• IP6 seems to be enabled - How do I configure it without interfering with IP4?

  I noticed that some of my Centos boxes have IP6 enabled, and seem to have addresses. I have no problem with this, but I would like to get a handle on it, and even connect to them using IP6. This would really help if for any reason DHCP has a hiccup. But I'm a bit lost as to where the configuration on my CentOS box is. (I am also on google researching this, but I like server fault! :) ) I am hoping that I would be able to log into this via the VPN because every now and then that DHCP device has a bad morning, and needs to be restarted. (I'm also looking into this issue, but someone else handles that, management separation gone mad!) It's a remote client, so it would be a lot easier for me to connect to these systems which seem to self configure, to use that as a pivot via ssh tunnels to get to other remote devices to continue to manage them, while out main route is fixed. I guess, my questions are How can I configure IP6 without interfering with IP4, and On CentOS, can I influence this auto configuration I seem to be seeing?

• Graphite not running

  I'm currently trying to install graphite 0.9.9 on a gentoo box using these instructions from the graphite wiki. Essentially, it fronts graphite using apache and mod_wsgi. Everything seems to have gone well, except that apache / the graphite webapp never seem to return a response to the web browser (the browser continuously waits to load the page). I've turned on the graphite debug info, but the only message in the log files is this, repeated over and over again in info.log (with the pid always changing): Thu Feb 23 01:59:38 2012 :: graphite.wsgi - pid 4810 - reloading search index These instructions have worked for me before to set up graphite on an Ubuntu machine. • How to verify power provided to processors is clean

  Once in a blue moon, I am seeing a blue screen of death on a shiny new Dell R7610 with a single 1100 Watt Dell-provided power supply on a beefy UPS. BCode is 101 (A clock interrupt was not received...), which some say is caused by under-volting a CPU. Naturally, I would have to contact Dell support, and their natural reaction would be to replace a motherboard, a power supply, or CPU, or a mixture of the above components. In synthetic benchmarks, system memory and CPU, as well as graphics memory and CPU perform admirably, staying up for hours and days. My questions are: Is power supply good enough for the application? Does it provide clean enough power to VRMs on the motherboard? Are VRMs good enough for dual Xeon E5-2665? Does C-states logic work correctly? Is there sufficient current provided to PCIe peripherals, such as disk controllers? P.S. Recently, I've gone through the ordeal with HP. They were nice and professional about it, but root cause was not established, and the HP machine still is less than 100%, giving me a blue screen of death once in a couple of months. Further testing shows significant decrease in performance on each of the x16 slots with Dell R7610 with A03 BIOS. But now it's running stable. HP machine has received a microcode update in September 2013 SUM (July BIOS) that makes it stable.

• Connecting a laptop to a TV via HDMI

  I just bought a new Dell XPS17 laptop (Win7) that only has HDMI output. My last 2 laptops had VGA, which I used to connect to my Sony Bravia 32" TV with no issues, but with the HDMI it's been quite a headache. Drivers for display adapters have been updated to the latest versions: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M I went to a store and plugged in to 4 different TVs from different manufacturers. A sales rep and I spent about 30 minutes being baffled by the results (which are the same as my current TV): Extreme buggy behavior in the Nvidia and Windows display/resolution control panel Can not extend or duplicate displays, can only select one Third and fourth output devices "randomly" detected by the Windows control panel Could not get the screen to fit the output (edges cut off on all sides by about a half inch) Resolution and colors less than perfect. Artifacts around text. Display "randomly" cuts out Defaults to TV output only when plugged in Can not change resolution on either device when connected No audio from the TV Plugged in to 3 monitors from different manufacturers: Defaults to duplicated displays when plugged in Everything works perfectly So far, four people have gone through all the settings in the latop with no luck. I had similar, but not exactly matching results with a different laptop. I'm using the Sony Bravia currently at home, but in order to get it to work I have to turn on the laptop, wait until the display shows up on it, close the lid, then cycle through each output channel on the TV until I come back around to the HDMI port again, but still I have the symptoms described above. However: Once in a while, it just works. Sometimes, seemingly randomly, the output fits the screen perfectly. Sometimes the audio comes through the speakers too, but not always. Usually my screen saver "Mystify" will come up with a message that it cannot be displayed due to a limitation of the video card, but then sometimes it works fine. These 3 things seem to be independent of each other and don't always happen together. So, is there any way to get the laptop to output correctly to a TV, or is it just not meant to be?

• Completely unintuitive Apache/PHP memory-freeing behavior

  Okay, this one's weird. I have a Turnkey Linux server with a gig of dedicated RAM. It's running WP3.2 with a boatload of plug-ins. It's a new site, so it has very limited traffic (other than search engines, maybe 20 hits a week). Now, for a few weeks, every few days, it would max out on main RAM, start eating up virtual RAM, and then crash. It's had this behavior for a while and I've been trying to figure out which element was causing the crash. Nine days ago, I pointed my external server monitor to this server. I wrote a 5-line HTML file (not PHP and not WP) that the server monitor accesses every minute, to see if the server is up. So, now, nine days later, the server has been rock solid, up all the time, no memory leak at all. I changed NOTHING on the server itself to see this behavior change. Have you EVER seen anything like this? All the server monitor is doing is retrieving a single, super-simple HTML file and all the memory leak problems have gone away. Weird, eh?

• Rebuilding LVM after RAID recovery

  I have 4 disks RAID-5ed to create md0, and another 4 disks RAID-5ed to create md1. These are then combined via LVM to create one partition. There was a power outage while I was gone, and when I got back, it looked like one of the disks in md1 was out of sync - mdadm kept claiming that it only could find 3 of the 4 drives. The only thing I could do to get anything to happen was to use mdadm --create on those four disks, then let it rebuild the array. This seemed like a bad idea to me, but none of the stuff I had was critical (although it'd take a while to get it all back), and a thread somewhere claimed that this would fix things. If this trashed all of my data, then I suppose you can stop reading and just tell me that. After waiting four hours for the array to rebuild, md1 looked fine (I guess), but the lvm was complaining about not being able to find a device with the correct UUID, presumably because md1 changed UUIDs. I used the pvcreate and vgcfgrestore commands as documented here. Attempting to run an lvchange -a y on it, however, gives me a resume ioctl failed message. Is there any hope for me to recover my data, or have I completely mucked it up?

• Master File Table Corrupt, any way to save data?

  hi. I've used search, but none of the results match my problem so I didn't have to ask separate question. I've Installed Windows 7 RTM recently and since then partitions located on one of my HDDs have gone "crazy". They used to "freeze" and didn't open in explorer for some time (minute or two, usually), sometimes all partitions of the drive wouldn't show until reboot and finally, one of those partitions started showing "disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" warning, it appeared in Disk Management window as RAW and chkdsk showed "mft corrupt". There were no important data on the partition and I didn't have enough time to analyze the problem at the moment, so I just reformatted it and ran antivirus scan on system. After that problem settled for some time, but yesterday the problematic HDD vanished again from the system. After reboot chkdsk identified mft of four partitions corrupt and now they are all in same conditions as the above mentioned one. But the difference is that the files stored in them are extremely important. and just for info: I upgraded from Win7 build 7077, but had some performance issues, so I reformatted system drive and installed fresh Win7 RTM on it. I've downloaded TestDisk and it shows all the partitions marked as NTFS (not RAW) and my knowledge of the program wasn't sufficient to obtain any other info from it :-) and the images that could help describe the problem (sorry, I'm not allowed to post images and more than one hyperlink): http:// img22.imageshack.us/img22/5909/chkdskz.jpg http:// img198.imageshack.us/img198/5576/computeray.jpg I'm interested, is there a way to let me restore the MFT or just access files so I can backup them before reformatting the drive. • Move a screen session back to its original PID

  Installed McMyAdmin (minecraft manager) on Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit. Wrote my own service to start McMyAdmin (.net app running in Mono) in its own screen session, and be able to inject proper McMyAdmin commands into that session with the init.d script. Its been running great! Today, I decided to start installing a Source dedicated server (counterstrike pro mod) I determine its going to be a long download process so I quit the process and fire up a fresh screen session called "source". I paste the command in, but it has a space at the begining and bash complains of ignoring semaphores or some such. I detach and reattach the session. Its sliding like butter. I ctrl+a-d out of the session and start exploring the new folder structure and figure out where I need to place a symbolic link. I go to resume that screen and this is what I see: $screen -r source There are several suitable screens on 20091.source (12/02/12 22:59:53) (Detached) 19972.source (12/02/12 22:57:31) (Detached) 917.minecraft (11/30/12 15:30:37) (Attached) It appears I am connected to the minecraft screen?!?!?! So I attach to the other screens one at a time. minecraft is running in 19972.source and sourceds is running in 20091.source So how the hell did I move the minecraft process to another session called source and my main terminal is now "attached" to the minecraft screen? more: I just used exit to quit the putty session, then logged back in, its still the same. did that 3 more times and now the minecraft screen is gone and everything is acting as it should except, of course, for the session name and start time of the "new" minecraft screen. Should I just submit this as a bug for GNU screen?

• Creating a bootable USB drive from a distro split over two DVD ISOs

  I am searching and not finding the right way to do this. Please note, I don't think I'm trying for anything strange here. I just want to make a bootable USB stick of a single OS that happens to be larger than one DVD and happens to be larger than FAT32 will allow for in a single file. On our slow connection I spent a long time downloading CentOS 5.9's two DVD ISOs: CentOS-5.9-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso (4.4 GB) CentOS-5.9-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso (718 MB) I have a USB stick that I want to somehow get these two ISOs on. Since the first one is 4.4 GB, I can't use ISO2USB because it insists on FAT32. I cannot find an alternative that lets you specify more than one ISO image--of the same distro, I'm not trying for some fancy multi-boot thing--to put on the same stick. I guess I should have downloaded the CD ISOs, but I thought I was "saving time" because then I wouldn't have as many files to run through the md5 checker. There's no IMG file of the whole thing (only a net install version, which I don't want--I want to pre-download everything) otherwise I would've gone for that. So, given that I have these two DVD ISOs, how can I get them on a stick that will boot and make use of both of them properly to install CentOS somewhere? Again, I don't think this is anything out of the ordinary, yet I can't find software/docs that seem to support this. Am I stuck re-downloading everything in CD-sized ISOs just to do this? I found this, but it doesn't run on Windows. I am using Windows to prepare the stick.

• Web Hosting: Any web host that supports files more than 50,000 in number?

  Hi all, For my PHP & mySQL based application, I am trying to buy website hosting from a host who does not have a limit on the number of files I carry in my hosting account. Almost all the websites have a common limit of 50,000 files (some websites call it 50,000 nodes). The rest(to the extent of my search) are not even close. I have gone through the various websites, Googled lot of information, have spoken with the customer service of the hosting companies and they said that they have a limit of 50,000 files and that's why they call it the LIMIT. Now I have my application, which is a kind of social networking website, where people can upload various files of varying file size. So say if 50,000 users were to join the website and upload 1 file each, the limit of 50,000 will be reached very easily and my 50,001 customer will start facing file upload problems (& so will my account). So I would like to know if there's any website hosting services that do NOT levy such restrictions. In summary, I need the following options: No maximum file limit (more than 50,000 files in account). No maximum file upload limit in server setting (10MB, 12MB, 15MB, 20MB, etc.). Ability to upload files of various types (zip, flv, jg, png, etc.). Ability to stream Audio and Video (live audio & video not necessary). Access to .htaccess Access to php.ini, my.cnf or my.ini (this would be a plus) Supports SSL. Provides dedicated hosting(& IP) as well. Monthly payments without contracts are a plus. • Why can't I get out of display mirror mode?

  I've been running Ubuntu (10.04.1 LTS, 64-bit) for a while and just replaced my hardware with a faster machine with an ATI Radeon HD 5700 video card. I've got twin 1920 x 1080 displays. I downloaded the latest driver (ati-driver-installer-10-9-x86.x86_64.run) from the ATI web site and installed that. I've gone through a few rounds of playing with /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and can't get things right. At the moment, it's in display mirroring mode, and I can't figure out how to get it out of mirror mode. If I run Monitor Preferences, there's a "Same image in all monitors" checkbox. If I uncheck that, the little preview window switches to show two monitors. When I click Apply, it asks me to log out and log back in again. When I do that, I'm right back to mirrored mode. What's really weird is that I'm currently running a copy of xorg.conf from a coworker's machine. He's got identical hardware, and his display works fine. So, I'm inclined to think there's something else going on other than the conf file. Any ideas what might be wrong?

• Using rsync to migrate files between windows servers: problems with Excel spreadsheets

  We've been migrating about 220 GB of data from a Windows 2003 Server to a Windows 2008 Server, and because of the time it would take to copy that data and the necessity of keeping it available for users, I came up with the idea of using rsync on an Ubuntu server to broker the migration. (I might have gone for a proper Windows solution - but the applications I found were a bit pricey for a one-shot like this - and permissions are not a problem). All well and good - and today I'm making the last sync and confirming that the new server is up-to-date using diff, but I"ve noticed an odd thing with Excel spreadsheets (.xls). Every instance of an Excel spreadsheet that has already been copied in a previous in a previous synchronisation is being marked as "already up-to-date" by rsync. However, when I then run a diff, I'm told that the files differ. I'm manually copying them, as there are but a handful, but I was wondering what might be causing this. No other filetype in the entire 220 GB tree has had any problem like this - just the Excel/xls files. It'd be great if someone could come up with an explanation.

• How to create a static IP on Windows Server 2008 R2 so I can access the server remotely

  I have just purchased a HP Proliant N40L which I am intending to use as a NAS, learning tool and just in general something to mess around with. As a student via the Microsoft dreamspark program I can get a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 which I am using as the OS. So that I can remote to the box from outside of my local network and so that I can stream media from it to my PS3, I have read that I need to create a static IP for the server and use port forwarding to forward to this IP so I can remote in. Is this correct? I am not really sure how to do this and if I need to make these changes on my router configuration, on the OS or both. I am a novice when it comes to networking however most resources for Windows server 2008 R2 seem to assume a fair amount of experience already. I realise that using this particular OS may seem like overkill for what I currently wish to do with it (stream content to other devices and backup) but as I can get a copy for free it seems sensible. Edit: From reading answers posted I feel I should give more information. I have now tried to add a static IP address using my router configuration settings. I have used the getmac command to get the mac address of the server. My ISP is Virgin Media and I have gone to the LAN IP section and I have added an IP address to the DHCP Reservation Lease Info. I can now use remote desktop connection internally to remote to the server (so I am assuming assigning this IP has worked). How do I configure this on the OS as well? I am also unsure on how I would remote to this machine outside of my local network?

• Can Internet data be used by malware when PC off?

  I have noticed over the last month that my off peak data has been used at a rate of approx 350MB per hour - this has meant that I have gone over my quota and slowed down by my ISP to 256k. There is no one in the house using it (2am-8am is my ISPs off peak hours) at that time. My PC and other wireless devices (ipad and iphone) are turned off. I have changed the wireless password on my modem 3 times and it is now 30 digits long. So I don't think someone else is using my wireless access between 2-8am. It has been suggested by my ISP that I may have malware/spyware on my computer. Sorry for my ignorance, but can malware still run if the PC is off? I did look at my modem's log and followed an IP address to a service called Amazon Simple server Storage. Could this company possibly be the culprit? I am not too tech savvy, so any assistance appreciated. I have run a barrage of spyware cleaning software eg malware bytes; spy bot etc.... Cheers Val

• Files being rolled back on server 2008 R2

  I've got a weird situation occurring on my dev server. Randomly, and for no reason that I can see, files are being rolled back to an earlier version! This has happened twice now - the first time I assumed I'd done something wrong somewhere, restored the file I was after from a backup and gave it no further thought. The second time, just now, it happened to a folder containing just a few files that I was working on - suddenly all the changes I'd made over the last day or two were gone! (I know, commit more often, ay?). Thankfully I have a daily backup and so have recovered my files, but I'm very concerned about this and need to understand how and why it's happened. The only change made between file states is that I enabled sharing on a completely unrelated folder. I'm developing an app on Railo, which is running on Tomcat. The code was all fine and in c:\websites\appname. I shared the 'Railo' folder, which is c:\railo in order to allow my IDE access to the logs generated by the app (contained in c:\railo\tomcat\logs) and when I reloaded the app, the code was reverted to a few days ago! I'm at a complete loss here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

• How can I get Pinch to Zoom back in Desktop mode?

  Windows 7 had an old implimentation of Pinch to Zoom where bringing your fingers apart/together would act similar to ctrl + +/-, the standard zoom. It's not as nice as granular zoom (like iOS/Android use) but it worked. Most notably it doesn't work in Chrome (did before) but I haven't noticed it working in any other apps. In windows 8 desktop mode, pinch to zoom doesn't seem to work at all. It doesn't even work in One Note 2010, which, if I recall correctly, had granular zoom in Windows 7. I have an (older) 2 touch point multi-touch monitor, and I can see the visual feedback that the two touch points and coming closer/farther apart, but it doesn't zoom. Note I'm using the touchscreen, not a touchpad or the Arch mouse or other peripherals. Can I enable this somehow or is it gone from Desktop mode? It works fine in Metro apps. Additionally I get weird visual feedback when placing my second finger on the screen; a shrinking transparent square appears somewhere between the two fingers, visually similar to the Right Click visual queue when long-pressing. It's not a right click though, I can't tell what, if anything, it's doing.

• How to completely disable IPv6 for loopback interface on RHEL 5.6

  I've done lots of research on how to disable IPv6 on RedHat Linux and I have it almost completely disabled. However the loopback interface is still getting an inet6 loopback address (::1/128). I can't find where IPV6 is still enabled for loopback.   First off let me say that I'm not a network admin or server guy, I know very little about that stuff. What I'm trying to do is setup a virtualized domain using hyper-V. Here is the configuration: Physical Server: 4Mb RAM Windows Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V Virtual Environment: One Domain Controller running Windows Server 2008 R2 One Client running Windows Server 2008 R2 I have been successful in setting up a virtual domain controller and adding a virtual client to that domain controller but I'm stuck at trying to give the virtual Environment Internet access. I can give the client VM Internet access if I remove them from the virtual domain but once I add them back to the virtual domain, Internet access is gone. I've read articles describing many different ways this can be done (using RRAS with NAT, using a wireless connection, etc...) but all of those articles only cover a small piece of the setup and also seem to be geared towards people who know there way around networking and servers which I don't. I'd like to know more but my thing is software development and I have my hands full trying to keep up with everything in that realm. I simply want to setup a virtual domain with Internet access for testing. Can anyone point me to any "for Dummy's" type information on how to setup this type of environment or can anyone provide this kind of step-by-step help. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  I botched a transfer of a VM from one harddisk to the other. Now I'm left with the base vdi and a whole bunch of snapshots. My steps Copied old VM directory over to new HDD Deleted old VM and added new VM using using Machine-add and providing the old XML file Couldn't add base vdi file due to conflict so changed the UUID of base vdi with VBOXMANGE.EXE internalcommands sethduuid Attempt to rollback to a snapshot, but it seems the VM is looking for the snapshots on the old HDD (which is formatted and gone) This is the error (networked is the name): Failed to restore the snapshot networked of the virtual machine lfs. Could not open the medium 'H:\vm\ft.vdi'. VD: error VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND opening image file 'H:\vm\ft.vdi' (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Medium Interface: IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd} The old HDD was drive H: the new one is drive N: How can I modify the snapshots/VM to look in N:\vm\ft.vdi for the base vdi? I've already set the default settings in VirtualBox in general (default vm/vm snapshot location). Or if not that how can I merge the old snap shot with the base vdi given that the only things that have changed is the base vdi's UUID? Thanks

• All of the NTFS hard links damaged, where are hardlinks stored and how to recover them?

  This is Windows 7 x64 sp1 on a NTFS file system. All hardlinks within C:\Windows\System32 folder disappear, and the Windows can't boot, because even the osloader, C:\Windows\System32\boot\Winload.exe also disappeared. Nevertheless, the original files are still located in the corresponding C:\Windows\winsxs folders. After booting into the Recovery Environment, and copied one Winload.exe (x64) from other folder, Windows gave an error pointing out that "ntoskrnl.exe is corrupted or missing...its file digital signature cannot be verified" In trying to boot in Safe Mode, the message above was shown after a screen prompting "Loaded \Windows\system32\config\system" Because at this early booting stage, smss.exe was still not loaded, so there is not any dumping and logs. Based on my study, ntoskrnl.exe depends on the following files: C:\windows\system32\PSHED.DLL C:\Windows\System32\hal.dll C:\Windows\System32\kdcom.dll C:\Windows\System32\clfs.sys C:\Windows\System32\ci.dll All those files above are copied from their corresponding folders and verified their md5 with a well-operating Windows 7 x64 SP1. But the booting error is still the same: "ntoskrnl.exe is corrupted or missing..." Background: 1. Before the reboot, there was an windows update going on. Then something unknown happen, almost all processes were broken to run, including the windows task manager, taskmgr.exe. After mount the hard disk to other computer, it seems that all hardlinks within C:\Windows\System32 folder were gone. I tried several data recovery software, but they are not be able to find those disappeared NTFS hard links. So the question is: Where are information about those hard links stored? And how to recover them? Are they depend on some windows service or stored in the registry?

• Dual DC Time Service

  I believe I'm having an issue with my Domain Controllers and Time Server. On my back up DC, I keep seeing a warning stating "The time service has stopped advertising as a time source because the local clock is not synchronized." Does this mean that my backup DC believes it's a Time Server? My PDC should be the time server and I have gone through setting up the PDC as the time server. I was not around for the original setup of the time server with the old PDC and Backup DC. But I believe the old PDC was the time server so I setup the new PDC as the new time server, when I decommissioned the old PDC. Is it possible that the Backup DC was setup as the time server and it still thinks it's suppose to be giving out time to everyone? • How do you set max execution time of PHP's CLI component?

  How do you set max execution time of PHP's CLI component? I have a CLI script that has gone into a infinite loop and I'm not sure how to kill it without restarting. I used quicksilver to launch it, so I can't press control+c at the command line. I tried running ps -A (show all processes) but php is not showing up in that list, so perhaps it has timed out on it's own - but how do you manually set the time limit? I tried to find information about where I should set the max_execution_time setting, I'm used to setting this for the version of PHP that runs with apache, but I have no idea where to set it for the version of PHP that lives in /usr/bin. I did see the follow quote, which does seem to be accurate (see screenshot below), but having an unlimited execution time doesn't seem like a good idea. Keep in mind that for CLI SAPI max_execution_time is hardcoded to 0. So it seems to be changed by ini_set or set_time_limit but it isn't, actually. The only references I've found to this strange decision are deep in bugtracker (http://bugs.php.net/37306) and in php.ini (comments for 'max_execution_time' directive). (via http://php.net/manual/en/function.set-time-limit.php) ini_set('max_execution_time') has no effect. I also tried the same thing and go the same result with set_time_limit(7).
