• How to analyze a wifi network with many devices

  My friend has a wifi network with an x-box, a wii, a playstation, and two nintendo portables. She's also got 2-3 PC's and a network printer. She's got a wifi repeater as well. She claims that she didn't have any issues for months with everything working together, and suddenly everything stopped disconnecting. I haven't been over there yet - wanted to figure out the best way to diagnose the thing. I asked her to send me the stats on the booster and the modem, etc: The booster is Netgear serial #2ac2195506b95 The modem is Cisco Linksys e1500 #10910c12129103 We have a sprint router thru centurylink and they said it is working fine 660 series

• Accesing internet with Host-Only network VirtualBox

  I have two VMs in my VirtualBox. Both are FreeBSD and should communicate between each other. I have created network with DHCP enabled and set like this: Server Address 10.10.10.1 Server Mask 255.255.255.0 Lower Address Bound 10.10.10.100 Upper Address Bound 10.10.10.200 My VMs are pinging each other and getting right ip adress. This is what I must have and can´t change. Now I want to access internet from one VM and I found that I must use two network cards but I don´t know how to set the second one. I am new with VirtualBox and this stuff so if you count with this in you answer I would appreciate that. And I have Windows 8 as host system if it´s matter.

• Allowing access to MPD from local network

  I have successfully installed MPD (Music Player Daemon) on my desktop computer. Everything works fine when the client runs on the same machine as the server. Now I would like to access MPD from my laptop computer which is connected (wirelessly) to the local network. In order to allow access to MPD from any computer on the local network I have added this line to /etc/hosts.allow: mpd: .local and restarted MPD. Still I get the message "error: Connection refused" when I try to access MPD with MPC (Music Player Client) from my laptop. Any clues or troubleshooting hints?

The primary requiremen is that I need to be able to forward ports to my desktop. How would I achieve this? Is there something like "double port forwarding"?   Hi all, here's my case, I have set up a share in a virtual windows server 2008 R2, the server is hosted by GoDaddy my question is, how do I access the server's public folders, I need to open a file locally (on the client) and to do that I need the server to show up in my Network locations, I have the right credentials and have created a special group that has access to the particular folder that I'm sharing the problem is I don't know how to add the server to my network locations. I have tried VPN Connection but it is my understanding that it cannot be done since it is virtual share server. Any help is trully appreciated.

• Two routers on the same network

  My ISP has supplied me with a modem/router all in one and it isn't very good. It loses its settings and dies frequently. So I have another router in my apartment (Linksys wrt310n) that is connected to the modem via LAN-LAN port connections. I want to give my Linksys router the DHCP role and also have the ISP modem DMZ everything to the Linksys router. I want to be able to have all computers connected to both routers on the same network as well. I have been able to make it so that the Linksys has a DMZ to it from the ISP modem, but ISP modem LAN port - Linksys WAN port, so they were on different networks. Is there a way to have it so that both of them are on the same network but the Linksys router handles DHCP and port forwarding?

• Disable ALTQ for internal network traffic

  I currently have a FreeBSD 8.2 media server set up on my LAN that I use to stream my music from. I also have an SSH login that I use to do file transfers to and from this server remotely. I would like to set up ALTQ (and have gotten this working) to limit my outgoing bandwidth from the server for SSH traffic. However, configuring ALTQ this way is also limiting my internal traffic (and thus interfering with my music streaming) since I am only using a single network interface.   Can I set my browser or download a special application to log/download everything that is going through network while browsing a site? When I open a website in Firefox, it downloads the files to temporary folders, but I need everything, and by everything I mean full Ajax request logging, image downloading...etc Every file that is downloaded while browsing sites (and not temporary, I need them later, so It should log and categorize it somehow). Otherwise: I want to automatically save everything you can see in the browser's network tab (after pressing F12) and not just the response, also need the information about what it sent and what it got back.

  I want to set up a fictional network configuration for a school in my neighborhood. They have about 50 computers altogether, 2X20 in computer rooms for students and another 10 scattered around for various professors. They should all access the internet through a dedicated Linux router machine. What they would like is to have domain names for those three computer groups. Lab1, Lab2 and Professors. The computers in Lab2 and Lab1 should have static ip and should all be named by numbers. So there should be 1@Lab1, 2@Lab1.... etc. And the Professors network should have a DHCP, with authentication. Is it an ok solution to have all these functions on a single server? (The one which will be used as a router) Do I have to set a local DNS for domain naming? Do the host names for Lab computers have to be set on the clients, or can they be automatically assigned?

• trouble loggin into a Mac share from a Windows PC on the network

  I have this mixed network and usually log into the Macs from the Windows XP home machines and vice versa. I have no real networking knowledge, things just seem to work, more or less, with the default settings. Now I've got a new Snow Leopard Mac with a shared folder (added the user names of the Windows users at the sharing preferences) and the trouble is some machines can open the share and others can't. I can't see the difference. It feels like some Windows machines have a "cache" and won't ask for the share password, just deny access. I can also see old shares proposed at the Windows "add network place wizard".

  I am trying to install Xen on my Fedora box. Dom0 image has network connectivity. But when I try to create a DomU, it does not have network connectivity. I want to be able to run in bridged mode. My question is there any evidence that this is a problem that arises with any significant frequency in modern cloud IAAS services e.g.; EC2, Azure, Rackspace. Is it a problem which, despite being a theoretical roadblock in constructing idealised distributed systems is, in fact, a non-issue for all practical concerns?   Hello, my university just limited bandwidth to 512 kbps (that's 64 kB/s!) for each connection. I was thinking to make multiple connection to the same wireless network (called "internet"), is this possible under Windows 7? I know it's possible to connect to more than one WLAN through the "hostednetwork" concept in netsh: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=xxxxx netsh wlan start hostednetwork However this method doesn't seem to work, I don't know if it's due to the authentication method (through certificates while hostednetwork seems to support just a "passphrase") or because I'm already connected to that network with the same MAC. Can you think to some tool able to do this?

• Image archiving on network folders.

  Our company uses Symantec Enterprise Vault to archive network folders and files, presumably to save on disk space. I can't see any other benefits. Our company is an architectural firm, and the problem our users face is locating particular images in network folders. Because all the files are archived, Windows Explorer is unable to generate image thumbnails. Each image needs to be individually restored from archive by double-click before it can be viewed. This is a big time-waster for our architects. Symantec say there is no workaround for this. Does anyone know of an alternative we could use for archiving images? Alternatively, some batch utility to create and maintain a thumbs.db file in each folder? Thanks.

  I own a small private security services business. Some of my clients require 2-10 security officers per location. I'm trying to think outside the box in order to solve my communications problem. I'd rather not buy or lease hf radios or voip systems at the current rates. • Setting up virtual network in VMware workstation

  I am playing around with VMware workstation and am trying to set up a small virtual network. I am having a little trouble with this I hope somebody can help me out. I want to have all the different virtual machines to have different internal IP adresses so I can ping them SSH etc, from within my windows machine. I am directly connected to the internet without a router, so using a bridged connection does not seem to work. The other options NAT and host-only do not seem to work also. I think i need to create a new adapter. I am testing this out with a virtual image of linux debain 5.0 lenny. I have WMware Workstation 7 with virtual network editor. Can anyone guide me in the right direction.

Domain with specific port is pointing on computer in local network (fixed ip) like: mydomain.com:87 -> 192.168.1.1 Local machine is running on win server 2008. Everything works fine on local network. But mydomain.com:87 is not working. Are there extra settings for win server to allow connection from outside? (Firewall is turned off while searching for working result.)

• Mitigating the 'firesheep' attack at the network layer?

  What are the sysadmin's thoughts on mitigating the 'firesheep' attack for servers they manage? Firesheep is a new firefox extension that allows anyone who installs it to sidejack session it can discover. It does it's discovery by sniffing packets on the network and looking for session cookies from known sites. It is relatively easy to write plugins for the extension to listen for cookies from additional sites. From a systems/network perspective, we've discussed the possibility of encrypting the whole site, but this introduces additional load on servers and screws with site-indexing, assets and general performance. One option we've investigated is to use our firewalls to do SSL Offload, but as I mentioned earlier, this would require all of the site to be encrypted. What's the general thoughts on protecting against this attack vector? I've asked a similar question on StackOverflow, however, it would be interesting to see what the systems engineers thought.

  my computer can catch the signal for many Access Points for the same network, while the network has problem with internet connection in some APs and it's working in others "all APs have the same SSID" Please advice if as i user i can force my computer to connect with specific AP neither than to go with the one with higher power (through MAC adress or IP)?. • Accessing localhost:8080 through local network

  I'm developing a Python WSGI website. I'm running a Paste development server on my Mac (OS X 10.7) on port 8080. I want to test the website on some other devices and OSs I have connected to the local network (Windows 7 VM, iPad, iPhone, etc.), but am having trouble. I turned on Web Sharing, and am able to access that (port 80) without a problem on all my devices. Port 8080 still doesn't work. An excerpt from my Paste configuration: [server:main] use = egg:waitress#main host = 127.0.0.1 port = 8080 The OS X firewall (Settings - Security - Firewall) is off. I have no other firewall software installed. My network is through a Linksys WRT160N router. I haven't done much with the settings, so most of them are at their defaults. I've been Googling all morning, but can't find a solution.

I have read that this is possible through indexing, but to get through the indexing steps I need to make files available offline. This network drive I speak of has about 2tb of files on it. How in the heck can I keep all this straight. I imagine there would be syncing errors everywhere if I were to make all of these files available offline. Not to mention not all files being current due to the large amounts of files. Anyone have suggestions?

• connecting to a network using route command

  I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers. • Accessing our Intranet from outside our Network - WITHOUT VPN

  We just upgraded our company intranet from an IIS based, ASP (poorly written) server/code base to a Windows Server 2008 r2 (Apache/MySQL/PHP) server. The old server allowed users to login to intranet.xxx.org using there AD user/pass which then lead them to the company Intranet from basically anywhere they had Internet access. We want to mimic that functionality (or change it to something more secure) with the new setup. This was seemingly setup for off-site employees running on a state network. The state network does not allow VPN, therefor, we needed a way to allow those employees access to the Intranet. So, how do we go about allowing users to login from the outside world and gain access to our Intranet?
