• Windows 2003 registry corrupt - endless reboot

  Windows 2003 will run the loading screen then it stop with "Stop c000218 registry file failure or corrupt. The registry can not load the hive \systemroot\system32\config\security" then it start a count down about dumping the physical memory to disk and reboot itself again. I found Error starting Windows SBS 2003 - STOP: c0000218 but the config is different directory than mine. Is it the same step to try for recovery console?

  I have create a script to start a server(my first question). Now I want it to run on the system boot and start the defined server. What should I do to get this done? My findings tell me put this file in /etc/init.d location and it will execute when the system will boot. But I am not able to understand how the first argument on the startup will be start? Is this predefined somewhere to use start as $1? If I want to have a case startall that will start all the servers in the script, then what are the options I can manage. • Troubleshooting a crash with Windows 7

  I have a folder with several thousand videos (All .MPG extensions). When I open the folder with these videos, it shows up fine, but as I start scrolling down, it crashes the Windows Explorer. I removed the Length column and it was still crashing. I then removed the Date column and the problem disappeared. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem or at least identifying the file that's causing the issue.

• How to open first n bytes of file in hexadecimal and edit it?

  I want to edit some .avi videos (cut them, to be precise) in VirtualDub but it failed to open the files. They are encoded in xvid, which I have installed, and play in KMPlayer without problem. Also, all other xvid videos can be opened and cut just fine by VirtualDub. I suspect there's something wrong in the first few bytes of these particular videos (the magic number?). This means I have to open the offending files in a hex editor and make some necessary adjustments to the header. Problem is, they are very large ( 3 GB each) and take very long time to open in UltraEdit. Can UltraEdit open just the first few bytes of a file? If not, do you know of an application that can do that? Edit: I'm using Windows XP.

• Red and blue are swapped on Youtube

  Since Sunday (April 1st), red and blue are sometimes swapped when I watch videos on YouTube. Examples are "Peeling Apple Like A Boss" (blue arms and apple) or, to my dismay, the famous Red vs. Blue series (like this video) which sucks. Here is a screenshot of the RvB episode at 1:28. Vimeo is OK, other web video services are OK, only most YouTube videos are affected ... well, all that I could find so far. This video looks OK in Firefox but it's broken in Chrome. The episode of RvB looks wrong in both browsers. Local videos look file. What could be causing this?

  I've been having some issues with my RAID setup recently on my headless Ubuntu 10.04 server which means one of my mount requests is failing on bootup. Clearly I need to fix the RAID issue, but this machine is in my loft and having to crawl up there with a keyboard just so I can hit S a few times is extremely irritating. The exact message is as follows: The disk drive for /drv/photos is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery I'd still like Ubuntu to try and mount it, but is there any way to tell it not to wait for the device?

  What are good equivalent centos commands using functions in /etc/init.d/functions such as daemon to perform the following tasks? STARTCMD='start-stop-daemon --start --exec /usr/sbin/swapspace --quiet --pidfile /var/run/swapspace.pid -- -d -p' STOPCMD='start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --quiet --pidfile /var/run/swapspace.pid' It looks like daemon will work for the start command and killproc is used for the stop command. . /etc/init.d/functions pushd /usr/sbin daemon --pidfile /var/run/swapspace.pid /usr/sbin/swapspace . /etc/init.d/functions killproc -p $(cat /var/run/swapspace.pid) Would the --oknodo be needed in the CentOS env (the swap file is really only boot-time)? "oknodo - Return exit status 0 instead of 1 if no actions are (would be) taken." I don't see quiet in daemon or killproc, I can't imagine that it would matter though. The original start-stop-daemon for swapspace seems to have both -p and --pidfile (the same command). That must be an error. Did I miss anything? Any idea why daemon not create the pid file?

• How to increase the volume gain when viewing online flash video?

  When watching online Flash videos on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc... sometimes the videos are recorded at low volume. The thing is that, I have a HP Notebook with good enough audio volume, but when I watch these "low volume" videos the sound level is really low, even when I have the volume at 100%. So I am looking for a way to increase the volume gain (like VLC player where you can increase it to 200%), BUT while watching it live on Youtube... that is, I don't want to download the video on my PC. Is there a software that can do that? Maybe an advanced flash video player that integrates to browser? or some other software to increase the volume gain overall on my laptop? My Specs: HP Pavilion Notebook, Audio: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC (integrated), Vista 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, etc.....

• init.d service died

  Adapting some code from a linux forum, I've added a service script to /etc/init.d on my ubuntu natty server to start/stop/restart node.js It literally was working the first day I made it, but then today, after viewing my website this morning, the server threw a 404, and upon further inspection, the node.js process was gone. So I went to start the service again, only this time, node.js didn't start at all, and ever since I haven't been able to get my service script working. • How can I organize my video collection and update meta data?

  I have a large collection of downloaded video files containing different movies, tv shows and music videos. I have a FreeNAS box set up that uses Fuppes as a UPnP media server. My media player on Windows correctly detects this UPnP collection and can stream from it fine. However, All of my music videos, tv shows and movies are all sorted under the same 'Videos' group. I would like to seperate the different types of video files so that they can correctly go under 'Recorded TV' or whatever the case may be. Any ideas? I guess I am looking for something like an MP3Tagger but for video files?

• How do bots access directories on a server that are not DocumentRoot of public IP address? How do I stop them?

  I have a local network set up with apache2 and "named" running on OpenSuse 13.1 Linux. I used the "named" service to use my computer as a domain server. I set up my router to point to ask my computer for domain lookups, so I have a chance to have it rewrite a bunch of domains on my network to its own local IP, 192.168.0.111 This works great. I use virtual host configuration to allow various domains and subdomains (re-routed to the same IP via named) to pull up different directories in my computer. For example: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName 192.168.0.111 ServerAlias fmb.wa.net DocumentRoot /home/work/wa.net/fmb </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName 192.168.0.111 ServerAlias postrecord.wa.net DocumentRoot /home/work/wa.net/postrecord </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName 192.168.0.111 ServerAlias cvalley.wa.net DocumentRoot /home/work/wa.net/cvalley_local </VirtualHost> This makes it possible for me to hit cvalley.wa.net from any device in my network and get the site that lives in /home/work/wa.net/cvalley_local I decided to forward port 80 to this computer, so I could share a few development sites with coworkers. I can't control which site they see with the same named service, because they'd have to use my computer as their domain name server... So I added a line like this: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName 192.168.0.111 ServerAlias MY.IP.XXX.XX DocumentRoot /home/work/wa.net/cvalley </VirtualHost> Where "MY.IP.XXX.XX" is my public IP address. This works as expected, when you hit my IP address from a public network you see the site that lives in /home/work/wa.net/cvalley. The point of confusion that I have is that there are public IP addresses in my logs in other sites. I would have expected it to be impossible to access other sites in my network, unless the public user somehow figured out what I'm calling my ServerAliases, and is mimicing my domain set up... How can public traffic be hitting my other local sites? How can I recreate this kind of access? • Windows using the DNS suffix search list on all lookups, even valid FQDNs. How to stop this?

  When doing DNS lookups (specifically using nslookup, for some reason most things are not effected) Windows XP Pro SP3 is using the DNS suffix search list for every single one. Even for fully qualified domain names. For example I lookup "www.microsoft.com" but windows actually asks for "www.microsoft.com.eondream.com" (eondream.com is my primary domain). Now I can fix the issue by removing the Primary DNS suffix, but it seems to me that the DNS suffix search list should be for short, invalid names (where dots=0 or something). I'm sure I have a misconfiguration somewhere in windows but I don't know where. I've changed every option I can think of or find. Below is the output of ipconfig /all and nslookup (with debug & db2 enabled). This is using a static IP & (internal) DNS server. Will it still restart after such a long time ? • Merge Two Folders To Act As One (Software Raid 0?)

  Using Windows 7, I'm trying to setup what I've come to call a "Software Raid of Folders", not completely sure it's the right term, but I'm sure anyone who knows the true term will understand what I'm getting at. I have two folders, on two seperate harddrive, I would like to "merge" these folders while keeping them on seperate harddrive so they act as one folder. Example: Music and Videos are to be merged together to a new folder called "Merged" Music runs off of Harddrive 1 Videos runs off of Harddrive 2 Anything new saved inside Merged is saved within Videos that runs off of Harddrive 2 Now you see how I came up with the term "Software Raid", it's like an average RAID 0 setup, but instead I want to do it with just two specific folders on two different drives within Windows. Any help on this is apprecieated!

I am planning on purchasing a new server and I was wondering if there anyway I can estimate the fps while converting 10 videos at the same time? Regards EXTRA INFO I am using MP4Box (which uses ffmpeg) to handle the encoding etc. Its encoding at 23 CRF, audio bitrate of 96 and audio sampling rate of 44100. The server will have the following processor : Dual Opteron 6272 (2 x 16 cores, 32 cores total) + 128GB RAM.

• Event 4625 - Logon Failure - Server 2008 R2 is logging them all over the place ! How to stop the attack?

  I've been monitoring failed logons to a server which is directly connected to the internet with no hardware firewall in the way...testing purposes only. Using the Server 2008 R2 firewall, I blocked access to just about everything except RDP, then I told the firewall to only allow connections to the RDP port from "MY" static IP. I tested from other locations and I am not able to login to the server unless i'm at my office. So how are people coming from Chinese IP's able to attempt logons and get logged as failures ?? Is there something i'm missing that needs to be blocked? Any help would be appreciated.

• How To Hide YouTube Logo In Video Embeds

  YouTube is the most popular video sharing site where you find videos shared by common users to big organizations sharing their training materials, demos and live casts. Lets an assume an organization wants to upload training/product demo videos to YouTube and embed them on their corporate website.  Would not it be nice if they can hide the YouTube logo from the embedded videos? Definitely Yes. To remove the YouTube logo you need to do a small change to the embed script before using it on your site. Add the flag modestbranding=1 as shown in the script below Here is a YouTube video embedded in this post without the logo. The catch is when logo is hidden the player shows text YouTube as a text overlay at top right corner when you hover the mouse. Hope Google will let us hide even that in the near future.
