• Multiple domain names with pages linking to one website

  Hello, I work for a company who have been redesigning their company website. I have been asked to register loads of domain names that contain the keywords that they want to use on the original site. Each of these domain names will contain a one page website with a destription of what the company offers and a link saying something along the lines of 'click here for more infmormation' which then takes you to the main site. The idea being the main site will then be recieving a lot of inbound links and hopefully rise in the google rankings, not to mention bring in more customers who have come to the site from all the other domain names who wouldn't have normally got to the website because it wasn't ranked on the first page. Is this a good idea or will Google see this as spam and penalise the main site for having loads of links to it from one page websites hosted on the same nameserver? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

• Does your company name in an article title damage Search Engine relevance

  I've been wondering about this for a while but never come across a solid answer. Many websites include their name in all the title tags of their articles. This is often apparent in word-press blogs etc. eg: Tsunami hits Japan and leaves thousands homeless | My Website Name The issue I have is that Search engines strip the stop words out of this sentence to leave the words in which it compares to the body text. So if I want my article to rank well and be relevant, in this case about the terrible Tsunami that has recently struck Japan what is to STOP the MY WEBSITE NAME section of the title de-valuing the relevance of the article. Am I over-worrying? Or should I take this in to consideration? Thanks for advice in advance.

• Where can I find a good Hibernate Criteria tutorial that doesn't use cats and kittens? [closed]

  I've been using Hibernate a little while (HQL) and want to try Criteria's for a few scenarios we have here. I'm trying to get a few inner joins (2 layers deep) and am struggling a little. I go to the official site and they teach by cats and kittens. I don't care about cats and kittens and find the analogy hard to follow. Orders, details, shipments, etc. Nice, boring business references is what I enjoy. I tried to Google it but all I get are early 2000's websites with so many flashing GIF's, cluttered displays, flash overs and "tummy tuck" ads I want to puke. Why can't the java world have sites like http://guides.rubyonrails.org/? And no, I'm not advocating I volunteer to create a similar site. :-) Anyway, any good site that can give a nice tutorial on Criteria based searches would be appreciated.

• Studying computer science - what am I getting myself into?

  I'm a student considering the possibility of studying computer science. I've picked up programming indie games and websites as a hobby and I really enjoy it. Despite my fairly positive experience, I somehow get the feeling that computer science in the business world will be completely different than do-it-for-fun game making. Since I'm interested in the field and I'd like to study well, I want to prepare myself for the onslaught. (If that’s even possible) What are some of the most important principals I need to know if I decide to study computer science? What will I need to know about computer science that a University probably won't teach me? Is there any way I can get hands on experience before or while I'm at a University? • Is there a way to add Google Docs-like comments to any web page?

  You know the comments on Google Docs word processing documents? And how it creates a little discussion over in the right-hand margin? I love it. Great for collaboration. I want to free it from Google Docs so I can use it with clients to discuss mock-ups or scaffolded websites. Searching Google for "add comments [or discussions] to any website" only gets you results for adding blog-like comments (Disqus, JS-Kit, etc.) Anyone know of a solution for what I'm after here?

  I am trying to start my webhttrack on ubuntu 12.04 precise pangolin but all i get is the opening screen. When i press any button on the page it gives me the following errors: Oops! • How to negate current window in gnome shell?

  I dislike that most websites use a black font on white background for their sites, as it gets too tiresome for me to read. Back in the days of 11.04, using Gnome2 with compiz, there actually was a Negative feature that could negate the content of any window, making the background black and the font white. Much easier on the eyes for me. Yet since 11.10, using gnome shell with mutter, I have no idea if there is something alike out there. Hence my question: How do I negate the currently active window in gnome shell? I am not interested in alternative methods, e.g. user styles. I am aware of their existence but I find it much easier to just invert the screen by the hit of a key shortcut. I also want the solution to be application-agnostic. As I also from time to time would want to invert libre-office or some other glaringly white application.

  Is there any evidence that linking to external quality, reputable and popular websites helps with ranking (directly or indirectly)? Is there an established correlation? Some posts on the web do claim it, but without providing any evidence. It is known that if your website links to bad neighborhood, this will harm your reputation and authority, but does the reverse actually help? And, does it matter if the website is young or old in this case? Update I have found this Moz video revealing there is a 0.04 correlation with ranking.

• Skeletal Animation - Automatically apply skeleton to model

  Looking at websites such as mixamo.com or some game's development systems such as the animation editor for Overgrowth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RpqbC5-Z0E), i see that the skeleton in these situations is automatically being applied to the models. I really don't expect (though wouldn't mind) code that does this, but i really am looking for some sort of pointer in the direction, or how they go about this. If any of you have done this, or know how to, please do reply, i don't want to spend the next week trying to crack it, then another to actually code it :P Thanks all :) Just for a bit more information, i am in C# working with OpenTK with my own custom model loader, etc. but i can easily adjust any given code / concept to fit with mine :)

  I already do a lot of programming in my spare time. I'm confident with PHP, Javascript, jQuery which I use in combination with HTML to create mock-up websites. • Faulty memtest result

  I've been a bit suspicious about my RAM lately. They seem not work like i expect them to. For instance i run a lot of Virtual Test Environments in VMware Workstation and lately Ubuntu starts to lag just running 4 virtual machines each dedicated 512 MB. BTW im having 6GB memory on my laptop. This did not use to be a problem for me on my last laptop that even had a lot lower CPU resources. So i was led to try a memtest after reading some websites about RAM testing. So i did a memtest overnight but when i woke up this morning i was just looping and i could not Exit or do anything. It was just looping the number of errors besides test 7 which you can see in the lower right part of the screenshot. Can anyone interpret this screenshot for me? Do i have a faulty set of RAMs?

  I want to run a website like stock photos. How can I be sure that the uploader is real copyright holder of the picture? Is it possible to leave the responsibility of this copyright claim to the uploader or at last the webmaster is responsible for the website content? It generally confuses me, as for example, stock photo websites needs form signed by the model for photos showing human face. How they can be sure that the signature actually belongs to the model?   I always hear that PHP is for medium and small websites whereas .NET and Java for enterprise applications. My question is about PHP. Why is PHP not a good option for enterprise web applications? Is it because if the web application becomes bigger then PHP will be slower as it is an interpreted language? I know that corporate world will choose .NET or J2EE because of the integration with their products and because of back end services, etc. However, if we just have PHP for building sites and web applications then how can we use it to perform well with big sites?   The competition of one of my company's websites has started a really dirty campaign of acquiring hack links. One of their ingenious tactics has been to seed in links to OUR site withing their hack bot, making US look like we might be responsible for it or using us to cover their tail. These are .gov and .edu sites. Is there any way possible to discredit these links? To disavow them at all? EDIT: Penguin has really effected this question, IMO. • How do you unit test your javascript.

  I spend a lot of time working in javascript of late. I have not found a way that seems to work well for testing javascript. This in the past hasn't been a problem for me since most of the websites I worked on had very little javascript in them. I now have a new website that makes extensive use of jQuery I would like to build unit tests for most of the system. My problems are this. Most of the functions make changes to the DOM in some way. Most of the functions request data from the web server as well and require a session on the service to get results back. I would like to run the test from either a command line or a test running harness rather then in a browser. Any help or articles I should be reading would be helpful.

  I am new to web development and trying to study various types of websites as case study. Right now my focus is on how search engines works for an eCommerce website. I know basic functioning for a search engine, i.e. crawl web pages, index them and the display the results using those indexes. But I got little confuse in case of an eCommerce website. Don't you think that it would be better if a search engine instead of crawling the web pages containing products, it should directly crawl the database and index the products stored in the database? And when a user search for any product, it will simply give us the rows of the table which matches the user query? If this is not the case, can someone please explain how the usual method works on eCommerce website?

• 2D Game Dev Resources/Tutorials for Windows (Phone) 8 Development?

  I am really exited about the launch of windows 8, windows phone 8 so I decided to start learning how to develop games for them. I was even more exited when I found out that html, css, javascript can be used to develop apps for these platforms. I'm familiar with some standard html, css3 that i used to develop some websites, but I only know some VERY basics of javascript. I know things like HTML5 canvas and image sprites can be used to develop games, but I haven't found any tutorials that I understood good enough ;/ So I am asking you now. Can you suggest any good tutorials/resources (preferably video) that start from beginners level and go to advanced into game development with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. It would be really good if such tutorials concentrated on game development for mobile phones (e.g. detecting when user touches the screen, using optimised images for hi res and standard displays, adopting to screen size etc) Oh.. and I forgot to mention that I am only interested in 2d game development.
