  I am a freelance web developer and I am working on a PHP/MySQL/Javascript based project. It's a web app that uses a custom CMS with user types, followers system, search forms, blogs, social integration. It will take about 3 months to finish, according to a roadmap I make (based on current development stage) and about a month after that for bug fixing and testing. So I have to tell them a price.   I always hear that PHP is for medium and small websites whereas .NET and Java for enterprise applications. My question is about PHP. Why is PHP not a good option for enterprise web applications? Is it because if the web application becomes bigger then PHP will be slower as it is an interpreted language? I know that corporate world will choose .NET or J2EE because of the integration with their products and because of back end services, etc. However, if we just have PHP for building sites and web applications then how can we use it to perform well with big sites? In short, Is there a relationship between the performance of PHP and the size of the website? What are the factors that make PHP not appropriate option for big sites?

  I am working on a personal project that offers a service online. I'd like put this out to the public. I don't want to reinvent the wheel and use an existing template/open source project and add my service specific functionality. The features I am looking for are: Support for different roles (I need to have an admin role, customer and preferred customer roles) An admin section where admins can manage user accounts, login as with users credentials for providing support Customer pages that are role specific (Ex: Some functionality can be used by preferred customers but not non preferred ones) Preferably a pricing/plans page with payment gateway integration These are some of the basic pages available in most of service sites online. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered?   Is there a good note taking application in ubuntu like Evernote exists for windows and Mac users. Requirements for good applications:- A thumbnail/list preview for all the created notes. An integration with the email address so that we can view the notes anywhere anytime. Any easy way to input text, video, pdf, images etc. I have tried tomboy, basket notes. They aren't that good. • Best way to find freelance c# developer

  I am a developer based in London developing a desktop WPF business application using c# (+ MVVM/DDD/Nhibernate/Unity/Postsharp...). I need to find someone to review my code to suggest improvements and then to write integration tests. This could potentially be an ongoing relationship, expanding into writing new features etc. It would suit an experienced developer with a strong interest in design principles and writing clean code, who can work part time. However, the developer would need to work at my home based office (although timing is flexible). Websites such as elance and odesk seem to tie you in, and I would prefer to pay a one off introduction fee and then deal with the developer direct. Stack exchange seems quite expensive but is a possibility if I don't find an alternative. So, are there any other websites I can try?

• Best accounting software for freelance/contractor programmer? [closed]

  I know this isn't exactly a programming question but I am hoping to find some programmers who freelance or do contractor work in the US. I have started to work on side jobs and have been billing my clients using Paypal. I then would store those records in a Google excel doc but realize this will get out of hand as time goes on and am looking for a good solution. I am no accountant so I am not sure of everything I would need but I am guessing basic invoicing, expenses, reporting, integration with paypal, etc.. Any contractors or freelancers in here could recommend what they use? I have researched a few but would like to hear what other people are using and how it is working out for them. • How do I enable the Ubuntu One tray applet?

  I am running 10.04 and I am unable to get a tray applet to appear for Ubuntu One. I am sure there was an applet in 9.04 (Jaunty) and 9.10 (Karmic). I have the package ubuntuone-client-gnome installed which Synaptic tells me "This package contains the tray applet and Nautilus extension, providing integration with the GNOME desktop." The applet is not on the "Add to panel..." list and there doesn't appear to be anything in the menus. So how do I make the applet appear?

• How do I disable the calendar events section in GNOME Shell's clock applet?

  I'm running gnome-shell 3.2.0 and when I click the clock applet in the middle of the top panel, the following shows up: I have no need for the entire right part, right of the dotted line, which is dedicated to the "Online Accounts" integration with evolution's calendar. Is there a way to remove/disable it, so I can just have the date part of the calendar applet (left of the dotted vertical line)? I just like to browse the dates to see how many days are left in the month and stuff like that. I use Google's web interface for my "Calendaring".

• Choosing the right version control system for .NET projects [closed]

  I'm getting ready for my first "bigger" .NET project (ASP.NET MVC 3/4) on which I'm going to lead another 2 programmers and right now I'm choosing the right version control system for the job (plus I'm gonna use it for my future development too). My problem is that I did't use any version control system before, so I would like it to have as fast learning curve and intuitive merging as possible. So far I quickly looked at VisualSVN (I like the Visual Studio integration in it), but I'm reading everywhere how Git is awesome and dunno which one to choose (not limited to these two).. Maybe I'm ovethinking this but I like when everything goes smoothly:) I'd like to hear some opinions from people who used multiple version control systems (preferably on VS projects) what do you think is the less complicated and effective version control system for such a use (one to 5 man projects)?
