• Bind shift-tab to complete-backward in fish

  I found myself using the auto-complete functionality of the fish-shell, where pressing tab twice or more cycles through the suggestions. But then I accidentaly pressed tab once to many, and I wanted to go back to the previous suggestion, so I pressed shift-tab, which only appended [z to the command. For example, when I type cd D<tab><tab>: ~> cd Desktop/ I press <tab>, result: ~> cd Documents/ Now when I press <shift+tab>, the prompt changes to ~> cd Documents/[Z instead of returning to the desired: ~> cd Desktop/ How do I do this (preferably using the fish_user_key_bindings.fish file)? The documentation only provides the special function complete.

  This might seem like a silly question but I want to get my terminology correct. Please do not delete. I will be more than happy to delete the question myself once I (with the help of a few people I hope) get to a consensus: This was my understanding: DNS root zone = . DNS root domain = (nameless) However, after reading the Wikipedia article, I'm not so sure: A domain name consists of one or more parts, technically called labels, that are conventionally concatenated, and delimited by dots, such as example.com. So this would lead me to believe: DNS root zone = . DNS root domain = . DNS root label = (nameless) Does this make sense? What is your understanding?

• Easy Transfer from a dead computer

  I had a computer that electrocuted me and the company sent me a new one. The hard drive from the old computer works fine and is in my new computer. I would like to transfer my files from the old drive to the new one, preferably using Easy Transfer (old & new computers were Win7). When I go through the Easy Transfer wizard, it assumes my old computer is running and that I can run a process to backup all my data to a single file. However, in my case I have the system drive in my new computer and want to pull the data off it. I would like to avoid rebooting the old computer, to avoid damage to myself or my data. I would like to avoid booting into the old system drive, as my new hardware is significantly different and I imagine I'll run into some missing hardware issues. What's the easiest way to get my data off this drive?

  Hi, I often find myself in the position of having to sniff on a connection between for example an arm board I am developing on, and another computer on the network, or out of the network. The easy situation is when I can install a sniffer on the computer talking to the embedded device. When it is not possible, I currently install an old 10Mb/s HUB. However I am afraid my HUB might stop working, and I would like to know some alternative. Here are the alternatives I could think of : Buy another HUB. Is that still possible ? Have some sort of ethernet sniffing bridge, like what they do for USB. I am afraid this kind of device is expensive. use ARP poisoning.

• Directly paste clipboard image into gmail message

  I would like to be able to directly paste my clipboard image into a Gmail message. I could then just do alt-print screen, go to Gmail compose and press ctrl-v to embed a screenshot, for instance. I'm not talking about embedding a image from disk into my email; that's easily done. I want to skip the step where I have to save it to disk first. Eudora/Thunderbird support this. There's a program that does this, it's at picturepaste.com, but it's paid (and and the website uses Javascript for no obvious reasons). You can see the demo movie there if it's not clear what I would like. I would like to find a free alternative, or make one myself, but I have no clue how picturepaste works.

• Can't communicate with Primary DNS Server

  A computer, with Windows 7, can't access any website by domain suddenly. Whether this computer use a wired link or connect to the WLAN, The fault persists IP and DNS obtained automatically, and seems normal (ipconfig /all return the correct info) I can visit websites by using HTTP proxy The DNS server is available, other computer in my room works properly. I can ping myself, the gateway and any other IP, but domains I can use nslookup and obtain the correct IP info There are some error information in the event log about dns client events explaining the client can not verify the DNS server available Windows network diagnosis explain that Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Primary DNS Server) I guess the dns client should be blame. I tried to do the following things but the fault persist. Reinstall the driver of network adapter Reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset) Reset Winsock (netsh winsock reset) Reset LSP I don't want to reinstall the whole os, what should I do?

• Is an Intel Atom D525 suitable to run MythTV

  I have an oldish netbook with an Atom N450 (1.6GHz, 512KB cache) - I've been using it to experiment with MythTV, but it seems really slow, even just to work through the menus! Seconds, sometimes 10 or 20s, to load a new menu. Admittedly from a remote backend, but my older Core1 based laptop seems to be fine with the same setup. I was hoping to use one of the so-called "nettop" devices which currently seem to be D525-based (1.8GHz, 1MB cache) - is double the cache really going to make that much difference? Or has the internal architecture of the Atom moved on leaps and bounds in between? Given that I design non-Intel embedded computers for a living I was hoping to get lots of hardcore architecture detail from the Intel website, so I could see for myself, but I can't find it! So: will a D525 be fast enough to run a MythTV backend/frontend combined box?

• How to make TimeMachine back up contents of any path or mounted volume

  I keep different types of data in different encrypted sparsebundle images (say, one for each client) which automatically mount upon login but can't be opened by anybody other than myself. So, after login I have a number of virtual volumes in /Volumes/ which keeps my client data both secure and organized. How do I include data inside these virtual Volumes in TimeMachine's backups, or data residing in any path on any partition/volume? I found a promising solution description at blog.eurocomp.info involving editing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist but all I can get TimeMachine to do is backing up the sparsebundle files themselves. I want it to back up the files inside the mounted image, though - something like adding /Volumes/Client_abc/ to TimeMachine's search path. Please do not redirect my to this previous question as it doesn't solve the problem at all. Please also refrain from telling me why you think I should not want this answer as that will not solve anything either. Please lastly don't say "it can't be done" unless you can technically prove that claim.

• Online Backup strategy for family individuals

  The majority of my family, including myself, uses Dropbox and Syncplicity free accounts for our syncing needs. However our backup strategy is pretty non-existent, we all have access (via webDav) to our qnap nas located at home, however we copy files accross when we can remember to do so, terrible I know. Is there tools like CrashPlan or Spideroak that allows each the accomodation of each family members syncing and back-up needs under one main account? I'm not sure how this would work, as each family member would need a seperate sub-account or would I manage each computer's syncing and backup lists from a single account? Any thoughts?

  I would like to have some kind of statistic of my daily mouse/keyboard usage to help me make my keyboard layout a little bit more efficient. There is already an question about how to do this on windows, but I would like to know I anyone is aware if this is possible under linux. Another thing I already found is key-mon, a little program for screencasts that displays your mouse and keyboard presses on the screen, which would help me achieve what I want with a little bit of python coding by myself.   Hi Folks, For someone with so much Java experience, boy do I feel clueless - thanks in advance for your help in my grocking the present (Feb, 2010) JSP environment. Here's what I am hoping to learn: Do I understand correctly that most people use Apache to "front-end" their Tomcat servers, such that Apache "talks" directly to web clients and "proxies" Tomcat servers? Do I understand correctly that Apache isn't capable of serving JSP directly but requires a server (like Tomcat)? Is there an RPM package for Fedora Core so I don't have to build one myself? Or, does Fedora Core's package installer do a good job on this one from source code? (Some do, some don't!) While I'm here asking questions; Does Tomcat come with a working example that one can start hacking on as a way to get started quickly? If not, got a good suggestion? Thanks folks, RT

• Migrate reports from MS Access to OOo Base

  I'm currently looking at upgrading our office machines from Office XP to Office 2010. For most users the standard edition is fine but just a few of us use Access. There are only a couple of standalone Access databases but the program is used fairly extensively (mostly by myself) as a front end to MySQL. As the cost different between standard and pro versions of Office 2010 is about $170 (AUD) I'm looking at possible alternatives to Access. I'm no huge fan of Open Office but could be convinced to use it if I can find a way to migrate the many reports we currently have in Access. The data is not a problem. So far I've found nothing to suggest this is even possible/practical but perhaps someone here knows otherwise. I'm also open to suggestions for other alternatives to Access but it must be able to produce flexible reports easily. That is the one real strength of Access in my view. Because of its subjective nature I'm making this community wiki.

• Folder Size Column on Explorer on Windows Vista/Seven

  I'm a big fan of FolderSize, but unfortunately it works only on Windows XP. Even reading this and this, I'm not convinced that I cannot to have a column showing the folder size on Windows Explorer. Even with all "problems" FolderSize worked like a charm in WindowsXP. In a sysadmin life, FolderSize is explendid. Before select a lot of folders to send to backup in DVDs, I can check directly in Windows Explorer the size of the folders and get a set of folders with 4.3Gb to burn in a DVD. In another situation, I can view in the root folder the size of the bigger folders in the hard drive and start a good strategy of backup/partitioning/transfer to another drive/etc. If desired, I can tell a lot of another needs that in my sysadmin life I need a tool like FolderSize... There is someone that is actively developing a solution to show folder size on Windows Explorer in Vista/Seven Windows? What the problems that I can face if I develop myself that "add-in" for Windows Explorer?

• Windows - Delayed Write Failed error on USB hard drive

  I've got a new Verbatim 1.5TB USB hard drive (Samsung HD154UI) and I'm finding myself completely unable to fill it. I'm using Windows XP. Whenever I try to copy a load of files over, it works for some time (will copy over between 20 and 90GB) but eventually stops with an error saying "The specified path is too deep" - the specified is not too deep, there's nothing more than 2 dirs deep that I'm copying. A balloon pops up at the bottom saying "Windows - Delayed Write Failed" telling me the data could not be copied. This wouldn't be too bad if I could just restart the transfer, but after this error has happened I can't write anything else to the disk - including if I eject it and then connect it to another machine. It just seems completely locked. The only way I can unlock it is to delete everything that I was copying to it. I've tried various USB cables and copying from different machines, and the same thing keeps happening.

• Not working WEP key in Ubuntu

  This time I've got some problem with connection to the internet from my old laptop with ubuntu, I already had some problems with setting up the radio on my network card but I think it works now since it finds some wireless networks. The problem is that I can't connect to my router via wi-fi even if I'm hundred-percently sure the wepkey I punch there is correct, it works via LAN though. Also, I'm not able to ping myself with 127.0.0.1. I'm sorry to say it but I don't think I can stand this shitness for much longer. Although it's much much faster than Windows it's useless since i can't download any libraries for development. • How to replace emacs keybindings with vim keybindings in OS X GUI-level text fields

  I'm fairly fluent with VIM, but find myself having to use GUI programs (in OS X) and their awkward editing modes more and more frequently for my work. I know that OS X lets you use basic emacs keybindings in most textfields (browser window/bar, etc.). I'm wondering if it's possible to switch the emacs keybindings to vim keybindings for those GUI-level input areas. I understand that it might be possible to do that key-by-key in the keyboard layout preference pane. But that approach seems limited, cumbersome, and not very elegant. I'm thinking--and I may well be wrong here--that since OS X already ships with VIM installed, there should be a way to change a preference file deep in the system that maps VIM instead of emacs keybindings to the GUI text/input areas. Does anyone know if this is a) theoretically possible, or if there's something about how OS X maps emacs keybindings to its GUI interface that would make this impossible; and b) how/where that could be done?

• How do I remove the "Shutdown" menu entry from Gnome's system menu?

  We have a lab with multiple RedHat EL5 machines running the Gnome desktop environment. When developers are done using the machine sometimes they miss the logout button and click the Shutdown button by mistake (easy to do, I've done it myself). Needless to say, for those remoted into the lab it's sometimes devastating. Is there a way to remove the Shutdown entry for all users from the Gnome menu? Note: I do not mean Shutdown on the greeter, but the Shutdown button on the menu drop down that is next to logout, sleep, etc.

• ubuntu: mumble 1.2.2 in Karmic

  Karmic only has mumble 1.1.8, but if I want to connect to a 1.2 server I need to upgrade... So I would like to know how I can upgrade to mumble 1.2.2 without messing myself up for later when I upgrade to 10.04 and beyond... I just want a smooth transition into the next versions of mumble. Is there anyway to upgrade to this newer version and either keep it in the package manager or make it not interfere with the natural upgrades the program will later recieve from the package manager? • URL redirect to a virtual server on a VLAN

  I have a production site, running off 10 servers. I've been given another virtual server on the same network as these 10 servers, to use for testing purposes. This server doesn't have it's own DNS entry. Therefore I need to do a redirect to the site hosted on this virtual server for a sub-domain of the site running on the 10 other servers. So Basically I was wondering how I would configure a sub domain of my production server to point at the Virtual server for testing. I'm guessing I need to modify my site file in /etc/apache2/sites-available and add another virtual host like the following and modify the redirect match: <VirtualHost *> ServerName SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN.com RedirectMatch 301 (.*) **IP ADDRESS** CustomLog /var/log/apache2/SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN.com.access.log combined </VirtualHost> Do I set the redirect match to just the IP on the Virtual server, and then configure another site file in the sites-available directory, which will recption this redirect and point the browser towards the HTML root?   After reading this question about maxing out an SSD I decided to do so myself. My mobo only supports SATA 2 and has two PCIe 2.0 x1 connectors (which promiss up to 500 mb/s). So after some searching I decided to go with this controller from amazon. My Samsung magician benchmark before upgrade (running SATA 2): Now after installing the controller all of the benchmark scores are lower (even though the Samsung Magician app confirms its connected to a SATA 3 port): What can I do to remedy this?   We're already configuring Internet Explorer proxy settings through group policy and it works great. Sadly, I've recently run into multiple issues where those settings are ignored by certain services. I realized that these service have one thing in common. They use WinHTTP, which has its own proxy settings. Now I'm asking myself how to apply those across the whole domain. I realize that I could create a logon script and simply run netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie, but, from experience I know that these settings require a reboot to take effect. So this wouldn't help me at all in a logon script. So, how can I do it?

• How do I get rid of Adobe Download Akamai software on a Mac?

  I installed Adobe's Download Manager Software when I was downloading a CS4 trial. It was called Akamai. I can not seem to get rid of this pesky thing. I have Little Snitch installed so I was annoyed that it showed that this app would phone home for updates every login. I felt this was an unnecessary process I wanted rid of. I've uninstalled it using App Cleaner. Now on login the Akamai app does not produce any Little Snitch prompts. "SoftwareUpdateCheck" does. SoftwareUpdateCheck wants to connect to a950.gi3.akamai.net on TCP 80. SoftwareUpdateCheck is /System/Library/CoreServices/SoftwareUpdate.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck. How do I rid myself of this? Mac OS X 10.6
