• backup without overwriting old backups

  I'm using Ubuntu server 14.04 to backup all data from '/mnt/test/ folder' to '/home/john/' with TAR and archive to stuff.tar.gz and to make it to backup automatical. I use cron to backup it every week so what if i want to use cron to create an additional backup file instead of overwriting the existing one? So, after month I'd have 4 backups, each with a unique name. Is there a way? Script ar other backup tool what would do that?

• How much time do you need in between large projects?

  You've launched a large project at work, something that's been in progress and taken up large chunks of your life for more than 6 months. The post-launch triage is over. Tech support isn't calling you every hour because they don't know how to troubleshoot an issue. Your hours drop from 60+/wk to whatever is normal in your organization (which is hopefully less than 60+!). How much time do you (or your team) need before the next large project begins? I was asked this question at work and I think the ideal minimum is two weeks -- one week to clear your desk and inbox + one week to clear your head and remember what it's like to have a life outside of work. I'd frankly acknowledge that just being asked this question is a huge boon to work/life balance. But I do think it's possible to go too long in between.

As a result, I lack experience from many things, such as the basic homework/test questions many CS graduates take for granted. I recently had a tech screen interview where I fumbled and struggled to finish a (relatively) common question, I believe due to this inexperience. My question to all of you is this: do you know a good source for a bunch of these problems that includes answers, for an entry/intermediate developer who is trying to gain coding problem solving experience?   I'm building a website for a student organization I am involved in at my college. Most of the site will be static - i.e. won't change from year-to-year, but certain pieces will. I am high-tech, but most of the others aren't, and I am graduating in the spring. So how should I go about building the website so as to allow those that take over in subsequent years to edit information? Examples: Events: I already plan on using a Google calendar for this Officers: There will be profiles/pictures for all the officers on the web page Connections: Partnerships with other organizations that we have currently, but may not in future, or may add more in future Should I use some form of CMS (Content Management System)? If so, how restrictive are they (e.g. Drupal) to what you can build and then how easy is it to edit.   I'm looking to create a type of homepage for my kindle like you might expect to see upon waking up (though realistically, I plan on using it as a secondary screen throughout the day) whereupon it shows you several things dividing the screen, but not being scrollable. I just want the summary to fill the screen of the web browser. It would show the weather my gmail inbox my calendar for the day maybe some tech news However, as a starting question, how would I go about embedding my gmail inbox into the page? I would love to put m.gmail.com into an iframe restricted to a certain portion of the screen, but I know that won't likely be happening. Any ideas on how to embed an email summary or the calendar?   I have read some of the things posted here and I keep reading about people running stuff like /foldername/executable -cmd NAME (was reading about a programmer using Eclipse, so he was testing something he made) I don't see things like that when I run things here (Ubuntu 12.04) because of the launcher and the Ubuntu button at the very top. That and Eclipse indigo has a button for running and testing things it makes. Just asking how and why it's common? (assuming it's the Terminal[Ctrl+alt+T] but I'm not sure)

  I went to interview a week ago for an IT position pertaining to tech support at Ameriprise. I applied and they liked my resume and experience. They then asked me to come in for the "first base." I went in and they gave me 20 logic questions out of which I got 9 correct. After that he told me that they will call me to let me know in 1 week. Does getting 9/20 right on a test like that means I will be rejected OR is it a way for them to know how I think? Please let me know. Thanks!

• Problems migrating software RAID 5 to new server (linux)

  I have a CentOS setup with sw RAID5 that holds my data. Well, the server died, so I bought another box to migrate my drives to. Only thing is, I cannot get the RAID array rebuilt (not even sure it needs rebuilding, might just need the /dev/md0 mapping created... but I don't even know how to determine what I need!) Some details: RAID5 software (used mdadm) 4x 250GB drives (2 are SATA, 2 are EIDE -- would this matter? It worked fine in the other box...) latest CentOS distro built using mdadm I've got a decent amount of experience with standard linux stuff, but the hardware level stuff runs me in circles. I've spent some time googling and elsewhere here on SF, so please be kind for my newbie questions :). My question is this: how can I diagnose the problem? For all I know, I'm using the wrong device blocks when I try to rebuild the array, but I can't find the command to display only the devices that have some physical attachment. Is there some simple way for me to run mdadm, having it scan over all my physical drives, and say "hey, drives 2,5,6,7 are a software array, want me to mount it?" I basically just took the drives from my old box and put it into my new one. They show up in the BIOS. What steps do I need to take in order to get the array up, running, and mounted? • Where to get glib-config for Kubuntu?

  I'm trying to compile Midnight Commander on a KUbuntu 9.10 (Karmic) box with no root access. I've set up a directory under $HOME, downloaded the mc source package and various stuff required for building, such as autotools. I've unpacked the CONTENTS of all those packages into this working directory such that I have the usual ./usr, ./lib, ./etc hierarchy. I manage to get configure through a lot of tests, but I can't seem to fool it into finding glib. checking for glib-2.0... checking for glib-config... no checking for glib12-config... no checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.6... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: Test for glib failed. GNU Midnight Commander requires glib 1.2.6 or above. My system has glib installed: /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.2200.3 ... and I've also downloaded and unpacked the glib package into my working directory: libglib2.0-0_2.22.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb libglib2.0-dev_2.22.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb ... but still the elusive glib-config is nowhere to be found. It's not in any debian package for Karmic, either. So I'd appreciate any help getting over this hurdle. Please note, again, that I don't have root, so I can't just merrily apt-get stuff.
