  • How can I create a content widget generator?

    Sites like Buzzfeed offer widgets (Javascript, PHP, WordPress, etc.) for syndicating their content on other sites. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could go about creating/implementing some kind of interactive widget generator that gives users options for customizing their widget?     I recently came across a couple of lets say "young people" who were convinced that they were "Web Developers", despite the fact that they were only able to configure a wordpress template, and not even able to edit images properly. So this got me thinking, "back in the day" kids who thought they were hackers but just ran other peoples scripts they had found, were known as Script Kiddies. Do we have a term for these yet?

  • Can I use Google AdSense within a banner rotator?

    I have 3 rotating banners on one 728x90 position on my website, so every time a page is loaded another banner is shown. One of these is AdSense. Is it legal, I mean is this strictly prohibited or not? Because, the code is basically stored in db table in my CMS module in Wordpress, so I guess it is OK. But I am asking to be sure. What is your personal experience? Does Google penalize sites with banner rotators?

  • How to adjust the appearance of the Unity in 12.10?

    Now I updated to 12.10 and would like to adjust the desktop, well unity, appearance. I know there is the theme setting, but I cannot adjust the symbol theme or windows decoration with the systemsettings. I used to use the tool "unsettings" but it doesn't work with 12.10 anymore. Ubuntu Tweak used to be an option but at this point many features are broken and a lot of settings seem to mess up my system or they don't change anything at all (I understand that there has been a design settings change - gsettings, dconf, something ...) myunity has some options to change stuff but I couldn't find it for 12.10 ... not to forget "gnome-tweak-tool" which seems to work for most settings but not for all, e.g. it doesn't change the mouse cursor and the windows decorations do not show some decorations I'd like to use and I am also afraid of messing things up because it is supposed to be used in gnomeshell ... actually as I found out right now it really messes things up: fonts get inverted, suddenly high contrast accessibility setings are used in some windows, nautilus has white fonts on white background and even the login manager is a mess now ... So: How can I adjust the theme, symbol, decorations, fonts for the normal user and for the desktop and for the applications including the applications started as sudo user? I should mention that I upgraded from 12.04 and that some applications like synaptic completely ignore any settings ... sadly it is a mess, there was a time when gnome theming was really well done and very adjustable, I wonder what happened ... Just now I read that further development of Ubuntu Tweak has been stopped. The developer announced that he won't go any further with the software and the online services ... That is sad and destroys my hope for easy appearance editing just by waiting ... has been such a nice tool for 12.04 ... r.i.p.

  • How to troubleshoot web server lock-up (Debian Squeeze)

    Every once in a while, my web server slows so significantly, it seems locked up. Can't SSH in, no sites being served. It's a VPS that started out as Debian 5 which I upgraded to testing (squeeze). It's a typical LAMP set-up with the sole purpose of running a couple of wordpress sites. One time when it locked up, I got to one of the sites, but it was wordpress complaining it couldn't establish a database connection. So it seemed as if something was really chewing up the CPU and mysqld either timed out, or possibly failed and couldn't restart. But since I couldn't SSH in I feel more inclined to attribute it to CPU. But the only processes running now, aside from OS and kernel stuff: apache mysqld python (for fail2ban) sshd exim4 It has 512M of RAM and 1.5 GB of swap. Every time I check on it, it has plenty of free memory and is using virtually no swap (usually 2-3M). And since I am running fail2ban I don't think I'm getting ddosed. I did find this in my logwatch email this morning (it locked up late last night, when there would have been very little traffic): 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a0ebc>] ? oom_kill_process+0x7e/0x23d 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1505>] ? __out_of_memory+0x12a/0x141 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1586>] ? out_of_memory+0x6a/0x94 I didn't find anything else suspicious. It can't be my provider's host because I can SSH in and restart the VM, and everything seems fine. Anybody know which logs I should start poring through to find the core of my problem? Thanks guys.

  • Swap space maxing out - JVM dying

    I have a server running 3 WordPress instances, MySql, Apache and the play framework 2.0 on 64m initial & max heap. If I increase the max heap of the JVM that play is running in even by 16m I see the 128m of swap space steadily fill up until the the JVM dies. I notice that it is only when I am plugging away at the wordpress sites that the JVM will die. I assume this is because the JVM is not asking for memory at the time so gets collected. I notice that when I restart Apache I reclaim about half of my swap and RAM. So is there some way I can configure apache to consume less memory? Also what could be causing the swap space to get so heavily thrashed with just 16m added to the max heap size of the JVM?   • Apache web logs "GET http/1.1" 200 error?

    I've got some puzzling (at least to me) errors that show up in my webserver logs. What's puzzling is that they show my error page being referenced, but that error page doesn't show up as being displayed in hits on statcounter.com. Can someone tell me the difference in these two kinds of errors? Or is only one a "real" error? This is in WordPress, and I have my 404.php file in my theme redirecting to a static Wordpress page at mydomain.com/error/ These first two log entries show /error/, but a "hit" on my /error/ page doesn't show in my webstats.   • Is .htaccess slowing down my dedicated server?

    First of all, I consider myself more a programmer than a servers guy. I have a website where I receive about 3,000 visits per day, which I think is a lot less than the max capacity for a dedicated server. However, I've noticed that the connection to the website is pretty slow, e.g., to load images, to connect to it via SSH, etc. I configured .httaccess recently to avoid hotlinking to images in my server (i.e. .jpg, .gif and .png), and I was wondering if that could be slowing down my website.   • Ubuntu server crashes; need help figuring how to figure out why

    I have a 768 Slice at slicehost.com running Ubuntu Server 8.04.2 LTS (hardy) with a LAMP stack on it that periodically crashes, though why I am not sure. From what I can tell, there is a process that basically goes rogue and consumes all the memory on the slice, suffocating all the other programs running until the whole thing comes to a grinding halt, and I have to do a hard reboot of the slice to get it back up and running again. I can't detect any pattern for this (it seems to happen about once a month, more or less). Here's a screenshot of my console during the last crash: I would assume that a possible cause might a PHP script or an apache configuration rule that might cause the crash if triggered? How would I be able to find out which one is the offending one? I've checked and rechecked all my PHP scripts, and running them doesn't seem to trigger the crash. I've also been able to log on to my system during a crash and see what's running (with top), but I can't tell how the offending process was started, so I can't trace the root of the problem! I know my description is overly generic, but unfortunately my expertise in tracking down the source of these glitches is very limited. If you need any additional information about my system in order to help me figure this out, please let me know in the comments, and I will append it to the question. My only other lead as to the culprit here is Wordpress, which we have installed on this server.     How can I allow access to the foo.html files in the .com/song/private/ subfolder for: a logged-in Wordpress user; or any referral domains (including subfolders) I add; or any URL on our own domain from the com/song/private folder; For all others, the user should be redirected to the corresponding public version of the Post, which is the same html filename and structured .com/song/foo.html. (The private versions uses a different template with different custom fields for each Post.)   • Platform to allow users to suggest and vote for ideas

    I head up a support team for a software product. I am in the process of setting up a blog (Wordpress.org), a forum (PHPBB or maybe Vanilla), a means to view bugs (probably expose Jira), but would also like to allow our customers to suggest enhancement requests. Currently we have this as a 'contact form' via the blog, which feeds into a dedicated inbox, which the product manager reviews and may include some of these ideas into the product. However, I would like to give the clients more power/visibility over this. Have a look at ideas.arcgis.com. There are plenty of other similar sites as well. Users can suggest new ideas Other users can vote these ideas up or down (similar to Stack Exchange sites) Ideas that are voted highly will be given a higher priority over lower ones. We can report back on the # of ideas we implement, and potentially reject ideas with reasoning. Has anyone seen any platforms (ideally free) which would replicate something similar to this? I was half thinking of embedding Vanilla within a wordpress page, but need to look into it more.

    I have a Debian Wheezy server with several websites with separate domains. Some of these websites uses Wordpress and in turn uses PHP's mail function to send mail. I installed "sendmail" to be able for the server to send mail from PHP. We use Google Apps for our customers, so no need to setup a regular mail server. Now the server is blacklisted at www.spamhaus.org and get this message: This IP address is HELO'ing as "localhost.localdomain" which violates the relevant standards (specifically: RFC5321). I have tried to follow the instructions on these websites with no luck: http://www.cardiothink.com/downloads/README.spamhaus-and-blocked-email.html http://centosbeginer.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/how-to-remove-ip-in-cbl-spamhaus/ Can you please help me figure out how to configure the server?   • How much Ram should I need on my VPS package? Am I being ripped off?

    Hello! So, I'm currently on a VPSVille Cpanel3 account that has 768 MB guaranteed ram and 2048 MB burst ram (full details here: http://www.vpsville.ca/cpanel-vps). It's running CentOS, Cpanel, Apache and FastCGI. On the server itself I have a joomla community site with a forum system that generally has about 20 people on it max at any point and even then, during the evening, no one. It's a pretty small site but has a number of modules running on it. It gets about 6000 visits a month. Also on the server is a wordpress site that gets about 80-150 visits a day, 2 other wordpress sites that aren't developed yet so they don't get any traffic at all and 2 static html websites that also only get about 500 hits a month. All in all, no huge sites. The issue is that I get "out of memory" errors fairly frequently and it kills my server and I need to reboot it in order to get all my sites up and running again. It seems to me that I shouldn't have these issues with that much ram allotted to my account and everytime I send in a support ticket, they just tell me to upgrade the ram. Now, I'm still pretty new to all this so I'm not a good judge of how much I really need for my sites to run. I don't know if my sites really do need this much OR vpsville has oversold there servers, they don't actually have those resources available and I'm getting ripped off. So, how much ram should I be using with my current setup? Thanks!

  • Changing the action of a form with javascript/jquery

    I'm having an issue that is driving me crazy. I'm trying to modify the openid-selector to support facebook. I'm using RPXNow as my provider so it requires the form to be submitted to a different url than the standard. For example. RpxNow requires me to setup my form like this: <form action="https://wikipediamaze.rpxnow.com/openid/start?token_url=..."> This works for every provider except for facebook and myspace. Those require the form to be posted to a different url like this: <form action="https://wikipediamaze.rpxnow.com/facebook/start?token_url=..."> and <form action="https://wikipediamaze.rpxnow.com/myspace/start?token_url=..."> The open id selector has a bunch of buttons on the form each representing the openid providers. What I'm trying to do is detect when the facebook or myspace button is clicked and changed the action on the form before submitting. However it's not working. Here is my code. I've tried several variations all with the same "not supported" exception $("#openid_form").attr("action", form_url) document.forms[0].action = form_url Any suggestions? Update Here are more details on the code. I've ommitted some for brevity. The only thing i've done is added the facebook section to the "providers_large" object (which successfully adds the logo to the website), and instead of supply a url identifying the user, I'm creating a property called "form_url" which is what I want to set the action of my form to. If you look at the section title "Provider image click" you'll see where I'm checking for the presence of the property "form_url" and using jquery to change the action and submit the form.   • Permission forbidden on localhost with apache2

    Here is what I am trying to do. I tried to add another folder to apache and I get the following error when trying to acces testing/index.html. The idea is that I would like to have for every customer a folder like /home/neagoe/Work/InterWebs/Projects/[PROJECT NAME]/CustomerProjects/website/dist. Forbidden You don't have permission to access /index.html on this server.
