  I am trying to get samba to work properly... I have a "Movies" share (//server/Movies), I want only root account to be able to upload and delete. Guest can view "Movies" share without password/login but they cant delete/update (only view). [Movies] path = /mnt/user/Movies browsable = yes public = yes writable = no write list = root guest ok = yes I can access to Movies share as guest but when I try to add new file I get an error saying: "You need permission to perform this action" I expected username/password to popup but it didn't, how to fix this?

• Hardware issue: UI freezes and hard drive light goes solid several times per hour

  I have a workstation that has been acting up for the last few weeks. It currently has Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on it, and 2 HDD mirrored. A few times per hour the screen will freeze up, applications will say "not responding", sometimes the screen will turn a lighter shaded color--at the same time the HDD light is on solid. This lasts anywhere from 10 to about 50 seconds. Could this be something with one of the drives or the mechanism keeping the mirror in place? Any other ideas?

  I have completed a very complex Excel spreadsheet with a lot of equations, except ... I forgot to include September I have Jan through Dec, all the months, except the calculations for September. Of course all the equations are currently perfect for the data that's here. How do I add a whole new column without ruining the previous equations? PS: tomorrow is my holidays and I have to go to work to finish this table, so bad. would really appreciate some kind expertise :) cheers craig.

• NTPD issue - syncs then slowly loses ground

  RHEL 5 workstation. Has been running smoothly for years. I did a 'pup' recently and followed with a nice, cleansing reboot. Afterwards the system had some startup issues: namely MySQL refused to start. It just went "...." for 5-10 minutes before I did another boot and skipped that step (using 'interactive'). This was the only service that didn't wan't to start normally. So now that the system is booted I've found that it doesn't want to stay in sync with the NTP master and after 48 hours is refusing any SSH other than root. NTPD: this service starts normally and gets a lock on 4 servers. Almost immediately it starts to lose ground and now (after 3 days) is almost 40 hours behind. If I stop/start the service it gets the lock, resets the system clock and starts losing ground again. The 'hwclock' is set properly and maintains its time. Login: when I (re)start the ntp server I am able to login normally. I assume this problem is due to losing sync with LDAP. This appears to be verified by LDAP errors in /var/log/messages. Suggestions on where to look? ADDENDA: Tried deleting the 'drift' file.   I just bought a new router, D-link DSL 2641B and want to connect it to another one, provided by my ISP, Asmax AR 804MP. Previously, I had Linksys WRT350N, and there was no problem, while I had Ethernet cable plugged in to one of LAN ports in Asmax and INTERNET(RJ45) port in Linksys, connection used PPPoE protocol -- worked OK. D-link has DSL(RJ11) port (which I don't want to use as Asmax replacement, while there is a separate Ethernet cable with a TV plugged to Asmax, which I don't want to configure from scratch on D-link). How should I connect my new D-link to work with Asmax? Via DSL port? Via one of the LAN ports (in which case I probably should change the purpose of this port in the config, I guess?). I tried connecting D-link both ways: LAN(ASMAX) to LAN(DLINK) LAN(ASMAX) to DSL(DLINK) (using RJ11 - RJ45 cable) I hope there is some setting in the DLINK's config that I overlooked. I haven't tried to see what's in ASMAX's config, but I guess I don't need to change anything there, while Linksys worked just fine? • Debian + ProFTPD + LDAP Incorrect Password Issue

  I have the LDAP configuration configured for ProFTPD and I have modified the modules.conf file to include the LDAP module. However, every time I login with FileZilla I get 530 Login Incorrect. It does this for all users except those whose passwords are defined locally as well as in LDAP. The exact same setup works fine on my CentOS server and I've already tried re-installing it after purging the configuration files.

• Windows 7 boot manager issue

  I was having windows 7 installed on my laptop, yesterday I tried to install Open Suse operating system. During its installation I chose a NTFS partition and formatted it to ext4 filesystem. During installation an error came that mount point cannot be created on this partition and I aborted the installation. They on reboot a message came BootMgr is missing. I then reinstalled the windows but on complete installation when setup rebooted the system then a blank screen came with a cursor blinking. I went through many forums and learnt may startup repairs and commands but it continues to hang up at a blank screen with cursor blinking. Reinstalling new windows 7 is also not doing any effect. I urgently need to repair my laptop for very important work. Please Help

• Issue booting Linux Mint from Live CD?

  I had Windows 8 and Linux Mint 15 dual booted on my laptop. When I first installed Linux, I wasn't able to load into because the grub would not show. To fix this, I used boot-repair from a Live CD. This time, I updated to Windows 8.1 and it showed a watermark telling me my secure boot wasn't configured properly. I then went and enabled secure boot (BIOS) and I believe it was after that that the Grub would not show once again. I tried to boot from a Linux CD again but when I try, it gives me the following errors: error: failure reading sector 0x0 from 'hd1' error: you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue... Before, it was giving me an error with sector 0x6d200 or something instead of 0x0. I am completely unsure of what to do. I do not know what other details to give except that this my have happened after I enabled secure boot, and I actually clicked reset to default setting so I am unsure if any other settings were changed in the BIOS menu.

• Ubuntu xrandr rotate issue

  I've just bought a second monitor for my PC which happens to be a pivot monitor. I've already read lots of forums related to my problem but haven't come across a solution - I have the same symptoms as dozens of posts but no matter whatever I try it just doesn't work. I've already changed the xorg.conf file and added in the device section just under Driver "nvidia" the following for my second monitor: Option "RandRRotation" "on" When I save and reboot I try to rotate my screen with the nvidia X server settings by choosing the second monitor and clicking either "left" or "right" for the rotation. It immediately exits the nvidia settings window and does nothing. I tried within the terminal by typing: xrandr -o right I get the following error: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I actually manage to rotate it with Option "Rotate" "CCW" instead of "RandRRotation". The problem with this solution is that you get the second monitor in the right position, but any window you open on that screen is practically unchangeable. You can't change the size nor move it, making it useless for reading PDFs, which is the main reason why I bought this second screen to help me write my thesis. • Linux (Kubuntu 9.10): Strange DNS problem [seems to be IPv6 issue]

  Hi, I'm experiencing strange problems with my Kubuntu 9.10 when doing DNS requests from various applications. The requests are extremely slow, so loading any pages in Firefox or Konqueror, doing package installations in Kpackagemanager and other apps is really painful, while for example Opera doesnt have any problems, and ping is normally fast as well for DNS pings. I checked the proxy settings of both the used applications as well as of the general system and there are none, so to me it doesn't seem as there was something inbetween.. Does anybody have an idea on what to check for possible problem sources or how to solve this ? I'm behind a DSL home router which does the DHCP (and works well with my other computer). Any kind of advice would be really helpful. Edit: It seems to be some kind of IPv6 problem, as I could get it to work by disabling IPv6 explicitly in Firefox. Is there a general solution to this ?

• Timing issue with autohotscript, fails to dump or open destination file

  I've created a autohotscript to quickly dump selected text into my jot file on the Desktop and I think I'm facing a timing error. The script works like thus: Select text when reading a text file, browsing internet, reading PDF, etc. Hit Ctrl + J Contents of selected text is dumped into my jot file. When I press Ctrl + J very quickly, it sometimes doesn't come up in my jot file and sometimes when I keep pressing Ctrl + J for a long time, many instances of the text appear. • APC Smart UPS network shutdown issue

  Here is a bit about our setup: We have 2x Smart-UPS RT 6000 XL units with network management cards We are running Powerchute from a network server Powerchute is connected to the management cards of both UPSs UPSs are set to do a graceful shutdown via Powerchute when the battery duration is under 20 minutes We also have a command file that runs with Powerchute Although our setup is redundant we do not have an equal load on each server due to APC switches for single power devices The problem is that as we do not have an equal load on each server the batteries drain at different rates. This means that the UPSs both get to the specified low battery duration at completely different times. The problem here is that UPS 1 may have run down to 5 minutes and is in desperate need of initiating a Powerchute shutdown - UPS 2 still has 25 minutes of runtime so no shutdown is initiated. Consequently UPS 1 goes down and takes all the servers with and then shuts down UPS 2 as well! What we need to happen are 1 of either 2 things: Powerchute initiates the shutdown as soon as either UPS reaches the 20 minutes low battery duration setting - and doesnt wait for both The UPS with the heavier load expends its entire battery but does not shutdown both UPSs and lets the load be switched across to the UPS that still has runtime remaining. That way when the UPS that still has runtime reaches its low battery duration it can proceed with the graceful shutdown via Powerchute. Hope that makes sense, any help is greatly appreciated!

• Issue with user having a gmail account and Google Apps account using same email/username

We have a user in our organization that had been using her email address at our domain at her username for gmail.com We recently moved our folks on to Google Apps, and have just moved our email server over to Google (IMAP/SMTP). I'm having all kinds of trouble only with this user's account with her sending and receiving email via the new Google mail server and wondering if it's because of her existing Gmail account. So her email address with us is [email protected], which is her login/user id with us on our Google Apps site. She still has her gmail identity tied to that same [email protected]. She's ok with deleting her old Gmail account...if I do so however will it goof things up for her going forward with us on the Google Apps site? Will she not be able to receive email? Thanks! Joshua

• Mikrotik and NAT/Routing issue

  I have basic NAT/Routing problem with Mikrotik RB750 that I've been unable to solve over the past days. From our ISP we have 26 IP addresses: 10.10.10.192/27, with 10.10.10.193 being the gateway and 10.10.10.194 the first available IP. What I need is that everything connected to ether2 gets a public IP from the DHCP server, and everything connected to ether3 gets a local IP from another DHCP (192.168.100.0/24). All clients should have internet access (I'll figure out bandwidth throttling later) and optimally just 'see' each other (all boxes are Win7, I guess this can ultimately be handled with VPN). Here is my setup: ether1 (10.10.10.194) is connected directly to ISP. 20 clients connected to ether2(10.10.10.195), and another 20 to ether3(10.10.10.196) (both through same 24 port switches). This is my setup, which doesn't work, all 20 clients from ether2 can access the internet, though all comm. seems to come from 10.10.10.194 (is this due to the masquerade on ether1?), and ether3 can't access the internet at all. I think that I need to masquerade ether3, and SNAT/DNAT or NETMAP ether2, but that doesn't work either, I guess that I need to somehow 'wire' both ether2+3 to ether1. The sound from my virtual machines comes out of my macbook speakers but the volume is not controllable using my macbook volume controls, only by using the volume control on the XP machine. My problem is that i need to use headphones, and when i plug a headphone jack into my macbook, the sound from my vmware virtual machines still comes out of the macbook speakers. I am baffled. Please help. Thanks in advance...
