• Trouble tunneling my local Wordpress install to the mysql database on appfog

  I've set up a wordpress install on appfog (using rackspace), and cloned the install to my local machine for development. I know the install works (using MAMP) because I created a local mysql database and changed wp-config.php to point to it. However, I want to develop without having to change wp-config.php every time I commit. After doing some research, it seems like the Appfog service Caldecott lets me tunnel into the mysql database on the server, using af tunnel. Unfortunately, I'm having issues with getting it working. Even if I change my MAMP mysql port to something like 8889, and tunnel mysql through port 3306, it looks like it's connected but I still get "Error establishing a database connection" when loading my localhost Wordpress. When I quit the mysql monitor (using ctrl+x, ctrl+c), I get a message stating "Error: 'mysql' execution failed; is it in your $PATH?'. Originally, no, it wasn't, but I've fixed my PATH variable on my local machine so that when I go to Terminal and just type mysql, it loads up. So I guess my question is 2 parts: 1.)Am I going with the right approach for Wordpress development on my local machine and 2.)If so, why is the tunnel not working?

• What database options do I have for the Blackberry?

  I notice most of the discussions about Blackberry database options are old, and generally not too informative. As of today, March 31st, 2010, what is the best, most universally supported, free database option available for Blackberry developers? I heard SQLite is available for JDE v5, but last I checked, that was still in beta, and I didn't want to commit to developing on a system that is not supported by most of the phones in service. Thing is, I don't see any dates on these claims. For all I know, the announcements I am reading are from 2008. So, I am still on v 4.7. I need to use a relational DB for the app I am developing, but there aren't many resources for DB handling available - or at least resources that are useful to me. I find a lot of "tutorials" that assume you know everything there is to know about Blackberry development, or Java. But no complete classes or anything. Many of these examples don't even work. Eclipse gives warnings and errors from code copied and pasted from other people's examples. I can answer any questions that may assist in this case. Hopefully, this thread will help many BB developers in the future.

• Adding a column to a model at runtime (without additional tables) in rails

  I'm trying to give admins of my web application the ability to add some new fields to a model. The model is called Artwork and i would like to add, for instante, a test_column column at runtime. I'm just teting, so i added a simple link to do it, it will be of course parametric. I managed to do it through migrations: def test_migration_create Artwork.add_column :test_column, :integer flash[:notice] = "Added Column test_column to artworks" redirect_to :action => 'index' end def test_migration_delete Artwork.remove_column :test_column flash[:notice] = "Removed column test_column from artworks" redirect_to :action => 'index' end It works, the column gets added/ removed to/from the databse without issues. I'm using active_scaffold at the moment, so i get the test_column field in the form without adding anything. When i submit a create or an update, however, the test_column does not get updated and stay empty. Inspecting the parameters, i can see: Parameters: {"commit"=>"Update", "authenticity_token"=>"37Bo5pT2jeoXtyY1HgkEdIhglhz8iQL0i3XAx7vu9H4=", "id"=>"62", "record"=>{"number"=>"test_artwork", "author"=>"", "title"=>"Opera di Test", "test_column"=>"TEEST", "year"=>"", "description"=>""}} the test_column parameter is passed correctly.   Hi all, I'm developing an application using asp.net mvc, NHibernate and DDD. I have a service layer that are used by controllers of my application. Everything are using Unity to inject dependencies (ISessionFactory in repositories, repositories in services and services in controllers) and works fine. But, it's very common I need a method in service to get only object in my repository, like this (in service class): public class ProductService { private readonly IUnitOfWork _uow; private readonly IProductRepository _productRepository; public ProductService(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, IProductRepository productRepository) { this._uow = unitOfWork; this._productRepository = productRepository; } /* this method should be exists in DDD ??? • git: How to move last N commits made to master, into own branch?

  Hi all, I have a repository where I had been working on master branch having last committed some 10 or so commits which I now wish were in another branch, as they describe work that I now consider experimental (i am still learning good git practices). Basically I would like to have these last 10 commits starting from a point in master to form another branch instead, so that I can have my master in a release state (which is what I strive for.) So, this is what I have (rightmost X is the last commit good for release): b--b (feature B) / X--X--X--Z--Z--Z--Z--Z--Z (master) \ a--a--a (feature A) You can see that both X and Z are on master, while I want commits marked by Z (my feature Z work) to lie on their own feature branch, and so that rightmost X is at the tip of master forming a good master branch tip. I guess this is what I want: b--b (feature B) / X--X--X (master) \ \ \ Z--Z--Z--Z--Z--Z (feature Z - the branch I want Z on) a--a--a (feature A) That way I will have my master always ready for release, and merge A, B and Z features when the time comes. • Parsing large txt files in ruby taking a lot of time?

• Git + SoA, one repo or many?

  Normally, when I start up a new application, I'd create a new git repository for it. That's well accepted and plays nice with Github when I want to share my code. At work, I'm working in a service oriented architecture. One very common pattern is to add some code to two different applications at the same time - perhaps adding a model with a RESTful interface to one and a web frontend for managing it on another. Using separate git repositories has some warts in this case. Here are what I see as the downsides of doing separate repositories: I have to commit twice I can't correllate related commits very well No single place to go back and trace history - I'd love to be able to bring up all my commits for the day in a single place Forgetting to pull one repo or another is a gotcha On the other hand, I've used perforce a lot and its one giant repository model has lots of warts too. Perforce has features designed to let help you with those, git doesn't. Has anyone else run into this situation? How did you handle it? What worked well, and what didn't?

• Ruby, Python, or PHP?

  And so we return to the age old question - but with a few twists. This morning, I searched and read up on which web development language to learn first. I'm thinking Ruby, Python, or perhaps PHP. But I have a few questions before deciding. Background: I'm a year into C++ (through school), but want to get into web development. I have all summer to commit to one language, learn it, do some projects, get up some websites, and so on. Now my questions (and these are assuming that I should choose between Ruby, Python, and PHP - if I should choose a different language, let me know.): I hope to use whichever language I learn for websites/web apps. Some of the threads on stackoverflow suggested Python was the best overall language, but others were unanimous that Ruby was best specifically for web development. For a first language suited towards web development, which language do you recommend, and why? This might tie into the first question, but which language looks most promising for future work, future personal projects, and basically the future in general? I'm just a freshman in college. Ideally, the language I choose would be on the rise, community-wise and opportunity-wise. (One reason I'm leaning towards Ruby is that it seems a lot of the newer tech startups/successes are using it.)

• Looking for out-of-place directories in an SVN working copy?

  An annoyance that I sometimes come across with SVN is the working copy getting corrupted by one of the .svn folders getting moved from its original location. It doesn't happen often if you're careful and use the proper tools for all moves and renames, but it still somehow happens from time to time. First, does anyone know if there's a good way to catch the problem before a commit is even done? Cruise control usually catches the problem, but there are plenty of cases it wouldn't catch. Second, is there a quick and easy way to check for out-of-place .svn folder if I suspect that there is one? I can definitely do it manually by deducing what directory is out of place based on the compiler errors or by diffing the working copy with another clean checkout. But, this seems like a problem that SVN can diagnose in a second by giving me a list of all directories whose parent directory in the working copy doesn't match its parent directory in the repository. There there some way to have SVN give me a list like that? Thanks.

  I am using PHP version 5.4.4, and a MySQL database using InnoDB. I had been using PDO for awhile without utilizing transactions, and everything was working flawlessly. Then, I decided to try to implement transactions, and I keep getting Internal Server Error 500. • SVN Version Rollback Question

  Hello, I'm using SVN (TortoiseSVN) and often came into the following situation: I wanted to discard any changes since a specific (old) revision and turn all files back to this specific (old) version. Then I wanted to work further as if this specific (old) revision was the newest one, i.e. I wanted to be able to commit the specific old revision as a new revision. I found several solutions for this problem (for example stackoverflow.com/questions/402159/roll-back-or-revert-entire-svn-repository-to-an-older-revision or rustyrazorblade.com/2007/04/how-to-roll-back-commits-to-an-earlier-version-of-a-repository-in-svn/). However, I wonder if there is a simple way to roll back to a specific revision. I thought version control is just good for such things (or am I misunderstanding something?). Is there a simple command/button/etc. that takes an updates my local repository to an old revision and declares it to be the newest one? Since I suppose that there is no "built-in" function to do this, I wanted to know what reason lead the developers to the decision not to integrate this feature. Does anybody know this?

  Hi I am using Hibernate 3.0 , facing issue related to the char datatype field. I am trying to save Client pojo in the database, using following method. Problem is my client_id field is char(10) in the database. when client_id is 10 characters it works fine. but when client_id is less than ten characters it gives problem at the time of update. Rather than updating data it try to insert cleint record again and gives the unquie key exeception. i drill down the problem because of char(10) client_id field. it keeps space after client_id value upto 10 characters. • subversion: how to manage tweaked files

  Our group is considering moving to SVN. But, I can't seem to find a way to do the following: I need to make minor tweaks locally to about 20 files in the repository w/o having SVN consider them "changed" and included in the commit. (Changes like communication time-outs and logging levels.) Ideally I would want to merge the tweaked files to newer versions in the repository. (Keeping the tweaked local file up-to-date with committed changes form other users.) I can't imagine we're unique in wanting/needing this. Are there best practices around this type of use case? One thing I'm considering is putting all the tweaked files into a branched "tweaked" working copy. Then merging my tweaked files into my "official" working copy. Then using a script, which compares the "tweaked" and "official" working copies, to update my ignore list. The script would also un-ignore and alert me to any files that had tweaks and other changes that, presumably, needed to be committed to the repository. This seems kinda hacky and I can't imagine there's not a better way.

• Pickled my dictionary from ZODB but i got a less in size one?

  I use ZODB and i want to copy my 'database_1.fs' file to another 'database_2.fs', so I opened the root dictionary of that 'database_1.fs' and I (pickle.dump) it in a text file. Then I (pickle.load) it in a dictionary-variable, in the end I update the root dictionary of the other 'database_2.fs' with the dictionary-variable. It works, but I wonder why the size of the 'database_1.fs' not equal to the size of the other 'database_2.fs'. • git + partly shared files between branches/repositories. Is it possible?

  One team in company I work for has the following problem. They develop an application, which will have different builds (e.g. different design depending on customer). so they have some code shared between builds, and some specific to build. E.g. first build has (example is meaningless about files, it is just to understand the problem; I don't know exactly which code differs) /src/class1.java /src/class2.java /res/image1.png /res/image2.png second project contains /src/class1.java /src/class3.java /res/image1.png /res/image3.png as you see, both have class1.java and image1.png. Evething else is different. The project is much more complex of course, so to contain everything in one project is not comfortable... But also to make different branches and commit the same code to all of them is not comfortable... probably I picked wrong direction thinking about this problem, but I just took a look at git (we use svn), and it allows separated repositories. The question is: is it possible to make different branches in git, but tell it that "these files should be shared between them" and other files should be only in those branches. Then when developer commits class1.java git synchronizes it in all branches/repositorias etc. Maybe there is another solution which can be easy taken?

• Designers, Expression or SharePoint Designer, and real source control

  I'm trying desperately to move from VSS to a real source control system. Options include TFS and SVN. My designers need to keep their ability to modify source files and instantly preview their changes in a browser without having to commit their changes. Using FPSE with VSS, this works flawlessly, since saving a file causes the copy in the working folder on the dev server to be updated, so they can just save and refresh their browser which is pointed at the dev server. The site in question consists of 350k+ lines of classic ASP code and some new ASP.NET MVC. They only need to be able to modify views within the MVC code, not C#. Though Expression includes a version of Cassini for local debugging, Cassini does not support classic ASP. Surely someone has solved this problem before. It can't be necessary to install IIS on each designer's machine (this is absolutely untenable). I need a way to have a common working folder on a dev webserver updated whenever someone saves a file locally, just like using FPSE. I'd rather not write an FPSE proxy that knows how to talk to TFS/SVN. Any suggestions? (I know I've asked this question in the past, but I haven't yet found a solution.)
