• Database structure - To join or not to join

  Hi! We're drawing up the database structure with the help of mySQL Workbench for a new app and the number of joins required to make a listing of the data is increasing drastically as the many-to-many relationships increases. The application will be quite read-heavy and have a couple of hundred thousand rows per table. The questions: Is it really that bad to merge tables where needed and thereby reducing joins? Should we start looking at horizontal partitioning? (in conjunction with merging tables) Is there a better way then pivot tables to take care of many-to-many relationships? We discussed about instead storing all data in serialized text columns and having the application make the sorting instead of the database, but this seems like a very bad idea, even though that the database will be heavily cached. What do you think? Thanks!

• Is it possible to interop with Thunderbird using C#?

  Here's the latest hurdle in my ongoing quest to automate my job: All email in the company goes through 4 different email adresses, switching randomly back and forth (with a note attached in the global share: please set "keep email on server") All logic related to email is contained in a nice big Thunderbird profile, which gets copied back and forth to new machines; this includes sorting invoices into 5 different "folders", the list of VIP adresses to send notifications, and the VIP level of those customers I only need the contents of those folders (the attachments, anyway) The question: is there a way to ask Thunderbird for those attachments and lists from C#? Alternatively, can Outlook be set up to synchronize with Thunderbird? Where do I start reading? Ditching Thunderbird is not an option right now, I need to keep up with changes to the VIP list. P.S. I will set up a real email server right after Monkey saves me enough time to convince people about it.

  While very easy to do in Perl or PHP, I cannot figure how to use mysql only to extract the first unique occurence of a record. For example, given the following table: Name Date Time Sale John 2010-09-12 10:22:22 500 Bill 2010-08-12 09:22:37 2000 John 2010-09-13 10:22:22 500 Sue 2010-09-01 09:07:21 1000 Bill 2010-07-25 11:23:23 2000 Sue 2010-06-24 13:23:45 1000 I would like to extract the first record for each individual in asc time order. After sorting the table is ascending time order, I need to extract the first unique record by name. So the output would be : Name Date Time Sale John 2010-09-12 10:22:22 500 Bill 2010-07-25 11:23:23 2000 Sue 2010-06-24 13:23:45 1000 Is this doable in an easy fashion with mySQL? Thanks, Sammy

• asp.net ajax, change asp:image imageurl

  I have an update panel within which a sortable grid is present. While sorting, I have to change an image which shows the sort direction. The sort is an ajax operation initiated by a linkbutton for each column. Everything works fine except the image control. I am able to toggle visible property to show and hide it but, not able to change the ImageUrl property. imagesort.ImageUrl = "~/images/asc.jpg"; imagesort.Visible = true; The above code shows the image but the image is always the imageurl given in the markup not what is set in the code. If imageurl is not specified in the markup, no image(broken image) is shown irrespective of the above code.

  Hi, In my code i create a HyperLinkField object. Depending on a database field value, i want to set the NavigateUrl property. This is my problem, i don't know how. With: objHF.DataNavigateUrlFields = new[] { "id", "Stype" }; i get my database field. Now i want to check the Stype value. Depeding on this value i want to set the page where to navigate to. How can i do this?? At the end i set my datasource to the gridview and after that i call the bind() method. I hope someone can help me out

  Hi All, I'm having a bit of trouble with regex's (C#, ASP.NET), and I'm pretty sure I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. My task is to bind a dynamically created gridview to a datasource, and then iterate through a column in the grid, looking for the string "A&I". An example of what the data in the cell (in template column) looks like is: Name: John Doe Phone: 555-123-1234 Email: [email protected] Dept: DHS-A&I-MRB Here's the code I'm using to find the string value: foreach(GridViewRow gvrow in gv.Rows) { Match m = Regex.Match(gvrow.Cells[6].Text,"A&I"); if(m.Success) { gvrow.ForeColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red; } } I'm not having any luck with any of these variations: "A&I" "[A][&][I]" But when I strictly user "&", the row does turn red. • Core Data iPad/iPhone BLOBS vs File system for 20k PDFs

  I'm designing an iPad/iPhone app using core data. The main focus of the app is sorting and viewing up to 20,000 PDFs They are ~200KB each. Typically its best to not store BLOBS in a DB, but for desktop systems I've typically seen it said that if the blobs are < 1 MB then its fine to use the DB. Any considerations I should take into count? If I store them in the file system can I store them all in one directory and not have performance issues (I won't need to ever get a directory list since I'd store each's path in the DB)? Should I divide them among a handful of directories? If so is there a good rule on # of files per dir?

  I am writing some Selenium tests and I need to be able to find an ancestor of a WebElement that I have already found.   Within an event, I'd like to put the focus on a specific TextBox within the ListViewItem's template. Also the ListView.Items doesn't help, because that (of course) contains my bound business objects and no ListViewItems. Neither does myList.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromItem(item), which also returns null.

• Automating scraping of table data to XML

  Problem I have a YQL query result that I'm trying to get converted and sort into a clean XML file. Background Being the pains that they are, information from the World Cup isn't freely available in an easy to reuse format. So, after a bit of finessing with YQL I have managed to liberate the required table rows which contain the data I'm after. The YQL query can be viewed at: http://query.yahooapis.com/v1/public/yql/ravingbeefsteak/worldcup2010groupliberator?diagnostics=true I'd like to now convert this information into XML, and being an absolute n00b I don't know where to start or what to look for. I'm also needing to do a find and replace on the data to get the URL's working as they should without manual changes, and hopefully an initial sorting of the data. If anyone can point me in the right direction of what I need to be doing to make my needs a reality it would be greatly appreciated.

• How to filter rows in JTable based on boolean valued columns?

  Im trying to filter rows based on a column say c1 that contains boolean values. I want to show only rows that have 'true' in c1. I looked up the examples in http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/table.html#sorting. The example uses a regex filter. Is there any way I can use boolean values to filter rows? • Databinding int32 to MaskedEditExtender enabled TextBox

  I have a master/detail scheme for editing an asp:GridView using an asp:DetailsView. One of my fields is for a phone number of type int64 (always 10 digits). I would like this field to always be displayed as (###)###-####. My issue is the first digit in the phone number is always truncated for my edit item field which I used a MaskedEditExtender to achieve the formatting. Here is my EditItemTemplate for the details view: <cc1:MaskedEditExtender TargetControlID="edtPROJ_Leader_Phone" Mask="(999)999-9999" runat="server" ClearMaskOnLostFocus="false" ClipboardEnabled="true" MaskType="Number" /> <asp:TextBox ID="edtPROJ_Leader_Phone" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("PROJ_Leader_Phone") %>' ></asp:TextBox> When my details view is displayed for editing, the text box displays(_23)456-7890 for the integer 1234567890. Also worth noting that if the property MaskType="Number" is removed, the textbox shows: (234)567-890_. I would of course have the textbox show (123)-546-67890 after binding.

• WCF Paged Results & Data Export

  I've walked into a project that is using a WCF service for the data tier. Currently, when data is needed for a grid, all rows are returned and the results are bound to a grid and the dataset is stuffed into a session variable for paging/sorting/rebinding. We've already hit a max message size problem, so I'm thinking it's time to convert from fetch and cache to fetch only the current page. Face value this seems easy enough, but there's a small catch. The user is allowed to export the entire result set at any point. This means that for grid viewing purposes fetching the current page is fine, but when they want to do an export, I still need to make a call for all data. This puts me back into the max message size issue. What is the recommended approach for this type of setup? We are currently using the wsHttpBinding... Thanks for any assistance.

I read about sorting ArrayLists using a Comparator but somehow in all of the examples people used compareTo which according to some research is a method working on Strings... I wanted to sort an ArrayList of custom objects by one of their properties: a Date object (getStartDay()). Normally I compare them by item1.getStartDate().before(item2.getStartDate()) so I was wondering whether I could write something like: public class customComparator { public boolean compare(Object object1, Object object2) { return object1.getStartDate().before(object2.getStartDate()); } } public class randomName { ... E.g., Emails: [email protected] [email protected] Salaries: 50000 60000 IDs: 2 1 The puzzle: I'd like to sort Emails such that [email protected] is first and [email protected] is last and Salaries is 60000 then 50000 and IDs is 1 then 2. Additional detail: 1. Length of lists are the same and can be longer than two elements. 2. I will subsequently pass IDs to functions to retrieve further lists. Those lists won't need sorting as they will adopt the order of the IDs list.

  I understand the sharded counter, here: http://code.google.com/appengine/articles/sharding_counters.html The problem is that a simple counter will not work in my application. I am sorting my entities by a particular variable so I am returned not so much a count, but more of a rank. My current method is: SELECT COUNT(this) FROM Entity.class WHERE value <= ? Result + 1 is then the rank of the parameter in relation to the value variable in the persistent Entity objects. The limitation of this is the highest rank being returned is 1001 because count() can give a maximum of 1000. The reason I cannot store the rank on the Entity object is that the ranks are updated very often, and re-setting this rank variable would be much too costly. Any ideas on the best way to accomplish this?

• Drupal Filefield won't upload javascript files?

  Hiya, I've got a site where individual pages might require some javascript or CSS files hooked into their heads. I'm trying to keep everything client side when it comes to managing this process, rather than getting on the FTP and sorting everything out in the code so I need to be able to upload css and js files. I've got CCK filefield up and running, and it works with css files, but it refuses to upload .js files. It instead seems to view every .js as ".js.txt" and then the file appears on the server as thisismyfile.js.txt Not ideal... Does anyone know how to work around this. Is it a mime type problem with Drupal or the server, or is Drupal set up to avoid script uploads and n00b hack attacks. Once the files are uploaded I intend to use PHP mode on the page or node to call drupal_add_css and drupal_add_js.

• Selecting data from SQL Server table according to Month

  I have to come up with a way to get data from a SQL server table given it's month There's a smalldatetime type field called "date" in the "events" table and a field from it looks like this: 29/01/2003 17:00:00 It should be one among those that appear in the gridview when I select jan/03 in a given DropDownList control in ASP.NET. What would be the best way to do this? Assuming I only want to go as long as 10 years to the past, wouldn't making a dictionary be a good way? How do I change it so the top month is always the current, and each month another options appeaars in the dropdown ? It should be a common issue, so that shall not be a trick, but I want a good and clean way of doing this, and (since I'm new to asp.net) I myself would come up with something messy after a long time trying. So what I want is: -Select -Best way of populating DropDownList (with the current month always at the top) -Best way to bind the DropDownList user-friendly way of writing months to the select query-friendly way of writing datetimes Info: ASP.NET, (C# or VB.NET), SQL Server 2005

  Hey all I am going through the pain stacking process of sorting out someone else code. So I am decided to recreate a new database to sit alongside the old one then to use triggers to transfer data between both tables. Now I have an issue with a it looping IE A trigger on each table to update the other. Once one updates it should update the other but as both tables have triggers it just will loop which will cause an issue. Is their a way to stop this from happening ? • Frozen table header inside scrollable div

  I've three divs. Header, central and footer. There is a table in central div (gridview) which is almost always longer than outer div. So I've made this div scrollable vertically. The question is: how can I make table header that it would be visible after div is scrolled down? I could have done this header with separate div or table and make it fixed but widths of columns in the table are not always the same - so I don't know how to maintain widths of columns in header then. Any clue?

• How can I sort by a transformable attribute in an NSFetchedResultsController?

  I'm using NSValueTransformers to encrypt attributes (strings, dates, etc.) in my Core Data model, but I'm pretty sure it's interfering with the sorting in my NSFetchedResultsController. Does anyone know if there's a way to get around this? I suppose it depends on how the sort is performed; if it's always only performed directly on the database, then I'm probably out of luck. If it sorts on the objects themselves, then perhaps there's a way to activate the transformation before the sort occurs. I'm guessing it's directly on the database, though, since the sort would be key in grabbing subsets of the collection, which is the main benefit of NSFetchedResultsController anyway.
