• Eclipse (Aptana) Typing Lag

  Hello SO, I've been using Aptana for some time now, and as of recent I've been dealing with files that are really, really big (500+ lines of code, which is huge for me, being a novice developer). Whenever I deal with smaller files, I get that weird sensation that I'm "in front of" what's typing, but now I'm quite sure of it--there is a significant lag between when I type something and when I see the text appear on screen. I don't have this issue with Dreamweaver CS3, so I know my computer has the capability to edit these files without this happening, but Eclipse still lags. I also don't see when something is being deleted if I hold down backspace, I see the first few characters get deleted, but then everything "hangs." Once I release the backspace key, the characters that would've been shown deleting instantly vanish all at once. The same thing happens with the forward delete key. I'm beginning to think this is an issue with Java, since I have the same feeling that everything is slightly "behind me" when I'm using -any- Java application. The computer is an intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Prescott, with 2GB's of DDR400 RAM and a Radeon HD3650 graphics card. If anyone knows how to fix this lagging issue, I'm all ears (eyes?); if anyone can recommend a different IDE with capabilities similar to Aptana (I do Python, HTML, CSS and JS; I use Git for SCM), I'd be glad to give it a try. • getting proxies of the correct type in nhibernate

  I have a problem with uninitialized proxies in nhibernate The Domain Model Let's say I have two parallel class hierarchies: Animal, Dog, Cat and AnimalOwner, DogOwner, CatOwner where Dog and Cat both inherit from Animal and DogOwner and CatOwner both inherit from AnimalOwner. AnimalOwner has a reference of type Animal called OwnedAnimal. Here are the classes in the example: public abstract class Animal { // some properties } public class Dog : Animal { // some more properties } public class Cat : Animal { // some more properties } public class AnimalOwner { public virtual Animal OwnedAnimal {get;set;} // more properties... } public class DogOwner : AnimalOwner { // even more properties } public class CatOwner : AnimalOwner { // even more properties } The classes have proper nhibernate mapping, all properties are persistent and everything that can be lazy loaded is lazy loaded. The application business logic only let you to set a Dog in a DogOwner and a Cat in a CatOwner. The Problem I have code like this: public void ProcessDogOwner(DogOwner owner) { Dog dog = (Dog)owner.OwnedAnimal; .... } This method can be called by many diffrent methods, in most cases the dog is already in memory and everything is ok, but rarely the dog isn't already in memory - in this case I get an nhibernate "uninitialized proxy" but the cast throws an exception because nhibernate genrates a proxy for Animal and not for Dog. I understand that this is how nhibernate works, but I need to know the type without loading the object - or, more correctly I need the uninitialized proxy to be a proxy of Cat or Dog and not a proxy of Animal. Constraints I can't change the domain model, the model is handed to me by another department, I tried to get them to change the model and failed. The actual model is much more complicated then the example and the classes have many references between them, using eager loading or adding joins to the queries is out of the question for performance reasons. I have full control of the source code, the hbm mapping and the database schema and I can change them any way I want (as long as I don't change the relationships between the model classes). I have many methods like the one in the example and I don't want to modify all of them. Thanks, Nir

• Is NSPasteboard thread-safe?

  Is it safe to write data to an NSPasteboard object from a background thread? I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere. I think the assumption is that the data will be written to the pasteboard before the drag begins. Background: I have an application that is fetching data from Evernote. When the application first loads, it gets the meta data for each note, but not the note content. The note stubs are then listed in an outline view. When the user starts to drag a note, the notes are passed to the background thread that handles getting the note content from Evernote. Having the main thread block until the data is gotten results in a significant delay and a poor user experience, so I have the [outlineView:writeItems:toPasteboard:] function return YES while the background thread processes the data and invokes the main thread to write the data to the pasteboard object. If the note content gets transferred before the user drops the note somewhere, everything works perfectly. If the user drops the note somewhere before the data has been processed... well, everything blocks forever. Is it safe to just have the background thread write the data to the pasteboard?

• Elegant Algorithm for Parsing Data Stream Into Record

  I am interfacing with a hardware device that streams data to my app over Wifi. The data is streaming in just fine. The data contains a character header (DATA:) that indicates a new record has begun. The issues is that the data I receive doesn't necessarily fall on the header boundary, so I have to capture the data until what I've captured contains the header. Then, everything that precedes the header goes into the previous record and everything that comes after it goes into a new record. I have this working, but wondered if anyone has done this before and has a good computer-sciencey way to solve the problem. Here's what I do: Convert the NSData of the current read to an NSString Append the NSString to a placeholder string Check placeholder string for the header (DATA:). If the header is not there, just wait for the next read. If the header exists, append whatever precedes it to a previous record placeholder and hand that placeholder off to an array as a complete record that I can further parse into fields. Take whatever shows up after the header and place it in the record placeholder so that it can be appended to in the next read. Repeat steps 3 - 5. Let me know if you see any flaws with this or have a suggestion for a better way. Seems there should be some design pattern for this, but I can't think of one. Thanks.

• django html/css windows mac problem width additional space on the top of the page

  Hi, my problem is really strange... We are developing shopping-cart system in django. The problem is, when I change anything even single letter on my computer, strange space on the top of the page appears, see the picture... I don't know since when the problem appears. But if i go back to previous version (in this case 210, we use svn), everything is ok, until i change something. I'm using windows 7 and i tried to edit this file in notepad, notepad++, e and so on... In the case when my friend changes something in this 210 version on Macbook everything is ok. Have anyone any ideas? Also in source code of the page strange "-" is added before doctype, but it is only visible in chrome. But the problem is for all browsers...! what is more... for example my home page extends, categories.html and base.html, and in this case a have two "--". • ClassCastException When Calling an EJB Remotely that Exists on Same Server

  I have 2 ejbs. Ejb-A that calls Ejb-B. They are not in the same Ear. For portability Ejb-B may or may not exist on the same server. (There is an external property file that has the provider URLs of Ejb-B. I have no control over this.) Example Code: in Ejb-A EjbBDelegate delegateB = EjbBDelegateHelper.getRemoteDelegate(); // lookup from list of URLs from props... BookOfMagic bom = delegateB.getSomethingInteresting(); Use Cases/Outcomes: When Ejb-B DOES NOT EXIST on the same server as Ejb-A, everything works correctly. (it round-robbins through the URLs) When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A happens to call Ejb-B on the same server, everything works correctly. When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A calls Ejb-B on a different server, I get: javax.ejb.EJBException: nested exception is: java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 I'm using Weblogic 10.0, Java 5, EJB3 Basically, if Ejb-B Exists on the server, it must be called ONLY on that server. Which leads me to believe that the class is getting loaded by a local classloader (on deployment?), then when called remotely, a different classloader is loading it. (causing the Exception) But it should work, as it should be Serialized into the destination classloader... What am I doing wrong?? Also, when reproducing this locally, Ejb-A would favor the Ejb-B on the same server, so it was difficult to reproduce. But this wasn't the case on other machines. NOTE: This all worked correctly for EJB2

• export and import utf8 data in mysql: best practices

  We're often faced with the need to send a data file to one of our clients with data from the database he/she needs to translate. Most of the time this export is CSV or XLS. Most of the time we create a csv dump with phpmyadmin and get an xls file in return with the translated data. The problem is that most of the time the data is UTF8 and when the file is returned as xls each and every time we load the data into mysql again we end up with utf8 problems, characters not being displayed properly, etc ... We've already doublechecked everything in mysql from my.conf to column charactersets and everything is set correctly to UTF8. My question is not how to fix the encoding issue since that's been solved but how we would best proceed in the future handling this situation? What export format should we hand over? How should we import (just mysql load data infile or our own processing scripts). What is the general consensus on how to handle this situation? We would like to continue using excel if possible since that's the format almost everybody expects including our clients' translation agencies. Our clients' ease of use is the most important factor here, without overloading us with major issues each time. The best of both worlds :)

• Creating a desktop icon using JWS JNLP for a JavaFX app.

  I am trying to get a custom destop icon to be displayed for my app but for some reason no matter what I do the same default java icon shows up. I have tried everything I can think of and gone and compared my jnlp file with others whose icons seem to work ok. According to everything I have read the following should work fine. • ASP MVC.Net 3 RC2 bug ?

  Hello, so far I've been using ASP.Net 3 BETA. Everything was working fine till the update to RC2 version. Of course I've read ScottGu's article about RC2. My problem is following. Basically I have 2 controllers: public class DynamicPageController : Controller { public ActionResult Redirect(string resource, int? pageNumber, int? id) { } } public class SystemController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { } } In the Globals.asax I have routes like this: public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.MapRoute( "SystemRoute", "System/{action}", new { controller = "System", action = "Index" } ); routes.MapRoute( "PageRoute", "{resource}/{id}/{pageNumber}", new { controller = "DynamicPage", action = "Redirect", resource = UrlParameter.Optional, pageNumber = UrlParameter.Optional, id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); } In the code, I have simple link creation: System.Web.Mvc.UrlHelper u = new System.Web.Mvc.UrlHelper(context); string url = u.Action("Index", "System"); and the url is "/my_app/System" in both versions (BETA and RC2) But the code below (the syntax is the same as above, only controller and action names are different): string url = u.Action("Redirect", "DynamicPage", new RouteValueDictionary(new { resource = "Home" })); gives url which is null in RC2. It should be (and in fact in BETA was) "/my_app/Home" Why ? Is it a bug ? How can I create url for my "DynamicPage" controller ? Regards BTW: From where can I now download ASP.Mvc BETA version along with ASP.Net Web Pages 1.0 installers ? Since RC2 announcement I have problems finding mentioned 2 installers. Normally I would upgrade my code but this issue described above makes me stay with BETA for a while, since I have no time for migration and testing everything now.

  Hi Everyone, I recently started a little company with a couple of guys. Ours is the typical startup, a lot of ideas, dreams, talent and work hours :P. Our initial business plan was to develop a DM (Document Manager) with several features found on DropBox and other tools but with a big differentiator. Then we got in the team this Business Guy (I must say that several of us could be called 'Business Guys' but we are mainly hackers, he is just Another 'Networking Guy'), and along with him came this market analysis for a DM aimed at a very specific and narrow niche. We have many elements to believe in his market study and the idea is the classic "The market is X million, so if we grab a 10%...", and the market is really there to grab because all big providers deemed it too little and fled, let's say that the market is 5 million USD and demand very specific features. If we decide to go for this niche product we face a sales cycle of about 7 months, and the main goal of these revenue is to develop more ambitious projects. (Institutional VC is out of the question if you want to keep a marginal ownership of your company in my country). The only overlap between the niche and the mass market product features is the ability to store documents; everything else requires that we focus all of our efforts towards one or the other. I've studied a lot about the differences between Mass and Niche Markets, but I want to hear from people with actual experience. So everything comes down to this: If you have a really “saleable” idea what is the right thing to do: to go for the niche or go for the big prize and target primarily the mass market? • Django 'ImproperlyConfigured' error after deployment on google app engine

  Hello, I'm currently trying to get my first django project running on Google App Engine. I followed the instructions given here http://www.allbuttonspressed.com/projects/djangoappengine as best I could. Unfortunately I have run into some issues. Locally everything runs fine, no problems. I then tried to deploy my project to the cloud. This is where I'm totally stuck. I always receive 500 Server Errors coupled with google.appengine.runtime.DeadlineExceededError's. Every now and then I get the following error message in my logs, which I think is the root of the problem : <class 'django.core.exceptions.ImproperlyConfigured'>: ImportError projectyalanda.pricecompare: No module named projectyalanda.pricecompare Obviously something is wrong in the way I reference my django app. Why this is only an issue in the cloud is a mystery to me. The interesting part in the settings.py file is setup as following: INSTALLED_APPS = ( 'djangotoolbox', # 'django.contrib.auth', 'django.contrib.contenttypes', 'django.contrib.sessions', 'projectyalanda.pricecompare', ) I absolutely can't figure out why django/appengine wouldn't be able to find the module, especially since everything works perfectly locally. So where else can I look? The local folder structure is of course also correct as automatically done by django, so maybe something is messed up during deployment? How would I be able to find out? • Android - ListActivity, add Header and Footer view

  I'm using ListActivity, listview. listView = getListView(); just working perfectly. I added footer view as LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater(); listView.addFooterView( inflater.inflate( R.layout.footer, null ), null, false); and everything was shiny but ugly, so i wanted to add this footer view (which contains only 1 edittext and only 1 button ) to header of listView as LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater(); listView.addHeaderView( inflater.inflate( R.layout.footer, null ), null, false); and suddenly everything goes wrong, and i get RuntimeException immediately. Suspended(exception RuntimeException) ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread$ActivityRecord, Intent) ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread$ActivityRecord, Intent) ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread, Activity$ActiviyRecord, Intent), so on.. Why is it throws exception ? What is different between addFooterView and addHeaderView, and how can i add Header to ListActivity ? UPDATE So as you can read in comments, my logcat still doesn't work, but i just tried next at this moment: } catch(Exception e){ Writer result = new StringWriter(); PrintWriter printWriter = new PrintWriter(result); e.printStackTrace(printWriter); String error = result.toString(); } and afterward i put breakpoint, and i can read error in expressions section. it said : java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot add header view to list -- setAdapter has already been called. it was instructive for all of us. After change sort of commands, it works perferctly.

• Using Rails, problem testing has_many relationship

  The summary is that I've code that works when manually testing, but isn't doing what I would think it should when trying to build an automated test. Here are the details: I've two models: Payment and PaymentTranscation. class Payment ... has_many :transactions, :class_name => 'PaymentTransaction' class PaymentTranscation ... belongs_to payment The PaymentTransaction is only created in a Payment model method, like so: def pay_up ... transactions.create!(params...) ... end I've manually tested this code, inspected the database, and everything works well. The failing automated test looks like this: def test_pay_up purchase = Payment.new(...) assert purchase.save assert_equal purchase.state, :initialized.to_s assert purchase.pay_up # this should create a new PaymentTransaction... assert_equal purchase.state, :succeeded.to_s assert_equal purchase.transactions.count, 1 # FAILS HERE; transactions is an empty array end If I step through the code, it's clear that the PaymentTransaction is getting created correctly (though I can't see it in the database because everything is in a testing transaction). What I can't figure out is why transactions is returning an empty array in the test when I know a valid PaymentTransaction is getting created. Anybody have some suggestions? Thanks in advance, east

• jQuery Validation plugin results in empty AJAX POST

  Hi, I have tried to solve this issue for at couple of days with no luck. I have a form, where I use the validation plugin, and when I try to submit it, it submits empty vars. Now, if I remove the validation, everything works fine. • Ruby Fileutils.cp_r Permission Denied when :preserve => true

  Hello, I am trying to implement a poor-man's backup/mirroring script and am having some trouble. I am on Windows-XP, using Ruby's FileUtils module to recursively copy files. So long as I don't set the :preserve flag to true, everything works fine. Works: FileUtils.cp_r('Source_dir', 'Dest_dir', :verbose => true) Doesn't work: FileUtils.cp_r('Source_dir', 'Dest_dir', :verbose => true, :preserve => true) I have full permissions on the Dest_dir as it's on the desktop of my local machine and I just created it. I can copy and delete files and folders, but apparently changing, or maintaining the file attributes with :preserve isn't working. I haven't had a chance to try this on a Mac or linux box, but from reading around online the :preserve flag is a normal stumbling block to come up against in a Windows environment. In a similar line of questioning, what is the default behavior for FileUtils.cp_r when it encounters an existing file at the destination directory? Simply overwrite and replace everything in Destination with whatever is in Source, or can I skip a file with conflicts and just log it for resolution later? (If this should be a separate question, just let me know and I'll make it one.) Thanks, Spencer

• HtmlAgilityPack - Vs 2010 - c# ASP - File Not found

  First, I've already searched the web & StackOverflow for hours, and i did find a lot about troubleshooting HtmlAgilityPack and tried most of these but nothing worked. The Situation: I'm developing a C# ASP .NET WebPart in SharePoint Foundation. Everything works fine, now I want to Parse a HTML Page to get all ImagePaths and save the Images on HD/Temp. To do that I was downloading HtmlAgilityPack, current version, add reference to Project, everything looks OK, IntelliSense works fine. The Exception: But when I want to run the section where HtmlAgilityPack should be used my Browser shows me a FileNotFoundException - The File or Assembly could not be found. What I tried: After first searches i tried to include v1.4.0 of HtmlAgilityPack cause I read that the current version in some case is not really stable. This works fine to until the point I want to use HtmlAgilityPack, the same Exception. I also tried moving the HtmlAgilityPack direct to the Solution directory, nothing changed. I tried to insert HtmlAgilityPack via using and I tried direct call e.g. HtmlAgilityPack.HtmlDocument. Conclusion : When I compile no error occurs, the reference is set correct. When I trace the HtmlAgilityPack.dll with ProcMon the Path is shown correct, but sometimes the Result is 'File Locked with only Readers' but I don't know enough about ProcMon to Know what this means or if this is critical. It couldn't have something to do with File Permissions because if I check the DLL the permissions are all given.

• latin1/unicode conversion problem with ajax request and special characters

  Server is PHP5 and HTML charset is latin1 (iso-8859-1). With regular form POST requests, there's no problem with "special" characters like the em dash (–) for example. Although I don't know for sure, it works. Probably because there exists a representable character for the browser at char code 150 (which is what I see in PHP on the server for a literal em dash with ord). Now our application also provides some kind of preview mechanism via ajax: the text is sent to the server and a complete HTML for a preview is sent back. However, the ordinary char code 150 em dash character when sent via ajax (tested with GET and POST) mutates into something more: %E2%80%93. I see this already in the apache log. According to various sources I found, e.g. http://www.tachyonsoft.com/uc0020.htm , this is the UTF8 byte representation of em dash and my current knowledge is that JavaScript handles everything in Unicode. However within my app, I need everything in latin1. Simply said: just like a regular POST request would have given me that em dash as char code 150, I would need that for the translated UTF8 representation too. That's were I'm failing, because with PHP on the server when I try to decode it with either utf8_decode(...) or iconv('UTF-8', 'iso-8859-1', ...) but in both cases I get a regular ? representing this character (and iconv also throws me a notice: Detected an illegal character in input string ). My goal is to find an automated solution, but maybe I'm trying to be überclever in this case? I've found other people simply doing manual replacing with a predefined input/output set; but that would always give me the feeling I could loose characters. The observant reader will note that I'm behind on understanding the full impact/complexity with things about Unicode and conversion of chars and I definitely prefer to understand the thing as a whole then a simply manual mapping. thanks

• TimeoutException when WCF Host and Client are in the same process

  I've ran into a really weird problem. I am building a heavily distributed application where each app instance can either be a Host and/or Client to a WCF-Service (very p2p-like). Everything works fine, as long as the Client and the targeted Host (By which I mean the app, not the Host, since currently everything runs on a single computer (so no Firewall problems etc.)) are NOT the same. IF they are the same, then the app hangs for exactly 1 Minute and then throws a TimeoutException. WCF-Logging did not produce anything helpful. • Updating join fields in an ORM command

  I have a question about object relational updates on join fields. I am working on a project using codeigniter with datamapper dmz. But I think my problem is with general understanding of ORMs. So fell free to answer with any ORM you know. I have two tables, Goods and Tags. One good can have many tags. Everything is working, but I am looking for a way to merge tags. Meaning I decide I want to remove tag A and instead have everything that is tagged by it, now be tagged by tag B. I only have models for the goods and the tags. There is no separate model for the join relationship, as I believe these ORMs were designed to work. I know how to delete a tag. But I dont know how to reach into the join table to redirect the references since there is no model for the join table. I would rather use the ORM then issuing a raw SQL command.

• How to change default locale in BIRT

  Hi everybody, I am working with the BIRT reporting engine and my current task is to implement internationalization for reports. We are using the webviewer to generate and download pdf reports. There is a parameter (__locale) which allows me to specify the locale that should be used to generate a report. So far everything works fine. There is an additional requirement I have not been able to implement, though. Additionally to the locale which is set by the http parameter there should also be the possibility to specify some kind of fallback locale. Take the following example: There are two property-files common_en_US.properties and common_en_GB.properties. The first locale to be used should be en_GB (__locale=en_GB). Everything works fine if the common_en_GB.properties file exist. But I would also like to tell BIRT to use common_en_US.properties if the en_GB-file cannot be found, which does not work as expected. I tried to solve this by manually setting the Java default locale before executing BIRT because I thought that BIRT would use the Java mechanism to resolve localized strings. Unfortunately this attempt does not work. Is there a different way to do what I would like to do? Is it possible to do something like that at all? Thanks a lot! Johannes

• ASMX Web Service online works when all of the code is in one file without code-behind

  I have an ASMX Web Service that has its code entirely in a code-behind file, so that the entire contents of the .asmx file is: <%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/AddressValidation.cs" Class="AddressValidation" %> On my test machine (Windows XP with IIS 5), I set up a virtual directory just for this ASP.NET 2.0 solution and everything works great. All my code is separated nicely and it just works. However, when we deployed this solution to our Windows Server 2003 development environment, we noticed that the code only compiled when all of the code was dropped directly into the .asmx file, meaning that the solution didn't work with code-behind. We can't figure out why this is happening. One thing that's different about our setup in our development environment is that instead of creating a separate virual directory just for this solution, we dropped it into an existing directory that runs a classic ASP application. So here we have a folder with an ASP.NET 2.0 application within a directory that contains a classic ASP application. Granted, everything in the ASP.NET 2.0 application works if all of the code is within the .asmx file and not in code-behind, but we'd really like to know why it's not recognizing the code-behind files and compiling it correctly.

• jQuery Address - redirect after form submit

  Hello all, I use jQuery and AJAX to load content from links and forms into a content div. In addition I use the Address plugin to enable the back button and refresh. On the server side I use Java and Spring MVC. Since I'm using jQuery Address and AJAX the only page that is directly loaded is "index.html". Everything else is loaded into a content div, and what page to load is specified in the hash, ie. "index.html#/users/add.html" will load "users/add.html". Now, "users/add.html" contains a form for creating a new user. When the form is submitted and everything went OK, the controller redirects to "users/index.html". The problem is that jQuery Address doesn't know about the redirect, so the url will remain "index.html#/users/add.html". And this is a problem when you refresh the page and then get sent back to the form, instead of the index page. Is there a way to fix this problem? Thanks, Stian

  I have applied CSS style to JavaFX components and it looks like everything is working fine except one situation: when I add JavaFX components to component tree on-the-fly their CSS styles are not applied. I noticed that: Components added dynamically look just like style information was not applied. If you set their style in JavaFX code then everything works fine. After changing stylesheets property (so that it points to another valid stylesheet) the objects already added render properly. Does anyone know the solution to this problem? I could of course put all the properties into JavaFX code or provide another stylesheet (for every existing stylesheed) that would contain the same data and change stylesheet right after adding any component, but I would like to find some elegant solution. • Why does the following Toggle function perform four different operations instead of two?

  You can see the implementation here: http://jsfiddle.net/BMWZd/8/ What I am trying to do, when you click on 'John Brown', you see the first element at top turn black. When you click it again, the border of the dotted circle disappears, then when you click 'John Brown' again, you see something else, then finally once again it all disappears. What I am trying to achieve is when you click it once, everything turns black (like it does now), then you click it again, everything disappears and goes back to the original state. Important distinction, what I mean is...when one of the names in the box are not clicked. So if you clicked John Brown then moved to Jack Dorsey, the #1 at top should stay black. But if you were to click Jack Dorsey again, i.e. you 'unclicked' it, then it should disappear. Also, how do I tighten it up, so that it responds quicker. Now when you click it, it feels like there is a little bit of a lag between when it was clicked and when it responds.
