• Dual boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10 across a reboot

  My Setup: I have two separate SSDs, and each contains an independently bootable OS - W8 and U12.10. From my extremely limited knowledge, this means each has a functioning EFI partition(?). My default boot order (GA-Z68XP-UD3P mobo with UEFI firmware update) boots the UEFI partition containing windows first, but if I enter the BIOS I can select the "ubuntu" entry to successfully boot ubuntu. Both drives are GPT, and are EFI boots. What I want to do: Reboot Windows 8, re-enter W8 (this is happening now due to the default boot order). What I want to change, however, is to boot into Ubuntu if i reboot from ubuntu. Essentially, I would like to work within one OS unless I consciously choose otherwise. Normally, I would not even ask to something I thought was impossible, but... Why I think this is possible: When trying EasyBCD to add ubuntu to the W8 UEFI bootloader, I noticed an "iReboot" addon or something that allows you to select which OS to boot into from within the OS. Note that I ended up not using the NeoGrub entry to chain Ubuntu off the W8 bootloader because I couldn't get much help with it. Is this possible? Have I had too much coffee and gone insane? • Data recovery; nearly 1 tb of movies on a WD 3.5 tb personal cloud drive disappears with scanty traces

  I have a great collection of movies that I had stored in a logical mesh of folder on my 3.5 tb WD personal cloud drive. I woke up 1 morning and found that everything was fine with my data on this drive, except for my movie collection: There were two great folders, one "2sort" nd the other "segregated". out of all the segregated sub folders, only letter C D and 2 or 3 others remain. and the 2 sort folder, which has umpteen subfolders, amounting to more than 0.5 tb. is.. it's just gone!! this is a great downfall.. now this is a personal cloud drive and has no usb port etc. unfortunately to hardwire and recover files.. now I'm sure there are softwares out there that can help me recover my beloved movies from such an interestingly "hard-to-reach" (should I say?) device? what may that software be compadre, my happiness lies within your answer.. thank you.. remember, recovery software or (WD) personal cloud. :) these ovies were All, "hand-picked", over the course of ten years.. I just never catalogued my collection.. if I could just get the "list" of my lost collection, that'd be enough.. recovering em would be a bonus.. but they out to be damaged if I were to somehow recover you know? still, I'm certain they're all intact.. I guess the file index just got corrupted.. There surely is a veil of some sort that need to be thrown or pushed aside to reveal my movies.. what software can do/does that? thanks immensely!

• How to resume XMPP groupchat window in Irssi (using bitlbee)?

  I use Bitlbee to chat in XMPP-networks within my IRC-client Irssi. This works great so far, and recently I started using XMPP Multi User Chats as an alternative to IRC-channels. I set up a channel using chat add <account> <[email protected]> in the &bitlbee control window, set chan <room> set autojoin true and entered /join #room in the &bitlbee window to join that groupchat. It then appears as a unique Irssi window in the status bar. This seems to work ok too, but with one exception: Since I idle in the channels 24/7 my irssi has to cope with the every-night-24h-DSL-disconnection by the ISP. After it automatically reconnects, it does kind of rejoin that XMPP-groupchat, but the traffic of the groupchat does not go back to the unique irssi window, but keeps flooding &bitlbee with messages from root telling me about a Groupchat Message from unknown JID <jid>: <message> - which is the traffic of the groupchat. The unique groupchat window is gone after the reconnect, and I will again have to go /join #room in &bitlbee to get it back. Even worse, the window number is unused before I rejoin the groupchat, and if I get a query from any network, the window nests in that unused window spot, so I will first have to remove that query from the spot, and then move the rejoined groupchat to that window number. I want my groupchat window to resume after the reconnect just like every other IRC channel too. How can I get this done? Any ideas?

• Can I use HP Recovery Discs for a different hard drive capacity and make?

  About two years ago I created HP Recovery Discs (3 of them). Now my hard drive has crashed and new one is still a week from delivery. I was reading up on how to reinstall the genuine OS using the Recovery Discs as i was not given any Windows 7 installation discs. I did my bit of research after getting answers from the community on what these discs do and found out on other sites that people experience issues when recovering their OS from the disc. Especially when they change the make or capacity of the harddrive. Unfortunately I had to change the make as the hard drive that came built in has gone out of production. This question is just a part of my checklist to avoid problems when recovering the OS. I have: HP DV4-2126TX (available only in India I guess) I had: Seagate Momentus 320 GB I ordered: Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Is there a possibility to encounter any problems due to the changed capacity and make? I only want my genuine OS and drivers – not my data. I was told that Disc 1 contained the OS and drivers, and the rest of the discs contained data. I couldn't verify that.

• Scripted redirection for Outlook 2003

  We have a staff member in sales who has gone onto a 4 day week (getting ready for retirement), so each Thursday afternoon her email needs to be forwarded to another user and each Friday afternoon it needs to be set back. I'm using the VBS script below to do this, run via the Task Scheduler. Although the script appears to do it's job, based on what I see when I view the user's Exchange settings, Exchange doesn't always recognise that the setting has changed. e.g. Last Thursday the forwarding was a enabled and worked correctly. On Friday the script did it's thing to clear the forwarding but Exchange continued to forward messages all weekend. I found that I can force Exchange to honour the changed setting be merely opening and closing the user's properties in ADUC. Of course I don't want to have to do that. Is there a non-manual way I can have Exchange read and honour the setting? • Volume is no longer showing in Raid Controller BIOS and in Windows

  Hi all, I have installed some critical Windows Updates yesterday and now my external RAID Volume no longer shows in Windows Vista x64. All updates went through successfully. From their description, I cannot see how they should relate to the issue, but this is the only change that happened, so who knows. Anyway, here is the details: I have an external eSata enclosure that is running on a SiI4726 controller. I can connect to the controller with it's management utility from the computer the enclosure is connected to. The three drives in the enclosure show up as JBODs. I had those drives configured to be one logical RAID5 drive. RAID management is done through a SiI3132 SoftRaid controller. The Raid Management Utility just shows empty channels where it usually shows the Raid Group. In the Windows Disk Manager, I can see an unknown unitialized device. This is fine according to the setup manual. What it doesn't show is my Raid drive. It's gone. Also, when booting Windows, the BIOS of the controller used to show the RAID volume before booting the OS. This is not happening anymore. Updating drivers and firmware did not help. I have made sure the drivers and firmware are compatible to each others. And like I said, it used to work before. Any clues?

• Restore a database with LDF file only

  First of all, i know how stupid it is not to have a any backup. I can't help it, but i have to (try) to solve it. I have a transaction log (LDF) file from a SQL Server 2000 database that contains all transactions since the creation of the database. No truncation has been done. The MDF file is gone. Probably because of some disk failure. There is no backup. Not from the original database and not from the transaction log. I have tried to link the transaction log to a new clean database. But (ofcourse) that failed because SQL Server checks the identity of both files. I have read about software that can read the transaction log. ApexSQL seems to do that. I tried to install the trial version but it gives weird errors when trying to start the program. Anyone knows a solution for me? It may contain third party software, but i prefer a clean SQL Server solution.

• Setting a subdomain to access home machine with windows remote desktop

  I'm trying to remotely connect to home machine through Windows Remote Desktop (amongst other things, but this is currently my primary focus). I can do this fine using my home WAN's static IP (thank god for cable!) with port-forwarding, but I would like to access it from a subdomain of my web-site (e.g. home.mydomain.co.uk). In the cPanel for my hosting account, I've gone into DNS zones and altered the A-record to point to my WAN's IP, which I thought should do the job, but I still cannot connect. When I ping the subdomain, I get my web-host's IP, which I guess is to be expected as I believe the DNS of the host domain is used first, then my server handles the redirection of traffic to the IP in the A-record. Is this the correct idea? Do A-record changes suffer from the same propagation delays as DNS record changes, as I suppose that could explain it? • Fedora 19 no longer bootable

  I had fedora dual-booted with windows on my laptop for a while but with windows refresh grub was gone and my system directly booted windows. I booted fedora with my systems boot options and with this tutorial: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GRUB_2 I reinstalled grub2 but then had my system booted into an empty grub prompt: grub So I found the drive containing vmlinuz and initramfs (completely sure about thair location and versions) and tried to manually boot it but after the boot command it said: no suitable video mode found booting in blind mode and nothing happened. Such a tragedy... I have already tried to use live disks rescue system. Funny but troubleshooting options don't apear on my laptop while they do on my desktop pc. I cant even go to boot prompt on my lenovo idepad z400 laptop. I also tried EasyBCD so maybe I could boot it with windows but it comes up with this error: missing AutoNeoGrub().mbr Now I have removed the grub prompt (don't know why) and its really hard for me to reinstall my dearly customized fedora. If anyone knows a way to help boot it again or reinstall it keeping my files and installations I really need it. Thanks PS:I have already tried Boot-repair Disk but it asks me to enable the repo containing grub-efi on my fedora to reinstall the grub2 and fix the boot for me (how could i?).

• Exchange Full Access issue

  I was just hired as a System Admin for a small company. They use Exchange 2010 for their Mail Server. I've never had a permission issue like this with Exchange because I worked for a larger firm with less responsibility before. Their old system admin is LONG GONE, so I can't ask him what he did. The issue: Right now ANYONE can gain access to a mailbox and view the mail in the mailbox. This is disabled by default you say and you have to grant them full access ? You are right, but the old System Admin I guess didn't know what he was doing. SO right now user A can open up user B mailbox with out being granted permission. So here is what I found out. Every user in EMC Full Access Permission has Exchange Server group granted. Within the Exchange Server Group, Domain User's is a Member Of. Within Domain User's all user's are listed as Members. So my guess is because of this all users can access ANY mailbox? Well GOOD News. The company is small (35 people) and they are not computer savvy, so hopefully no one has figured out they can open anyone's mailbox.(From what I can tell no). Next thing I did was with my domain user in EMC, delete Exchange Servers Group in FUll Access Permissions and grant access to my user. I made sure that my memeber was apart of the Exchange Server Group. Went to our OWA site and now I don't have permission to my own mailbox. Re did everything to the way it was with my user and now I'm stuck. Any help? I would think granting a single user that is in the Exchange Server group, Full Access to that mailbox would enable them to open that mailbox???? I guess I am wrong.

• Youtube has no voice but the music continues just fine?

  PC CONFIG: gigabyte EP45C UD3R with the realtek HD onboard 4gb dual channel Qcore 2.83ghz When i watch to videos on youtube now the voice some times is in static and some times so low that you can hear it while the sound continues just fine... For example if can hear to things like guitar or a train etc but the voice of whoever is speaking is gone or very low or pure static when watching the videos. I know some videos have a really great quality and some are HD 1080p so this was something not expected to happen. I can aswell play videos on my WMP11 just fine i have ccc-p installed also tried k-lite, both on the latest stable avaiable. I havent tried anything else related to flash but something is either wrong with my drivers or youtube. I have installed the latest drivers to make sure they are up-to-date but this didnt help either. What i have tried so far: removed the audio drivers and re-installed remove any codec pack i had and re-installed k-lite, test, didnt worked remove any codec pack i had and re-installed cccp, test, didnt worked checked the control panel sound configurations, tried chaging to phone stereo, to 5.1 which is what my headphone is. checked the realtek manager, tried changing the sound channels from 2CH to 6CH to reflect my headphone, didnt work. rebooted after every change of the above tries. tried chrome, firefox and internet explorer with the same results didnt w

• php-cgi.exe Taking out server, multiple running

  I have been using ZendServer CE for over a year and have never had a problem. Recently, about a week or two ago I have found my server to be acting up and even causing RDP to be un-connectable. After some looking around I have 20, 25, 30+ php-cgi.exe running. With my IIS7 service starting with Windows once my server started all these php-cgi.exe would start running (even though the limit is 10) and I could not even connect to it. After disabling the Web Server as startup which stops php-cgi.exe from running the server runs flawless, like it always has. As soon as I run the web server all these odd issues start. I have a post over at Zend http://forums.zend.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=41043&p=95133 where I was told to update my Zend install. After doing so this issue has not gone away. Even running 1 php-cgi.exe (somehow 2 start anyway) the server begins to go silly. The first issue I find myself with running php-cgi.exe is that Windows Services, weather be stock or using FireDaemon begin to lag, slow start, crash, etc. If anyone can help me with this I would GREATLY appreciate it. At this time I am forced to look for a alternative to running PHP other than cgi as it simply takes out the whole box. On another note, I run this same version of Zend on a similar server with no issues. Starting to think its a IIS issue. (UPDATE) Installed newest version of PHP, separate from Zend, same issue. • Oracle 11g Data Guard over a WAN

  Hi - We are in process of looking at using Oracle's Data Guard to replicate our 11g instance from a colo facility in Washington DC to Chicago. To give some basics we have approximately 25TB of storage and a healthy transaction rate in the 1-2K/sec range. Also, because we are processing data in real-time we have a 24x7x365 requirement for processing data. We don't have any respites as far as volume except for system upgrades (once every few months) where we take the system offline but then course experience a spike in transactions when we bring the system back on-line. Ideally we would want the second instance in the DG configuration semi-online in a read-only fashion for reports/etc. We evaluated DG in 10g and were not overly impressed and research seemed to show that earlier versions had issues with replication over a WAN but I have heard good things about modifications the product has gone through w/ 11g. Can anyone confirm an instance of this size and transaction rate being replicated over a WAN and if so what is the general latency? An information or experiences with a DG implementation that is of this size and scope would really be helpful (or larger - I also realize we are still relatively small compared to many others out there). • windows 7 clock jumps back about every hour + internet disconnects

  I have the weirdest problem, for the last few days every hour or so (not exact) the clock jumps about back in jumps of 15 to 60 minutes and after some time the internet disconnects. i can reconnect the internet by unplugging and plugging back the network cable. This is the second time this problem happens to me, the first time was when I installed VirtualBox. whaen I removed it the problem was gone. This time I have no idea what triggered it, the only thing I installed about the time the problem started was iTunes update (10.5.1) I tried removing it but the problem remained. (also tried to remove other programs i installed day or 2 before and it also didn't help) also, this is not a VM and currently I don't have any VM software. any ideas..? UPDATE since the solution is in the comments i'll write it here - apparently the windows time service got broken, this is the fix: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738995(WS.10).aspx (run "fix it" from IE browser only) UPDATE 2 The fix didn't work, about 2 hours passed and first the internet disconnected and then the clock jumped back... This probably means that the problem is not only in the clock

  My server works well about half a year. But a strange thing happened (several hours before). This server has two IP-address 58.17.85.19 & 117.21.178.19 When I navigate to http://58.17.85.19, nothing different as before. But http://117.21.178.19 will return a "302 Object moved" and become a "redirect loop" I do some test: ($cmd = "wget http://117.21.178.19/?xx=$RANDOM --max-redirect 0 -S --no-cache -O -") Step by step: run $cmd on my PC and my firend's one (we live in two side of China, far away). - got 302 run $cmd on this server - got 200 OK (content is correct result of index.php) run $cmd on another server in same computer room - got 200 OK telnet from my PC and build an HTTP request (type by hand) - got 200 OK shutdown php-fpm, run $cmd on my PC - got 302 run $cmd on server - 502 Bad Gateway shutdown nginx, run $cmd on both the server and my PC - Connection refused. create iptables rule, refuse any connection to 58.17.85.19:80. run nc -l 80 -k -vvv on server and run $cmd on my PC NC show me that.... Server accept connection (Connection from [my ip]) My connection closed ! (Remove fd xx from list) wget dump out response - got 302 I know that, normaly, NC will accept connection, then dump HTTP request from client, and client will wait for response. this connection will open forever(infact client will close connection becouse timeout), becouse NC can't give any response. So... where my request gone? who send an response to the client? some virus on my server system? If so, why 58.17.85.19 didn't has this error? or... I was attacked by a middleman?

• Cannot make bind9 forward DNS query to subdomain unless recursive enabled

  I am trying to develop my own dynamic DNS. I'm running my own custom DNS for the subdomain on port 5353. ASCII diagram: INET --->:53 Bind 9 --->:5353 node.js | V zone_files I have example.com. The node.js DNS is for dyn.example.com. In my /etc/bind/named.conf.local I have: zone "example.com" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.com.example"; allow-transfer { zonetxfrsafe; }; }; zone "dyn.example.com" IN { # DYNAMIC type forward; forwarders { 127.0.0.1 port 5353; }; forward only; }; I've even gone so far as to add a NS in my example.com zone file: $TTL 86400 @ IN SOA ns.example.com. hostmaster.example.com. ( 2013070104 ; Serial 7200 ; Refresh 1200 ; Retry 2419200 ; Expire 86400 ) ; Negative Cache TTL ; NS ns ; inet of our nameserver ns A 1.2.3.4 ; NS record for subdomain dyn NS ns When I attempt to get a record from the subdomain server it doesn't get forwarded: dig @127.0.0.1 test.dyn.example.com However if I turn recursive on in /etc/bind/named.conf.options: options { recursion yes; } .. then I CAN see the request going to the subdomain server. But I don't want recursion yes; in my Bind configuration as it is poor security practice (and allows all-and-sundry requests that are not related to my managed zones). How does one forward (proxy) zone queries for just one zone? Or do I give up on Bind altogether and find a DNS server that can actually forward specific queries?

• Prevent rmdir -p from traversing above a certain directory

  I hacked together this script to rsync some files over ssh. The --remove-source-files option of rsync seems to remove the files it transfers, which is what I want. However, I also want the directories those files are placed in to be gone as well. The current part of the find command, -exec rmdir -p {} ; tries to remove the parent directory (in this case, /srv/torrents), but fails because it doesn't have the right permissions. What I'd like to do is stop rmdir from traversing above the directory find is run in, or find another solution to get rid of all the empty folders. I've thought of using some kind of loop with find and running rmdir without the -p switch, but I thought it wouldn't work out. Essentially, is there an alternative way to remove all the empty directories under the parent directory? • Static IP addressing issue in Ubuntu on BeagleBoneBlack Rev C

  I have my BBB configured to use a static IP address using the following in the file /etc/network/interfaces: allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.0.0 This seems to work ok on boot, but when the ethernet cable is unplugged and then plugged back in, I lose the IP address. Any ideas what's going on here? Another weird symptom: If I boot the BBB with the network cable unplugged, but the switch it's plugged into off, I'll get my static IP. But, when I turn the switch on, I'll get a DHCP-assigned address. This is even though I have it configured with a static IP address. One last thing. If I ifdown etho, the interface will be gone when I do an ifconfig. If I wait a few seconds, though, and then re-run ifconfig, it will reappear, without an IP address. (Before I disabled IPv6, I used to get a IPv4 DHCP address in this case... weird). • How to protect folder privacy against unethical network administrators? [closed]

  I just need a technical solution for the sake of my group's shared passwords, projects, works, etc. safety. Our network has Active Directory with public/groups/users and NTFS permissions, under a Windows Server 2003 which will soon migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2. Our IT crowd is small, consisting of 2 DBAs, 4 designers, 6 developers (including me), 2 netadmins and (a lot of) tech supporters, everyone has local admin rights. Those 2 network admins weren't the ones who set the network up, they just took the lift recently when the previous ones quit. We usually find them laughing at private contents from users stored in the groups AD, sabotaging documents that don't match their personal tastes and, finally, this week we found out they stole a project we (developers and DBAs) were finishing and, long before, they presented it to the CEO as theirs without us knowing. I'm a systems analyst, and initially my group decided to store critical content, like shared passwords, inside encrypted .zip files. Unfortunately we couldn't do the same to the other hundreds of folders and files, which included the stolen project, because the zipping process would take too long for every update. We also tried an encrypted Subversion repository under SSL, but there are many dummies (~38 atm) involved in the projects that have trouble using TortoiseSVN when contributing, and very oftenly we had to fix messed up updates. Well, I think these two give the idea of what we've been trying to reach. So, is there a practical "individual" protection for our extensive data or my hope can already be euthanized? P.S.: Seriously, at the place where I live/work, political corruption gone the wildest, so denounce related options are likely impracticable. Yet both netadmins have strong "political bond" with the CEO and the President, hence their lousy behavior and our failed delation attempts.

• Wi-Fi won't automatically connect (box in Windows configuration gets unchecked)

  The checkbox that says "Use windows to configure my wireless network settings" keeps getting unchecked (Wirless Network Connection - Change advanced settings - Wireless networks tab.) How do I stop that from happening? (So the wi-fi will reconnect.) When I manually re-check the box, it automatically connects.) I have a D-Link AirPremier DWL-G550 PCI adapter. I installed the newest driver, 5.3.0.46, and that didn't solve the problem. I took the "Atheros Client Utility" (the program window says "D-Link AirPremier Client Utility" when you run it) out of the start menu, rebooted, and that didn't solve the problem. (That utility puts a signal bar similiar to the one MS Windows puts there, and it's gone now.) The D-Link client utility has an option to automatically connect to preferred networks, but it is greyed out. It is also greyed out if I install the driver and utility right off the D-Link installation CD, so the problem isn't that the utility and driver are incompatible versions. I want to use Windows to handle the connection anyway, as the D-Link utility is garbage. Windows XP SP3 w/all current updates.

• Trouble with Remote Desktop pulling through printers. Drive Redirection works, and the ports created but not the printers

  I've run out of things to look into. All the support documents have been gone through and still provide no resolution. I've checked the service permissions, (sc sdshow spooler) they all match up with other systems and what is output on the support documents. I'm nearly positive that the issue can't be permissions anyway as the software requires all users to be an administrator, so all users are a local administrator. (I haven't looked into why yet but its on the list, I was just recently brought into this team and we've put procedures in place for quick recovery.) We've applied hot fixes relating to RDS and printing, though I'm not sure which ones they were. I've combed through group policy and no where is printer redirection disabled. It's setup with all default values regarding the use and redirection of printers and a quick install of W2k8 R2 shows that it works by default. This dev install was joined to the same domain, placed in the same OU, shows the same policies applied, etc, etc, etc, The server generates all the correct redirected ports but no printers are created. It will also redirect drives without issue, this would seem to rule out the usermode service that handles redirects being broken. No events are logged related to any of the events and there are no events from the TerminalServices-Printer source. There were local printers setup. I didn't think it would mattter but as I was running out of ideas I tried deleting them all with no change. The TS was configured for the software it will be running before we checked out the redirection of printers so the other team responsible to setting up new servers wants to find a fix instead of reloading a new server. I'm not sure where or what else to look for. Any ideas?

• How do you permanently disable the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page on Firefox

  I'm going insane. Can someone please help me to COMPLETELY DISABLE the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page on Firefox. Facts: I am running Firefox 23.0 on an Ubuntu machine (downloaded and installed ubuntu today) It is a work computer and I have to use my employer's proxy While visiting Webpages/webapps like Gmail or Google brings up the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page and I have to go through the whole tedious task of selecting 'I understand the Risks' and add Exceptions, etc. etc. The fact is, I don't care about the risks. I would rather this computer melt into the ground than have to see that page ever again. I want to dance naked in untrusted pages and not give a damn about the consequences. I just never want to see that page again. Ever. For some sites (eg. wikipedia), the css doesn't load and I end up seeing them in plain text. As a result these sites are completely useless. Wasted hours trying to solve this for stackoverflow.com. These issues happen on the Firefox on my Windows XP machine as well (also using the same proxy). I don't want to export/import certificates or create exceptions for every site that shows this bloody page. I just want this page gone. I don't want Firefox to tell me what's safe and what's not. Also, my system time and date are correct. I've also tried the lies on this page too with no good results. Edit: I've also tried the whole going into the Advance-Certificates-validation setup page and unchecked 'Use the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to confirm the current validity of certificates' checkbox. Nothing happened even after restarting firefox or rebooting. I need help. Thanks.

• How can I create a macro that acts on a relative reference rather than an absolute reference to cell A1?

  I have a master rent statement in an Excel 2007 (macro enabled) spreadsheet that shows all tenants in rows with columns formed by the months. Each tenant then has a separate rent statement sheet like the one below that pulls the data through from the master rent statement and all I do then is to copy the last 4 columns to the right and add them to the right, just renaming the month labelled as ‘rent due’ with the current month and then hiding the previous last 4 columns to the left so that the statement always shows the previous month's activity and the amount due for the current month: I used a macro to speed up the creation of these statements, but then found that in some cases the result was wrong and needed major correction because the macro use absolute references i.e. its starting position was relative to cell A1 whereas some of my rent worksheets commence from a different column and in some cases from a different column and a different row. I have tried recording the macro with 'Use relative references' but when trying to use the macro it only gets part way through its operation before it stops and the message appears: Run time error '1004' Application defined or object defined error with the option to End or Debug or go to Help and then I'm stuck as I don't know how to debug and work in VBA or understand what has gone wrong. I want to record a single macro that always remains relative to the last 'Total Due' column heading (in the sample, it’s cell FF3 but on another worksheet could be cell GA26) and thus enables me regardless of where on the worksheet the rent statement is placed to add through my recorded macro a further four columns with updated dates and a repositioned 'Total Due' summary (in the sample in cells FE23 and FF23). The contents of cells FE23 and FE22 are always the same number of rows from the 'Sample Rent Statement, Service Charge and Sub Total' rows. I've searched on the web and in the help files of Excel 2007 but have been totally stumped by this, so currently I have to re-record a quantity of macros each month to cover all of the permutations of the worksheets in my Excel rent workbook, which is starting to become pointless in terms of saving time. Does someone know a solution to this problem please?!

• Print job leaves queue but document isn't printed

  I'm dealing with an HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One printer. It's connected via USB to a desktop running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. If I attempt to print something like a web page or a word document, the print job will show up in the print queue and the printer would stir. By stir, I mean, it would seem to prepare itself to print. However, the print job would then leave queue (I'm thinking the computer sees it as completed) and the printer would never actually print anything. However I went into Printers and Devices under the Windows start menu, into printer properties, and print a test page, the test page would print out successfully. I attempted to uninstall and re-install the printer drivers for the printer, but the printer would continue the same behavior afterwards. I also connected the printer to another computer and the printer will print just about anything. I also checked to make sure that the computer the printer needs to be connected to was update to date as far as the OS. The machine is fully up to date. I played with the way the computer handles printer spooling. Under the printer properties, under the "Advanced" tab, I had the print job print directly to the printer. In all these instances, the same behavior continues. I've restarted the printer spooling service. I've also gone under C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and deleted files that were sitting in the folder. I have ran SFC /scannnow and the system found no errors in the system's integrity. I had the computer and printer make a cold reboot individually. The only lead I really have going for me is that since the printer prints on other PCs, I can only assume that there is something wrong with the way the PC is configured.

• How to fix Windows 7 device removal notification loop

  Bit of an odd one this. One of our PCs is getting caught in a loop some time after being turned on, usually after a USB storage device has been attached - sometimes an iPod, sometimes a GPS. Specifically, Windows Explorer starts showing a drive icon and letter (E:, as of right now) for the System partition (the small hidden one at the start of the boot drive). Then, the icon disappears. Then it reappears again. And disappears. It does this very quickly, at what looks like maybe 50 times a second. CPU usage in this loop is also very high; averages about 66%. This machine has an i7 920 CPU, which is quad core with hyperthreading; so this usage rate works out to about 5 100% busy threads, along with whatever normal idle load is (particularly Task Manager itself). Inspecting with Process Explorer shows that the device removal notification infrastructure has gone berserk. The threads in system service processes (i.e. apart from Windows Explorer) which are using all the CPU power relate to device notification. The Disk Management MMC snap-in also fails to run when the loop starts. The only way to break the loop, it seems, is to reboot the machine. Anyone seen anything similar to this, and know of a way to fix it? Machine details: Windows 7 x64, fully patched i7 920, 12GB RAM Intel SSD 80GB (X25-M, I believe; not G2) 2TB 5.2K disk for bulk storage AMD HD 5870 Further hardware details await. I'm going to go through and update all drivers I can find.
