• What online brokers offer APIs?

  So I'm getting really sick of E*TRADE and, being a developer, would love to find an online broker that offers an API. It would be great to be able to write my own trading tools, and maybe even modify existing ones. Based on my research so far, I've only found one option. Interactive Brokers offers a multi-language API (Java/C++/ActiveX/DDE) and has some fairly decent commission rates to boot. I want to make sure there aren't any other options out there I should be considering. Any ideas? Update: Based on answers so far, here's a quick list... • How to implement buffering with timeout in RX

  I need to implement an event processing, that is done delayed when there are no new events arriving for a certain period. (I have to queue up a parsing task when the text buffer changed, but I don't want to start the parsing when the user is still typing.) I'm new in RX, but as far as I see, I would need a combination of BufferWithTime and the Timeout methods. I imagine this to be working like this: it buffers the events until they are received regularly within a specified time period between the subsequent events. If there is a gap in the event flow (longer than the timespan) it should return propagate the events buffered so far. Having a look at how Buffer and Timeout is implemented, I could probably implement my BufferWithTimeout method (if everyone have one, please share with me), but I wonder if this can be achieved just by combining the existing methods. Any ideas?

• Wrapper not resizing to full content size

  Hey guys, I have a div called #background. I have most of my content in it and I want it to resize when I add more content. As far as I know the way to do this is to assign it no height? I have done this in my layout.css file. As far as I can see, my #background doesnt close until after the last bit of content which is what I want, but it's not working. It seems to be just stopping after my #special offers div, I#m not sure why this is? Colm

• Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the preferred method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. <bean id="c" class="com.domain.TestController"> <constructor-arg ref="service" /> </bean> <bean id="service" class="com.domain.Service" /> My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• iphone navigation tutorial with simple form

  Hi All, I'm looking to create quite a basic app with a very simple navigation system but each of the tutorials I've come across so far go into too much depth or just involve lots of different form elements. I want to keep it as straight forward and simple as I can. If anyone knows of any tutorials that can show me how to create a root view with say 5 or 6 sub views each displaying a form for collecting different types of data I would be very grateful. This seems like quite a simple thing to achieve but so far I havent found anything that specifically relates to what I want to do. thanks in advance!

• Do I have to create a static library to test my application?

  I'm just getting started with TDD and am curious as to what approaches others take to run their tests. For reference, I am using the google testing framework, but I believe the question is applicable to most other testing frameworks and to languages other than C/C++. My general approach so far has been to do either one of three things: Write the majority of the application in a static library, then create two executables. One executable is the application itself, while the other is the test runner with all of the tests. Both link to the static library. Embed the testing code directly into the application itself, and enable or disable the testing code using compiler flags. This is probably the best approach I've used so far, but clutters up the code a bit. Embed the testing code directly into the application itself, and, given certain command-line switches either run the application itself or run the tests embedded in the application. None of these solutions are particularly elegant... How do you do it?

• What is the best logging solution for a C# .NET 3.5 project?

  My team is about to start a new enterprise wide ASP.NET development project, quite possibly the largest undertaken by my department so far and the largest project that I've ever worked on. I'm looking for a good logging solution for the system. Firstly, what logging tools are currently available and widely used? Secondly, for an ASP.NET (probably MVC) enterprise applicaiton, which tool is most appropriate based on your experience? So far I've used Log4net almost exclusively for all my previous projects. It's a fantastic tool, however I would like to see if there is anything I've not used out there before I start a project of this magnitude or if there is any reason I would not want to use Log4net for a project of this size.

• ASP.NET: CSS friendly calendar control

  I'm using the built-in Calendar control. It works, but in a few places the way the HTML is rendered is broken or not CSS-friendly and unfortunately cannot be changed (it's hard coded). I was hoping they would fix this in .NET 4.0, but as far as I can tell the Calendar control hasn't been changed at all. Also, as far as I know, there's no CSS adapter for the Calendar control. So, I would need a control that would: Allow me to customize the content of each cell (like OnDayRender works) Allow me to assign CSS classes to any HTML it may render Not render anything automatically that cannot be turned off, except layout code No auto-postback or auto-JS code (I can handle these by hand using simple links or custom JS calls) Basically a simple calendar view control that would give me full rendering control.   Hello, I come from PHP side, but I'm in need to develop a site using ASP .NET So far I manage to create a master page. Now I'm dealing with menus and submenus What I'm trying to do is, if the user picks "About Us" from the main menu, under the about us page I want to display a submenu with the options "who we are, what we do, contact us" If the user picks "Our Products" from the main menu, then under the products page I want to display a submenu with the options "product 1, product 2, product 3" Is this possible with only one master page? I read something about menu control but not sure that is what I need. So far I found how to display a sitemap, but not specific sections of a sitemap, if this is the way to do things. • Looking for a lean WYSIWYG inline editor for CMS projects that includes an image upload feature?

  Hey guys, I am looking to find a lean WYSIWYG inline editor. The main required feature is image uploading. A simple way to upload an image to the server and use it in the content being editted. I have come across a whole bunch of editors but nothing I liked so far. I am looking for something open source and free. So far I have checked out TinyMCE which is free.. untill you need image uploading capabilities. Ckeditor looks great.. uses jquery.. but requires you to have your own server side script to upload images. They barely give any documentation on how to do this. There were a few others, but the bottom line was that I cant find anything that is simple with out of the box image uploading capabilities. Thanks for any advice you may give!

• PHP, MVC, 404 - How can I redirect to 404?

  I'm trying to build my own MVC as a practice and learning experience. So far, this is what I have: <?php require "config.php"; $page = $_GET['page']; if( isset( $page ) ) { echo "isset is true"; if( file_exists( MVCROOT . "/$page.php" ) ) { include "$page.php"; } else { header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found"); } } ?> My problem here is, I can't use header to send to a 404 because the headers have been send already. Should I just redirect to a 404.html or is there a better way? Feel free to critique what I have so far (it's very little). I would love suggestions and ideas. Thanks!

• Coldfusion 9 Inter portlet communication?

  I am having a hard time trying to find documentation at achieving IPC using Coldfusion 9 portlets under JBOSS. Does anyone have any good references I can take a look at? Or maybe some example code that I can go off of? So far I've been successful in getting my portlets working under Liferay (JBOSS), form submission, different views (edit/help) all work fine. Just need to know how to have one portlet on the page talk with another portlet. So far have been unsuccessful :( Anyone?

• Can I get a faster output pipe than /dev/null ?

  Hi I am running a huge task [automated translation scripted with perl + database etc.] to run for about 2 weeks non-stop. While thinking how to speed it up I saw that the translator outputs everything (all translated sentences, all info on the way) to STDOUT all the time. This makes it work visibly slower when I get the output on the console. I obviously piped the output to /dev/null, but then I thought "could there be something even faster?" It's so much output that it'd really make a difference. And that's the question I'm asking You, because as far as I know there is nothing faster... (But I'm far from being a guru having used linux on a daily basis only last 3 years)

• The framerate of one movieclip slowly declines over time. What could cause this? [Flash CS3]

  I'm creating a flash rhythm game. I have a looping (at a certain frame I have a gotoAndPlay) movieclip that represents the notes that scroll by, which plays for about three minutes. As the level progresses, the movieclip's framerate begins to lag and stutter. I have no idea how this could occur. It is also worth mentioning that the notes are represented by text, if that makes any difference. As far as posting my code goes, I think it would be far too convoluted to be worth your time. And I think it could be a simple problem. I just don't understand how the framerate of this movieclip could drop independent of the rest of the game.

• WinForms / .Net interactive world map - how?

  In a CD collection program, I have each artist's country of origin stored in the main database and want to display a map of the world which: Colour-codes each country depending on the number of CDs by artists in that country Allows clicking on each country to filter a list of CDs to only ones by artists in that country This is a heavily simplified version of what I'm trying to do, but if I can at least get this far the rest should be easy enough to figure out. So far the closest thing I've found to what I'm trying to do is here: http://www.synergetechsolutions.com/blog/analytics-world-map-control Ideally I don't want to be embedding Flash in my program though, and the only other solutions I've found all involve SVG which I haven't managed to get working in practice outside of a web browser control (and I DEFINITELY don't want to be embedding a browser in the forms). Something in pure managed code and either GDI+ or WPF would be preferable. Are there any existing components that would get me started, or can anyone suggest how to approach it from scratch?

• Help to convert PostgreSQL dates into SQL Server dates

  Hello I'm doing some data conversion from PostgreSQL to Microsoft SQL Server. So far it has all went well and I almost have the entire database dump script running. There is only one thing that is now messed up: dates. The dates are dumped to a string format. These are two example formats I've seen so far: '2008-01-14 12:00:00' and the more precise '2010-04-09 12:23:45.26525' I would like a regex (or set of regexs) that I could run so that will replace these with SQL Server compatible dates. Anyone know how I can do that?

• How to Embed Image in Outlook Signature?

  Is it possible to create an HTML email signature for Outlook 2003 or above that doesn't reference external images? That is, using those special "cid" reference but embed the image itself in the signature and not on the file system or network. This is for an web application that generates a "standard" email signature based on various input from a user. It has worked fine so far with a single "embedded" image. But a new feature is going to require the possible addition of multiple tiny images. Getting to user to save one email signature template and one image to the user's machine is about the limit of what I'd like to require of the user. But forcing the user to save multiple images seem to be pushing things a little to far in my opinion. So my problem is trying to embed the images into without having to inconvenience the user with multiple downloads first.

• What tools do you use when generating markup from mockups?

  So I endeavor to spend most of time on the app server side of things but time to time I need to get my hands dirty and generate markup/css/js from a wireframe or mockup. As far as tools go, Ive found browsershots and Litmus app helpful and of course, vm's as well for checking things out live in ie-{6,7,8}. Otherwise I do the heavy lifting in vim. For generating new markup thats not tied to a target design I think some of the css frameworks & tools like sass look useful but Im skeptical of their utility when needing to generate markup to match a photoshop design. So what tips / tools do you keep in your markup generating utility belt when building solid markup from designs? • What wording in the C++ standard allows static_cast<non-void-type*>(malloc(N)); to work?

  As far as I understand the wording in 5.2.9 Static cast, the only time the result of a void*-to-object-pointer conversion is allowed is when the void* was a result of the inverse conversion in the first place. Throughout the standard there is a bunch of references to the representation of a pointer, and the representation of a void pointer being the same as that of a char pointer, and so on, but it never seems to explicitly say that casting an arbitrary void pointer yields a pointer to the same location in memory, with a different type, much like type-punning is undefined where not punning back to an object's actual type. So while malloc clearly returns the address of suitable memory and so on, there does not seem to be any way to actually make use of it, portably, as far as I have seen.

• deallocated memory in tableview: message sent to deallocated instance

NSDictionary *tempDict = [chosenStock values]; NSArray *tempArr = [tempDict allValues]; cell.textLabel.text = [tempArr objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; return cell; This is all under cellForRowAtIndexPath When I try to release the chosenStock object though I get this error: [CFDictionary release]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x434d3d0 Ive tried using NSZombieEnabled and Build and Analyze to detect problems but no luck thus far. Ive even gone so far as to comment bits and pieces of the code with NSLog but no luck. I'll post the code for StockData below this. As far as I can figure something is getting deallocated before I do the release but I'm not sure how. The only place I've got release in my code is under dealloc method call. • Learning networking fundamentals

  Not having a CS degree has left large holes in my programming related knowledge. In particular I'd really like to learn some of the computer networking stuff I would have got in a good CS degree. The problem I really have is "not knowing what I don't know". So far I know I don't know anything about the following (as far as computer networks are concearned) -sockets -ports -internet protocol (the whole IP stack I keep hearing about). Can anyone add more to the list? Can anyone suggest a project (writing a toy web server?) Thanks in advance

• What database is a good progression from MS Access for Coldfusion?

  All my (home) CF learning has so far been done using Access as a database, and as far as the DB goes I "get it". There's no database server, and no need to log on to the database or anything, and setting up table relationships is easy and visual. Oh and its essentially free to deploy. However, I'm now working on an application that's likely to be used across several businesses and probably up to 50 concurrent users. I've heard that Access really isn't up to multi user use or production use on an app. What would you recommend as more suitable, preferably easy to grasp, with minimal tweeking needed for my SQL (I used a tool to convert to MySQL and it certainly handles concatenation differently, I dont want to have to do too much debugging), visual interface available, scalable, backupable, and whatever else I need that I don't yet know I need!
