• Is there a name for this issue?

  I was just talking to my partner about how hard it is to personally judge how good your product is after a while because you use it so often. You literally spend hours on your computer doing nothing but work on this Consumer Facing application, and you start to feel a little fatigue of using it over and over and over, at least a hundred times a day. You get scared this fatigue may mean the product you are building may have the same effect on the users and might mean you are doing something wrong. All i'm asking is, is there a name for this in product development? For the fact that as a designer+ programmer+everything else, your product might not suck as much as you think simply because you spend way to much time with it, or a variation of this?

• Oh snap! My RPi was upgraded to 512MB! Woo-hoo!

  I ordered a Raspberry Pi Model B (256MB) over 4 months ago on backorder. When it finally came I saw it was upgraded to the new half a gig model! Woot! But, all was not perfect. Gary C. told me the shipped configuration of the new RPi models didn't have the right firmware for 512MB, and I had to upgrade the start.elf in the /boot directory to recognize all of the 512MB RAM. I did a "free" command, and sure enough saw only 240MB. Sadness. But, Gary gave me a copy of his start.elf which worked after some trail and error. For anyone ordering the new RPi Model B w/512MB, here are the steps to get you going with full 512MB RAM: sudo apt-get update --fix-missing sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-missing # NOTE: This step takes at least a couple hours on a # fast network wget https://raw.github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/\ 164b0fe2b3b56081c7510df93bc1440aebe45f7e/boot/\ arm496_start.elf sudo mv /boot/start.elf /boot/orig-start.elf sudo mv arm496_start.elf /boot/start.elf sudo reboot free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 497768 210596 287172 0 16892 169624 -/+ buffers/cache: 24080 473688 Swap: 102396 0 102396 So of course this means...   On July 13, 2012, we plan to upgrade the My Oracle Support HTML-based user interface (UI) with additional functionality that will allow those users remaining on the Flash-based user interface to switch over to the HTML version. Our goal is to provide a single-online support portal so that all My Oracle Support users can benefit from the same features and functionality. Prior to July 13, 2012, users of Oracle On Demand, Oracle CRM On Demand, Taleo, and Oracle Configuration Manager should continue accessing the My Oracle Support Flash-based user interface. After July 13, 2012, the above features and functionality to support these users will be available on the HTML interface. All other users of My Oracle Support can make the switch now. • Skype on 12.04 x64 does not start even after purging and reinstalling it

  I am wondering if there's anyone here who managed to use Skype on 12.04. It used to work (ever since I first tried Ubuntu 10.04) flawlessly, but after upgrading to 12.04, it just doesn't start. If I start Skype from terminal, it just says Segmentation fault (core dumped). I tried to remove Skype and installed it from different locations: Skype website (did not install at all, "package error") From official Ubuntu repository (doesn't start at all, segmentation fault) From repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" (doesn't start at all, segmentation fault) Interesting thing: even if I remove / purge Skype from the system, it still shows up in Unity menu (of course doesn't start). Any help here?

• Oracle Solaris Events at Oracle OpenWorld 2012

(In 2009 we were there in "coming soon!" mode, which was an interesting experience in itself.) • We Heart Discussion Forums (and Know You Do Too)

  It's not generally known, but Oracle (via Oracle Technology Network) hosts one of the largest discussion forums instances (forums.oracle.com) on the planet (founded in 2001), containing nearly 10 million messages from 1 million registered users. That's a whole lot of conversations! And we really, really value those conversations - they span almost every conceivable technical subject across hundreds of products and technologies. More often not - and this is by design - those discussions are stewarded by community volunteers, many of whom are Oracle ACEs (who in fact earned their ACE stripes that way). And so, I am very happy to tell you that we have just initiated a project with our platform partner, Jive Software, to upgrade that platform to the most current, modern version available. The end result should be a vastly improved user experience for everyone involved, in all dimensions. There are many, many details to work on in coming weeks, but we'll keep you posted - and, when needed, come back to you for advice and suggestions. For now, we just wanted to share the good news!

  Working for a Microsoft partner I was very fortunate enough to be given clearance to order a Microsoft Surface RT tablet. Justification, show new device to a customer event this Thursday. All good, time to develop an App. Surface arrived last Wednesday. Overnight, Coco our much loved one year old puppy Larba-Doodle pulled the power chord out of my bag and bit right through the cable (at the power-brick end). A quick re-order to Microsoft saved the day. Demo went great. Surface is fab, Coco; much loved too Laptop bag now placed a bit higher up in our house.

• Amazon GameCircle Integration

  I'm trying to integrate Amazon GameCircle and I have been able to successfully initialize GameCircle in my app, but the problem is when I click on the button that displays achievements, the GameCircle achievement list comes up but it says "You have unlocked 0 of 0 achievements". Same happens with leaderboards i.e there are no leaderboards for this app. I have created a Leaderboard and a few achievements on the online developer portal for Amazon but they don't show for some reason. Can someone help me with this. Any links/resources that help with integrating GameCircle will be appreciated. Thanks.

• Is ZeroMQ a good choice to make a Python app and a C# managed assembly work together?

  I have a task that involves talking to a .NET-based API (namely AutoCAD) to retrieve data, send commands, and react to events. I want to separate the API operations and the proper program logic (largely already implemented in Python) by using natural tools for both: a C# DLL for the former and a Python app for the latter. To connect these two pieces, I began exchanging JSON in ZeroMQ messages. I'm at early development stages but having recently discovered that ZeroMQ does not guarantee message delivery/order, I have reservations about whether this is a feasible way to go. Right now my app is a very basic REQ/REP pair and I plan to handle reacting to events and executing different commands by adding some sort of 'recipient-function' field to my message format. The reason that I want to use ZMQ is that I might be able to scale the software into a larger, multi-user, distributed solution sometime. I am a lay programmer so I would ask for your advice about this architecture. Should I just go ahead with it and plan to deal with message reliability/ordering when problems appear? Should I consider developing some kind of a REST wrapper around ZMQ?

• Should I concentrate on writing code for money or my studies while in college?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. Nothing as such like getting with Microsoft and coding. Should I be writing code and earning money as I still am in 4th semester? I only have C++ as learning language in college. Will my job count on these projects that I do, or should I concentrate on studies for now to get maximum benefit?
