  • What performance indicators can I use to convince management that I need my development PC upgraded?

    At work, my PC is slow. I feel that I can be way more productive if I just wasn't waiting for Visual Studio and everything else to respond. My PC isn't bad (dual-core, 3GB of RAM), but there is a lot of corporate software and whatnot to slow everything down and sometimes lock it up. Now, some developers have begun getting Windows 7 machines with 8 GB of RAM. Of course, I start salivating at this. However, I was told that I "had to justify" why I should get a new machine. I can think of a lot of different things, but I am curious as to what every one else on SO would have to say. NOTE: Ideally, these reasons should be specifically related to .NET development in Visual Studio on a Windows machine. This isn't a "how can I make my machine faster" question.

    Hi Folks, this is like a complement for Assets Management, database or versioning system?. I am wondering about how to separate development, specially programmers assets from production assets? For example, if we keep all the assets on the same repository, how do you keep with programmers assets and final game assets? Do you keep a separate directory for each of those, allowing duplicates? Or do you use some fancy scheme for striping out the "development" and "test" assets from final build?

    I've searched high and low for a good resource for learning the Linux command line. I've found a handful of separate resources, but none that really can assist in web server management. I'm currently learning through trial an error with 'man' pages, along with Google.     Is it just me, or does expanding the list of databases in SQL Server 2008 Management Studio take significantly more time than expanding the list of databases in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio? If it isn't just me, is there an explanation for this behavior? Whatever it is doing in the background that makes it take longer, can we turn that off? Is it configurable? I know, it seems trivial, but I am perpetually being surprised at how long this takes.

I need to be able to: Specify html templates that can be included/excluded in different builds for the same file Package the website in a zip Optionally override some modules (requirejs is used for modules) as they are device specific Publish to an FTP server Whilst I can do all of this manually it can be error prone.

  • Can reprepro accept a new version of a package into the repository?

    I have installed a package into my own debian package repository like so: $ sudo reprepro -b /var/packages/ubuntu includedeb maverick my-package_0.8-0_all.deb my-package_0.8-0_all.deb: component guessed as 'main' Exporting indices... I have installed my package on a few machines using apt-get install. I have now added new features to my software and would like to add a new minor version of my package to the repository so that I may update my machines using apt-get upgrade. I try to do this like so: $ sudo reprepro -b /var/packages/ubuntu includedeb maverick my-package_0.9-0_all.deb my-package_0.9-0_all.deb: component guessed as 'main' Skipping inclusion of 'my-package' '1.0-0' in 'maverick|main|i386', as it has already '1.0-0'. Skipping inclusion of 'my-package' '1.0-0' in 'maverick|main|amd64', as it has already '1.0-0'. It looks like I need to tell reprepro that this is a new version of the same package but I have no idea how to do this. I have read the reprepro man page several times and searched on the net for a couple of hours but I have not found any answers. Am I missing something? Many thanks.
