• Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

  I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?

• Parse HTTP requests through Wireshark?

  Hi, guys, Is there any way to parse HTTP request data in wireshark? For example, can I expose the request parameters upon an HTTP GET request (being sent by my machine), so that I don't need to read the (sometimes) truncated URL and find them by myself? I was using Tamper Data and Firebug, on my Firefox, to analyse these requests, but they're not as reliable as a stand-alone tool for monitoring my network interface, but wireshark keeps data too raw concerning HTTP flow. If you guys know any other stand-alone tool that does this (must be Linux-compatible), please tell me. Thanks!

• Installing Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu 10.04: A Living Nightmare

  Update #3: Starting over from scratch, shortened this post, decided to re-install a clean copy of Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and go through the walk-through again. So, all the steps go without a hitch. • Cannot activate Windows 8 build 9200

  I'm running an MSDN build 9200 of Windows 8 N (Europe), and thought it was the RTM - I don't go for beta OSes, generally speaking. Anyway, this gold code version runs a watermark, which makes me suspicious. I can't activate it. It just maintains the message: Windows can't activate at the moment. Try activating Windows later. If this issue persists, contact your system administrator or technical support department for assistance. So I phoned myself and the guy at the other end was useless, kept talking over me. Should I be able to activate this build or did I download the wrong version? Luke

• Puppet won't execute command

  Puppet 0.25.4 on ubuntu point blank refuses to execute the following command: exec {"initiate replica set": command => "echo 'rs.initiate()' | mongo", path => ["/usr/bin","/usr/sbin","/bin"], user => "root", require => Class["mongodb"] } I can execute the command as root myself, so I'm guessing perhaps it's an issue with the shell. Unfortunately upgrading puppet isn't an option (and causes other issues anyway). I've tried specifying explicit paths to the binaries instead of relying on the path parameter, and also changing the command to: "bash -c \"echo 'rs.initiate()' | mongo\"" Still doesn't work. Any ideas? I get an error message saying something like "failed to change from notrun to 0"

• Upgrading kernel on Debian server hosting Xen 3.2.1

  I have a physical server running Debian 6 and Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1, and kernal -a says "2.6.26-1-xen-amd64". I have not updated for a long time, because when I run apt-get upgrade, one of the updates is linux-image-2.6-amd64. My understanding was that my kernel needs to have Xen support, will upgrading to this kernel break my dom0? I have myself up against a wall, because I host a VM for a website that isn't mine, so I need the latest security updates, but can't risk taking them offline. Eventually they will move off, and I won't be hosting something I am unqualified to host, but that isn't the point right now.

• How to bypass AllowTCPFowarding=no by installing own forwarder?

  In the man pages for sshd_config, for the AllowTCPForwarding option, it states: AllowTcpForwarding Specifies whether TCP forwarding is permitted. The default is “yes”. Note that disabling TCP forwarding does not improve security unless users are also denied shell access, as they can always install their own forwarders. How do I install my own forwarder? I have a remote server in which I disabled TCPForwarding a long while ago. I would like to "enable" it for myself only, by using my own forwarder, while keeping the forwarding closed to the other users. I've looked around, but cannot seem to find the right pkgs to accomplish this. Can anyone please elaborate? Thanks! Eric

• SSH keys fail for one user

  I just set up a new Debian server. I disabled root SSH and password auth, so you've gotta use a key file. For my primary user, everything works exactly as expected. I used ssh-keygen -t dsa and got myself a public and private key. Put one in authorized keys, put the other in a pem file locally. I wanted to create a user that I can deploy things with, so I did basically the same process. I addusered it, made a .ssh folder, ran ssh-keygen -t dsa (I also tried RSA), put the keys in their appropriate locations. No luck. I'm getting a Permission denied (publickey) error. When I use the exact same keys as the account that works, same error. When I enable password authentication, I can log in via SSH with the password. How do I debug this?

• Setting user calendar permissions on Exchange 2007

  We have Exchange 2007 with about 100 users. I would like to change everyone's free/busy permissions to grant Reviewer status to a specific AD group. I have tried PFDAVAdmin tool but when I commit any changes, they do not affect the users. If I grant myself Reviewer permissions to another user's calendar using the tool, I still cannot view that user's free/busy details, and I also don't show up on the list of people with permissions on that user's Outlook calendar options. It seems like PFDAVAdmin simply appears to do something, but doesn't actually change anything. Is there any other way for me to accomplish what I need to do? Or is there something I may not be doing right with PFDAVAdmin? • ISP doesn't allow incoming connections (i.e., hosting a server) - anyway to get around this using a VPN?

  My ISP, like many today, doesn't allow incoming connections, so if I try to host server software on my home PC, then anyone (even myself) trying to connect to that server software via my public IP address is not able to establish a connection. This becomes a problem because hosting online games is impossible. I do have a VPS Linux box rented; is there any VPN software I could install on it that I could connect to from my home PC, and then anyone connecting to a specific port on that VPS will just have the traffic tunneled to my home PC, allowing me to host games that way? If so, what software do I need (on both my PC and on the VPS), and how do I configure it?

  I stumbled on question 217394 which explains how to copy files sorted alphabetically into one single file. Trying to implement the command myself rendered the following error message: The system cannot find the file specified. The command I am trying to run is here: for /f %i in ('dir /a-d /o-n /b O:\OrdersExport\Order*.txt') do @type %i C:\Users\Admin\Documents\OrderImport.txt The error does not appear if I browsed to the folder in question first: C:\O: C:\cd OrdersImport I simply want one line to copy from destination to that single file. • Make Google chrome with specific user profile as default browser

  Is it possible to set Google chrome with a custom user profile as the default browser? When I set google chrome as the default browser, it picks the "default" user profile as against the custom one I have setup. I tried setting google chrome as default browser after opening it from that particular user profile, but it doesn't seem to have an effect. • mod_deflate enabled for amf?

  coldfusion 8, apache 2.2 running locally on XP pro. sp 3 -- Im trying to get mod_deflate working for amf. I've seen acouple of post that mention this is possible. But I cannot seem to get it to work for myself. eg. http://wadearnold.com/blog/flash/gzip-compression-is-not-part-of-amf the compression is working for other minetypes I've added to the AddOutputFilterByType so the deflate is working correctly. ive tried the following minetypes; application/x-amf, application-x/amf, application/amf. tho application/x-amf should be the one. Basically just added the minetype to AddOutputFilterByType thats all? Am I missing a setting?

• Couple folders went 'access denied' in Windows. Why and how to fix?

  So, after a failed Windows 7 install, I put XP back on, and had a adrenaline shot when I got an access denied on a couple of my backed up folders. I already tried the instructions here at Microsoft KB, but it didn't fix it. I did add myself with full permissions on the main section of the Security tab, though, and that gave me access into the folder (I could do it in XP Home because of the Windows NT SP4 Security Configuration Manager). However, it appears some subfolders are still inaccessible. Two questions, then. Why exactly did this happen and how do I fix it?

• Config xampp never to cache pages from localhost

  Hello everyone: I am not a webmaster, and that was exactly the reason why I installed XAMPP 1.7.2 on Windows XP SP2 instead of manually configuring Apache, MySQL and PHP to cooperate each other. Now I am having to problem to disable caching pages from localhost. Some suggested just force the browser not to cache, using Firefox web developer bar or something similar; but I feel it would be better if I could configure the Apache server in XAMPP to never allow pages from localhost to be cached. I guess this is done somewhere in httpd.conf? LoadModule cache_module modules/mod_cache.so Would this module be helpful in this case? Doc here : mod_cache I am not very sure this would resolve the problem. Could anyone confirm this approach feasible? I'd like to work it out myself, given the fact that I am on the right track... • If I split my harddrive, will a system restore delete it?

  I split my 1TB HD from C drive and called it A. I put some files there to back up. I have now come to a point where I need to run a system restore with the discs that came with my computer. If I do a system restore and wipe C drive clean, will I lose the part of the hard drive that I split or will it remain intact and my files uncorrupted? This is a partition I created with windows myself, and dragged files over to it. Thanks!

• Is there a test to see if hardware virtualization (vmx / xvm) are presently enabled within a Linux session?

  I'm writing procedures for configuring VirtualBox support for 64-bit SMP guests, which requires hardware virtualization suppot (VTx/Intel, AMD-V/AMD). I have successfully configured this myself, however I'd like the procedure to be clear. sed -ne '/^flags/s/^.*: //p' /proc/cpuinfo | egrep -q '(vmx|svm)' && echo Has hardware virt || echo No HW virt ... shows if the CPU is capable. I've still got to go enable the feature in BIOS. Any way to test from within Linux to see that this is no or not? Thanks.

When i enquired them they said that they will enable to people who personally request for that option. And they said it is a matter of 2 minutes work and asked for my control panel username and password. They said that it is just updating the php.ini for my account. So i want to know how to do it myself. If that could be done by them in 2 minutes then why cant a developer. • After restart desktop totally black, taskbar visible, can't click items in Windows Explorer

  Situation: Windows Vista, latest updates. After restarting to complete an installation, I find myself looking at a totally black windows desktop without any icons. The start menu and taskbar, including quickstart icons, appears. Some, but not all task bar tray icons appear. The systems seems stable. When I open Windows Explorer and click "desktop" in the folder treeview, the cursor immediately jumps back to the previously selected item. No error. Same when clicking on my user's profile or my documents. When I try "save as" in, say, Notepad, nothing happens, the dialog box (which defaults to "my documents") doesn't even show. Again, no error. Nothing serious afaict in the event log. Typing something in Start Search shows "Search failed to initialize". Most programs, including Internet Explorer, Firefox etc work as expected. Anybody ever encountered such abomination?

• How can I adapt a Dell 2001FP stand for use on newer Dell monitors?

  I find myself really disappointed with how little vertical adjustment newer Dell LCD's have. I retiring a malfunctioning Dell 2001FP. The stand on the 2001FP allows over 6 inches of vertical adjustment. Compare this to my newer monitors, a 2005FP and a SW22209, both of which allow at most 2 inches of vertical adjustment. So while the Dell 2001FP monitor is shot, the stand is not. Is there anyway to fit the stand onto the SW2209 or the 2005FP? The 2001FP stand seems to have an odd plate with three tabs on the top edge. Can I replace this?

• How to view only Mail on shared email account?

  I have a support account which I should have access to in my Outlook 2010, however, since changing from 2003, the situation has become unusual. I used to be able to just view shared mail items in a seperate account, without it having the Calendar, Tasks and Reminders popping up in my face all hours of the day. Now, if I add the account, I get upwards of 60 task reminders that are not my personal account, and that clog up my Reminders window and task list. Is there a way to show only my Tasks and Reminders in Outlook 2010? I've tried the Advanced Filter option on the Tasks list, but if I set it to show only things from or to myself, everything disappears, or nothing disappears. I tried looking in the email account settings for something like 'Read email only' or something to do with only showing some of the modules of outlook, but it was useless.

I would like to know the expenses involved, including: electricity costs (greater than light bulb?) internet costs (will I have to upgrade my internet? Or is 3-5Mbps upload speed fine for a web server with medium amount of traffic? Would I have to get a separate internet connection?) other unknown expenses Consider that I will configure the web server myself, so that is not an expense. Also consider that I already have a computer (year-old Dell laptop, 15R) to use to be dedicated as the web server.

  I just got myself a wifi capable cell phone, but I dont have a wireless internet at home. I do have a wired unlimited internet connection on my computer, and I wonder whether there is any gadget that I can plug into my computer (maybe at the usb port?) with which I can turn my computer into a wifi access point? I mean, a dongle or something which will enable me to connect my phone to my computer's internet through wi-fi? Also, I dont know anything about networking, so would it be hard for me to set up a secure wifi point? Thank you for reading this question through. • Virtual Box fails my OSes :(

  I have a little problem with Virtual Box latest version in which i have installed Mint (also latest version).During creation of a new vdi partition I chose settings as default, that is, I don't create any tiny partitions myself. The installation works. But later while the new OS is running (not in Live mode) I try installing/updating new software available, the system automatically fails, it reports an error of DISKFULL, I close the message box then power off my system. Later on I can't boot it up again anymore. It hangs with a black screen and the PAUSE status. I have no idea why. I have installed 2 OSes and both fail at the same error. I doubt something is not right about the current version of VBox. Thank you . My host OS is Windows7 and my Clients are Mint and CentOS
