• Import text file crunching library for Java/Groovy ?

  In a lot of real life implementations of applications we face the requirement to import some kind of (text) files. Usually we would implement some (hardcoded?) logic to validate the file (eg. proper header, proper number of delimiters, proper date/time value,etc.). Eventually also need to check for the existence of related data in a table (eg. value of field 1 in text file must have an entry in some basic data table). While XML solves this (to some extend) with XSD and DTD, we end up hacking this again and again for proprietary text file formats. Is there any library or framework that allows the creation of templates similar to the xsd approach ? This would make it way more flexible to react on file format changes or implement new formats. • How do I troubleshoot CanoScan LIDE20 on Ubuntu 9.10 in VirtualBox?

  This may be a VirtualBox question more than anything else. The host OS is Win7, which sees the scanner, but has no drivers for it. VirtualBox sees & recognizes the scanner as "Cannon Scan" and shows "state captured" when I hover over USB devices. Searching gives me many happy reports of this particular scanner being well supported, and that SANE should work with it immediately (also listedin the Supported Hardware List. I get "no devices available" from XSane... and I'm not sure where else I can check. I'd like to see if VirtualBox is telling the truth and find out if the USB port is actually being fed into the virtual OS. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where/how to do that in Ubuntu? Or other bright ideas. I'm starting with a little project to add some zing to my beginner linux studies - I'm sure I haven't checked some obvious things, because I don't know them yet. ;)

• Refreshing metadata on user functions t-SQL

  I am doing some T-SQL programming and I have some Views defines on my database. The data model is still changing these days and I have some table functions defined. Sometimes i deliberately use select * from MYVIEW in such a table function to return all columns. If the view changes (or table) the function crashes and I need to recompile it. I know it is in general good thing so that it prevents from hell lotta errors but still... Is there a way to write such functions so the dont' blow up in my face everytime I change something on the underlying table? Or maybe I am doing something completely wrong... Thanks for help

• A download manager for Linux which saves downloaded files in directories by date like 2012_06_29

  I've been using Download Master on Windows for years and what I liked most about it is that this program can automatically put downloaded files into directories by download date: /Downloads | |--/2012_06_28 | | | |--a.zip | |--b.pdf | ... | |--/2012_06_29 | | | |--c.txt | ... ... I'm looking for something similar for Linux. Is there any free download manager that can do this? I have tried KGet and uGet but they both seem to lack this feature. If there is a way to configure them to do that, I'll be happy to know about it. Thank you.

• What can I do to enhance MacBook Pro internal mic sound quality in iMovie?

  After using MacBook for two years, I bought 17'' MacBook Pro. I'm pretty happy with it, performance and all, but I also was going to record some music videos for YouTube. I play guitar and sing. However I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality that comes by default. I'm 100% sure my 13'' MacBook mic was much better at recording music and singing. Currently mic can't event handle acoustic guitar, outputting sound you'd think was recorded 5 years ago in ARM format on a Nokia phone on a loud concert. It totally feels like some lame filter is cutting low and high frequencies. I want to know what settings (visible or hidden) in iMovie or Mac OS itself I might want to tweak in order to get my MBP mic record clean sound.

• Can dd-wrt or tomato keep track of GB usage per billing period per device?

  I want to be able to track the usage of each device connecting to our router so we can split up the ISP bill by usage. Can dd-wrt or tomato provide the stats I'd need to do this? Update: After a bit of googling I'm aware of a much better answer than the current one. However I suspect there's probably more answers out there for other firmwares so in the interests of getting a more diverse set of answers—­and, I'll admit, because I'm getting tired of reading through obtuse firmware documentation—I've put up a bounty. If the only answer added is the one I've found I'll be happy to accept it for the bounty, otherwise I'll add it and accept it myself, but I'm hoping for an even better answer, or at least some options for other firmwares as from looking I've seen a few other people have asked for this and there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer, let's make this it!   How can I the remove DRM from books I have purchased for my Kindle? A solution that works on Mac OS X and/or Linux would be ideal, but a Windows-only solution is also acceptable. Moral aside: I do not plan to share or pirate books; I am very happy with the Amazon Kindle store and have purchased more books from there since getting my Kindle a month ago than I had in the previous two years. However, I do not feel comfortable keeping them in an encrypted format that only a single company's software will allow me to access. I may also want to convert them into a format for other readers in the future, which is not possible without first removing the DRM.

• Hyperic HQ metrics not working

  I am having a problem with Hyperic HQ. Several metrics, some in IIS 6.x (Request Execution Time, Request Wait Time) and some in .NET 2.0 (Bytes in all Heaps, Exceptions Thrown per Minute), always show 0. If I view perfmon on the server itself I can see that the counters have values greater than zero. There are some metrics that work fine, such as Total Get Requests per Minute and the other IIS defaults. I have looked in the server logs but nothing obvious shows up. Please advise. Am happy to find more information if required.

  I'm having some DNS issues on a new box I'm installing with CentOS 6.2. I am able to look up names using nslookup, dig, or host. I am able to ping machines by name or by IP address. However, when I try other tools, such as ssh, wget, or yum, they are unable to resolve names. • Modern open source NIDS/HIDS and consoles?

  Years back we set up an IDS solution by placing a tap in front of our exterior firewall, piping all the traffic on our DS1 through an IDS box and then sending the results off to a logging server running ACiD. This was around 2005-ish. I've been asked to revamp the solution and expand on it and looking around, I see that the last release of ACiD was from 2003 and I can't seem to find anything else that seems even remotely up-to-date. While these things may be feature complete, I worry about library conflicts, etc. Can anyone give me suggestions for a Linux/OpenBSD based solution using somewhat modern tools? Just to be clear, I know that Snort is still actively developed. I guess I'm more in the market for a modern open-source web console to consolidate the data. Of course if people have great experiences with IDS' other than Snort I'm happy to hear about it.

• Multi-Page PDF Banner/Poster from PDF

  I'm looking for a utility that will take one large sized PDF, and split it into smaller PDFs for banner/poster printing. Looking for a linux or multi-platform solution. More Background My goal is to take an Inkscape document and generate a PDF, then print it on a printer that doesn't do banner/poster printing automatically - so if there's a better solution, I'd be happy to hear that as well. I've found exporting as a PNG both takes a while, and sometimes blends are not preserved. Printing as PDF (Ubuntu print-to-file) seems to work well. I've found utilities that can take large images formats and generate multipage PDFs, but not PDF to PDF.

• Which browsers support font embedding.

  I've been reading about the @font-face rule and trying to work out if it's worth using it in a project to render "franklin gothic medium" for title instead of something like sIfr. I figured that for browsers that don't support it I could make it fall back on Arial. The thing is that I'm having trouble getting a definitive answer about which browsers support embedding fonts in this way. So far I've worked out the IE does, but doesn't support .ttf files. Other browsers I'm not sure. If anyone could point me towards some kinf of compatibility chart that would be great. Jon

  The server allocated for our cross platform projects (both Mac & PC) source repository is running Win2008R2 Core. We're really happy with its stability and we aren't interested in moving over to non-core. We need to get either SVN or GIT installed on the aforementioned box in the shortest amount of steps. We know the advantages/disadvantages of both systems. That being said, we don't care which one we use, we're just are looking for the path of least resistance on setting up a repository on a machine running R2 core.

• On Mac OS X how can I monitor what is using my internet connection?

  I've got a relatively limited broadband connection (I live miles from the nearest exchange) and from time to time net access (but nothing else) slows to a near crawl. I know from a bit of monitoring software that the connection is being fairly heavily used which would explain it but I don't know what's using it. There are certainly plenty of things which might (these days there are dozens of apps that will either regularly or infrequently check data or download updates) but how can I find out? I'm happy to pay (a small amount of) money if needed, though in that case I'd rather it were a recommendation that me just Googling for something.

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • Jenkins merge dev branch to master with -Xtheir stategy

  In GIT Plugin, we can merge one branch to other on work space before the starting of Build. However, plugin does not provide -Xtheir strategy. Now i want dev branch to merge on master, validate test cases and if successful then only push back to master. Problem i face is that if there is a merge conflict, i want changes of dev branch to exits (i know i can use -Xtheirs manually). • Braces (syntax) highlighting in OpenOffice Math formula text editor

  When you use OpenOffice Math, in upper part you see formula and formula text editor in lower part. Almost like this: %sigma = 2 %mu %epsilon + %lambda Tr(%epsilon)I So my questions are: How to replace OpenOffice Math's formula text editor with own text editor? ... or how to enable braces (syntax) highlighting in embedded editor? ... are there any extensions for anything like this? I need this because sometimes it's too much braces and stuff and it's hard to distinguish which braces match each other. Please do not suggest me to use MathType Mathematica (or anything) instead of OpenOffice Math (because I'm almost happy with it:)

• WAMPServer updates from WAMPServer Alive project... are they safe?

  Hi all... I've been using WAMPServer for a fair while and been really happy with it. Unfortunately I've been itching for an Apache 2.2.15 addon for it (currently there's only a 2.2.14 one). I know that I can 'manually' install an updated version, but I really did appreciate the ease of just installing the addon and having the paths etc. set correctly. Anyway, in my search, I came across the WAMPServer Alive project at http://sourceforge.net/projects/wampserveralive/ . My question is pretty basic: does anyone have any experience with addons from this project? Are they safe to use? Is there any reason in particular that I should not trust it? Thanks!

• Looking for alternative to NetNewsWire and Google Reader

  I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop. Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides. I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space. Any suggestions?

• Problems with row height in table with expand /collapse in IE

  I have ten rows in my table. All the even rows are hidden by default. The odd rows have a 'plus' icon in the first cell. The plus to be clicked to see the next even row in the table. Clicking the icon again will hide the row again. I do this with simple jquery hide and show methods. The problem with this in IE is whenever I expand and a row and then close it, the border of the row which was expanded stays in the page itself and does not clear. This makes the pages look awkward in IE. I don't face this issue in FF. My friend here suspects this has something to do with the cell height. Im not sure if that is so. So please help me fix this.
