• In windows xp, how can I set the default browser from chrome to IE via Command Line, without admin privs

  Situation: 1. Need to Set the defualt browser to IE via cmd(problem) 2. Need to do a citrix login via IE(amounts to loading a url) beause it wont run in google chrome 3. then set default browser to chrome Environment: Windows XP, no admin priv's no admin priv's mean I can't touch registry Basic Steps I'm Doing: In a bat file: 1.Set default browser to IE 2.run a citrix SSO login via IE (not compatible with chrome) 3.Set default browser to Chrome 4.kill IE 5.live long and prosper So i have it all running except "Set default browser to IE" I can set the default browser to chome by using portable chrome's cmd line argument --make-default-browser but I can't undo that process. If I launch IE, it pops up that 'make ie default browser' window which stops the SSO process. So If I can disable that check via bat file, that would also work for me. Things i've tried that didn't work: shmgrate.exe OCInstallReinstallIE We are using IE8 Maybe someone can find a chrome switch that undoes default browser: http://peter.sh/experiments/chromium-command-line-switches/ thanks for the help guy's

• Supporting copy 'n paste in your Windows Phone app

  Some Windows Phone 7 owners already have the NoDo update, and others are getting it soon. This update brings, among other things, copy & paste support for text boxes. The user taps on a piece of text (and can drag in either direction to select more/less words), a popup icon appears that when tapped copies the text to the clipboard, and then at any app that shows the soft input panel there is an icon option to paste the copied text into the associated textbox. For more read this 'how to'. Note that there is no programmatic access to the clipboard, only the end user experience I just summarized, so there is nothing you need to do for your app's textboxes to support copy & paste: it just works. The only issue may be if in your app you use static TextBlock controls, for which the copy support will not appear, of course. That was the case with my Translator by Moth app where the translated text appears in a TextBlock. So, I wanted the user to be able to copy directly from the translated text (without offering an editable TextBox for an area where user input does not make sense). Take a look at a screenshot of my app before I made any changes to it. I then made changes to it preserving the look and feel, yet with additional copy support (see screenshot on the right)! So how did I achieve that? Simply by using my co-author's template (thanks Peter!): Copyable TextBlock for Windows Phone.   (aside: in my app even without this change there is a workaround, the user could use the "swap" feature to swap the source and target, so they can copy from the text box) Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

• Windows Server 2008R2 IIS7.5, Requests getting 401 status

  We have a web site running in windows server 2008r2 iis7.5 and we are seeing several errors reported from our global error handler saying that "Request Timed Out". I matched up one to the IIS log file and see the request took 135116 (presumably milliseconds) had an sc-status of 401 an sc-sub0status of 0 and an sc-win32-status of 64. 2 requests failed in these way but lots of surrounding requests (1979 successful requests vs 2 fails) for the same user went through perfectly fine- with the same cs-username which makes a 401 seem a little odd. The target of the requests is an ASP.Net web service's web method called by the .net client library- it's called a lot of times per user (3 times per second) to keep a page updated. We're getting some users reportng seeing a freezing effect and I think this may be the cause, any ideas? Peter

  To complete the picture, let's use the traditional (that is, old) Hibernate mechanism, i.e., via XML files, rather than via the annotations shown yesterday. It's definitely trickier, with many more places where typos can occur, but that's why it's the old mechanism. I do not recommend this approach. I recommend the approach shown yesterday. The other players in this scenario include PostgreSQL, as outlined in the previous blog entries in this series. • Not booting from USB or CD (SYSLINUX Message)

  I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get. SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al With the CD it will start booting it but somewhere loading it up, the dots turn all orange and stay that way and my CD drive turns quiet. Oh and some more info the images work because I tried loading them up on another pc and it worked just fine. I manage to get the CD to boot I just had to let me pc boot up first then insert the CD and have it boot the CD then. Once I get done installing ubuntu it works fine but I have to leave the PC on 24/7 for if I turn it off the PC will freeze 5-10 seconds after booting back up no matter how I install it.

• How to achieve a loosely coupled REST API but with a defined and well understood contract?

  I am new to REST and am struggling to understand how one would properly design a REST system to both allow for loose coupling but at the same time allow a consumer of a REST API to understand the API. If, in my client code, I issue a GET request for a resource and get back XML, how do I know what to do with that xml? e.g. if it contains <fname>John</fname><lname>Smith</lname> how do I know that these refer to the concept of "first name", "last name"? Is it up to the person writing the REST API to define in documentation some place what each of the XML fields mean? What if producer of the API wants to change the implementation to be <firstname> instead of <fname>? How do they do this and notify their consumers that this change occurred? Or do the consumers just encounter the error and then look at the payload and figure out on their own that it changed? I've read in REST in Practice that using a WADL tool to create a client implementation based on the WADL (and hide the fact that you're doing a distributed call) is an "anti-pattern". But I was planning to do this-- at least then I would have a statically typed API call that, if it changed, I would know at compile time and not at run time. Why is this a bad thing to generate client code based on a WADL? And how do I know what to do with the links that returned in the response of a POST to a REST API? What defines this contract and gives true meaning to what each link will do? Please help! I dont understand how to go from statically-typed or even SOAP/RPC to REST!

• HTML5 data-* (custom data attribute)

  Goal: Store custom data with the data attribute on any DOM element and retrieve it. Previously under HTML4 we used to use classes to store custom data, something to the affect of <input class="account void limit-5000 over-4999" /> and then have to parse the data out of the class In a book published by Peter-Paul Koch in 2007, ppk on JavaScript, he explains why and how to use custom attributes to make data more accessible to JavaScript, using name-value pairs. Accessing a custom attribute account-limit=5000 is much easier and more intuitive than trying to parse it out of a class, Plus, what if the class name for example "color-5" has a representative class definition in a CSS stylesheet that hides it away or worse some JavaScript plugin that automatically adds 5000 to it, or something crazy like that, just because it is a valid class name. As you can see there are quite a few reasons why using classes is a bad design and why it was important to define custom data attributes in HTML5. Syntax: You define the data attribute by simply prefixing any data item you want to store with any HTML element with "data-". For example to store our customers account data with a hidden input element: <input type="hidden" data-account="void" data-limit=5000 data-over=4999  /> How to access the data: account  -     element.dataset.account limit    -     element.dataset.limit You can also access it by using the more traditional get/setAttribute method or if using jQuery $('#element').attr('data-account','void') Browser support: All except for IE. There is an IE hack around this at http://gist.github.com/362081. Special Note: Be AWARE, do not use upper-case when defining your data elements as it is all converted to lower-case when reading it, so: data-myAccount="A1234" will not be found when you read it with: element.dataset.myAccount Use only lowercase when reading so this will work: element.dataset.myaccount

• How can I move mysites to a new location

  I recently restored my content and was instructed to create mysites in a different location than was originally used. Now I have several users mysites in /personal. The new desired location is /mysites. From what I found in the documentation I should back them up and restore them to the new location. Here's what I've done: Backup individual site collection for user mysite stsadm -o backup -url "https://myUrl/personal/john_smith" -filename johnsmith.bkup Restore individual site collection for user mysite stsadm -o restore -url "https://myUrl/mysites/john_smith" -filename johnsmith.bkup -overwrite The result of this and the problem is when i enumerate sites i end up with this: <Site Url="https://myUrl/mysites" Owner="domainname\john.smith" ContentDatabase="WSS_Content_MySites" StorageUsedMB="1.6" StorageWarningMB="90000" StorageMaxMB="100000" /> it leaves off the username part of the url. and if I restore more that one they want to overwrite each other.

• Cannot restart Ubuntu after replacing Unity with Gnome and purging lightdm

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10. I used the directions here to replace Unity with Gnome. It seemed to work fine until the end of step 2 when I rebooted the computer. When I chose the default option, I just got a black screen. When I choose the restore option and then "Restore normal boot" I get Starting load fallback graphics devices [fail] Starting GNOME Display Manager [ok] Starting Userspace bootsplash [ok] Stopping GNOME Display Manager [ok] Stopping Userspace bootsplash [ok] Starting web server apach22 [fail] (among a lot of OKs) It finally gets to Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ok] where it hangs. I left it overnight and just had a blank screen when I checked it in the morning. I can "Drop to root shell prompt" and "Drop to root shell prompt with networking". I did see here that one should be able to fix the problem by choosing remount and then doing apt-get install lightdm I tried this as root shell with and without networking and got the message Err http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneric-updates/main lightdm i386 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.7 Could not resolve 'us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu' What is the best way to resolve this problem? I wrote my first compiler when I was 15 (Pascal to TRS Z-80!), although my most famous compiler is the HotSpot Server Compiler (the Sea of Nodes IR). I helped Azul Systems build an 864 core pure-Java mainframe that keeps GC pauses on 500Gb heaps to under 10ms, and worked on all aspects of that JVM. Before that I worked on HotSpot at Sun Microsystems, and am at least partially responsible for bringing Java into the mainstream. I am invited to speak regularly at industry and academic conferences and has published many papers about HotSpot technology. • Exchange Server Contact Categories - How to Remove/Update All

  I've been tasked with cleaning up our companies contact database sitting on our Exchange Server 2003. The rub is this database of contacts has been neglected for the past couple of years and is now a bit messy. My issue is I have say a person named 'Bob Smith', and Bob is listed in multiple categories, 'Students' and 'Student'. I would really like to remove the 'Student' category from Bob and anyone else out there that has the same category. My question is, is there an easy way to edit the master category lists for contacts on the exchange server? I feel like I am missing something simple here since if I were playing with the categories that I use, to say organize email its very easy to do so, but I can't seem to find the proper way to do it for categories that are up on the server. I'm attempting to work through Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003. Any insight would be very helpful as I really don't want to change 8000+ contacts by hand.

• Let Devoxx 2011 begin!

  Devoxx 2011 is kicking off today and Oracle will be well represented for all its Java efforts. Here's a quick rundown of the Java EE and GlassFish side of things. Cameron Purdy, now responsible for the entire Oracle middleware stack (WebLogic, GlassFish, TopLink, Coherence) will host the Java EE keynote, mostly focused on Java EE 7. There will be sessions on individual JSRs by spec leads : Nigel Deakin for JMS 2.0, Marek Potociar for JAX-RS 2.0, and Greg Luck (EHCache) for JSR107 / javax.cache. Oracle's Shaun Smith will also cover JPA 2.1 with some of the unique EclipseLink features such as multi-tenancy. BOFs on Java EE.next and CDI are also planned during the week. Finally, Arun Gupta will be delivering a complete Java EE 6 hands-on lab. There will also be GlassFish-related sessions. A first one will focus on the current state of the community and product (3.1.x) with customers production stories, while GlassFish architect Jerome Dochez will walk you through the enhancements the team is working on for Java EE 7 and GlassFish 4 - virtualization, PaaS, elasticity and more. Last but not least, our good friends from Serli will discuss their latest GlassFish contributions on Application versioning and high-availability rolling upgrades.

  I have been tasked with investigating the Guidance available around Visual Studio 2010 for one of our customers and it makes sense to make this available to everyone. The official guidance around Visual Studio 2010 has been created by the Visual Studio ALM Rangers and is a brew of a bunch of really clever guys experiences working with the tools and customers. I will be creating a series of posts on the different guidance options as many people still do not know about them even though Willy-Peter Schaub has done a fantastic job of making sure they get the recognition they deserve. There is a full list of all of the Rangers Solutions and Projects on MSDN, but I wanted to add my own point of view to the usefulness of each one. If you don’t know who the rangers are you should have a look at the Visual Studio ALM Rangers Index to see the full breadth of where the rangers are. • Inverted LACK Table Serves as a Perfect Gear Rack [DIY]

  We’ve seen IKEA gear hacked to hold audio and computer gear before, but this mod adds in a simple and effective twist. LACK end tables are, conveniently, the same width as a standard server rack. This makes it super simple for DIYers to mount their gear right into the legs of the table with no modification necessary. In this case, however, Winston Smith included a clever update to the mod. Rather than leave it like a standard table, he flipped the table upside down for increased stability and a stronger connection between the legs of his improvised audio rack and the table-top-turned-floor-plate. He then finished it with a matching LACK shelf piece to serve as a turn-table stand. His gear is stored cleanly, off the floor, and in a sturdy container all for about $25–a definite bargain when it comes to storage racks. Hit up the link below for more information and pictures.
