• Prototype and jQuery concatenation failure

  I found something strange when trying to concatenate prototype and jQuery. It seems as though when concatenated, the $ jquery reference doesn't get overwritten by prototype. I've built two test cases to single this out, and it's failing in Chrome8 and FF 3.6. Test Case 1 - Without Concatenation jQuery and Prototype are loaded separately with different script tags. jQuery is loaded first, Prototype second. Test Case 2 - With Concatenation jQuery and Prototype are concatenated into a single file, and loaded with a single script tag. jQuery is first in the script, and prototype is added second. These should act identically, but the second test is throwing errors because the $ function in prototype doesn't overwrite the $ jquery reference. Did I set these up wrong, or are browsers rendering javascript differently when it's all in the same file?

• How Do I Set XML Content-Type in Flex 3?

  Hi, I've got a Flex 3 project. Flex makes an ExternalCall to some Javascript. The Javascript is then turned into XML. But, my xml isn't parsing in IE. It works in all other browsers. I think that the problem is that I haven't set the XML's content-type and IE doesn't like that. So my code looks like: myReturn = '<myXMLReturn>' + myReturn + '</myXMLReturn>'; myReturn = '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>' + myReturn; xmlReturn = new XML(myReturn); How would I set: header('Content-type: application/xml'); in Actionscript? • Print styles: How to ensure image doesn't span a page break

  This is a problem I've had a few times, and I'm not sure how to deal with it. When writing a print stylesheet, is there a way to ensure that an image is always only on a single page. • Circular dock/menu in css or jquery

  Is it possible to have a circular menu or dock using css or jquery.? I have a set of images as the dock items that need to be displayed as a circular dock... however the number of items in the dock are not constant and may vary.... so i cannot tend to use constant values for positioning each item in a pre-defined manner. Ajax loads some images into this particular div and i need to use css or jquery to style this so that they get displayed as circular dock items. Any idea on how this can be implemented..? I would like a browser in-specific implementation, but i also welcome if some one has some solutions specific to few browsers... UPDATE I don't think i exactly want a pie menu... it easily gets messed up as the number of dock items increase. I am looking for a spiral dock. and by spiral i mean that the menu items must be in the following alignment..

  I've got a web app that I'm porting to an OS X Dashboard widget. The web app generates some data on the client side using JavaScript, and then, when the user wants to save it, sends it to a server-side script which relays the data back with the Content-disposition: attachment; HTTP header, triggering a save-file dialog in most browsers. I've tried duplicating this in the Dashboard environment. The Widget simply disappears. I don't know, but I suspect that it may be actually navigating to the unfamiliar content. So, how do I trigger a "save file dialog" -- or, failing that, use any method at all to save the data the Widget generates as a file?

• How to move to a location in a web browser component?

  I have a .NET windows form page and a WebBrowser component inside. I load a page inside the web browser using the Navigate method as in: webBrowser1.Navigate("http://www.stackoverflow.com"); The pages length is longer than the browsers height, so the vertical scroll bar appears. Now I want to move the scrollbar down to a specific position. More specifically I want to search for a specific peace of text inside the page, and scroll to that position. This behavior is implemented in the built-in "Find" function of the browser, but I can't figure out how to call the Find function from within my code, without the Find window appearing. Although I don't want the Find window to appear, if the text matches are highlighted it is welcome.

• Is it possible to maintain the url while redirecting to a classic asp page from a controller?

  While migrating a site from a classic asp to MVC, I'm having the problem that not all controllers are implemented yet. For those which are not implemented, I'd like to serve the classic asp page (say /product.asp?id=123) while maintaining the nice url /product/123. To accomplish this I implemented a dummy ProductController which returns a RedirectResult to the classic asp url. But that changes the url in the browsers navigation bar. Requirement has it, that the urls should always be a clean (mvc) one, eventhough the page has not yet been fully migrated. If this can't be done using a dummy controller, what would be an alternative option to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

• capturing click events on web-browser scrollbars

  Hi, is it possible to capture a click event on a scrollbar? I have some code where i am observing the click and mousedown events on the document. However, it seems that when I click on the scrollbar, the event is not captured. This leads me to believe that the scrollbars aren't really part of the document. (Assumption :-)) Is this a correct assumption? • Chrome vs Safari - CSS the mystery pixel

  I have an issue of the mysterious pixel in CSS. Site in question: http://www.lymphcareri.com/about/ The idea is that under the menu is a line, which gets highlighted upon hover and blends in with the line under the header. However, Safari and Chrome both interpret the CSS different in such a way, that I cannot get those lines to line up in both browsers (no pun intended). It is either on the mark, or off. Chrome shaves off one pixel on the bottom margin of the nav link, making the line appear just above. Any idea why that is?

  I'm loading an image in an iframe and then (once the iframe is loaded) loading the image on the page. But most browsers seem to be loading the image twice. Why isn't the img tag being loading from the cache? • Hiding text under an image for SEO purposes

  I am going to use a large image on my page with a bunch of text on it. The reason I am including body text on an image is because the text will be rotated, and there currently isn't any GREAT solution for rotating text seamlessly across all browsers. On this image, there is a lot of text, and I want it to be indexed by search engines. (but its a picture so it's content won't be indexed, obviously) If I was to include a div with all the text html and set the css to display:none, would Google still index the content that is hidden under the picture? Are their any other solid solutions here?

  Hello to all. I need to implement parent page redirection from iframe. I know that it is impossible to do in different domains due to browsers security. However I found that links have target attribute and tried to use it in the following way: <a href="http://google.com" target="_top" id="testParentRedirect">someLink</a> It works fine if I click this link manually, but I couldn't find cross-browser solution to simulate it using javascript. document.getElementById('testParentRedirect').click(); This works fine in IE, however Firefox and Safary don't know click function :). I tried to work with jquery, but for some reason they don't simulate click event for links. (see following post) I couldn't find any appropriate solution on stackoverflow. Maybe someone could help me in it. I will appreciate it. :)

• html5media & flowplayer wmode issues...

  I'm working on our new homepage and need to implement a solution that will run a video across iphone/ipad and the standard web browsers. I found a pretty decent solution with html5media - http://code.google.com/p/html5media/ but ran across an issue with a jquery dropdown falling behind the the swf object (this only happens on FF & IE - works fine on Safari & Chrome because it's loading mp4 instead of a swf object). I know the issue is the wmode setting but can not for the life of me figure out where to set it in the html5media (http://html5media.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/html5media.min.js). I'm hoping someone can help me or possibly give me a better solution of implementing the video. • How can I determine img width/height of dynamically loaded images in IE?

  My markup is a simple div element with id 'load'. Using jQuery I then load a list of image elements into this div: $('#load').load('images.html', { }, function() { $(this).onImagesLoad({ selectorCallback: function() { ....do something.... } }); }); where images.html is a list like this: <img src='1.jpg' caption='img 1'> <img src='2.jpg' caption='img 2'> ... To ensure that all images are loaded completely, I use the onImagesLoad plugin. This, so far, works just fine on all browsers. However, on IE8 (and I assume other versions of IE also) when I then iterate over the img elements, I am unable to determine the width/height of the images loaded. The image.context.naturalWidth and naturalHeight attributes don't seem to work. How do I get a hold of the images' dimension? Thanks heaps :)

On webkit, the browser renders the first paragraph correctly but fails back to browser default settings on the last two. It works perfectly on normal applications (for example, Notepad, browsers, etc.), but not on games (fullscreen or windowed mode). • Invisible Delimiter for Strings in HTML

  I need a way to identify certain strings in HTML markup. I know what the strings are, but it is possible that they could be substrings of other strings in the document. To find them, I output a special delimiter character (currently using \032). On page load, we go through the HTML and record the location of the strings, and remove the delimiter. Unfortunately, most browsers show the delimiter character until we can find and remove them all. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Is there a character or string that will be preserved in the HTML content (so a comment wont work) but wont be visible to the user? It also needs to be something that is fairly unlikely to appear next to a string, so something like &nbsp; wouldn't work either. EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to mention that the strings will be in attributes, so any sort of tag wont work.

• Employer wants direct, no-hack, ie6 support for CSS. Should I talk him out of it?

  I'm currently employed by a website Designer, he gets the clients and sends me a mockup in a fireworks file, and I send him the html/css/js. The problem is that he wants direct ie6 compatibility for every site I build. That is, no conditional ie6 hack, no separate style sheets. A lot of my html has suffered because of it. I just started writing html with him last summer, he took me in as an intern and taught me everything about it. Since then I built 4 web pages, but I haven't yet made anything I'm really proud of. Should I be trying harder to create stellar code beside my limitations or should I set him down and explain that his demands are killing the code for modern browsers?

• Catching "NullPointerExceptions" in JavaScript

  I'm writing quite a bit of code in Prototype.js which returns null if a DOM-id wasn't found. $("someId").show(); If someId doesn't exist, a method will be called on null, which halts the entire program, in effect disabling all JS effects after the error. I could just check for null before executing such a statement, but this is getting tiring. I would like to catch an exception but I'm not sure which one its is. MDC lists the following ECMA Script error types: * Error * EvalError * RangeError * ReferenceError * SyntaxError * TypeError * URIError * DOMException * EventException * RangeException Also, do browsers have a unified way of dealing with a method call on null?

• Javascript hasOwnProperty does not work under Google Chrome

I believe that it has something to do with "commands.hasOwnProperty(command)" that is preventing it from working properly. I am using JQuery the javascript library to build the website, and I need to know how to solve this problem, or an alternative.

• Iframe auto-height not working when page changes in IE

In other browsers the iframe gets resized, because the onload event fires each time. I'm using IE8 but the outer page is setting it to IE7 compatibility mode. Is there a workaround for IE?

I have a fixed div like this: #fixed { position: fixed; top: 0px; left: 0px; z-index: 9998; width: 100%; height: 40px; } Inside this div I want to place another div that has a height that is higher than its holder (higher than 40px). So I put a relative or an absolute div inside it and it works splendid in all browsers except IE, at least IE8. But in IE8 the child div gets cut because of the height of 40px specified for it's holder. Is there any workaround to this problem? I'm starting to get gray hairs..
