  • SYS2 Scripts Updated – Scripts to monitor database backup, database space usage and memory grants now available

    I’ve just released three new scripts of my “sys2” script collection that can be found on CodePlex: Project Page: http://sys2dmvs.codeplex.com/ Source Code Download: http://sys2dmvs.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/view/57732 The three new scripts are the following sys2.database_backup_info.sql sys2.query_memory_grants.sql sys2.stp_get_databases_space_used_info.sql Here’s some more details: database_backup_info This script has been made to quickly check if and when backup was done. It will report the last full, differential and log backup date and time for each database. Along with these information you’ll also get some additional metadata that shows if a database is a read-only database and its recovery model: By default it will check only the last seven days, but you can change this value just specifying how many days back you want to check. To analyze the last seven days, and list only the database with FULL recovery model without a log backup select * from sys2.databases_backup_info(default) where recovery_model = 3 and log_backup = 0 To analyze the last fifteen days, and list only the database with FULL recovery model with a differential backup select * from sys2.databases_backup_info(15) where recovery_model = 3 and diff_backup = 1 I just love this script, I use it every time I need to check that backups are not too old and that t-log backup are correctly scheduled. query_memory_grants This is just a wrapper around sys.dm_exec_query_memory_grants that enriches the default result set with the text of the query for which memory has been granted or is waiting for a memory grant and, optionally, its execution plan stp_get_databases_space_used_info This is a stored procedure that list all the available databases and for each one the overall size, the used space within that size, the maximum size it may reach and the auto grow options. This is another script I use every day in order to be able to monitor, track and forecast database space usage. As usual feedbacks and suggestions are more than welcome!

  • OTN Virtual Developer Day for WebLogic Server and WebLogic Developer Broadcasts

    To further move the new year of 2011 underway for WebLogic Server, quite a series of hands on technical online events and broadcasts are about to get underway from the WebLogic team. The first is Virtual Developer Day: Oracle WebLogic Server which is an online event that combines hands on labs with WebLogic Server through a series of Virtual Box images. This event will cover things like the new Java EE 6 capabilities one can use on WebLogic Server, using Maven and Hudson with WebLogic Server, developing with Web services on WebLogic Server and even upgrading from Oracle Application Server. Very technical, very hands on. And its global - multiple geographies covered.  Nice! James Bayer has put out a full agenda for this on his blog as well as links on how to register. The second is a 5 week long weekly technical broadcast under the umbrella of Accelerate Your Development with Oracle WebLogic Suite walking through topics like working with JPA, designing distributed caching strategies with WebLogic Server, advanced JMS topics and UI topics like JQuery as well restful Web services with Jersey and JAX-RS.  Again in James' blog the full agenda is available to check out if it is interesting for you to attend including a brief video introduction outlining in a bit more detail exactly what will be covered. Hopefully between these two events and the release of WebLogic Server 10.3.4 earlier in January, we are kicking off 2011 in a good fashion.  Looking forward to sharing more as we go forward in 2011.

    I want to have around 60 repositories of projects and I want to serve them from a dedicated remote server(ubuntu) with the help of mercurial server so that all my developers will be able to update their changes. I have followed this article in order to do that but stocked in the Apache Configuration Step (section 2.5 2.5.4). I have some following questions: What are the steps I need to follow to make apache to serve /home/hg/repositories/private/hgweb.cgi when I enter dev.example.com/private ? Is my virtual host file is correct or do I need to change anything ? I bought the example.com and how to make it to serve dev.example.com/private. Do I need to add A name(like : subdomain.example.com and then IP of my server) in the cpannel of hosting company?     I can't manage to access my printer's memory card reader in Nautilus. I can just access it with hp-unload.   • VirtualBox : increase hard disk size of the virtual machine

    I have run out of space on my WinXP virtual machine, which I only gave 10 GB space for when I created it. Is there an easy way to increase it to, say, 20 GB? Further, the partition will need to be resized from WITHIN windows, because you will have this empty space: I was able to resize the partition easily using a bit of freeware called EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.0 Home Edition.

    How do I set up an HTTP Redirect rule to redirect all requests for a virtual directory to another virtual directory, when I don't know the hostname or complete URL, and cannot use the URL Rewrite module? The following redirects should work: http://host1/app/oldvdir -> http://host1/app/newvdir http://host1/app/oldvdir/ -> http://host1/app/newvdir/ http://host1/app/oldvdir/login.aspx -> http://host1/app/newvdir/login.aspx http://host2/app/oldvdir/login.aspx -> http://host2/app/newvdir/login.aspx I would like to place the redirect rule in the app's root web.config. I have attempted the following rules, but the end result is simply that the redirected vdir gets duplicated on the end of the original vdir until reaching the max URL length, e.g., http://host/oldvdir/login.aspx -> http://host/oldvdir/newvdir/newvdir/newvdir/...   • A Virtual Dilemma

    Solving a Gotcha with VirtualBox Guest Additions I was just building a new virtual machine based off an existing image that didn’t have the Virtual Box Guest Additions enabled.  The guest additions allow tight integration between the guest OS and the host environment, providing seemless mouse transfer and the ability to take advantage of full video screen size.  The guest additions need to be linked with the kernel which requires the kernel-devel package to be installed.  After installing this package and then trying to add the guest additions it failed, suggesting that I might not have the kernel-devel package that I had installed.  After a little though I finally realized what had happened.  When I grabbed the kernel-devel package I hadn’t checked the version of my kernel.  The kernel-devel I downloaded didn’t match the revision of the kernel I was running!  Hence my problems.  I upgraded the kernel to the same revision as my kernel-devel package and rebooted.  I had installed dkms so I was pleased to see that my VBox Additions successfully built and the mouse and screen now worked as expected. So now you know my embarrassing story for the day :-)

  • A Virtual Seat at the Architect&rsquo;s Table

    I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull. The three most recent programs were recorded during a virtual mini meet-up of architects back in February.  You’ll find more detail here, but in a nutshell, I invited several previous Arch2Arch panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever was on their minds.  The resulting conversation yielded the three latest programs.   • Setting up a network between a host and guest virtual machine

    (I'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on virtual box) I'm trying to transfer a file (scp) from my laptop to one of the directories of a virtual machine. I tried sharing folders, but that failed. I'm a bit of a networking newbie. I've looked at like 20-30 pages. Here's one: http://www.howtoforge.com/moving-files-between-linux-systems-with-scp I followed those steps exactly. My problem is that when I try using scp, it just hangs. I'm also not sure which network interface to configure (eth0, eth1?) in the guest OS. Another (significant?) detail is that the inet address of eth0 is 10.0.2.15 instead of something like 192.168.x.y. I've enabled the bridge adapter and the host-only adapter. Both the laptop and guest VM have openssh-server installed. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Is there a better place to ask about this?

  • Lighter in CPU/Memory Usage: Lubuntu or Xubuntu

    I am looking for an Ubuntu version that consumes less Memory and CPU. I have read both Lubuntu and Xubuntu (The homepages, wikipedia, phoronix and other sites comparing both). But from experience, which one uses less memory and is less CPU intensive. I need to install them in very old hardware and want to persuade the owner of the hardware of the benefits of Ubuntu. in this case I want to install 11.10 or 12.04 when it comes out. How are each behaving in those versions? The 2 PCs I will be installing either Xubuntu or Lubuntu are: Granpa PC: CPU - Pentium 2 450Mhz RAM - 64MB DIMM Video - 16MB Used for - Documents and Internet. No listening to music, no looking at videos. Just using it for document writing. The other old meat: CPU - Pentium 3 550Mhz RAM - 128MB DIMM Video - 16MB Used for - Documents and Internet also but they want.. or maybe they are wishing for it to use it to see movies and listen to music. This one has internet. The other one does not.

  • Virtual Hosts Not Working (12.10)

    I'm trying to get virtual hosts up and running on my Ubuntu laptop that has 12.10 installed. I'm running Apache2, and I enabled the virtual hosting module. When I go to 12.0.0.1, I'm able to get the default page. When I go to example.local, I just get the search engine results, instead of the "hey, you're seeing this" page I set up in that directory (/var/www/example.local). I even made sure I have only one "NameVirtualHost *:80" variable active.   • Java JNI leak in c++ process.

    Hi all.. I am beginner in Java. My problem is: I am calling a Java class's method from c++. For this i am using JNI. Everythings works correct, but i have some memory LEAKS in the process of c++ program... So.. i did simple example.. 1) I create a java machine (jint res = JNI_CreateJavaVM(&jvm, (void**)&env, &vm_args);) 2) then i take a pointer on java class (jclass cls = env-FindClass("test_jni")); 3) after that i create a java class object object, by calling the constructor (testJavaObject = env-NewObject(cls, testConstruct);) AT THIS very moment in the process of c++ program is allocated 10 MB of memory 4) Next i delete the class , the object, and the Java Machine .. AT THIS very moment the 10 MB of memory are not free .................     I am implementing two processes on a LynxOS SE (POSIX conformant) system that will communicate via shared memory. One process will act as a "producer" and the other a "consumer". In a multi-threaded system my approach to this would be to use a mutex and condvar (condition variable) pair, with the consumer waiting on the condvar (with pthread_cond_wait) and the producer signalling it (with pthread_cond_signal) when the shared memory is updated. How do I achieve this in a multi-process, rather than multi-threaded, architecture? Is there a LynxOS/POSIX way to create a condvar/mutex pair that can be used between processes? Or is some other synchronization mechanism more appropriate in this scenario?

  • How to use less memory while running a task in Symfony 1.4?

    I'm using Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. So far I had no problem running tasks with Symfony. But now that I have to import a pretty big amount of data and save them in the database, I get the infamous "Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of XXXX bytes exhausted" During this import I'm only creating new objects, setting a few fields and saving them. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the number of objects I'm creating when saving data. Unsetting those objects doesn't do anything though. Are there any best practices to limit memory usage in Symfony?

    I was reading through 2010 CWE/SANS Top 25 Most Dangerous Programming Errors and one of the entries is for Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input. It suggests using a language with features to prevent or mitigate this problem, and says: For example, many languages that perform their own memory management, such as Java and Perl, are not subject to buffer overflows. Other languages, such as Ada and C#, typically provide overflow protection, but the protection can be disabled by the programmer. I was not aware that Java and C# differed in any meaningful way with regard to memory management. How is it that Java is not subject to buffer overflows, while C# only protects against overflows? And how is it possible to disable this protection in C#?
