  • Is there an API to remotely read a Windows machine's audit configuration?

    - by JCCyC
    I need to know, for each subcategory, whether it'll be audited on success, on failure, both, or none. Below is an example of the information I need to collect. Can I get this through WMI? Or if not, by other means, assuming I have proper (admin) credentials to the target machine? Again, to clarify, it's not the event log I need to read, it's the logging configuration. <security_state_change>AUDIT_SUCCESS</security_state_change> <security_system_extension>AUDIT_NONE</security_system_extension> <system_integrity>AUDIT_SUCCESS_FAILURE</system_integrity> <ipsec_driver>AUDIT_NONE</ipsec_driver> <other_system_events>AUDIT_SUCCESS_FAILURE</other_system_events> <logon>AUDIT_SUCCESS</logon> <logoff>AUDIT_SUCCESS</logoff> <account_lockout>AUDIT_SUCCESS</account_lockout> <ipsec_main_mode>AUDIT_NONE</ipsec_main_mode> <ipsec_quick_mode>AUDIT_NONE</ipsec_quick_mode> <ipsec_extended_mode>AUDIT_NONE</ipsec_extended_mode> <special_logon>AUDIT_SUCCESS</special_logon> <other_logon_logoff_events>AUDIT_NONE</other_logon_logoff_events> <file_system>AUDIT_NONE</file_system> <registry>AUDIT_NONE</registry> <kernel_object>AUDIT_NONE</kernel_object> <sam>AUDIT_NONE</sam> <certification_services>AUDIT_NONE</certification_services> <application_generated>AUDIT_NONE</application_generated> <handle_manipulation>AUDIT_NONE</handle_manipulation> <file_share>AUDIT_NONE</file_share> <filtering_platform_packet_drop>AUDIT_NONE</filtering_platform_packet_drop> <filtering_platform_connection>AUDIT_NONE</filtering_platform_connection> <other_object_access_events>AUDIT_NONE</other_object_access_events> <sensitive_privilege_use>AUDIT_NONE</sensitive_privilege_use> <non_sensitive_privlege_use>AUDIT_NONE</non_sensitive_privlege_use> <other_privlege_use_events>AUDIT_NONE</other_privlege_use_events> <process_creation>AUDIT_NONE</process_creation> <process_termination>AUDIT_NONE</process_termination> <dpapi_activity>AUDIT_NONE</dpapi_activity> <rpc_events>AUDIT_NONE</rpc_events> <audit_policy_change>AUDIT_SUCCESS</audit_policy_change> <authentication_policy_change>AUDIT_SUCCESS</authentication_policy_change> <authorization_policy_change>AUDIT_NONE</authorization_policy_change> <mpssvc_rule_level_policy_change>AUDIT_NONE</mpssvc_rule_level_policy_change> <filtering_platform_policy_change>AUDIT_NONE</filtering_platform_policy_change> <other_policy_change_events>AUDIT_NONE</other_policy_change_events> <user_account_management>AUDIT_SUCCESS</user_account_management> <computer_account_management>AUDIT_NONE</computer_account_management> <security_group_management>AUDIT_SUCCESS</security_group_management> <distribution_group_management>AUDIT_NONE</distribution_group_management> <application_group_management>AUDIT_NONE</application_group_management> <other_account_management_events>AUDIT_NONE</other_account_management_events> <directory_service_access>AUDIT_NONE</directory_service_access> <directory_service_changes>AUDIT_NONE</directory_service_changes> <directory_service_replication>AUDIT_NONE</directory_service_replication> <detailed_directory_service_replication>AUDIT_NONE</detailed_directory_service_replication> <credential_validation>AUDIT_NONE</credential_validation> <kerberos_ticket_events>AUDIT_NONE</kerberos_ticket_events> <other_account_logon_events>AUDIT_NONE</other_account_logon_events>

  • Something is making my page perform an Ajax call multiple times... [read: I've never been more frust

    - by Jack Webb-Heller
NOTE: This is a long question. I've explained all the 'basics' at the top and then there's some further (optional) information for if you need it. Hi folks Basically last night this started happening at about 9PM whilst I was trying to restructure my code to make it a bit nicer for the designer to add a few bits to. I tried to fix it until 2AM at which point I gave up. Came back to it this morning, still baffled. I'll be honest with you, I'm a pretty bad Javascript developer. Since starting this project Javascript has been completely new to me and I've just learn as I went along. So please forgive me if my code structure is really bad (perhaps give a couple of pointers on how to improve it?). So, to the problem: to reproduce it, visit http://furnace.howcode.com (it's far from complete). This problem is a little confusing but I'd really appreciate the help. So in the second column you'll see three tabs The 'Newest' tab is selected by default. Scroll to the bottom, and 3 further results should be dynamically fetched via Ajax. Now click on the 'Top Rated' tab. You'll see all the results, but ordered by rating Scroll to the bottom of 'Top Rated'. You'll see SIX results returned. This is where it goes wrong. Only a further three should be returned (there are 18 entries in total). If you're observant you'll notice two 'blocks' of 3 returned. The first 'block' is the second page of results from the 'Newest' tab. The second block is what I just want returned. Did that make any sense? Never mind! So basically I checked this out in Firebug. What happens is, from a 'Clean' page (first load, nothing done) it calls ONE POST request to http://furnace.howcode.com/code/loadmore . But every time you load a new one of the tabs, it makes an ADDITIONAL POST request each time where there should normally only be ONE. So, can you help me? I'd really appreciate it! At this point you could start independent investigation or read on for a little further (optional) information. Thanks! Jack Further Info (may be irrelevant but here for reference): It's almost like there's some Javascript code or something being left behind that duplicates it each time. I thought it might be this code that I use to detect when the browser is scrolled to the bottom: var col = $('#col2'); col.scroll(function(){ if (col.outerHeight() == (col.get(0).scrollHeight - col.scrollTop())) loadMore(1); }); So what I thought was that code was left behind, and so every time you scroll #col2 (which contains different data for each tab) it detected that and added it for #newest as well. So, I made each tab click give #col2 a dynamic class - either .newestcol, .featuredcol, or .topratedcol. And then I changed the var col=$('.newestcol');dynamically so it would only detect it individually for each tab (makin' any sense?!). But hey, that didn't do anything. Another useful tidbit: here's the PHP for http://furnace.howcode.com/code/loadmore: $kind = $this->input->post('kind'); if ($kind == 1){ // kind is 1 - newest $start = $this->input->post('currentpage'); $data['query'] = "SELECT code.id AS codeid, code.title AS codetitle, code.summary AS codesummary, code.author AS codeauthor, code.rating AS rating, code.date, code_tags.*, tags.*, users.firstname AS authorname, users.id AS authorid, GROUP_CONCAT(tags.tag SEPARATOR ', ') AS taggroup FROM code, code_tags, tags, users WHERE users.id = code.author AND code_tags.code_id = code.id AND tags.id = code_tags.tag_id GROUP BY code_id ORDER BY date DESC LIMIT $start, 15 "; $this->load->view('code/ajaxlist',$data); } elseif ($kind == 2) { // kind is 2 - featured So my jQuery code sends a variable 'kind'. If it's 1, it runs the query for Newest, etc. etc. The PHP code for furnace.howcode.com/code/ajaxlist is: <?php // Our query base // SELECT * FROM code ORDER BY date DESC $query = $this->db->query($query); foreach($query->result() as $row) { ?> <script type="text/javascript"> $('#title-<?php echo $row->codeid;?>').click(function() { var form_data = { id: <?php echo $row->codeid; ?> }; $('#col3').fadeOut('slow', function() { $.ajax({ url: "<?php echo site_url('code/viewajax');?>", type: 'POST', data: form_data, success: function(msg) { $('#col3').html(msg); $('#col3').fadeIn('fast'); } }); }); }); </script> <div class="result"> <div class="resulttext"> <div id="title-<?php echo $row->codeid; ?>" class="title"> <?php echo anchor('#',$row->codetitle); ?> </div> <div class="summary"> <?php echo $row->codesummary; ?> </div> <!-- Now insert the 5-star rating system --> <?php include($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']."/fivestars/5star.php");?> <div class="bottom"> <div class="author"> Submitted by <?php echo anchor('auth/profile/'.$row->authorid,''.$row->authorname);?> </div> <?php // Now we need to take the GROUP_CONCATted tags and split them using the magic of PHP into seperate tags $tagarray = explode(", ", $row->taggroup); foreach ($tagarray as $tag) { ?> <div class="tagbutton" href="#"> <span><?php echo $tag; ?></span> </div> <?php } ?> </div> </div> </div> <?php } echo "&nbsp;";?> <script type="text/javascript"> var newpage = <?php echo $this->input->post('currentpage') + 15;?>; </script> So that's everything in PHP. The rest you should be able to view with Firebug or by viewing the Source code. I've put all the Tab/clicking/Ajaxloading bits in the tags at the very bottom. There's a comment before it all kicks off. Thanks so much for your help!

  • Traditional IO vs memory-mapped

    - by Senne
    I'm trying to illustrate the difference in performance between traditional IO and memory mapped files in java to students. I found an example somewhere on internet but not everything is clear to me, I don't even think all steps are nececery. I read a lot about it here and there but I'm not convinced about a correct implementation of neither of them. The code I try to understand is: public class FileCopy{ public static void main(String args[]){ if (args.length < 1){ System.out.println(" Wrong usage!"); System.out.println(" Correct usage is : java FileCopy <large file with full path>"); System.exit(0); } String inFileName = args[0]; File inFile = new File(inFileName); if (inFile.exists() != true){ System.out.println(inFileName + " does not exist!"); System.exit(0); } try{ new FileCopy().memoryMappedCopy(inFileName, inFileName+".new" ); new FileCopy().customBufferedCopy(inFileName, inFileName+".new1"); }catch(FileNotFoundException fne){ fne.printStackTrace(); }catch(IOException ioe){ ioe.printStackTrace(); }catch (Exception e){ e.printStackTrace(); } } public void memoryMappedCopy(String fromFile, String toFile ) throws Exception{ long timeIn = new Date().getTime(); // read input file RandomAccessFile rafIn = new RandomAccessFile(fromFile, "rw"); FileChannel fcIn = rafIn.getChannel(); ByteBuffer byteBuffIn = fcIn.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0,(int) fcIn.size()); fcIn.read(byteBuffIn); byteBuffIn.flip(); RandomAccessFile rafOut = new RandomAccessFile(toFile, "rw"); FileChannel fcOut = rafOut.getChannel(); ByteBuffer writeMap = fcOut.map(FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE,0,(int) fcIn.size()); writeMap.put(byteBuffIn); long timeOut = new Date().getTime(); System.out.println("Memory mapped copy Time for a file of size :" + (int) fcIn.size() +" is "+(timeOut-timeIn)); fcOut.close(); fcIn.close(); } static final int CHUNK_SIZE = 100000; static final char[] inChars = new char[CHUNK_SIZE]; public static void customBufferedCopy(String fromFile, String toFile) throws IOException{ long timeIn = new Date().getTime(); Reader in = new FileReader(fromFile); Writer out = new FileWriter(toFile); while (true) { synchronized (inChars) { int amountRead = in.read(inChars); if (amountRead == -1) { break; } out.write(inChars, 0, amountRead); } } long timeOut = new Date().getTime(); System.out.println("Custom buffered copy Time for a file of size :" + (int) new File(fromFile).length() +" is "+(timeOut-timeIn)); in.close(); out.close(); } } When exactly is it nececary to use RandomAccessFile? Here it is used to read and write in the memoryMappedCopy, is it actually nececary just to copy a file at all? Or is it a part of memorry mapping? In customBufferedCopy, why is synchronized used here? I also found a different example that -should- test the performance between the 2: public class MappedIO { private static int numOfInts = 4000000; private static int numOfUbuffInts = 200000; private abstract static class Tester { private String name; public Tester(String name) { this.name = name; } public long runTest() { System.out.print(name + ": "); try { long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); test(); long endTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); return (endTime - startTime); } catch (IOException e) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } public abstract void test() throws IOException; } private static Tester[] tests = { new Tester("Stream Write") { public void test() throws IOException { DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream( new BufferedOutputStream( new FileOutputStream(new File("temp.tmp")))); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) dos.writeInt(i); dos.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Write") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new RandomAccessFile("temp.tmp", "rw") .getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) ib.put(i); fc.close(); } }, new Tester("Stream Read") { public void test() throws IOException { DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream( new BufferedInputStream( new FileInputStream("temp.tmp"))); for(int i = 0; i < numOfInts; i++) dis.readInt(); dis.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Read") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new FileInputStream( new File("temp.tmp")).getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_ONLY, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); while(ib.hasRemaining()) ib.get(); fc.close(); } }, new Tester("Stream Read/Write") { public void test() throws IOException { RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile( new File("temp.tmp"), "rw"); raf.writeInt(1); for(int i = 0; i < numOfUbuffInts; i++) { raf.seek(raf.length() - 4); raf.writeInt(raf.readInt()); } raf.close(); } }, new Tester("Mapped Read/Write") { public void test() throws IOException { FileChannel fc = new RandomAccessFile( new File("temp.tmp"), "rw").getChannel(); IntBuffer ib = fc.map( FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, fc.size()) .asIntBuffer(); ib.put(0); for(int i = 1; i < numOfUbuffInts; i++) ib.put(ib.get(i - 1)); fc.close(); } } }; public static void main(String[] args) { for(int i = 0; i < tests.length; i++) System.out.println(tests[i].runTest()); } } I more or less see whats going on, my output looks like this: Stream Write: 653 Mapped Write: 51 Stream Read: 651 Mapped Read: 40 Stream Read/Write: 14481 Mapped Read/Write: 6 What is makeing the Stream Read/Write so unbelievably long? And as a read/write test, to me it looks a bit pointless to read the same integer over and over (if I understand well what's going on in the Stream Read/Write) Wouldn't it be better to read int's from the previously written file and just read and write ints on the same place? Is there a better way to illustrate it? I've been breaking my head about a lot of these things for a while and I just can't get the whole picture..

  • Apache strace to hunt down a memory leak

    - by Zipp
    We have a server with a memory issue: the server keeps allocating itself memory and doesn't release it. We're running Apache. I set MaxReqsPerClient to a really low value just so the threads don't hold a lot of memory, but has anyone seen calls like this? Am I wrong in thinking that it's probably Drupal pulling too much data back from the cache in DB? read(52, "h_index\";a:2:{s:6:\"weight\";i:1;s"..., 6171) = 1368 read(52, "\";a:2:{s:6:\"author\";a:3:{s:5:\"la"..., 4803) = 1368 read(52, ":\"description\";s:19:\"Term name t"..., 3435) = 1368 read(52, "abel\";s:4:\"Name\";s:11:\"descripti"..., 2067) = 1368 read(52, "ions\";a:2:{s:4:\"form\";a:3:{s:4:\""..., 16384) = 708 brk(0x2ab554396000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f653000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f753000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f853000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55f953000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55fa53000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55fb53000 brk(0x2ab554356000) = 0x2ab5542f5000 mmap(NULL, 1048576, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2ab55fc53000 poll([{fd=52, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}], 1, 0) = 0 (Timeout) write(52, "d\0\0\0\3SELECT cid, data, created, "..., 104) = 104 read(52, "\1\0\0\1\5E\0\0\2\3def\23drupal_database_nam"..., 16384) = 1368 read(52, ";s:11:\"granularity\";a:5:{s:4:\"ye"..., 34783) = 1368 read(52, ":4:\"date\";}s:9:\"datestamp\";a:9:{"..., 33415) = 1368 read(52, "\";i:0;s:15:\"display_default\";i:0"..., 32047) = 1368 read(52, "e as an integer value.\";s:8:\"set"..., 30679) = 1368 read(52, "label' pairs, i.e. 'Fraction': 0"..., 29311) = 1368 top (the procs just keep growing in memory..): 12845 apache 15 0 581m 246m 37m S 0.0 4.1 0:17.39 httpd 12846 apache 15 0 571m 235m 37m S 0.0 4.0 0:12.13 httpd 12833 apache 15 0 420m 117m 37m S 0.0 2.0 0:06.04 httpd 12851 apache 15 0 412m 113m 37m S 0.0 1.9 0:05.32 httpd 13871 apache 15 0 409m 109m 37m S 0.0 1.8 0:04.90 httpd 12844 apache 15 0 407m 108m 37m S 0.0 1.8 0:04.50 httpd 13870 apache 15 0 407m 108m 37m S 0.3 1.8 0:03.50 httpd 14903 apache 15 0 402m 103m 37m S 0.3 1.7 0:01.29 httpd 14850 apache 15 0 397m 100m 37m S 0.0 1.7 0:02.08 httpd 14907 apache 15 0 390m 93m 36m S 0.0 1.6 0:01.32 httpd 13872 apache 15 0 386m 91m 37m S 0.0 1.5 0:03.13 httpd 12843 apache 15 0 373m 81m 37m S 0.0 1.4 0:02.51 httpd 14901 apache 15 0 370m 75m 33m S 0.0 1.3 0:00.78 httpd 14904 apache 15 0 335m 29m 15m S 0.0 0.5 0:00.26 httpd

  • Shell command slow when using pipe, fast with intermediate file

    - by plang
Does anyone understand this huge difference in processing time, when using an intermediate file, or when using a pipe? I'm converting tiff to pdf using standard tools on a fresh debian squeeze server. A standard way of doing this is to convert to ps first. Without pipe: root@web5:~# time tiff2ps test.tif > test.ps real 0m0.860s user 0m0.744s sys 0m0.112s root@web5:~# time ps2pdf13 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 test.ps > test.pdf real 0m0.667s user 0m0.612s sys 0m0.060s With pipe: root@web5:~# time tiff2ps test.tif | ps2pdf13 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 - > test.pdf real 1m6.098s user 0m15.861s sys 0m50.9 During the last command, gs process is at 100% all the time. Update: Here is an strace output for the ps generation: root@web5:~# strace tiff2ps test.tif > test.ps execve("/usr/bin/tiff2ps", ["tiff2ps", "test.tif"], [/* 28 vars */]) = 0 brk(0) = 0x1395000 • SQL SERVER – Windows File/Folder and Share Permissions – Notes from the Field #029

    - by Pinal Dave
[Note from Pinal]: This is a 29th episode of Notes from the Field series. Security is the task which we should give it to the experts. If there is a small overlook or misstep, there are good chances that security of the organization is compromised. This is very true, but there are always devils’s advocates who believe everyone should know the security. As a DBA and Administrator, I often see people not taking interest in the Windows Security hiding behind the reason of not expert of Windows Server. We all often miss the important mission statement for the success of any organization – Teamwork. In this blog post Brian tells the story in very interesting lucid language. Read On! In this episode of the Notes from the Field series database expert Brian Kelley explains a very crucial issue DBAs and Developer faces on their production server. Linchpin People are database coaches and wellness experts for a data driven world. Read the experience of Brian in his own words. When I talk security among database professionals, I find that most have at least a working knowledge of how to apply security within a database. When I talk with DBAs in particular, I find that most have at least a working knowledge of security at the server level if we’re speaking of SQL Server. One area I see continually that is weak is in the area of Windows file/folder (NTFS) and share permissions. The typical response is, “I’m a database developer and the Windows system administrator is responsible for that.” That may very well be true – the system administrator may have the primary responsibility and accountability for file/folder and share security for the server. However, if you’re involved in the typical activities surrounding databases and moving data around, you should know these permissions, too. Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up where someone is able to get to data he or she shouldn’t, or you could be opening the door where human error puts bad data in your production system. File/Folder Permission Basics: I wrote about file/folder permissions a few years ago to give the basic permissions that are most often seen. Here’s what you must know as a minimum at the file/folder level: Read - Allows you to read the contents of the file or folder. Having read permissions allows you to copy the file or folder. Write  – Again, as the name implies, it allows you to write to the file or folder. This doesn’t include the ability to delete, however, nothing stops a person with this access from writing an empty file. Delete - Allows the file/folder to be deleted. If you overwrite files, you may need this permission. Modify - Allows read, write, and delete. Full Control - Same as modify + the ability to assign permissions. File/Folder permissions aggregate, unless there is a DENY (where it trumps, just like within SQL Server), meaning if a person is in one group that gives Read and antoher group that gives Write, that person has both Read and Write permissions. As you might expect me to say, always apply the Principle of Least Privilege. This likely means that any additional permission you might add does not need Full Control. Share Permission Basics: At the share level, here are the permissions. Read - Allows you to read the contents on the share. Change - Allows you to read, write, and delete contents on the share. Full control - Change + the ability to modify permissions. Like with file/folder permissions, these permissions aggregate, and DENY trumps. So What Access Does a Person / Process Have? Figuring out what someone or some process has depends on how the location is being accessed: Access comes through the share (\\ServerName\Share) – a combination of permissions is considered. Access is through a drive letter (C:\, E:\, S:\, etc.) – only the file/folder permissions are considered. The only complicated one here is access through the share. Here’s what Windows does: Figures out what the aggregated permissions are at the file/folder level. Figures out what the aggregated permissions are at the share level. Takes the most restrictive of the two sets of permissions. You can test this by granting Full Control over a folder (this is likely already in place for the Users local group) and then setting up a share. Give only Read access through the share, and that includes to Administrators (if you’re creating a share, likely you have membership in the Administrators group). Try to read a file through the share. Now try to modify it. The most restrictive permission is the Share level permissions. It’s set to only allow Read. Therefore, if you come through the share, it’s the most restrictive. Does This Knowledge Really Help Me? In my experience, it does. I’ve seen cases where sensitive files were accessible by every authenticated user through a share. Auditors, as you might expect, have a real problem with that. I’ve also seen cases where files to be imported as part of the nightly processing were overwritten by files intended from development. And I’ve seen cases where a process can’t get to the files it needs for a process because someone changed the permissions. If you know file/folder and share permissions, you can spot and correct these types of security flaws. Given that there are a lot of database professionals that don’t understand these permissions, if you know it, you set yourself apart. And if you’re able to help on critical processes, you begin to set yourself up as a linchpin (link to .pdf) for your organization. If you want to get started with performance tuning and database security with the help of experts, read more over at Fix Your SQL Server. • C# how to get current encoding type used by C# to write/read configuration for config file?

    - by 5YrsLaterDBA
I am doing connection string encryption. we use our own encryption key with AES algorithm to do this. during the process, we need to convert string to byte array and then convert byte array back to string. I found the encoding play an important role on those conversions. So I need to know the encoding C# is using to get above conversion right. Any idea how to get current encoding programmably? thanks,

  • how to read user input from custom dialog in android?

    - by urobo
I'd like to use a custom dialog built over an AlterDialog to obtain login info from the user. In this manner I first use the layoutinflater to get the layout and then put it in the AlertDialog.Builder.setView() method. LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater) Home.this.getSystemService(LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); layoutLogin = inflater.inflate(R.layout.login,(ViewGroup) findViewById(R.id.rl)); My layout consists of two textview and two editext for username and password respectively. Then I override the onCreateDialog method, checking the dialog id and putting all together, during the building phase I use the setButton(...) method to add a confirmation Button, neutral though: /* (non-Javadoc) * @see android.app.Activity#onCreateDialog(int) */ @Override protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) { AlertDialog d = null; AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(this); switch(id){ ... case Home.DIALOG_LOGIN: builder.setView(layoutLogin); builder.setMessage("Sign in to your DyCaPo Account").setCancelable(false); d=builder.create(); d.setTitle("Login"); Message msg = new Message(); msg.setTarget(Home.this.handleLogin); d.setButton(Dialog.BUTTON_NEUTRAL,"Sign in",msg); break; ... } return d; } Then I setup the Handler handleLogin: private Handler handleLogin= new Handler(){ /* (non-Javadoc) * @see android.os.Handler#handleMessage(android.os.Message) */ @Override public void handleMessage(Message msg) { String input = usernameInput.getText().toString(); //this should hold the EditText field for the username } }; which is just a stub up to now. what I don't get is when and where I have to access the two fields since I tried to save a reference to them but unfortunately I always get a null pointer exception. Can anyone tell me what I do wrong and give some guidelines to work with custom dialogs. Thanks in advance! :)

  • IOException reading a large file from a UNC path into a byte array using .NET

    - by Matt
I am using the following code to attempt to read a large file (280Mb) into a byte array from a UNC path public void ReadWholeArray(string fileName, byte[] data) { int offset = 0; int remaining = data.Length; log.Debug("ReadWholeArray"); FileStream stream = new FileStream(fileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); while (remaining > 0) { int read = stream.Read(data, offset, remaining); if (read <= 0) throw new EndOfStreamException (String.Format("End of stream reached with {0} bytes left to read", remaining)); remaining -= read; offset += read; } } This is blowing up with the following error. System.IO.IOException: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested If I run this using a local path it works fine, in my test case the UNC path is actually pointing to the local box. Any thoughts what is going on here ?

  • How do you read a segfault kernel log message.

    - by Sullenx
This can be a very simple question, I'm am attempting to debug an application which generates the following segfault error in the kern.log /var/log/kern.log.0:Jan 8 13:25:56 myhost kernel: myapp[15514]: segfault at 794ef0 ip 080513b sp 794ef0 error 6 in myapp[8048000+24000] Here are my questions: 1) Is there any documentation as to what are the diff error numbers on segfault, in this instance it is error 6, but i've seen error 4, 5 2) What is the meaning of the information at bf794ef0 ip 0805130b sp bf794ef0 and myapp[8048000+24000]? So far i was able to compile with symbols, and when i do a "x 0x8048000+24000" it returns a symbol, is that the correct way of doing it? My assumptions thus far are the following: sp = stack pointer? ip = instruction pointer at = ???? myapp[8048000+24000] = address of symbol?

  • Windows "known folders": is there any one of them which is reliably read/write for all users on all

    - by Stabledog
SHGetKnownFolderPath() and its cohorts accept one of the constants defined here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378457%28v=VS.85%29.aspx ), returning the path to a directory. I'm looking for one of these folders which is reliably writable by all users (including LocalSystem) on XP, Vista, and Windows 7... but I think I'm striking out. It appears that, in fact, there is no single location on the hard drive anymore where you can put a file and be assured that all users can write to it on all these OS versions, without fiddling the permissions first. Is this true?

  • Custom Buttons in Android: How to get border/edge/frame when I read the background from xml?

    - by Anna
Hi, Using Android Shapes in xml I have defined a gradient which I use as the background for a button. This all works nice, but there's no edge surrounding the button. I would like it to look similar to the normal Android button but I need more flexibility to control the color and look. The shape is defined as follows: I would expect the border to be set in the xml. Why doesn't "stroke" fix it? Stroke doesn't seem to do anything. I checked the Android Developer spec, but couldn't find the answer there: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/drawable-resource.html I have also looked through all the properties of the Android Button, but as expected there's no such parameter, probably since it's built into the normal Android button. Btw, I checked ImageButton properties too. Can someone please help? I know there's the alternative to make an image with proper edges and use an ImageButton, but there really should be a way to fix this programmatically. Thanks! Anna

  • What is your favorite way to read XML files using C#?

    - by stacker
    Let's take this xml structure as example: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Configuration-content> <XFile Name="file name 1" /> <XFile Name="name2" /> <XFile Name="name3" /> <XFile Name="name4" /> </Configuration-content> public class Configuration { public XFile[] Files { get; set; } } public interface IConfigurationRipository { Configuration Get(); void Save(Configuration entity); } I wonder what's the best way to do that. The task is to implement IConfigurationRipository using your favorite approach.

  • How do I read a secure rss feed into a SyndicationFeed without providing credentials?

    - by John Kaster
For whatever reason, IBM uses https (without requiring credentials) for their RSS feeds. I'm trying to consume https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/blogs/roller-ui/rendering/feed/gradybooch/entries/rss?lang=en with a .NET 4 SyndicationFeed. • What's the correct way to read an inputStream into a node property in JCR 2?

    - by Stuart
In JCR 1 you could do: final InputStream in = zip.getInputStream(zip.getEntry(zipEntryName)); node.setProperty(JcrConstants.JCR_CONTENT, in); But that's deprecated in JCR 2 as detailed at http://www.day.com/maven/jsr170/javadocs/jcr-2.0/javax/jcr/Node.html#setProperty%28java.lang.String,%20java.io.InputStream%29 That says I should be using node.setProperty(String, Binary) but I don't see any way to turn my inputStream into a Binary. Can anyone point me to docs or example code for this?

  • How to read special characters from stdin in Python?

    - by erickrf
I'm having trouble reading special characters from stdin. Here are my attempts: import os dir = raw_input("Dir name: ") Dir name: c:/á os.chdir(dir) WindowsError: [Error 2] The system cannot find the file specified: 'c:/\x81\xe1' Ok, so I tried to get the default system encoding and recode the string from stdin: import locale encoding = locale.getdefaultlocale()[1] print encoding cp1252 unicode(dir, encoding) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "c:\Python26\lib\encodings\cp1252.py", line 15, in decode return codecs.charmap_decode(input,errors,decoding_table) UnicodeDecodeError: 'charmap' codec can't decode byte 0x81 in position 3: character maps to <undefined> Now, I don't know how to solve this. Nor can I understand - why is there a problem when I try to access a directory with a name written in the system default encoding itself??

  • [C#] Improving method to read signed 8-bit integers from hexadecimal.

    - by JYelton
Scenario: I have a string of hexadecimal characters which encode 8-bit signed integers. Each two characters represent a byte which employ the leftmost (MSB) bit as the sign (rather than two's complement). I am converting these to signed ints within a loop and wondered if there's a better way to do it. There are too many conversions and I am sure there's a more efficient method that I am missing. Current Code: string strData = "FFC000407F"; // example input data, encodes: -127, -64, 0, 64, 127 int v; for (int x = 0; x < strData.Length/2; x++) { v = HexToInt(strData.Substring(x * 2, 2)); Console.WriteLine(v); // do stuff with v } private int HexToInt(string _hexData) { string strBinary = Convert.ToString(Convert.ToInt32(_hexData, 16), 2).PadLeft(_hexData.Length * 4, '0'); int i = Convert.ToInt32(strBinary.Substring(1, 7), 2); i = (strBinary.Substring(0, 1) == "0" ? i : -i); return i; } Question: Is there a more streamlined and direct approach to reading two hex characters and converting them to an int when they represent a signed int (-127 to 127) using the leftmost bit as the sign?

  • How do I read live camera data on the iPhone (like Microsoft Tag Reader)?

    - by Bill
While the user is still in UIImagePickerController, I'd like to be able to get a UIImage representation of the image in the camera, make some changes to the image, and then display the altered image instead of the image coming directly from the camera. How can I do this? I tried setting a timer and calling takePicture, but calling it seemed to have no effect. The documentation says: Calling this method while an image is being captured has no effect. You must wait until the associated delegate object receives an imagePickerController:didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo: message before you can capture another picture. So how can I do this? I know that it's possible, since apps like Tag Reader are able to detect when something specific rolls in front of the camera. Thanks!
