01",A "2",B "10", C When I open it up with Excel, it displays as shown here: Note that Cell 2A attempts to display "01" as a number without a leading 0. When I format rows 2 through 4 as "Text", it changes the display to ...but still the leading "0" is gone. Is there a way to open up a CSV file in XLS and be able to see all of the leading zeros in the file by flipping some option? I do not want to have to retype '01 in every cell that should have a leading zero. Furthermore, using a leading apostrophe necessitates that the changes be saved to a XLS format when CSV is desired. My goal is simply to use Excel to view the actual content of the file as text without Excel trying to do me any formatting favors.

    Suppose my PATH is C:\WINDOWS\system32\;C:\Program Files\Important\ SET NEW_PATH=C:\My\Dir\ SETX PATH "%PATH%;%NEW_PATH%" Results in a path of: C:\WINDOWS\system32\;C:\Program Files\Important\;C:\My\Dir" Notice the quotation mark at the end of the path. It's as though the backslash at the end of %NEW_PATH% escaped the final quote mark. I need the quotation marks because I have spaces in my path, but I don't want backslashes to be interpreted as escape characters. What's the right way to include my PATH in the call to SETX?

Say, a client needs one 50 GB space on the host( for application) ,two -350 GBs ( for DB and stuff) on the same host and i have 4 raid groups with space of 200 GB in one 50 GB in second and 400 GB and 400GB in rest two all having 5 disks. And , I 'm using Raid 5 only. How do i provision keeping performance in mind( so that performance hit is not there)?..And i need to understand the concept of meta head as well. Please help me by elaborating the above scenario..I am learning to provision storage in non productive environment( b'fore going ahead and working on client prod server) and i have been learning a lot from SF ...I request the seniors here to help me understand it better.   • Moved files only opening as 'read-only' in Excel

    I moved a large directory of Excel files to another machine. When I sign in as myself (administrator signing into domain) then the files open just fine, but when I sign in as a Power User directly onto the machine, the files open as 'Read-Only'. I've reset all the attributes through both Windows and DOS, but to no avail. Also I checked on the Search Indexing bug, but indexing is already turned off. Any ideas?

  • Symantec Gateway Security 320 VPN/Port Forwarding trouble

    How do I check to see if port forward is enabled with one of my dynamic tunnels on this device? I'm having trouble using a feature in our software that requires a vpn to be used. My firewalls shows it as connected but I'm unable to ping the subnet ip. Our software vendor told me that port forwarding might be causing this problem, but I didn't set up this network I'm on and I don't fully know symantec hardware.

  • A network share folder is invisible to users

    I have a network share folder that I was recently cleaning up permissions to. I took off the four individual names from the access permissions to the folder, and added a new security group (Universal) with standard Read/Write permissions to that folder, then added those 4 people to the group. However... now nobody can see the folder. The users can see the other 9 folders in that shared drive, but the 10th is missing. I cannot see any security permission in the parent folder or in the folder itself which would cause it to be invisible to anyone, regardless of whether they have permission to open it or edit files within.

  • IIS6 cannot start additional processes when page request is called from other than localhost

    I have a web application dll that is running under iis6. This is starting a number of processes to be able to handle more than one request at the time. This is working perfect in a numbers of installations. In this particular installation, it runs perfectly when initialized by a call in IE on the server using http://localhost/apppath . The problem is when the processes are from another location, i.e. another computer on the same network initialising the call throught http://servername/apppath . In this case, the initial dll running under iis is executing (proved by logging), but it fails to initialize the additional processes. If the additional processes are already initialized by a call from localhost, it also works when called from another machine (in this case, it is just attached to the existing processes).

    How do I get Excel to partially auto-complete a word using another that already exist in the same worksheet? Let's say I have the word "Microsoft" in a cell and in the cell below I want to type the word "Microhard". When I start typing Microhard, the word Microsoft appears shaded in black. How can I select the "Micro" part alone from Microsoft and continue to fill out the rest with "hard" without it trying to fill out as Microsoft?

  • Why is a SUBST'd drive inaccessible via shortcut or Run menu, but works fine from My Computer?

    I have shortcuts to C:, D:, and E: in my quick launch bar. C and E work fine when I click on them, but D does nothing (that I can see) when I click on it. D and E are both SUBST'd drives pointing to folders that happen to be network shares. (I do this rather than mapping them so it doesn't have to go through the network layer--that way it works faster and I still get recycle bin functionality, etc.) If I go Start-Run and type D: or D:\, I get an error box saying This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. If I go to My Computer and double-click the D drive, it comes up fine. Also, if I type \\servername\sharename pointing to the same place, it comes up fine. This just started happening this morning, out of the blue. It has been working fine ever since I set it up. Why might this be?

    It seems like a large number of security groups have been deleted from the organization's AD. i was able to find the tombstones but i see there 1400 objects from the last 180 days and i know for certain that the important groups which have been deleted, have been deleted somewhere between yesterday's night and now. Is there a way, maybe by using power shell to extract the names of all objects which have been deleted through out the night? Thanks in advance Itai

  • Allow READ access to local folders in 2003SBS AD

    Have a SBS2003 client with a mess of a domain that is in process of being cleaned. But, for the life of me I cannot find a setting that will allow write access to the local hard disk for domain users with redirected profiles(to the server). This is needed only for one program that will not follow a symbolic link to the network path, instead it seems to be hard coded to the %appdata% folder but only on the c: drive.... So question is how can I allow "Domain users" write access to the local %appdata% directory? I have tried setting it manually on a machine but it kept resetting to RO no matter how many times I tried. Everytime I would uncheck the RO property it would reset sometime right after i hit OK.   • Unattended install of IIS 6 with PHP / FastCGI

    I'm trying to figure out the best method of installing PHP on IIS 6 unattended. I've figured that to install IIS 6 unattended I need to use sysocmgr and modify a registry key before hand to point at the correct sources folder to prevent being asked for an installation disc. The bit I'm caught up on at the moment is the process of installing FastCGI. The info I've read about installing FastCGI so far is that the installer unpacks 3 files and "registers" them with IIS. Question is, does anyone know what happens with these three files so I can handle it without using the installer? Also, if anyone has experience with the steps I need to take following the FastCGI install, I'd appreciate help.

  • Can you have a WMI query for GPO Filter based on user's OU?

    I'm wondering if there is a way to have a WMI query check the OU of the user logging on. I'd like a GPO (linked to Citrix servers OU) to apply only to users if the user is in a certain OU - this is for Citrix so the overly obvious answer of - well just link it to the OU the user is in does not apply. This also cannot be done using security groups because a long time ago those started to get used as Distribution Groups also and now too many are widely inaccurate. Lastly I need to apply this to the entire GPO as there are more than just group policy preferences included so I can't use the item-level targeting feature either. But my OUs are accurate so I'd like to use those if I can. I'd like a WMI query filter to say, apply GPO if user is member of OU 'x' that doable?
