• How can I monitor network traffic?

  I have a home network with about 10 devices including BluRay player [netflix] and both windows and linux machines. I need to collect network traffic statistics so that if questions come up about how much traffic I'm using I have the answer independent of my ISP. I've looked at DD-WRT, but I see that even buying a new router that will be supported is a problem since I might get the wrong version of the hardware. I have a DIR-655 and a DIR-501 - neither of which is supported. I don't mind buying new hardware, but it looks like a crap-shoot to get one that will work. DD-WRT looks like a bad solution unless someone knows of a place to get a router that is guaranteed to work. Does someone know of an arduino or other SBC solution? I have plenty of NAT routers already, so I just need traffic statistics for external traffic. The network is GBit Ethernet inside and Cable / soon to be DSL outside. The DIR-655 only gives me "packets", not bytes transferred oddly enough. Thanks, ww

  I have the ASUS RT-AC66U and I want to add a USB storage to it. It has 2x USB, and Im already using one for my printer. So the last one I want to use to attach a USB storage, and I've read some reviews stating the throughput of the USB could be up to 18 mb/s. So in regard of USB storage, should I care about hard disk cache? Simple powered-over-usb seems to have 8 mb cache, other (externally powered) has 16 for instance.

• DD-WRT - Where's the best place to get a LinkSys WRT54G V1.0?

  Looking for the initial release of the LinkSys WRT54G, not V1.1 or V2.0 or anything like that. If it comes with DD-WRT pre-installed, even better. That being said, I suppose a side question would be whether SU recommends different hardware. After all, DD-WRT may have been originally built for the WRT54G and the WRT54Gv1.0 may have better hardware than any of the successive models, but it's still fairly dated. Are there newer routers that are more stable or performant with DD-WRT?

  Due to some home network complications I have had to move my router to a seperate part of the house, therefore the wired network I had set up can no longer work. Before I find the time to go out and buy a Wifi adapter for my desktop PC, I have a laptop that uses a built in Wifi card to connect to my router and this can connect to the internet, and I was wondering if I could somehow access the internet on my desktop PC via my laptop. I'm hoping for a not-so-complex solution as this will only be set up for a few days, but it is quite vital that my desktop computer gets internet access. Does anyone have experience in this sort of thing and can help me out? Thanks.

• What happens when router has been set to incorrect time?

  I have a D-Link router for my home Wi-Fi network. Everyday at least once the internet suddenly goes down. I am simply not able to connect to the Wi-Fi network. If I just restart the router, it starts working. To debug the issue I logged into the admin panel and noticed the time was set to something in 2002. I have set it to the correct time. Will wait to see if that fixes the problem. In the meanwhile I want to know what can go bad when the router has been set to show an incorrect time? What are the kinds of problems expected? My Wi-Fi was working just fine most of the time, but sometimes it lost the connection. Could this be linked to the incorrect time setting?

• Extremely poor WiFi reception on new desktop

  I just received a new desktop with a built-in WiFi card (Windows 7 Home Premium x64). However, I am only able to receive any WiFi signal when the computer is within 1-2 meters of a router. Even then, the signal is very weak (Windows 7 says it is "poor"). I have tried this with 2 different routers and see similar results. I have somewhere around a dozen other devices that can connect to both routers with greater signal strength (usually full strength) from much, much further away. When I tried calling support I was instructed to reinstall my drivers and attempt to change the WiFi channel of the router. Neither worked. I was then told that the problem was with my routers and that the computer was functioning normally and that it was certainly not a hardware problem. What would be the cause of this and is there anything I can do to fix it?

• Switched to new router and now experiencing lag?

  I switched from a dynex-802.11b/g to a Netgear-802.11b/g/n just yesterday. My router is down stairs because my phoneline upstairs is retarded....but my PS3 is still upstairs (SOCOM: Confrontation is game I am experiencing issues). I have done everything I can to make sure the connection is solid and have checked the status and it has been as high as 80% and usually lingers at about 60%. I thought about upgrading my bandwidth from 1.5mbs to 7mbs, but I am guessing something is wrong if it worked fine before? Now the game seems more laggy and my voice chat is choppy. Others seem to receive my voice data fine because I can hear my own feedback clearly from other players (if you are in close proximity to another player and speak and there volume is loud enough sometimes you can hear yourself). I wonder if I port forward or setup DMZ then it will be fixed, but I am not sure and don't know quite how to do it. Has anyone else ever experienced this when switching routers? What did you do to fix it? Thanks!

  I know it is possible to create a sofware AP in windows 7 using command prompt: netsh wlan set hostednetwork ... But is it possible to set such a network not to broadcast its SSID? I realize that this does not gain any security - or may even make the system more secure, but I am not asking about security here. I want to know if it is possible, through the netsh command interface, to hide the SSID. If my client wants to hide the SSID, then I will make them aware of security implications, but in the end it is their decision.

• What can I do to configure my SSH such that it pauses for a flaky connection?

  I run ssh from OSX to a Ubuntu box - under home WIFI, everything works perfectly. However, when I ssh from certain external networks, ssh may be working fine for a minute or two and then drop due to a flaky network (diagnosed by pinging 8.8.8.8). How can I set up ssh so that it simply waits/pauses rather than drop (when dropping, I have to setup my development environment from scratch - a big hassle). EDIT When I say a bad connection, I mean, for example, ping 8.8.8.8 will work fine for a while, and then fail for 40-50 pings, and then come back on again.

• iPhone 3G can't see any WiFi networks, ever

  I've got WiFi turned on in the settings, and ask before connect turned off. My iPhone 3G should see several WiFi networks, but it lists none. It also does not list my own network, which my computers see just fine. It has worked earlier but stopped working recently (possibly because of or at the same time of other trouble (which a restore solved)). The iPhone is not jailbroken. The SSID is not hidden, uses WPA2. It also finds no WiFi networks when I'm at a friend's house. His iPhone 2G sees several WiFi networks, including his own. When I use the manual entry method, specifying my home SSID and the proper WPA2 passkey, then click join, the iPhone says couldn't find that network. Same at my friend's place, with his SSID and passkey. I've just backed up my iPhone, then restored it, to see if refreshing the firmware would help. It didn't change anything. Is my iPhone broken? How can I fix this?

  I'm using an Internet Provider that requires a username and password to log in; the prompt shows up as soon as you open a web browser. Because of this, I can only have one device online at a time. How can I get my Time Capsule to essentially log in as the user and allow other devices to connect through it. My Time Capsule has worked with other ISPs that don't require the user log in, but I recently moved. I may be wrong about how the ISP is allowing access, I wasn't sure how to describe the problem.   Hi I have a multiservices sagem router which supports wifi as well, the pack came up with a default wifi configuration key and a WEP Key in the label of the package like this: WIFI Configuration key: abcd1234 WEP Key: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now, when i execute the wifi usb wizard in the official cd, it asks me for the WIFI key, i put the abcd1234 & it says it's incorrect, i try the long WEP key and it says that the key should only have 8 characters. When i go to the control panel of the router in the wifi config, i see that: Open Authentification System WEP 128 Bit Passphrase: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now since the wizard only accepts 8 characters, i try to change the 128bit to 64bit and put some 8 characters and it ends up saying that the new key should be 5 or 13, or 10-26 hex numbers.   i live in a university campus and i can get wifi signal on the outside of my window but not in the house. The solution i use at the moment is a usb wifi dongle outside connected to my laptop but the lack of an internal antenna make the connection quite unreliable at times. So i was trying to find another solution to improve the reception of my network. One idea is to setup a router on the outside (in a place with stronger signal) and redirect the connection inside the house with an ethernet cable but the problem is that our Uni Wifi is managed by a capitve portal (BlueSocket with DNS redirection to login page) and the authentication has to happen on the mac address that connect to the net (so the client appliance in this case). If I use a router with Mac-Clone capability i will be able to be redirected trough the captive portal on my laptop computer and login from there or i need to setup my router to fill in the login page by itself? There are other hardware/software solutions i can use to get what i want?

  My file server is running Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm sharing files from it over samba. It is connected via gigabit ethernet. My desktop, running Windows 8.1, is also connected via gigabit ethernet. I can transfer files between the two and completely saturate that gigabit pipe. However, I just got a Surface Pro 2, and I'm trying to stream HD movies from my server to the device over WiFi. For some reason, I can't break much past 1.5MB/s transferring files over the network. I've tried streaming through XBMC and a standard file copy; no difference. To add the confusion, if I connect to my guest network and then use my VPN server (installed on the router) to access the file server, I get around 3.2MB/s. I've been running diagnostics to determine the root and I think I've found it but I have no idea what is causing it or how to fix it.   We are sharing an internet broadband connection with 6 users at a place we live. We get 20 gb fup ( Fair usage policy) with 2 mbps speed from the ISP after the 20 gb is consumed the speed comes down to 512 kbps very difficult to browse any page. The problem is we cannot track which user/mate is downloading and ending the FUP. it is very difficult to track so is there something that we can allot per user some amount of space like 2 gb of downloading or restrict all from downloading so that we can utilize all the fup till the end of the month. We are using this connection as wifi configured. A adsl router is configured as wifi and we all using all 6 laptops. No PC. Any help would be appreciated.
