• Managing Files/Folder in Content Repositories or File Systems with Oracle ADF and WebCenter

  One more entry in a set of entries (1,2,3) about the capabilities that WebCenter adds to ADF applications. WebCenter is basically the new Portal framework in the Oracle stack - and one key thing that portals do is work with content, allowing you to compose and publish content from files as well as save and store content. In this demo you'll see how using a set of taskflows provided by WebCenter you can add a file management, creation and viewing capabilities to a regular ADF application. To try this out you don't need any fancy content management system - we'll just use your file system for now. All you need is the WebCenter extension installed in JDeveloper, and then you can follow the demo on your own JDeveloper instance. You'll define a connection to your content repository you'll be able to add a bunch of pre-built WebCenter taskflows into your page. And suddenly you can upload/download/create and view document directly from your applicaiton. Check it out:

• Oracle Usability Advisory Board, Europe

  Earlier this month, I attended the first Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in Europe (held in Oracle's big campus in Thames Valley Park, Reading, in the UK). My main interest here of of course was to listen to customer's experiences and requirements in the area of user experience, focusing in on user assistance natch, but also, given my background in the translation and internationalization world, to watch out for issues in those areas that impact on the UX. I met some great people there and took away some powerful UX thoughts about where might go with the area of language in the UI, localizations, and other cultural issues. One area of special interest to me is language as part of the user experience. By language I mean terminology and style of wordings you see in interfaces and help. Are they reflective of how people really work and are used to. What is its relationship to competitiveness and productivity. An area rich in research potential for UX. • New Time Zone Patch DST V18 is available

  Sorry for not updating the blog more often at the moment - but more updates will come soon as I play around with Oracle Restart and single instance databases in ASM with Oracle 11.2. Just on the side there's a new time zone patch to DST V18 available since May 2012. You can download it via PATCH download from MOS with the patch number: 13417321 What do you think? Will Lufthansa operate a faster jet the other night? Will the jet stream be more powerful? Or a better type of fuel? Or is it just the travel portal which hasn't applied the correct time zone patches to catch DST change that night in the US whereas it happens two weeks later in Europe? Guess ... • Browser based UI Customization with Oracle Identity Management 11gR2

• Unity Occlusion Portals: What and How?

  (Here I eat my words on Meta about posting Unity questions on Unity Answers... since that site is less responsive than this one.) Unity provides cell-based Occlusion Culling (via Umbra, I believe). However, a newer feature that it supports is Occlusion Portals. The question is, if BSP-based occlusion culling is already a feature of Unity, what do portals add, and how? PS. This question is not "What are portals?" -- I'm aware of the original Quake BSP-style portals -- which is partly why I find the explicit portal concept in Unity odd, since it uses BSP anyway.

• New Paper on the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub-PeopleTools Relationship

  A new paper has just been published that explains the relationships and dependencies between the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub (formerly the PeopleSoft Applications Portal), and PeopleTools.  This paper will help you understand which versions of the Hub work with which versions of Tools.  The paper contains information on how new customers can install the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub, and existing PeopleSoft Interaction Hub customers can apply PIH 9.1 Feature Pack 1 functionality if they are on an earlier version. It also describes how PeopleSoft Interaction Hub releases are aligned with PeopleTools releases, the general upgrade process within the Feature Pack model, and how customers can expect this to work with subsequent feature packs, maintenance packs, and bundles. • New MOS Community: Oracle Endeca Information Discovery

  Effective November 22, the Oracle Endeca Community has been split into separate communities representing individual Oracle Endeca products. The Oracle Endeca Information Discovery Community will fall under the Business Intelligence (BI) category, and can be found here: https://communities.oracle.com/portal/server.pt/community/oracle_endeca_information_discovery/551. This community will focus on the Oracle Endeca Information Discovery (OEID) product, formerly known as Endeca Latitude and Endeca Discovery Framework. • Access Control Service v2

  A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)

  At Post University in Waterbury, CT, the focus is on the student. Generally, the first interaction from a potential student is a lead, which can come from a variety of sources. Any delay in following up with the interested student (the lead) affects the conversion success rate, i.e., the likelihood of enrollment. By implementing Oracle CRM On Demand, Post University automated the admissions process so the admissions counselors are in direct contact with the students and eliminated many manual steps. • A short but intense GCC Gathering in London

  About one week ago I joined in London many long time GCC friends and acquaintances for a gathering organized by Google (in particular I guess should be thanked Diego and Ian). Only a weekend, and I wasn't able to attend on Sunday morning, but a very good occasion to raise some issues in a very relaxed way, in particular those at the border between areas of competence, which are the most difficult to discuss during the normal work days. If you are interested in a general overview and some notes this is a good link: http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GCCGathering2011 As you may easily guess, the third topic is mine, which I managed to have up quite early on Friday morning thanks to the votes of some good friends like Dodji (the ordering of the topics resulted from democratic voting on Friday evening!). I learned a lot from the discussion: for example that certainly the new C++11 'final' should be exploited largely in the c++ front-end; the various reasons why devirtualization can be quite trick (but I'm really confident that Martin and Honza are going to make a good progress also basing on a set of short testcases which I promised to collect); that, as explained by Ian, the gold linker already implements the nice --icf (Identical Code Folding) facility, which some friends of mine are definitely going to like (however, see: http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=12919). I also enjoyed the observations made by Lawrence, where he remarked that in C+11 we are going to see more pointer iterations implicitly produced by the new range-based for-loop and we really want to make sure the loop optimizers are able to deal with those as well as loops explicitly using a counter. All in all, I really hope we are going to do it again!
