• Our company has 100,000s+ photos, how to store and browse/find these efficiently?

  We currently store our photos in a structure like this: folder\1\10000 - 19999.JPG|ORF|TIF (10 000 files) folder\2\20000 - 29999.JPG|ORF|TIF (10 000 files) etc... They are stored on 4 different 2TB D-link NASes attached and shared on our office network (\\nas1, \\nas2, and so on...) Problems: 1) When a client (Windows only, Vista and 7) wishes to browse the let's say \\nas1\folder\1\ folder, performance is quite poor. A problem. List takes a long time to generate in explorer window. Even with icons turned off. 2) Initial access to the NAS itself is sometimes slow. Problem. SAN disks too expensive for us. Even with iSCSI interface/switch technology. I've read a lot of tech pages saying that storing 100 000+ files in one single folder shouldn't be a problem. But we don't dare go there now that we experience problems on a 10K level. All input greatly appreciated, /T

• Would SSD drives benefit from a non-default allocation unit size?

  The default allocation unit size recommended when formatting a drive in our current set-up is 4096 bytes. I understand the basics of the pros and cons of larger and smaller sizes (performance boost vs. space preservation) but it seems the benefits of a solid state drive (seek times massively lower than hard disks) may create a situation where a much smaller allocation size is not detrimental. Were this the case it would at least partially help to overcome the disadvantage of SSD (massively higher prices per GB). Is there a way to determine the 'cost' of smaller allocation sizes specifically related to seek times? Or are there any studies or articles recommending a change from the default based on this newer tech? (Assume the most average scattering of sizes program files, OS files, data, mp3s, text files, etc.)

• peer to peer disk image transmission

  Installing linux/windows through pxe works smoothly for me. But downloading images(especially windows) is a headache. Let alone the time, bandwith usage is horrible. And p2p tech comes to my mind. But I have no clue how it works or where to start. Anyone knows how to setup p2p local network, and applies that on image transmission? Any advice, tutorials or experiences will be great.   My colleagues abuse our mail servers public folders to store (old) emails so that everyone can read them using IMAP. I'm looking into good alternatives after reading this Tech Republic article: "10 reasons why you should begin phasing out Exchange public folders" The most important thing they need is access to emails from multiple computers without overloading our network. So do you have any suggestions for alternatives? If there's a nice combination with some CRM system it would be interesting too. Note: this doesn't have to be freeware, usability and efficiency are more important. The solution has to be Windows 32 bit only

• Android ListView scrolling to top

  Hi, I have a ListView with custom rows. When any of these rows is clicked, the ListView's data is regenerated. I'd like the list to scroll back to the top when this happens. I initially tried using setSelection(0) in each row's OnClickListener to achieve this but was unsuccessful (I believe because the ListView loses its scroll position when its data is invalidated - so my call to setSelection is undone. I still don't understand how the ListView decides where to scroll to after invalidation, though). The only working solution I know of was given by Romain Guy here: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/127ca57414035301 It involves (View.post)ing the call to _listView.setSelection(0). I found this to perform quite poorly. The newly generated list shows up with it's scroll location unchanged and there is a considerable delay before it scrolls back to the top. Is there any better way to achieve this functionality? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  I've seen plenty of negative comments regarding performance and general bugginess. However, to be fair, most of these look like they were within the v5.3 timeframe. Have they fixed all of those issues in v6.0? Is it an excellent product? • Missing IUSR account on Windows Server 2008 R2 / IIS7.5

  Ok, I'm stumped. I've been given the job of installing PHP5.4 on this machine. One of the manual installation steps is to configure the IUSR account to have specific permissions. The problem is, I see the IIS_IUSRS group, but no IUSR account. The only users listed are the Admin user, a Guest account, and a user for the security software. I'm not really the Windows server type, more of a *NIX guy - so this is getting a little frustrating. I've searched everywhere and haven't found a suitable answer, but I have learned a lot about IIS7.5 - so it hasn't been a total waste of time. I've tried several recommendations and found several similar problems, but nothing has worked so far. I've also just tried making the IUSR account myself, but to no avail. If anyone knows how to get this going, I will be ever so grateful.

• ListView items not clickable with HorizontalScrollView inside

  I have quite a complicated ListView. Each item looks something like this: > LinearLayout (vertical) > LinearLayout (horizontal) > include (horizontal LinearLayout with two TextViews) > include (ditto) > include (ditto) > TextView > HorizontalScrollView (this guy is my problem) > LinearLayout (horizontal) In my activity, when an item is created (getView() is called) I add dynamic TextViews to the LinearLayout inside the HorizontalScrollView (besides filling the other, simpler stuff out). Amazingly, performance is pretty good. My problem is that when I added the HorizontalScrollView, my list items became unclickable. They don't get the orange background when clicked and they don't fire the OnItemClickedListener I have set up (to do a simple Log.d call). How can I make my list items clickable again?

• How to change VS2010 Add Reference box filter ?

  I'm getting used to the new IDE (it's vc# express), but the first contact is somewhat confusing. When I open the Add Reference dialog and switch to the .NET tab, a label above the assembly list states: "Filtered to:.NET Framework 4". And it's true - I can reference .NET 4.0 assemblies only plus things like XNA 3.1. However I can't see older assemblies i.e. Managed DirectX libs, which are obviously installed on my computer as there was no trouble with adding a ref to them in vc#08. What is this? How to change the filter? The label is read-only. These sound like dull guy's questions, but I'm out of lack of finding an answer and there is no intuitive solution. Thanks in advance.

• EJB3 Remote vs Webservices, performances?

  Hello I'm planning to a webapp where every guy using it would have a client that would run computations on its computer (because these computations can't be done on the server, too much load...), and then send results to the server. I guess there will be lot of people interested in my application and that's why i'm wonder if my architecture is good and if i'll be able to handle thousands of people. I'm planning to expose remote EJB through JNDI with Glassfish server, so 1000 people could use these EJB at the same time (i guess there could be 5-50 requests / second) to retrieve the data needed for local computation, and then to send the results... Is it expensive to expose EJB to many clients? Would it be better to use webservices, rmi, another solution? Would you recommend me another architecture for what i'm going to do?

  Hi, Some time ago I have payed to a programmer for doing multithread server. In the meantime I have learned C# a bit and now I think I can see the slowndown problem - I was told by that guy that nothing is processed on the main thread (Form) so it cannot be frozen..but it is. But I think that altough BeginAcceptSocket is async operation, but its callback runs on the main thread and if there is locking, thats the reason why the app freezes. Am I right? • issues horizontal scrolling using jQuery.ScrollTo / jQuery.SerialScroll

  Hi, I am trying to develop auto horizontal scrolling for our website using - jQuery.ScrollTo / jQuery.SerialScroll. I am not sure if this is the best jquery library to do that, but if there's something better, please let me know. Here's the behavior that I want, check out foursquare's "Recent Activity" list. The data that will refresh will come from a ajax request that I make every few seconds using window.setInterval. I am not really a CSS/java script guy so I havent been able to figure out jQuery.SerialScroll. Here's the website - look at the "Live job Feeds" list. Currently the list does refresh the data coming from the ajax call, but I dont see the effect, the animation, in fact I dont even think serialScroll is being used. Right now I am doing a - $('#feed-ticker').prepend(content) to pre-append the newly arrived data. You can do a view source to look at the current code. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi guys, I have a freelance job for a php site. The client isn't a tech savy guy he says he would like to have internet radio on his website as well. Now the thing is that when we speak of internet radio what are we actually talking about? My client himself has no idea of what internet radio is aside form listening to streaming mp3s on a flash player embedded on a website. I don't think my client would be ready to set up a radio station or so.. I have to give my client a report on what can and cannot be done. • Must I call super when I implement -scrollViewDidScroll: of UIScrollViewDelegate in an UITableView?

  I made a custom UITableView subclass and implemented this: - (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView { // scrolled... } Now, what I think is that UITableView may also love to get this message for some obvious reasons. However, when I don't forward that to super, for some reason, everything still works fine. Must I forward that guy to super? I mean...it's a delegate method implementation, but as far as I'm aware of, this would still override anything implemented in UITableView, or not? Edit: I see...the delegate could be anyone. Never mind about this. BUT: What I have such a thing in a superclass, and make a subclass. How would I even know that the superclass does implement that method and I must forward it to super?

  I've been doing quite large application recently with Java - Swing. Now I'd like to move to web. Basically - I am not Microsoft guy, Java is fine with me. I've checked some basics of Java EE framework and decided that my choice will be Spring. I already am familiar with JDBC. Learning Spring is one thing, but working just with GUIs (C++ and Java) means that I have very poor knowledge of web development. Before I start reading tutorials of Spring MVC, what should I know to develop web solutions? I am mainly interested "how to" with graphics ... start from scratch or some nice IDE RAD-like development ? I kind of like f.e. Silverlight and integrating to web or asp.net win forms - allows us 'GUI' people develop faster. So can you please give me some useful advices? Thanx

• Benefits of programming (doing) versus reading blogs (thinking?)

  I have come to a conclusion or realization that perhaps many developers I know including myself have a fanatical fascination with reading as many programming and technology blogs or listening to podcasts as humanly possible. I sometimes wonder if this time would be much better spent in actual coding and doing, rather than the incessant thinking and perhaps wondering what the "other guy" is doing? With a very large signal to noise ratio in most blogs and podcasts, is there real benefit in maintaining a huge and constant blog role.. or is this some primal fear or instinct to keep up the pace unless being left behind? Can they simply be relegated to Google search and just-in-time learning? Edit: (There are some amazing answers here and touch a philosophical nerve with me, if you are reading this for the first time, I recommend taking the time reading through the answers below)

• Visual Studio 2010: adding a service reference to a 2008 generated wsdl

  Doesn't produce a app.config . In my team there is a guy who has Visual Studio 2008, he created a webservice. Then there is me, adding this webservice to a console project. Adding the service reference goes without problems but no valid app.config is generated. It's just empty <configuration> </configuration> When I disable 'reuse types' in my service reference it works but then I get an ambiguous error. Is this a bug? I found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2159107/visual-studio-does-not-generate-app-config-content-when-add-service-reference this one, but there is no solution there, so I thought I bump the problem up again. • Recommendations for keeping a build server updated

  As a guy who frequently switches between QA, build and operations, I keep running into the issue of what to do about operating system updates on the build server. The dichotomy is the same on Windows, Linux, MacOS or any other o/s that can update itself via the internet: The QA team wants to keep the build server exactly as it is from the beginning of the product release cycle to the end, since installing updates could destabilize the server and means that successive builds aren't made against the same baseline. The ops team wants the software to be deployed on a system with all the latest security patches; this can mean that the software isn't deployed on exactly the same version of the o/s that it was built on. I usually mitigate this by taking release candidate builds and installing them on a test server that has a completely up-to-date o/s, repeating the automated tests that are run on the build server and doing some additional system level testing to make sure everything looks good before deployment. However, this seems inefficient to me; does anyone have a better way ?

  hello, i am trying to implement a graph which a uiview draws. There are 3 UIViews to animate a left/right slide. The problem is, that i can't cancel the UIView animation. So I replaced the UIViews by CALayer. Now, the question is if CALayer is appicable for this? Is it normal to draw on a CALayer like this? And why is a CALayer so slow when I manipulate the frame properties. CGRect frame = curve.frame; frame.origin.x -= diffX; [curve setFrame:frame]; Is there a alternativ? P.S. I am a german guy. Sorry for mistakes.

  I'm trying to take advantage of HTML 5 web sockets in .NET and the easiest way appears to be something like what this guy does. I've already tested this myself and it works great, but there are a few problems if I try to deploy this to my hosting site (discountasp.net). Basically, I am not allowed to open up a port on 8080 and listen on it. I then tried to figure out a way to listen on port 80 with IIS as well, but using the HTTPListener, I run into sercurity issues as well. This doesn't seem like it will help since I can't mess with this stuff on the hosting site server either. So to make my life easier, I think I need to find a hosting site that simply allows me to open up a socket on port 8080 and listen on it. Anyone know of one? Or does anyone know of a workaround (besides sniffing all the traffic on port 80)?

• How do I get the intellisense in FoxPro 8 to work with .net COM objects?

  Hi, I'm at my wit's end with this. What I'm doing is making a C# dll file that needs to have some methods exposed to FoxPro 8. This guy here http://www.west-wind.com/presentations/VfpDotNetInterop/DotNetFromVFP.asp says that you can put [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.AutoDual)] in front of the (C# in my case) class, and then intellisense in Foxpro magically works. I'm accessing the COM object fine in FoxPro, but unfortunately the intellisense doesn't work, and it's annoying me. Is there some other step I'm missing to this? Is there some registry entry to look for to confirm that the methods are exposed properly (for intellisense to work)? Are there other steps in Foxpro that I'm supposed to follow (I don't know a thing about FoxPro!) It might be a pretty obscure question these days, but someone on here must know the answer! Thanks

  Actually I love UILabel. They're sweet. Now I had to go to UITextView because UILabel is not aligning text vertically to the top. Damn. One thing I really need is a text shadow. UILabel has it.   Hello, I want to build a static library (*.LIB file) GNU libiconv on windows to be used with other libraries in Visual C++. Other libraries I'm using are built with "MultiThreaded DLL" (/MD) Runtime option. So, I need to build libiconv with the same option. Problem is the libiconv uses GNU build system and I want to compile with /MD option. I need to build from the latest version of libiconv-1.13. I wonder how this guy has ported it? Can some one please tell me how to build *.lib from this and compile it using MSVC?
