• Java and what to do with it

  I've been browsing through several websites and several topics on this website. Now I'm just a starting programmer and I want to make a good decision. From what I understand is that Java is used alot for server stuff, and web applets but not really for computer applications running on a client, it's also used for Android programming and several other mobiles. I'm really interested in Android programming, I really love to program for mobile devices, in this case Android because I really think it has a lot of potential and I don't like the iPhone. If I want to program on Android I have to learn Java (aside from Mono). but if my decision changes over the next couple of years I don't think Java is the right language to get a job that programs computer applications. I think I get a job where I have to program server stuff, rather than computer applications. That's why I think C# is a good choice. I can program for Windows Phone 7 (I hope that will get big). and I have the feeling C# is more widely used for computer applications. so I think C# is more versatile looking at Mobile programming and computer programming. Or am I totally wrong thinking this?

• Ubuntu on Samsung NP700Z5B - no Grub

  I just bought a Samsung NP700Z5B laptop. Gorgeous machine and great performance! I do 2 things when I get a new laptop: Format the HD and install Winblows from a CD to ditch the bloatware Install some variant of Linux on it (lately Ubuntu) Step 1 worked fine (until earlier today), but I haven't been able to install Ubuntu on it for the past 3 days! I've tried Mint12, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.04. The live CD and the installations all run fine and report no problems, but when I reboot grub is nowhere to be found! The system goes directly to Winblows! I've tried booting from the liveCD and re-installing grub via the chroot and purge & reinstall methods (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) and neither makes a difference. I've also tried copying the boot sector: dd if=/dev/sda of=linux.bin bs=512 count=1 and putting it on c: then setting bcdedit to add the entry to the Windows bootloader with no results. Earlier today I decided to try and set my boot partition as an EFI boot partition ... bad choice, now I don't even have the Winblows boot loader. I've officially ran out of ideas. Tried calling Samsung, but they're closed (they'd probably say something stupid along the lines of "Samsung recommends Windows 7" ... I've had Dell say that to me). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Update 1 Tried re-installing 12.04 and now I get the screen continously turning off and back on, but still no sign of booting ... it has been doing it for 15 mins so far (I set the boot partition type to ext2 instead of ext4) Update 2 Well ... this just gets better and better. I inserted the installation USB key to reboot it and the flickering stopped for about a minute (remained on) then it started turning off and on again

• How to Structure a Trinary state in DB and Application

  How should I structure, in the DB especially, but also in the application, a trinary state? For instance, I have user feedback records which need to be reviewed before they are presented to the general public. This means a feedback reviewer must see the unreviewed feedback, then approve or reject them. I can think of a couple ways to represent this: Two boolean flags: Seen/Unseen and Approved/Rejected. This is the simplest and probably the smallest database solution (presumably boolean fields are simple bits). The downside is that there are really only three states I care about (unseen/approved/rejected) and this creates four states, including one I don't care about (a record which is seen but not approved or rejected is essentially unseen). String column in the DB with constants/enum in application. Using Rating::APPROVED_STATE within the application and letting it equal whatever it wants in the DB. This is a larger column in the db and I'm concerned about doing string comparisons whenever I need these records. Perhaps mitigatable with an index? Single boolean column, but allow nulls. A true is approved, a false is rejected. A null is unseen. Not sure the pros/cons of this solution. What are the rules I should use to guide my choice? I'm already thinking in terms of DB size and the cost of finding records based on state, as well as the readability of code the ends up using this structure.

• Generic rule parser for RPG board game rules - how to do it?

  I want to build a generic rule parser for pen and paper style RPG systems. A rule can involve usually 1 to N entities 1 to N roles of a dice and calculating values based on multiple attributes of an entity. For example: Player has STR 18, his currently equipped weapon gives him a bonus of +1 STR but a malus of DEX -1. He attacks a monster entity and the game logic now is required to run a set of rules or actions: Player rolls the dice, if he gets for example 8 or more (base attack value he needs to pass is one of his base attributes!) his attack is successfully. The monster then rolls the dice to calculate if the attack goes through it's armor. If yes the damage is taken if not the attack was blocked. Besides simple math rules can also have constraints like applying only to a certain class of user (warrior vs wizzard for example) or any other attribute. So this is not just limited to mathematical operations. If you're familiar with RPG systems like Dungeon and Dragons you'll know what I'm up to. My issue is now that I have no clue how to exactly build this the best possible way. I want people to be able to set up any kind of rule and later simply do an action like selecting a player and a monster and run an action (set of rules like an attack). I'm asking less for help with the database side of things but more about how to come up with a structure and a parser for it to keep my rules flexible. The language of choice for this is php by the way.

• Is the way I'm implementing my genetic algorithm right?

  In my graduation project, I am asked to use a genetic algorithm (any variation of it can be chosen) to generate valid timetables. What I did was make a simple program that generates unique sequences representing genes, the sequence is described below: (sorry if it's mathematically incorrect) The only variable in the sequence is the room element, so basically the program takes a tree that goes like this: [Course] -(contains)-> [Units] -(contains)-> [Offerings] -(contains)-> [Instructors] -(contains)-> [Rooms] Each course can have n units (duplicates). Each unit can have n offerings (lectures,lab session, excercises,...). Each offering has only 1 instructor. Each instructor (or the whole lecture composed from the four elements of the sequence) has multiple rooms. When a timetable is initialized, one of these sequences that differ in rooms will be taken into the timetable, so the difference in genes (sequences) of each timetable will be just the rooms random choice and the difference between chromosomes (timetables) will be time placements of these genes (sequences). My question is, before I proceed in implementing what I described, is it valid? Is the representation used here for chromosomes a permutation representation?

• How to choose how to store data?

Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. - Chinese Proverb I could ask what kind of data storage I should use for my actual project, but I want to learn to fish, so I don't need to ask for a fish each time I begin a new project. So, until I used two methods to store data on my non-game project: XML files, and relational databases. I know that there is also other kind of database, of the NoSQL kind. However I wouldn't know if there is more choice available to me, or how to choose in the first place, aside arbitrary picking one. So the question is the following: How should I choose the kind of data storage for a game project? And I would be interested on the following criterion when choosing: The size of the project. The platform targeted by the game. The complexity of the data structure. Added Portability of data amongst many project. Added How often should the data be accessed Added Multiple type of data for a same application Any other point you think is of interest when deciding what to use. EDIT I know about Would it be better to use XML/JSON/Text or a database to store game content?, but thought it didn't address exactly my point. Now if I am wrong, I would gladely be shown the error in my ways.

• Dual booted Windows 7 freezes after login screen

  First-time Linux user, using a Packard Bell Easy Note TS laptop. My problem arose after I dual boot installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 via WUBI. I backed up all my data, and reinstalled Windows from factory settings on the recovery partition. When I first tried to install Ubuntu I mistakenly closed the lid at the start of the installation, stopping it. After that I rebooted, and my second installation attempt went without a hitch. Ubuntu works perfectly, the data on the partitions seem to be fine. My problem is I can't log back in to Windows 7. After selecting it in GRUB, and then in the Windows 7/ WUBI choice on boot, it loads up perfectly til the user log in screen. After the password is inputted, it stalls on the "Welcome" busy screen. This happens in Safe mode as well. Startup repair can't find a problem and neither can CHKDSK. System restore and Last known good config have no effect either. If anyone could help me out, I'd be real grateful. edit in response to the question below, since I don't know how to comment: Windows was installed first and its partitions are the first on the list. Should I move the windows partitions to after the Linux ones on the disk? Thanks for your help.

• What does SVN do better than git?

  No question that the majority of debates over programmer tools distill to either personal choice (by the user) or design emphasis, i.e., optimizing design according to particular uses cases (by the tool builder). Text Editors are probably the most prominent example--a coder who works on a Windows at work and codes in Haskell on the Mac at home, values cross-platform and compiler integration and so chooses Emacs over Textmate, etc. It's less common that a newly introduced technology is genuinely, demonstrably superior to the extant options. I wonder if this is in fact the case with version-control systems, in particular, centralized VCS (CVS, SVN) versus distributed VCS (git, hg)? I used SVN for about five years, and SVN is currently used where I work. A little less than three years ago, I switched to git (and gitHub) for all of my personal projects. I can think of a number of advantages of git over subversion (and which for the most part abstract to advantages of distributed over centralized VCS), but I cannot think of one contra example--some task (that's relevant and arises in a programmers usual workflow) that subversion does better than git. The only conclusion I have drawn from this is that I don't have any data--not that git is better, etc. My guess is that such counter-examples exist, hence this question.

• Customer Loyalty vs. Customer Engagement: Who Cares?

  Have you read the recent Forbes OracleVoice blog titled Customer Loyalty is Dead. Long Live Engagement!? If you haven’t, take a look. This article prompted lots of conversation in the social realm. Many who read the article voiced their reactions to the headline and now I’m jumping in to add my view. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Customer loyalty is still key. It’s the effect and engagement is the cause. We at least know that to be true for our customers. We are in an age where customers are demanding to be heard. We need them to be actively involved – or engaged – as well. Greater levels of customer engagement, properly targeted, positively correlate with satisfaction. Our data has shown us this over and over. Satisfied customers are more loyal and more willing to vocalize their satisfaction through referencing, and are more likely to purchase again, all of which in turn drives incremental revenue – from the customer doing the referencing AND the customer on the receiving end of that reference. Turning this around completely, if we begin to see the level of a customer’s engagement start to wane, this is an indicator that their satisfaction, loyalty, and future revenue are likely at risk. At Oracle, we’ve put in place many programs to target, encourage, and then track engagement, allowing us to measure engagement as a determinant of loyalty. Some of these programs include our Key Accounts, solution design and architectural, Executive Sponsorship, as well as executive advisory boards. Specific programs allow us to engage specific contacts within specific customer organizations (based on role) and then systematically track their engagement activities over time, along side of tracking customer satisfaction, loyalty, referenceability, and incremental revenue contribution. • Consultations with ATG Development at OpenWorld 2014

  Our OpenWorld 2014 San Francisco conference is about six weeks away.  We have a great lineup of sessions this year.  Our EBS Applications Technology track sessions are listed here, and we'll have a more-detailed article about those soon. One of the advantages of attending OpenWorld is that you can meet face-to-face with senior staff in ATG Development.  You can use these meetings to discusss your questions, requirements, plans, and deployment architectures with us. There are several options for doing this: At general sessions: collar the speaker of your choice after his or her presentation. • Game crash/Screen freeze recovery (without shell or reboot)

  I am an old Windows PC gamer, now converted into Ubuntu (Linux) lover. I am even going so far as to attempt to replace all my games in a Windows dual-boot with Wine and it is going well. However... Even if Linux is less prone to crashing, games, especially the windows ones (but also a few native) can crash. My problem is when this is in full screen and the computer becomes non-responsive. In Windows you can solve this with ctrl+alt+delete, but Ubuntu lacks this feature and my only choice is a reboot. Is there any Ubuntu version of this feature? Of course excepting the ctrl+alt+F1, find and kill process method. It is fine if you know how to do it, but too slow and difficult for the typical gamer. I believe strongly in Ubuntu as the future gaming platform in one form or another. If this feature does not exist, then the Ubuntu team should address this as fast as possible, since it is critical for all old Windows gamers. Thank you for your time. Asavar Tzeth (Alias)

• Am I missing something about these considerations about Leaderboard's database's schema?

  I just finished to develop a mobile game, now I want to implement an online leaerboard using mysql. I'm wondering about the database's schema, I thought about some possibilities: (I didn't got in detail with syntax because my question is just about the logic of it) Name: string; Score: integer I thought to ask the name just the first time. If, in the future, you will modify that, it will call just an update to the name associated with your id. Leaderboard(ID, Name, Score) ID: integer autoincrement, PrimaryKey With this kind of idea maybe the db will grow fast because if you choose everytime a different name for the score, it will add a new entry. Leaderboard(PhoneId, Name, Score) Here PhoneId will be the unique identifier of the phone, PrimaryKey. A con of this choice is that if you want to play with your friends' phone, you can't put a different name for the score. Leaderboard(Name, Score) Here Name is PrimaryKey. With that, if you enter a name that already exists, you will be prompted to choose another one. Do you agree with this considerations? What will you do? Am I missing something?

One of them is a natural born programming talent, he has been programming since he was 14 year old and he has been programming all sorts of things by him self, 3d renders,games,his own frameworks, he is really good at algorithms and problem solving. He is now about 25 years old and is looking for a job after some unchallenged years of college the only experience he has is working on his own/university stuff and some open source project. This guy spends all his free time programming and has several pet projects at home. The other person is a 37 year old career programmer. He has been programming since he graduated from university at the age of 26 and have been working since then. He did not have an interest in programming before university. During his studies he discovered that programming was fun and challenging but it never was a "passion". During his career he mainly worked with "enterprise" platforms such as .net or javaEE. He mainly have done database business applications and thus is lacking skills of the young talent like abstract problem solving or algorithms. But he know the tools he has been using during the years and is reliable and almost always makes his boss happy. He keeps him self updated in the platform and tools he has and is using. But outside the office walls he don't touch any code at all. Witch one would you hire? Would you favor one of them in certain projects? Do you think that if the young talent learns his tools he will be a better programmer than the older one? Would your decision be different if both of them where lacking a degree? or if only one of them was lacking a degree be the old and experienced or the young genius.

  I encountered the R Language recently with O'Reilly books and while from the context I knew it was a language for dealing with statistics, doing a web search for the support web site was futile. However I have now located the web site and it is at http://www.r-project.org/R is a free language available for a number of platforms including windows. CRAN mirrors are available at a number of locations worldwide.Here is the official description:"R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, ...) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity. One of R's strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed. • How can find out the device Id of my unmounted DVD?

  When I put a DVD into the DVD drive, it appears in Nautilus Places, but is not automatically mounted. (this is by personal choice). In this unmounted state, mount (of course) reports nothing, and likewise for df.. but Nautilus is aware of the DVD hardware unit and has read the Label; which it shows in Places So it seems to me that Nautilus has already accessed the DVD devices (Did it temporarily mount it?)... The main point of my question was to determine how to find the device Id of an unmounted device .. but as I've been writing this, I now think it may not be as simple as that... This issue came up because I wanted to test this command cat iso-pieces.* | growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/dev/stdin, but then realized that I didn't know how to get my DVD's device Id. ... and does the above command requires a mounted device, or does it write directly to the device? ... as you can see, I'm a bit vague about devices :) Come to think of it maybe Nautalus read the DVD device directly, because when all is said and done, something has to read/write directly to it. info growisofs says: Under Linux it will most likely be an ide-scsi device such as "/dev/scd0 How can I find this Id via a script?

• Why have we got so many Linux distributions? [closed]

  Pointed to from an answer to another question, I came across this graphic, and I'm shocked how many linux distributions currently exist. However, it seems that most of these distributions are forks of already popular distributions with minimal changes, usually limited to themes, wallpapers and buttons. It would still seem easier to create a sub-distribution with the required changes, such as XUbuntu with XFCE4, KUbuntu with KDE4, Fluxbuntu with Fluxbox, etc. In my mind there are a number of problems with having so many distributions - perhaps less security/stability due to smaller group of developers, and also the confusingly vast range of choice for newcomers to Linux. Some reasons that developers might decide to fork are: Specializing on a particular topic (work-related topic - i.e. for a Hospital, etc) An exceptional architecture, that requires a special set of software Use of non-FOSS, proprietary technology, and such So what other reasons are there that have caused so many people decided to create their own distributions? What are the thought processes that have led to this? And are these "valid" reasons - do we need so many distributions? If you can back your experiences up with references that would be great.

• Facebook - Isn't this a big vulnerability risk for users? (After Password Change)

  I would like to know you opinions as programmers / developers. When I changed my Facebook password yesterday, by mistake I entered the old one and got this: Am I missing something here or this is a big potencial risk for users. In my opinion this is a problem BECAUSE it is FaceBook and is used by, well, everyone and the latest statistics show that 76.3% of the users are idiots [source:me], that is more that 3/4!! All kidding aside: Isn't this useful information for an attacker? It reveals private information about the user! It could help the attacker gain access to another site in which the user used the same password Granted, you should't use use the same password twice (but remember: 76.3%!!!) Doesn't this simply increase the surface area for attackers? It increases the chances of getting useful information at least. In a site like Facebook 1st choice for hackers and (bad) people interested in valued personal information shouldn't anything increasing the chance of a vulnerability be removed? Am I missing something? Am I being paranoid? Will 76.3% of the accounts will be hacked after this post? Thanks in advance!! And if there was no MacOS, you my dear friend would have to choose between Linux or Windows ME. See! Choice is good. Not only is it good for the consumer, it is good for us techies, us engineers.
