• does windows incremental backup include system state backup?

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

  What access rights should an employee grant an employer for a work computer? For instance, let's assume that the business people come to the IT lab late at night for discussions with the CIO and they use my computer for reading email and general web surfing. In a sense, this means that they are taking full or partial responsibility for any security issues that crop up that get traced back to the employee's machine. Perhaps the proper way to provide a computer to an employee is to give him full and exclusive use of it while employed. Only supervised access (such as hardware/software maintenance) should be acceptable.

• Meaning of tcp_delack_min

  Hi, the current Linux Kernel (e.g. 2.6.36) uses Delayed Acknowledgments (delack). In /include/net/tcp.h it says: define TCP_DELACK_MIN ((unsigned)(HZ/25)) So, for a Kernel using a HZ value of 1000, an ACK should be delayed by a minimum of 40 ms. However, RFC 2581 says a TCP implementation should acknowledge every second full sized segment without further delay. Does anybody know whether the Linux Kernel follows that 'should' or whether the TCP_DELACK_MIN value means that even after a full sized segment was received, the ACK continues to be delayed until 40 ms have passed?

  Using my private key to do so, this command allows me to connect to /home/backupUser/backup just fine: $ sudo sftp -oPort=7843 [email protected]:backup However when I run duplicity, I get the following error: duplicity full --exclude ... / scp://backupUser:[email protected]:7843:/backup bash: [email protected]:7843./backup: No such file or directory I'm under the assumption that duplicity would interpret the /backup path as relative to the user's home directory. But since the above command didn't work, I also tried leaving off the / in the backup directory at the end of the command, i.e. duplicity full --exclude ... / scp://backupUser:[email protected]:7843:backup bash: [email protected]:7843:backup: command not found Is there something I'm missing here, like adding the passcode for the private key to make this command work?

• XAML RadControls are out with Q1 2010 SP1

  Our main focus with Q1 2010 SP1 release is the official launch of RadControls for Silverlight 4 RTW. Shortly after the official announcement on April 15th we delivered the natively built suite on Silverlight 4 to empower our clients with the advantages of the new capabilities for developing robust enterprise applications. The suite features support for both Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010. With Q1 2010 SP1 we have delivered installations for both Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4. Well keep the support for Silverlight 3 with full installations until the Q2 2010 release and after that will ship upgrades only with binaries. The binaries for Silverlight 3 will contain only major bug fixes but wont include new features. This support will be discontinued with our Q3 release when we believe the full adoption of VS 2010 and Silverlight 4 will be completed. • Developing my momentum on open source projects

  Hi I've been struggling to develop momentum contributing to open source projects. I have in the past tried with gcc and contributed a fix to libstdc++ but it was a once off and even though I spent months in my spare time on the dev mailing list and reading through things I just never seemed to develop any momentum with the code. Eventually I unsubscribed and got my free time back and uncluttered my mailbox. Like a lot of people I have some little open source defunct projects lying around on the net, but they're not large and I'm the only contributor. At the moment I'm more interested in contributing to a large open source project and want to know how people got started because I find it difficult while working full time to develop any momentum with the code base. Other more regular contributors, who are on the project full-time, are able to make changes at will and as result enter that positive feedback cycle where they understand the code and also know where it's heading. It makes the barrier to entry higher for those that come along later. My questions are to people who actively contribute to large opensource projects, like the Linux kernel, or gcc or clang/llvm or anything else with say a developer head count of more than 10. How did you get started? Was there a large chunk of time in your life that you just could dedicate to working on the project? I know in Linus's case he had a chunk of time (6 months) to get it started. What barriers to entry did you encounter? Can you describe the initial stages of the time spent with the project, from when you had little understanding of the code to when you understood enough to commit regularly. Thanks

  At my new job, I have a production server with the following qualities: Windows (XP I think), ancient hardware Absolutely vital database No backups whatsoever Everyone in the company has full admin rights, the passwords are stored in a .txt on the global share No installers, except for the OS The machine itself is sitting on a wooden shelf 5 feet above the ground against an external wall with frequent truck traffic on the other side; the shelf is already bent from the constant load Hasn't been rebooted in $DEITY knows how long, my predecessor wasn't even sure if it would survive it UPS is installed, but since everything is hooked up to it, it would last 10 minutes tops No spare parts or hardware budget How do I make a full backup with minimal impact on the server? I'm not sure how close it is to a total meltdown. For all I know, plugging in a USB stick could kill the company, and of course it will be all my fault, since "it was running fine before you touched it". The ideal solution would be a VM, so I have a test environment as well (separate of course).

• How do I stop cropping in iMovie?

  I'm not certain if 'crop' is the right term. I'm new to iMovie so I may have some of the terminology wrong. When I import a movie, I allow it to resize to the recommended settings instead of full size. Then I drag it from the lower event pane into the project pane. In the 'preview' pane where the movie can be played, the top and bottom of the movie are cut off a little. It's like its converting it to widescreen by cutting off the top and bottom. After I publish the movie in mobile format (it won't allow any larger) it still has the top and bottom removed. How can I stop this? I even tried importing full (original) size and it still didn't help.

• Why is ext3 so slow to delete large files?

  I have a server, which makes an incremental backup of a system every night. Now on saturdays, there is a full backup. But after the full backup has finished, a script kicks in, that deletes the incrementals. Now, the script sometimes breaks, and it is because the incrementals are each about 10GB files, and sometimes takes too long for the script. Now could someone explain to me, or point me in the direction of a resource, that explains why ext3 is so slow to delete files, when compared to, lets say, NTFS? I know theses are 2 completely different file systems, but I'm really interested why is there such a big difference in deletion?

• people_dl_import shows millions of records

  We have a situation now on prod in sharepoint 2007 based intranet platform and it shows thousands of records under people_dl_import category with format spsimport://?$$dl$$/domain1/domain2/domain3/ Also import was not stopping and added millions of records in database and was on verge of disk full. On other servers like dev we have very less data in this category and format is also like spsimport://doaminname?$$dl$$?... which is good and has only 6000 rows and in prod its 2 millions Crawled under people_dl_import category. I need to know the cause of this garbage data and how to fix it. I tried resetting content source and I will do full import in this weekend to see if this garbage data gets cleared. Any idea on cause for thiss issue?

• How can I incrementally backup a large amount of data [with rsync]?

  A website contains ~40GB images + files which needs to be backed up. Rollbacks need to be possible daily for the last 30 days. And backup server < 1.2TB My idea is to have one full backup from 30 days ago, then incremental backups for the last 30 days. On each day the last incremental backup is combined with the full backup and a new incremental backup is added. Can this strategy be implemented with rsync, if so how? Are there any problems with this plan? A better plan? PS: Incremental backups, not backup incrementally (which rsync does automatically)

And i expect a new domain name. So i have addded a new zone called hello.com and checked SOA server (P) is one.hello.local. then added a new host called one, full name is one.hello.com, ip address 192.168.7.3(my address in router) and then add a alias(CNAME) www, full name is www.hello.com, FQDN i choose the host i added before (one.hello.com) i expected that when i type the public ip in browser, can it be changed to domain name automatically. if not set host value www.hello.com, use public ip i can see the web however, after set up host value www.hello.com, browser show bad request invalid hostname

• Advanced TSQL training

  Over the past few years, Ive had it on my to do list to write and deliver and full-scale SQLServer training course and not just an hour long bite size session at user groups and conferences.  To me, SQLServer development is not just knowing and remembering the syntax of commands.  Sometimes I semi-jest that i have “Written a merge statement without looking up the syntax”, but I know from my interactions on and off line that I am far from alone in this.  In any case we have an awesome tool in the internet which is great at looking things up. When developing SQL Server based solutions,  of more importance is knowing the internals of the engine.  SQL Server is a complex piece of software and we need to be able to understand to a fairly low level ( you can always dive deeper ) the choices that it makes and why it makes them in order to deliver performant, reliable, predictable and scalable systems to our customers and end-users. • Unable to create suitable graphics device?

  I've been following the Eye of the Dragon tutorial, which is basicly a guide to making a 2D RPG game, obviously. I recently finished the tutorial about making pop up screens in the menu and changed the screen to load as a full screen. Whenever I try and load the game it just goes black and my mouse sits there. I cannot change out of it other then with CtrlAltDel. Once i do that it says No suitable graphics card found, unable to create graphics device. I read somewhere about XNA not allowing more then one screen when any one of them is full screen. but it wasnt very informative. Anyone have any ideas whats going on and/or how to fix this? • Can't delete folder and I am admin. "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from..."

  I can't delete a certain folder in windows 7. It's not a system folder. It was created by an app. I get an error message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Tony....". I am an admin and logged in as myself Tony. I have full ownership of the folder with full control permission. I rebooted the machine. I killed the app which created the folder. I am out of ideas. Why is Windows 7 not letting me delete the folder?
