  • Shark was unable to find symbol information for this address range - iPhone

    - by Elliot
I'm trying to use Shark to determine which method(s) are taking the most time in my iPhone app. After sampling, I get this: Clicking the "!" button yields: Shark was unable to find symbol information for this address range. Typically this happens because the application was compiled without symbols or they have been subsequently stripped away. In Xcode, make sure the "Generate Debug Symbols" checkbox is selected (passes the -g flag to the compiler). Note that this does not affect code optimization, and does not typically alter performance significantly. However, the extra symbol information does consume significantly more space and may bloat the size of the executable. But I AM using the Debug option, and I am running on my Device. And Generate Debug Symbols IS checked. So what's wrong?

  • using Control.tabs for prototype.js in Rails

    - by Elliot
Hey everyone, I've been trying to use http://livepipe.net/control/tabs to get some javascript tabs up and running on my rails up. I'm really just trying to figure out how to install this... and I don't see how I'm running into any issues at all. Here are the steps I've taken: put tabs.js in my scripts folder made sure the layout is including all javascript files then I copied in the code for example 1, as well as the CSS from the page's style sheet. I don't get an error, but it just doesn't work. Both tabs are displayed... Any ideas?

  • Generate CSV file from rails

    - by Elliot
I've been reading similar questions, but many of the answers are outdated or not clear enough for me. I'd like to be able to just do something like (in a controller action): respond_to do |format| format.html format.csv end I know I'd then need a view such as action.csv.erb So my questions are: 1) What do I need to configure in rails to allow this to happen in general. 2) How should I setup the CSV view to display some basic fields from a model?

  • How would I create a random number?

    - by Elliot Bonneville
How would I create a random number using C++? I've heard that one should use the time as a seed, but I'm not sure how to do that with the correct syntax. How would I do this? One more thing - how would I limit the random number to a particular range? I'm simulating a dice roll and getting numbers in the millions...

  • Should I release NSString before assigning a new value to it?

    - by Elliot Chen
Hi, Please give me some suggestions about how to change a NSString variable. At my class, I set a member var: NSString *m_movieName; ... @property(nonatomic, retain) NSString *m_movieName; At viewDidLoad method, I assign a default name to this var: -(void)viewDidLoad{ NSString *s1 = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"Forrest Gump"]; self.m_movieName = s1; ... [s1 release]; [super viewDidLoad] } At some function, I want to give a new name to this var, so I did like: -(void)SomeFunc{ NSString *s2 = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"Brave Heart"]; //[self.movieName release]; // ??????? Should perform here? self.m_moiveName = s2; [s2 release]; } I know, NSString* var is just a pointer to an allocated memory block, and 'assign' operation will increment this memory block's using count. For my situation, should I release m_movieName before assigning a value to it? If I do not release it (via [self.movieName release]), when and where will the previous block be released? Thanks for your help very much!

  • Equivalent of Bloch's Effective Java for C#

    - by Elliot Vargas
I've jumped into the C# bandwagon and was wondering if there's an equivalent of Joshua Bloch's Effective Java for the C# world. I've already being able to apply some Java knowledge to C# given their similarity but I'm interested in knowledge to make the most effective use of C# specific features. For example, Generics are not implemented equally in Java and C#, so it's not clear to me if the Java Generic "techniques" will work in C# as well. I'm mostly interested in C# 3.0. That is (of course) unless you guys think I would benefit for looking into versions 1 and 2 features.

  • Have loaded a php variable into flash but cant apply it in a function...

    - by Paul Elliot
hi I have created an actionscript function which stops an animation on a specific frame which works fine. I have then loaded in a php file with a variable which will contain the number for the frame i want the animation to stop on. This has loaded in fine and i have loaded it in a function. what i cant seem to do is to get the variable into the function which tells the animation to stop playing. here is my code: //load variables varReceiver = new LoadVars(); // create an object to store the variables varReceiver.load("http://playground.nsdesign6.net/percentage/external.php"); //load variables //function1 varReceiver.onLoad = function() { //value is the var that is created. var paul = this.percentage; } //function1 //function2 this.onEnterFrame = function() { if(this._currentframe==(percentage)) { this.stop(); this.onEnterFrame = undefined; } } play(); //function2 cheers paul

  • What guidelines should be followed when using an unstable/testing/stable branching scheme?

    - by Elliot
My team is currently using feature branches while doing development. For each user story in our sprint, we create a branch and work it in isolation. Hence, according to Martin Fowler, we practice Continuous Building, not Continuous Integration. I am interested in promoting an unstable/testing/stable scheme, similar to that of Debian, so that code is promoted from unstable = testing = stable. Our definition of done, I'd recommend, is when unit tests pass (TDD always), minimal documentation is complete, automated functional tests pass, and feature has been demo'd and accepted by PO. Once accepted by the PO, the story will be merged into the testing branch. Our test developers spend most of their time in this branch banging on the software and continuously running our automated tests. This scares me, however, because commits from another incomplete story may now make it into the testing branch. Perhaps I'm missing something because this seems like an undesired consequence. So, if moving to a code promotion strategy to solve our problems with feature branches, what strategy/guidelines do you recommend? Thanks.

  • Error Converting PIL B&W images to Numpy Arrays

    - by Elliot
I am getting weird errors when I try to convert a black and white PIL image to a numpy array. An example of the code I am working with is below. if image.mode != '1': image = image.convert('1') #convert to B&W data = np.array(image) #convert data to a numpy array n_lines = data.shape[0] #number of raster passes line_range = range(data.shape[1]) for l in range(n_lines): # process one horizontal line of the image line = data[l] for n in line_range: if line[n] == 1: write_line_to(xl, z+scale*n, speed) #conversion to other program code elif line[n] == 0: run_to(xl, z+scale*n) #conversion to other program code I have tried this using both array and asarray for the conversion, and gotten different errors. If I use array, then the data I get out is nothing like what I put in. It looks like several very shrunken partial images side by side, with the remainder of the image space filled in in black. If I use asarray, then the entirety of python crashes during the raster step (on a random line). If I work with a greyscale image ('L'), then neither of these errors occurs for either array or asarray. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Is there something odd about the way PIL encodes B&W images, or something special I need to pass numpy to make it convert properly?

  • Working with strings in C++

    - by Elliot Bonneville
Hi. I'm working with strings in C++. I recently came across a problem when entering strings. I'm using cin >> string; to get my string as user input. When the user enters a space into the string, the next input is automatically filled out with the remaining letters, or sometimes left blank. As the next input string is often an integer, this will result in an unpleasant bug. What's a good fix for this?

  • Sorting based on existing elements in xslt

    - by Teelo
Hi , I want to sort in xslt based on existing set of pattern . Let me explain with the code: <Types> <Type> <Names> <Name>Ryan</Name> </Names> <Address>2344</Address> </Type> <Type> <Names> </Name>Timber</Name> </Names> <Address>1234</Address> </Type> <Type> <Names> </Name>Bryan</Name> </Names> <Address>34</Address> </Type> </Types> Right now I m just calling it and getting it like (all hyperlinks) Ryan Timber Bryan Now I don't want sorting on name but I have existing pattern how I want it to get displayed.Like Timber Bryan Ryan (Also I don't want to lose the url attached to my names earlier while doing this) I was thinking of putting earlier value in some array and sort based on the other array where I will store my existing pattern. But I am not sure how to achieve that.. My xslt looks like this now(there can be duplicate names also) <xsl:for-each select="/Types/Type/Names/Name/text()[generate-id()=generate-id(key('Name',.)[1])]"> <xsl:call-template name="typename"> </xsl:call-template> </xsl:for-each> <xsl:template name="typename"> <li> <a href="somelogicforurl"> <xsl:value-of select="."/> </a> </li> </xsl:template> I am using xsl 1.0

  • Safari does not show images, but FireFox does

    - by Elliot
I have a website that I am working on: http://keramed.com in FireFox on my Mac the image on the main page shows up. (The Endoshield DSEK Graft Injector) Now check in Safari and the image does not show up. I have tried taking the original .PSD and saving it as a .jpg or .png and it does not matter. I have commented out all stylesheets and this still does not solve it. The rest of my images are showing up, just not thing one. I just dont understand I am stumped. EDIT: Photoshop says it is an RGB 8-bit image.

  • Is it possible for a function called from within an object to have access to that object's scope?

    - by Elliot Bonneville
I can't think of a way to explain what I'm after more than I've done in the title, so I'll repeat it. Is it possible for an anonymous function called from within an object to have access to that object's scope? The following code block should explain what I'm trying to do better than I can: function myObj(testFunc) { this.testFunc = testFunc; this.Foo = function Foo(test) { this.test = test; this.saySomething = function(text) { alert(text); }; }; var Foo = this.Foo; this.testFunc.apply(this); } var test = new myObj(function() { var test = new Foo(); test.saySomething("Hello world"); }); When I run this, I get an error: "Foo is not defined." How do I ensure that Foo will be defined when I call the anonymous function? Here's a jsFiddle for further experimentation. Edit: I am aware of the fact that adding the line var Foo = this.Foo; to the anonymous function I pass in to my instance of myObj will make this work. However, I'd like to avoid having to expose the variable inside the anonymous function--do I have any other options?.

    - by Elliot
Hey Everyone, so I've watched http://railscasts.com/episodes/43-ajax-with-rjs but I have a question: In my view I have the following: <div id="testly"> <%= render :partial => "test" %> </div> This works. But its not working... Would love any suggestions!

  • What is the proper location for a sqlite3 database file?

    - by Elliot Chen
Hi, Everyone: I'm using a sqlite3 database to store app's data. Instead of building a database within program, I introduced an existing db file: 'abc.sqlite' into my project and put it under my 'Resources' folder. So, I think this db file should be inside of 'bundle', so at my init function, I used following statement to read it out: NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"abc" ofType:"sqlite"]; if(sqlite3_open([path UTF8String], &database) != SQLITE_OK) ... It's ok that this db can be opened and data can be retrieved from it. BUT, someone told me that it's better to copy this db file into user folder: such as 'Document'. So, my question is: is it ok to use this db from main bundle directly or copy it to user folder then use that copy. Which is better? Thank you very much!

  • Relation/Sort not working in rails controller?

    - by Elliot
I have the following relation in my rails app: genre - has many - authors authors - belong to genre and has many books books - belongs to authors and belongs to users (users can add books to the db) in my controller I have: @books=current_user.books(:include => [:author => :genre], :order => 'created_at DESC') While I am able to use the @books variable in my views - nothing is done correctly (i.e. its not showing me only books added by that user, and its not descending by created_at)... any ideas? -- Also I'm using clearance for the user auth, so current_user without the @ in the controller seems to work fine Actually, I think the relation is working, only the sort might not be working...

  • What's the proper way to use sqlite on the iPhone?

    - by Elliot Chen
Hi, Experts: Can you please give some suggestions on sqlite using on the iPhone? Within my application, I use a sqlite DB to store all local data. Two methods can be used to retrieve those data during running time. 1, Load all the data into memory at initialization stage. (More memory used, less DB open/close operation needed) 2, Read corresponding records when necessary, free the occupied memory after using. (Good habit for memory using, but much DB open/close operations needs). I prefer to use method 2, but not sure whether too many DB opening/closing operations could affect app's efficiency. Or do you think I can 'upgrade' method 2 by opening DB when app launches and closing DB when app quits? Thanks for your suggestions very much!

  • Resetting a partial using RJS, and passing an instance variable?

    - by Elliot
    Hey guys here is my code (roughly): books.html.erb <% @books.each do |book| %> <% @bookid = book.id %> <div id="enter_stuff"> <%= render "input", :bookid => @bookid %> </div> <%end%> _input.html.erb <% @book = Book.find_by_id(@bookid) %> <strong>your book is: <%=h @book.name %></strong> create.rjs page.replace_html :enter_stuff, :partial => 'input2', :object => @bookid Only create.js doesn't seem to work though, if instead of passing the partial I passed "..." it does work, so I know its that there are instance variables in the partial that aren't being reset. Any ideas?

  • Using the .where method in Rails3

    - by Elliot
Hey Guys, I've just started using the .where method, and I'm a little bit confused about how to fully utilize it. I'd like to do something like: @books = Book.where(:author_id => 1 || 2) clearly I know that doesn't work, but I'm trying to demonstrate that I want some extra logic here. some "or" "and" "does not equal" etc. Any ideas for where I can research this? I was looking in the rails API but I didnt see anything that was that helpful. Thanks!

  • Making Noise with Python

    - by Elliot
I am trying to get python to make noise when certain things happen. Preferably, i would like to play music of some kind, however some kind of distinctive beeping would be sufficient, like an electronic timer going off. I have thus far only been able to make the system speaker chime using pywin32's Beep, however this simply does not have the volume for my application. Any ideas on how I can do this?
