    Expression Blend is a wonderful design environment for WP7 (Windows Phone 7) but for quickly visualizing a concept nothing beats Illustrator! I am excited about WP7 and decided that having a solid .ai template would prove invaluable. Some of the details of the WP7 UI Design and Interaction Guide are a bit fuzzy (literally) but I was able to generate some useful layout guides, character styles, and symbols. While the template does not cover every aspect of the guide I think it is a good launching point; if you find it useful and extend it please share your updates (I created the template in CS4, if you have problems in earlier versions let me know).Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?     Somewhere I saw a rant against java/javac allegedly using a mix of Windows and Unix style like java -classpath ... -ea ... Something IMHO, it is no mix, it's just like find works as well, isn't it? AFAIK, according to POSIX, the syntax should be like java --classpath ... --ea ... Something and -abcdef would mean specifying 6 short options at once. I wonder which version leads in general to less typing and less errors. I'm writing a small utility in Java and in no case I'm going to use Windows style /a /b since I'm interested primarily in Unix. What style should I choose?

    I do understand that coding convention is a matter of preference, and that different coding conventions have different subtle advantages or shortcomings, and depending on what one wants, one should choose his/her style. But why is usually Java written where the opening brace is on the same line as the function definition of control statement, and in C or C++ the curly braces have a line of their own?     This is the  Ineta Live player without the O’Data Feed.  It is a good example of taking the plain Media Player provided with the Encoder install and re-templating it to make it your own.  It also has a custom scrub control that is added in.  I generally put my tempates in a separate resource file.  On this project, I discovered that I had to include the template at the document level because I needed the ability to attach some code behind to fire change state behaviors.  I could not use the blend xaml behaviors for change state inside the template because the template can’ determine the TargetObject.   Version 1.01 – 6/10/09 (wow how did a week slip by)

  • Can coding style cause or influence memory fragmentation?

    As the title states, I'd like to know if coding style can cause or influence memory fragmentation in a native application, specifically one written using C++. If it does, I'd like to know how. An example of what I mean by coding style is using std::string to represent strings (even static strings) and perform operations on them instead of using the C Library (such as strcmp, strlen, and so on) which can work both on dynamic strings and static strings (the latter point is beneficial since it does not require an additional allocation to access string functions, which is not the case with std::string). A "forward-looking" attitude I have with C++ is to not use the CRT, since to do so would, in a way, be a step backwards. However, such a style results in more dynamic allocations, and especially for a long living application like a server, this causes some speculation that memory fragmentation might become a problem.

  • Why use binary files to stack up different versions on DMSs?

    I've used both Liferay and Alfresco trying to use them as the Document Management System for an intranet. I noticed the following: They use the file system and the database to store files They use a GUID to name the file on the filesystem and that GUID is used as an Id in the database. The GUID-named file is a binary file The GUID-named binary file stores all versions for a given file The path for the file in the DMS doesn't match the one in the file system The URL makes reference to the GUID when a certain file is requested What I want to know is why is this, and what would be the best way of doing it. Like how to would you create the binary file (zip?), and what parts would you keep in the binary file and what parts would you store in the database (meta-data, path?). I'm assuming some of the benefits of doing it like this. As having the same URL for a file, regardless of its current document path. And having only one file even if the file has changed names over time.

    I have the following situation: I'm developing an add-in for a UML modeling tool. The models that can be created by the user are stored inside the main application and a limited access to the models is given through its API. However, the add-in has a lot of callbacks for events that are triggered by the main application, when changes to the model occur by the user. Since the models are already stored once in the main application, I considered it not practicable to duplicate the models in the add-in, which leads to the fact that I have only behavior in the add-in, rather than having a state. This behavior is mainly expressed by static functions, that are organized in functional cohesive classes. The callbacks for the events have always references to the model elements relevant for the specifc event that ocurred. First, it seemed to me that this is a procedural style in general, but procedural style doesn't consider events/callbacks, so this boils down to the question. How is this programming style called?

  • Truncate text to fit table cell without wrapping using css or jquery

    I want the text in one of the columns of a table to not wrap, but to just truncate so that it fits within the current size of the table cell. I don't want the table cell to change size, as I need the table to be exactly 100% the width of the container. This is because the table with 100% width is inside of a positioned div with overflow: auto (it's actually inside of a jquery UI.Layout panel). I tried both overflow: hidden and the text still wrapped. This is at least true for Firefox and Chrome. In IE7 the links can at least be clicked and Opera seems completely fine. Does anyone know the reason for this strange behaviour? Is it a browser bug? Please note: I am not looking for a working two column CSS layout technique, I know there are loads of them. And I don't necessarily need this technique to work. I only like to understand the reason why the second variant behaves like it does.   • Wrong CSS mime type with Roundcube 0.5 beta and nginx

    I'm running into a CSS problem. This is a setup based on Debian Squeeze (nginx/0.7.67, php5/cgi) on which I installed the latest Roundcube 0.5 beta. PHP is properly processed, login works fine but the CSS files are not loaded and Firefox is throwing the following errors: Error: The stylesheet https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/skins/default/common.css?s=1290600165 was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css". Source File: https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/?_task=login Line: 0 Error: The stylesheet https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/skins/default/mail.css?s=1290156319 was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css". Source File: https://webmail.example.net:10443/roundcube/?_task=login Line: 0 As far as I understand, nginx doesn't see the .css extension (because ofthe ?s= argument) and thus set the mime type with the default value, being text/html. Should I fix this in nginx (and how ?) or is it roundcube's related ? Edit: It seems that it's nginx related. The content-type isn't set for any other type than text/html. I had to include manually the following declarations to force CSS and JS content-types. I've been able to fade all the elements with the following jQuery: $('*').css('opacity', .3); However, it seems as if opacity is a property that inherits from parent elements, even if I explicitly set the opacity of the div to 1. I'm drawing a blank as to any solutions right now, so can I have some help here?

    EDIT: Solved - was not flutter's tag stripping, should work as advertised. I'm using Flutter (which creates custom fields) in Wordpress to display profile information entered as a Post. Before I implemented the CSS tables the link showed up and was clickable. Now I get nothing returned, even when I try to call the link outside the table.   • CSS to Replace Table Layout for Forms

    I've looked at other questions and am unable to find the solution to this. Consider this image: I want to wrap divs and stack them vertically. The GREEN div would be a wrapper on a line. The BLUE div would contain an html label and maybe icon for a tooltip. The ORANGE div would contain some sort of entry (input, select, textarea). Several of these would be stacked vertically to make up a form. I am doing this now, but I have to specify a height for the container div and that really needs to change depending on the content - considering any entry could land there. Images and other stuff could land here, as well. I have a width set on the BLUE div and the ORANGE is float:left. How can I get rid of the height on divs and let that be determined by content? Is there a better way? Changing all to something else would be difficult and would prefer a way to style all elements or something.   • Sprite Fallback

    I have a number of images on a page contained within a single sprite image, these images must be contained within the single sprite due to other requirements of the site. Whilst this is working fine in most browsers I have an issue on Opera Mini where it is not rendering the sprite at all and just displaying the whole image. Is there any CSS that can be used to provide a text alternative when the browser is unable to render the sprite?
