• Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

  Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... • Old notebook internal display randomly not recognized

  I have an old Acer TM4001 notebook. If the laptop is powered-off, with the lid closed, when I power it on, it generally works. Then, without touching anything, if I reboot the computer the internal display wil not work anymore. To make it working again I need to shut down the pc, close and reopen the lid and then turn it on. If I close and reopen the lid if it is not working after power the pc on, it won't work. When the screen is working, closing and opening it has no effect (the data cable seems ok). The external monitor always works as expected: If the internal display is not detected, the external will be the main (and only) display. This is not OS-related. When the screen is not working I cannot see the POST. What could be the cause for this?

• My Smart-Pad doesn't work, even when I activate it

  I have an Asus X5DIJ, and I have had it since Christmas. However, today, the Smart-Pad stopped working. I wasn't clicking anything, I was just typing. Someone suggested downloading drivers, and I'm not to good with guides, so can anyone assist me? Also, when I click on the Smart-Pad icon in the notification area, that icon is crossed out. There is a red X over it, no matter if it is on / off. Can anyone help me, this has happened to my cousin who has the same laptop as me, he now uses a mouse, but I'd rather keep the Smart - Pad.

• Compaq nc4200 screen cutting out and keyboard lagging after dropping - could I repair this?

  I have a HP Compaq nc4200 laptop. I got it from a family member who no longer needed it, who got it from a sale of old office equipment, so it's at the very least third-hand, and somewhat battered. Today, I dropped it. It seemed unharmed at first, but the screen cuts out every few minutes (sometimes seconds), then fades back. Keyboard input also occasionally starts lagging, as does the mouse. It might be a coincidence, but, oddly, it seems as if, when the screen cuts out, it comes back sooner if I use the trackpad. Is this something that I could fix? What might be causing it?

• Logging in to a locked computer

  Just recently I have stumbled across an old family laptop that has been out of use for nearly two years. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium so I'm not quite as enthused about my find as I originally thought I was going to be. However, when I power up the computer it immediately bring me to a login prompt. No one in the family remembers the password it is set to and I am eager to get into this machine. Does anyone know of a way to work around this issue and get into the computer to be able to find out what was configured and saved on it two years ago. Without re-installing the OS I want to bring it back into commission within the family.

• MacBook says to replace battery. Should I?

  Hi! My MacBook says that battery is not charging, and the battery is completely empty (in fact, pressing the button on the battery illuminates no LEDs). If I plug the power adapter off the mac shuts off immediately. I tried with a spare adapter, and it won't charge it. System information says it has 380 cycles. The battery is 2.5 years old. System profiler says the battery has 0 mAh of capacity, and that it should be replaced. Should I just buy a new battery, or should I bring it to an apple point, and leave it there? They can take a look at it (it's on AppleCare), they told me that they will repair it is there is anything wrong with the charging circuit, but they won't give me a new battery. They will keep the laptop for 10 working days at least... I hate when this happens :P

• Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

  Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

• Microsoft Basic Office 2007 Activation Keys won't work after re-installing on my Laptop

  So, I've upgraded my hard-drive on my laptop, and proceeded to grab my trusty copper-faced Official MS Office disk to do an install. I have three licenses with the fancy green-blue paper that identifies the license keys. Problem is, that for each of these license keys, when the Office 2007 software asks that I enter the "Product Key" it states: The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it Why would Microsoft want to inhibit/prohibit re-installs on the same machine that the software was initially installed to? Incidentally, the same goofy error happens with each of the three valid product key (activation keys) that I enter.

• Bad sound quality of 3.5mm headphone with mic on laptop

  I have a set of headphones that have a built-in mic for hands-free calling. They just work great on my Sony Ericsson Cedar cellphone. The problem is that when I connect headphone to my Dell N5010 laptop to listen to music, the quality is horrible, with very weak or no vocals. They funny part is when I hold down the talk button on the mic (headphone mic), at which point it sounds great, but goes back to bad quality as soon as I release talk button. Also, when I take out the jack a little, at some point, the sound is great but I have to hold the jack there. I looked for any configuration on the sound card driver but find nothing. Besides using a glue to hold down the talk button of mic :), is there any other solution?

• Currently well suited SATA2-SSDs for Laptop usage

  I am looking for a solid state drive for my laptop. My dillemma: I have been waiting for the new Intel SSDs since Q3/2010, as I've heard they should be better and cheaper, due to lower memory manufacturing costs. Now it looks like the new Intel drives are very fast, but still expensive. I would still buy one of them if I could benefit from the full speed. My hardware only has a SATA-2 port though. Thus, my question: Is it worthwhile to buy one of those new Intel SSDs made for SATA-3 if I won't be able to use the full speed? Are there any other promising new SSDs that will be released soon? (Inside the next 1-2 months) If I wouldn't make a good deal buying the newer, faster drives, what drives can you recommend? I don't consider this question subjective, as I am mainly looking for answers concerning the SATA-2/SATA-3 conflict.

• Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). • Laptop freezes on Wireless Mouse Adapter attach/detach

  I am using Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 with Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG. Recently I have installed Windows 7 64-bit. Now once in a while when I plug-in or plug-out wireless mouse adapter, the computer freezes (image stays on the screen, but the computer is not responsive). I have noticed that it mostly happens after I recover my computer from sleep mode. To continue using laptop I have to shut it down by pressing and holding power button for 7 seconds and then booting it up again. What can be done to prevent this?

  I am using IE8 to open a sharepoint portal on local network. Initially, I clicked on remember password after passing domain credentials. However, now I want sharepoint to ask credentials again. I've tried many options - Deleted all cookies, IE Security Tab Form Autocomplete Deleted everything. Restarted my machine. And all I could do. Still, when I open portal, sharepoint logs me in automatically. What should I do to make IE ask for credentials again?

The specs written on the dock where the battery goes are: NSTNN - Q35C My questions are: How to calculate the number of cells. I've read some post how to calculate but I don't know the nominal voltage. I saw batteries with 8,12 cells and 106Wh and 7000mAh, can I use it on my laptop or it can make damage. In other words, what the max mAh and Wh I can use for battery in my notebook?

  I'm running an Ubuntu guest OS on my Windows 7 laptop. Currently, I have it set up for bridged networking. The guest is os is configured for a static ip of 192.168.1.115, which depending on the network I'm connected to, may not be available. When I want to view my development work I hit that up in my web browser. I'm really looking for the following scenario: 1) My guest OS ip address stays constant. 2) I can access my guest os even if I don't have an internet connection, or a lan/router. 3) I can share files with my guest/host. • Using curly braces with a standard pc keyboard on a mac laptop

  I have a standard PC keyboard connection to my Mac laptop. All keys work fine but the special characters that need "Alt-Gr" as accelerator keys would not work. I have a Swiss layout where the curly braces are such special keys. However I need them all the time and having to get used to a different layout is too painful (I'd rather get used to a US Layout once and for all). Does anyone have an idea how to switch this? Note: I have managed to switch the option and the command key, so that's not my problem.

• Iphone 3GS to laptop Syncing

  I use my Iphone calender to store all my appointments and customer information etc rather than my Outlook calender on my laptop most of the time. To the best of my knowledge I have never lost any info before, but after syncing the two devices today my calender is now empty on both. I had thought that syncing would mean taking the information on both devices, amalgamating it and populating both devices with the same info? Two questions: a) Is there anyway of retrieving the lost information? (or am I sunk?) b) Is there any way of averting such disaster in the future? Whilst I suspect that "Read the manual - Idiot!" would be the correct response, any help really is greatly appreciated!

• Outlook Prompting for password from Exchange server in domain environment

  We are running exchange 2007 in a domain environment. We have mostly outlook 2003 clients, but in process of upgrading to outlook 07 over the next couple of weeks. Some users (both 03 & 07) are constantly getting prompted to enter their credentials. The 07 client I was working on this morning states "needs password" in the bottom right corner. It is also speratic, as it will work fine most days but not some other days. The user I was working with this morning, has been working fine. Now it just started up today. I have been googling this, and have found lot's of information, but nothing that has helped yet. A lot of the information out there is for outlook users using a external email account. Being they already logged into the domain, these users should not be prompted for their credentials. Any advice out there?

• Issue with Capslock key on Laptop

  For some reason my laptop has a mind of its own and the Caps Lock tends to come on whenever it feels like it. I thought it was an software issue from that reasoning, but I later cleared the OS and then reinstalled it hoping to fix the problem, but it didn't. Not only does it do that it also comes on and off whenever the letters A, S, and left shift key are pushed. So I assummed it was a keyboard issue and that the keyboard needs to be replaced, but it has one of those touch pad cap lock buttons also, because even when I press that button it tends to not react. So how can that be fixed with a keyboard replacement or is that connected still? • High fan speed after return from suspend (on Ubuntu)

  Hi, I've got a HP ProBook 5310m laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit). When I return from suspend, the fan speed is usually very high: FDTZ sensor reports "90 °C". Yes, the units are wrong, since FDTZ does not report temperature, but fan speed – that's probably just a small bug in reporting. Interestingly, when I plug or unplug the power cable for a moment, the fan speed returns back to normal. My questions: Where can I report this problem? Is it about ACPI support in the kernel? What is the address of the relevant bug tracker? As a workaround for now, how can I programmatically trigger a behavior equivalent to (un)plugging the power cable. More generally, how can I force ACPI to recalculate fan speed? Ideally, I'm looking for something like echo foo > /proc/bar. Thanks in advance!

• Operating System Not Found - BIOS recognizes, Live OS doesn't (Laptop)

  Here's the deal: I have a multi-partitioned hard drive on my laptop set up with GRUB. I got a blue-screen while working on Windows 7 and when rebooting I got the Operating System Not Found error message. I rebooted the computer once again and entered the BIOS setup just to see if recognized my HDD - it did. Next step for me was booting a Live CD and seeing if I could repair GRUB or at least check if something changed on the partitions, but it doesn't seem to recognize anything there. Tried blkid, fdisk -l, not even GParted can see it. What should I do?

• Increasing Screen Resolution to more than limit and scaling to origional

  I have a laptop, with Screen Resolution - 1366x768 (most common) - I want to increase it further to 1600x900 (or higher), in the same ratio. I want to scale the higher resolution on my current screen to fit it. I found xrandr with command xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.4x1.4, this worked but again resulted to another problem, it does the scaling thing but the cursor is still blocked into the native screen resolution and I am not able to move it further, I found that the bug is already filed here. Also this command was only for Linux, I wanted to do this thing with both Linux and Windows (including Windows 8). I want a similar software that is bug free (at least not a major bug like this) and that supports Windows as well (or two separate software for Windows and Linux). Any help is appreciated and Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I have a new laptop which comes with window 7. I want to dual-boot it with ubuntu 9.10. I have burned the install disk of 9.10. But during the install process, I am stuck in 'setup my partition'. It has 2 options: wipe out my whole hard disk' or 'manually configure' I don't want it to wipe out my whole hard disk (i want to keep my window 7). But how can I manually configure the partition to use the free space and create a partition so that I can install ubuntu 9.10 and swap space? Thank you.

• Connecting a USB laptop to a RJ45 serial port

  We are about to get our first managed switch at work (Procurve 2520G-24-PoE), and this lowly programmer gets to put on his admin hat and try to configure it. The switch has an RJ45 serial port for console access. My laptop has USB ports but no serial port. In fact, there isn't a single computer in the office with a serial port. I've seen USB-to-DB9 adapters, but I need to go from USB to RJ45 (serial). How would I go about accomplishing this? Do I need two adapters? Will USB-to-DB9 and then DB9-to-RJ45 work? • How can I use fetchmail (or another email grabber) with OSX keychain for authentication?

  Every fetchmail tutorial I've read says putting your email account password clear-text in a config file is safe. However, I prefer security through layers (since, if my terminal is up and someone suspecting such email foolery slides over and simply types "grep -i pass ~/.*" then, oops, all my base are belong to them!). Now, with msmtp (as opposed to sendmail) I can authenticate using the OSX keychain. Is there an email 'grabber' that lets me use Keychains (specifically the OSX keychain) or at least, that lets me MD5 the password? This is a duplicate of my unanswered question on serverfault. I've put it on superuser because I'm doing this on a personal computer (viz. with OSX) so it's more of a superuser question.
