• Package names - impl v internal

  In my time of digging around Java APIs I have come across both impl and internal packages. Up until now I never really thought about the difference - as with all enterprisey Java apps, I figured they just meant that "actual implementation in here; you (API user) should be really using the interface. Go away." A little bit of digging around Stack Overflow seems to suggest that the internal package at least can have some security placed around it. So, what is the difference? I don't think it is a matter of taste because I have seen APIs with both.

• Filter Empty Directories in Package Explorer View

  Is there a way in eclipse to filter/hide empty directory trees in the package explorer view? This is different than filtering directories like '.svn' or maven's target, or filtering empty packages. It's more trying to clean up empty directories trees that show up as a result of filter rules. Context- We have a generic project in our workspace that uses filters to ignore non text based files(mp3s, jpgs, etc). It allows us to quickly edit our files in eclipse. The problem is because of the filters there are a lot of empty folders present. If eclipse can ignore any empty folders due to filters it would make the project cleaner.

• MSV1_0 Subauthentication Package Registration

  Hi; I'm trying to register a simple MSV1_0 subauthentication package for MS Windows Server 2003. I created a dll which implements required functions described in MSDN. I copied my dll to system32 folder. After that, I created a registry key Auth255 (I also tried Auth128) with a REG_SZ value ,which specifies my dll name, to this location; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0. I expect that it will create a test.txt file for debugging puposes when the dll is called, but it doesn't create the file. How can I make this work? • silently execute a MSI package from C#

  Newbie question, let me try and make this as clear as possible. I have a program that needs to silently execute a msi package (well multiple but that's not the problem) The MSI packages are contained in a folder located in the same directory as my program. I've given it a simple name of "InstallFiles" for the time being. I'm not keen on using the full path name eg. C:\my program\another directory\another directory etc because it'll be put on multiple PC's, old and new, in which case the drive letter can change. So far I have: install.StartInfo.FileName = "msiexec"; install.StartInfo.Arguments = "/i F:\\InstallFiles\\JRE.msi"; install.Start(); install.WaitForExit(); However, when its launched it only gives me the Windows Installer switch information and then terminates, how do I get it to run and how would I go about changing the file path?

• Nuget and Source Control Files to Exclude?

  I know I should be using nuget more but at this point I don't completely understand the nuances so I still tend to either get source and build the project, then reference the project, or I create my own "dlls" folder and hand copy the dll's in. As part of my learning process, I'm trying to understand what is critical and what is not when using nuget. For example, I've done install-package restsharp and now when I check into source control, I get files like "packages/RestSharp.103.4/lib/net4/RestSharp.xml". I'm assuming that nuget will help me with upgrading and such and it needs to have certain meta data type files. My question is: Should I be ignoring any or all files in the "packages" directory? If so, what and why. Thanks

• R.layout.main error, no solutions have worked

  I am just beginning to develop for Android. The tutorial book I am using uses the code below, but, put simply, it does not work. As I've searched for an answer, I find that none of the solutions people say have rid them of this error have worked for me. Here is a list of methods that did not work. -Cleaning: It just said it couldn't clean until I resolved the error. -Building the Project: It built it, but the error did not go away. -Deleting import R: The error did not go away. -Renaming import R to import me.package.R: The error persisted. Here is the code that is generating the error. public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); } Can anyone help me out?

• Several modules in a package importing one common module

  I am writing a python package. I am using the concept of plugins - where each plugin is a specialization of a Worker class. Each plugin is written as a module (script?) and spawned in a separate process. Because of the base commonality between the plugins (e.g. all extend a base class 'Worker'), The plugin module generally looks like this: import commonfuncs def do_work(data): # do customised work for the plugin print 'child1 does work with %s' % data In C/C++, we have include guards, which prevent a header from being included more than once. Do I need something like that in Python, and if yes, how may I make sure that commonfuncs is not 'included' more than once?

  Hi experts, I have a vPro client computer with AMT 4.0. It was importeed successfully via the Import OOB Computers wizard, and after sending a "Hello- packet" it became provisioned. (The SCCM GUI displays AMT Status: Provisioned). The question around, “Why is SQL Server using up all the memory and not releasing even when idle?” Well, the answer can be long and with the release of SQL Server 2014, this got even more complicated. This release of SQL Server 2014 has the option of introducing In-Memory OLTP which is completely new concept and our dependency on memory has increased multifold. In reality, nothing much changes but we have memory optimized objects (Tables and Stored Procedures) additional which are residing completely in memory and improving performance. As a DBA, it is humanly impossible to get a hang of all the innovations and the new features introduced in the next version. This reports is available only from SQL Server 2014 onwards because the feature was introduced in SQL Server 2014. Earlier versions of SQL Server Management Studio would not show the report in the list. If we try to launch the report on the database which is not having In-Memory File group defined, then we would see the message in report. To demonstrate, I have created new fresh database called MemoryOptimizedDB with no special file group. Here is the query used to identify whether a database has memory-optimized file group or not. SELECT TOP(1) 1 FROM sys.filegroups FG WHERE FG.[type] = 'FX' Once we add filegroup using below command, we would see different version of report. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] CONTAINS MEMORY_OPTIMIZED_DATA GO The report is still empty because we have not defined any Memory Optimized table in the database.  Total allocated size is shown as 0 MB. Now, let’s add the folder location into the filegroup and also created few in-memory tables. We have used the nomenclature of IMO to denote “InMemory Optimized” objects. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILE ( NAME = N'MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO', FILENAME = N'E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQL\DATA\MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO') TO FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] GO You may have to change the path based on your SQL Server configuration. Below is the script to create the table. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO --Drop table if it already exists. IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.SQLAuthority','U') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority GO CREATE TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority ( ID INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Name CHAR(500)  COLLATE Latin1_General_100_BIN2 NOT NULL DEFAULT 'Pinal', CONSTRAINT PK_SQLAuthority_ID PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (ID), INDEX hash_index_sample_memoryoptimizedtable_c2 HASH (Name) WITH (BUCKET_COUNT = 131072) ) WITH (MEMORY_OPTIMIZED = ON, DURABILITY = SCHEMA_AND_DATA) GO As soon as above script is executed, table and index both are created. If we run the report again, we would see something like below. Notice that table memory is zero but index is using memory. This is due to the fact that hash index needs memory to manage the buckets created. So even if table is empty, index would consume memory. More about the internals of how In-Memory indexes and tables work will be reserved for future posts. Now, use below script to populate the table with 10000 rows INSERT INTO SQLAuthority VALUES (DEFAULT) GO 10000 Here is the same report after inserting 1000 rows into our InMemory table.    There are total three sections in the whole report. Total Memory consumed by In-Memory Objects Pie chart showing memory distribution based on type of consumer – table, index and system. Details of memory usage by each table. The information about all three is taken from one single DMV, sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats This DMV contains memory usage statistics for both user and system In-Memory tables. If we query the DMV and look at data, we can easily notice that the system tables have negative object IDs.  So, to look at user table memory usage, below is the over-simplified version of query. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO SELECT OBJECT_NAME(OBJECT_ID), * FROM sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats WHERE OBJECT_ID > 0 GO This report would help DBA to identify which in-memory object taking lot of memory which can be used as a pointer for designing solution. I am sure in future we will discuss at lengths the whole concept of In-Memory tables in detail over this blog. • SQL SERVER – 2011 – Clipboard Ring – CTRL+SHIFT+V

  While I was writing my earlier post SQL SERVER – 2011 – Multi-Monitor SSMS Windows, I found out that there is one more similar feature which existed in Visual Studio is also now part of SQL Server 2011 (Denali). The feature is called clipboard ring feature. This is how it works. Select Multiple object one by one using regular CTRL + X. Now instead of pasting using CTRL+V use CTRL+SHIFT+V. Well, you will see that that pasted value is rotating based on what you have earlier selected in CTRL+V. I was really happy as I think this is one of the feature of VS, I really wanted SSMS to have. • I've filed an ITP bug on bugs.debian.org - now how do I get the package into Ubuntu?

  I've written a development library that I would like to include in the Ubuntu archives. From what I understand, the best way to do this is to first get the package into Debian and then request a package sync. Here is the ITP bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=691467 Now my question is simply... what do I do now? Looking at this page, I see horrifying things like "419 days in preparation" and "last activity 404 days ago". I get the impression that getting a package into Debian is a slow process. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? I've tried to do as much work as I can to smooth out the process - I've got a branch with Debian packaging (which gets by Lintian without any errors).

• SQL SERVER – SSMS: Top Object and Batch Execution Statistics Reports

  The month of June till mid of July has been the fever of sports. First, it was Wimbledon Tennis and then the Soccer fever was all over. There is a huge number of fan followers and it is great to see the level at which people sometimes worship these sports. Being an Indian, I cannot forget to mention the India tour of England later part of July. Following these sports and as the events unfold to the finals, there are a number of ways the statisticians can slice and dice the numbers. Cue from soccer I can surely say there is a team performance against another team and then there is individual member fairs against a particular opponent. Such statistics give us a fair idea to how a team in the past or in the recent past has fared against each other, head-to-head stats during World cup and during other neutral venue games. All these statistics are just pointers. In reality, they don’t reflect the calibre of the current team because the individuals who performed in each of these games are totally different (Typical example being the Brazil Vs Germany semi-final match in FIFA 2014). So at times these numbers are misleading. It is worth investigating and get the next level information. Similar to these statistics, SQL Server Management studio is also equipped with a number of reports like a) Object Execution Statistics report and b) Batch Execution Statistics reports. As discussed in the example, the team scorecard is like the Batch Execution statistics and individual stats is like Object Level statistics. The analogy can be taken only this far, trust me there is no correlation between SQL Server functioning and playing sports – It is like I think about diet all the time except while I am eating. Performance – Batch Execution Statistics Let us view the first report which can be invoked from Server Node -> Reports -> Standard Reports -> Performance – Batch Execution Statistics. Most of the values that are displayed in this report come from the DMVs sys.dm_exec_query_stats and sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle). This report contains 3 distinctive sections as outline below.   Section 1: This is a graphical bar graph representation of Average CPU Time, Average Logical reads and Average Logical Writes for individual batches. The Batch numbers are indicative and the details of individual batch is available in section 3 (detailed below). Section 2: This represents a Pie chart of all the batches by Total CPU Time (%) and Total Logical IO (%) by batches. This graphical representation tells us which batch consumed the highest CPU and IO since the server started, provided plan is available in the cache. Section 3: This is the section where we can find the SQL statements associated with each of the batch Numbers. This also gives us the details of Average CPU / Average Logical Reads and Average Logical Writes in the system for the given batch with object details. Expanding the rows, I will also get the # Executions and # Plans Generated for each of the queries. Performance – Object Execution Statistics The second report worth a look is Object Execution statistics. This is a similar report as the previous but turned on its head by SQL Server Objects. The report has 3 areas to look as above. Section 1 gives the Average CPU, Average IO bar charts for specific objects. The section 2 is a graphical representation of Total CPU by objects and Total Logical IO by objects. The final section details the various objects in detail with the Avg. CPU, IO and other details which are self-explanatory. At a high-level both the reports are based on queries on two DMVs (sys.dm_exec_query_stats and sys.dm_exec_sql_text) and it builds values based on calculations using columns in them: SELECT * FROM    sys.dm_exec_query_stats s1 CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle) AS s2 WHERE   s2.objectid IS NOT NULL AND DB_NAME(s2.dbid) IS NOT NULL ORDER BY  s1.sql_handle; This is one of the simplest form of reports and in future blogs we will look at more complex reports. I truly hope that these reports can give DBAs and developers a hint about what is the possible performance tuning area. As a closing point I must emphasize that all above reports pick up data from the plan cache. If a particular query has consumed a lot of resources earlier, but plan is not available in the cache, none of the above reports would show that bad query. • SQL SERVER – Replace a Column Name in Multiple Stored Procedure all together

  I receive a lot of emails every day. I try to answer each and every email and comments on Facebook and Twitter. I prefer communication on social media as this gives opportunities to others to read the questions and participate along with me. There is always some question which everyone likes to read and remember. Here is one of the questions which I received in email. I believe the same question will be there any many developers who are beginning with SQL Server. I decided to blog about it so everyone can read it and participate. “I am beginner in SQL Server. I have a very interesting situation and need your help. I am beginner to SQL Server and that is why I do not have access to the production server and I work entirely on the development server. The project I am working on is also in the infant stage as well. In product I had to create a multiple tables and every table had few columns. Later on I have written Stored Procedures using those tables. During a code review my manager has requested to change one of the column which I have used in the table. As per him the naming convention was not accurate. Now changing the columname in the table is not a big issue. I figured out that I can do it very quickly either using T-SQL script or SQL Server Management Studio. The real problem is that I have used this column in nearly 50+ stored procedure. This looks like a very mechanical task. I believe I can go and change it in nearly 50+ stored procedure but is there a better solution I can use. Someone suggested that I should just go ahead and find the text in system table and update it there. Is that safe solution? If not, what is your solution. In simple words, How to replace a column name in multiple stored procedure efficiently and quickly? Please help me here with keeping my experience and non-production server in mind.” Well, I found this question very interesting. Honestly I would have preferred if this question was asked on my social media handles (Facebook and Twitter) as I am very active there and quite often before I reach there other experts have already answered this question. Anyway I am now answering the same question on the blog so all of us can participate here and come up with an appropriate answer. Here is my answer - “My Friend, I do not advice to touch system table. Please do not go that route. It can be dangerous and not appropriate. The issue which you faced today is what I used to face in early career as well I still face it often. There are two sets of argument I have observed – there are people who see no value in the name of the object and name objects like obj1, obj2 etc. There are sets of people who carefully chose the name of the object where object name is self-explanatory and almost tells a story. I am not here to take any side in this blog post – so let me go to a quick solution for your problem. Note: Following should not be directly practiced on Production Server. It should be properly tested on development server and once it is validated they should be pushed to your production server with your existing deployment practice. The answer is here assuming you have regular stored procedures and you are working on the Development NON Production Server. Go to Server Note >> Databases >> DatabaseName >> Programmability >> Stored Procedure Now make sure that Object Explorer Details are open (if not open it by clicking F7). You will see the list of all the stored procedures there. Now you will see a list of all the stored procedures on the right side list. Select either all of them or the one which you believe are relevant to your query. Now… Right click on the stored procedures >> SELECT DROP and CREATE to >> Now select New Query Editor Window or Clipboard. Paste the complete script to a new window if you have selected Clipboard option. Now press Control+H which will bring up the Find and Replace Screen. In this screen insert the column to be replaced in the “Find What”box and new column name into “Replace With” box. Now execute the whole script. As we have selected DROP and CREATE to, it will created drop the old procedure and create the new one. Another method would do all the same procedure but instead of DROP and CREATE manually replace the CREATE word with ALTER world. There is a small advantage in doing this is that if due to any reason the error comes up which prevents the new stored procedure to be created you will have your old stored procedure in the system as it is. “ Well, this was my answer to the question which I have received. • What must be done to allow a development team to minimize difficulties as new team members are added?

  I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

• How to display reboot required user notification after installing a custom package in linux?

  After installing a custom package I should force a reboot of the system. I looked at couple of solutions to this use notify-send to display user notification followed by a reboot command, which did work as planned. But the user notification is only shown when I install the package from command line and not when I installed through Software Center. I came across some posts where they suggested adding the following to the postinst script [ -x /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required ] && \ /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required || true Tried including the above in the postinst script but all it does is updating the two files /var/run/reboot-required.pkgs and /var/run/reboot-required with restart information. It neither displayed user-notification nor rebooted the system after package is installed. Is there a way to display reboot required user notification in Ubuntu/Fedora/Open SUSE ?

• Task ownership with Wordpress - CSS - Designer or Developer?

  We have a dispute regarding who owns which tasks when it comes to the CSS on our live site. Our designer argues that he is not responsible to log-in to word press and modify the css or use ftp for any changes because that's not his job description while developer argues that since it is css, it belongs to designer and that he is to update the changes to the server and then compare and correct the output. I'd like experienced people working in professional development environment to put a light on this scenario. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, or is there a separate forum for business development or project management specific questions?

• Who should determine team size?

  Developers, managers, or customers? I was recently involved in a situation where I felt like the customers were arbitrarily demanding for more developers on a team which already had too many developers. They were scared the project was going to be late (and it probably will be). Personally, I was scared we were going to fulfill Brook's Law. The group of programmers already lacked in-depth business knowledge, and some were even new to the technology (.NET), yet the customer wanted to add more developers who had even less business knowledge. The impression was that this would make the project get done quicker. I started wondering if the customer, who is extremely bright, but presumably knows little about IT project management, should really be the one determining team size.
