  • Estimate compressed file size in tar.gz

    I've got a set of .tar.gz files, which are duplicity backup files (either full backups or incremental ones). I'd like to compute which directories take the most space on backups. This will most probably be a different figure to calculating which directories take the most space on a live filesystem because I need to account for how often are files changing (and therefore taking space on incremental backups) and how compressible are files. I know that while many other archive formats store compressed files as different entities inside the archive file, .tar.gz files do not, and therefore it is impossible to get an exact amount of storage taken in the archive by a single file after compression. Are there any tools to calculate at least some estimates?

  • Should you disable page file with SSD?

    I've been reading this question, and it has a lot of great information. But assuming you have more than enough ram, I think page file should be disabled on SSD to extend the life time. I know you would lose the core dump on crash, but not many people need that information. From my understand without a page file as you reach the limit of your ram that might trigger thrashing on disk. But for SSDs there is no concept of thrashing, reads are fast. What do you guys think?

    I run a website Cucumbertown with an initial pay load of nearly 9KB zipped. All my js is delayed loaded with requirejs and modernizer is the only exception. Now all my webpages are Nginx cached and only 10-15% hits go to the backend proxy. And the cache is invalidated by logged in users as proxy_cache_bypass. So for an anonymous user its nearly always a cache hit. I have some basic OS tuning with default via ip dev eth0 initcwnd 15 net.ipv4.tcp_slow_start_after_idle 0 Despite an all cache & large initcwnd my pages still take 2.5 – 3 seconds. I have a yslow score of And page speed at Are there strategies that can help deliver webpages even faster than this? Deliver pages at 1+ second time for 10KB payload? Notes: My servers run of a fairly good data center from Linode at Fremont.

    Since High Definition video came out on all the online sites it has changed the default aspect ratio of the player from 4:3 to 16:9. This means that for people posting SD video you have to resize some of your videos to get them to fit right. For example, NTSC DVD quality (aka 480i/p) is 720x480 pixels (width x height). However, low-end High Definition (720i/p) is 1280x720. Resolution Chart Anyway, now that the video players are built for HD you will find that uploading standard quality videos will result in videos that are "letter boxed" which means they have extra black bars on the top and bottom (or sides). Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to get a 720x480 video to fit a box that is designed for HD the best practice would be to crop some of it off so that it fits as 720x404 since: 16/9 = 1.78 (1.7777777777778) 720/405 = 1.78 405x1.78 = 720.9 The same would stand for 640x480 (old TV quality) video that would need to be 640x360 correct? I'm asking because I'm not sure about all this and whether this is the proper way to fix these letter-boxing/display problems.

  • Hanging page loads every n loads

    Hi Guys I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input. Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either) Thanks in advance!

  • SUnreclaim size increasing in syc with a TCP-CLOSE_WAIT till application restart

    Recently found a behaviour where my application had a connection in TCP Close_wait state till the app was restarted (after about 5 hours). But during this period the SUnreclaim space was also increasing constantly and went down on restart. The application is runnning on a rhel5 os and Im not very familiar with the memory management system. Would appreciate if someone clould tell me what extactly is the Ureclaim space and why it is increasing in sync with the close_wait. Thanks.

    Hello all, Recently, I could not access the webpage bbc.co.uk anymore, while I can access other websites smoothly. Ar first, I though there may be some problem with my laptop. However, if I use my laptop through my company network, I can load the page bbc.co.uk normally. Then, I though maybe my ADSL at home blocks that web address. However, I tried another laptop with my home ADSL and it can load the page bbc.co.uk very fast. Now I do not know what could be the problem. Can anyone tell me what could cause the issue, please?     Running Win 2008, I'd like to extend the volume of a SAN attached drive that is part of a failover cluster. The SAN team has allocated additional drive space which is being seen by Windows Storage Manager. However, the option to "Extend Volume" is disabled, so is the ability to turn it into a dynamic disk. Is the ability to extend volumes when part of a failover cluster disabled or not available when it's part of SAN attached storage?

  • NFSv3 Asynchronous Write Depends on Block Size?

    I am trying to figure out if my NFSv3 deployment is performing SAFE asynchronous writes. I suspect that it is doing strictly synchronous writes, as I am getting poor performance in general. I used Wireshark to look at the 'stable' flag in write calls, and look for 'commit' calls. I noticed that, with especially large block sizes, writes to appear to be performed asynchronously: dd if=/dev/zero of=/proj/re3/0/zero bs=2097152 count=512 However, smaller block sizes appear to be performed strictly synchronously: dd if=/dev/zero of=/proj/re3/0/zero bs=8192 count=655360 What gives? How does the client decide whether to tell the server to perform writes synchronously or asynchronously? Is there any way I can get smaller block sizes to be performed asynchronously?

When I check the site using Google Pagespeed, I got very low score(31) even though the page load is fast. One of the high priority suggestion is to leverage browser caching by setting an expiration date. However, all the files are on external links. I have already set the expiration date for local files.

We are currently having a problem in which the page seem to be sent twice sometime. Upon checking, we found out that those who have this problem are coming from big organisation, so it was suggested that their server might cache the file for some reason. I would like to know, is there a way in HTML (or Classic ASP) to prevent that from happening? Or is it in IIS that we must set this up? Thanks,

    I currently have 3 stores online with 3 different domains, running magento with Apache and varnish (using Phoenix page cache extension) running on centos One store is for uk, another for Ireland and another for USA Trouble is (Example) If an US user hits the uk store , I would like the user to be notified to go to the correct store on the page, (I do not want them automatically redirected) I was able to php-pecl-geoip with maxmind database to get this to work, but as users on my website have increased I had to begin using varnish. how could I implement this functionality on with varnish so I know what country the user is from so I can display a message to the user to view their relevant website?

  • how to make man page not disappear on exit

    ...probably a silly question but I could not beat google into telling me the answer so posting here: I got 2 machines - Slackware 13 and Fedora 11. On the slack machine, when I use man I can scroll all the way to the bottom then exit man and the info stays in my terminal window (which I find very convenient as I can read it while typing the command in question, copy-paste the options, etc.). On fedora when I close man the man page info is gone. How can I configure man (or is it the terminal?) to not remove the man page info on exit?

    I have all my databases in full recovery and have the log backups happening every 15 minutes so my log files are usually pretty small. question is if there is a nightly operation that causes lots of transactions to happen and causes my log files to grow, should i shrink them back down afterward? Does having a gigantic log file negatively affect the database performance? Disk space isn't an issue at this time.

    I started using One Big Partition for everything and separating data out with folders when I got my current computer years ago. I'm preparing to upgrade my system from Windows XP to Windows 7 and I thought I might go back to putting my data on a separate partition. Most likely I'll just use the default OS install. My current Program Files tree has ~16 GB of stuff. Thinking ahead though, I've had XP installed for years. Who knows what apps I'm going to install down the line?     Hi, I am accessing an intranet site built by amateurs, that was constructed to be "best viewed by IE" (arghhh!). The site is in portuguese. All accented letters are jammed and do not appear as they should. As I create sites myself, I know that the best way to build a site in portuguese and other latin languages is to use the "charset=iso-8859-1" on the page's HTML encoding. This will ensure cross-browser and platforms compatibility. But I have no way to change this, because I am a visitor on this site. I don't know the encoding they are using. What I ask is: is there a way I can force my browser (Chrome or Firefox) to recode the page using the correct charset? I need this to work on Ubuntu.

    I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?
