• Building NanoBSD inside a jail

  I'm trying to setup a jail to enable building a NanoBSD image. It's actually a jail on top of a NanoBSD install. The problem I have is that I'm unable to mount the md device in order to do the 'build image' part. Is it simply not possible to mount an md device inside a jail, or is there some other knob I need to twiddle? One potential solution I'll try is to chroot from the host into the build jail, rather than jexec a shell.

• No internet access when using static IP

  I have just upgraded to Windows 8.1, and after the upgrade process is finished, I can't connect to internet. I tried running the "Troubleshoot problems": It concluded that DHCP needs to be activated: I let it activate DHCP, and I got internet connection back. The problem is I want to set this PC to a certain IP address (the IP address that it has been using all this time). I am also using Hyper-V, which I suspect has something to do with this problem. After I regained internet connection, I tried running one of my Hyper-V VM. From inside the VM I can connect to internet. That VM has static IP address. I also noticed that in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections", I usually have a network connection called vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Virtual Switch). I didn't find it there after upgrade. How do I set my PC to a static IP while retaining internet access in Windows 8.1? EDIT I have managed to recreate vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Virtual Switch) by unchecking Allow management operating system to share this network adapter in Hyper-V's Virtual Switch Manager and then checking it again. But when I changed the adapter to use static IP, it still can't connect to internet. • My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

  A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?

When I open a pinned site all the third-party toolbars, including LastPass, seem to be disabled and hidden from the options: As you can see in the following screenshot, LastPass is installed and enabled for both 32-bit and 64-bit IE: I've observed the same problem in IE9 and IE10 on Windows 7 and in IE11 on Windows 8.1.   It worked fine on Windows 7 RC1 and on Ubuntu Linux 8.10 with out a problem, but now it does not work anymore. I do not know what I could have changed inadvertently. I have also reset the phone to factory settings, but it still does not work. It does say on the phone that it is connected, but no websites load in the browser.

  Hello Few days ago I opened my computer as I always do after school, and got pretty amazed about my 1.27kb/s download-speed. It has continued for few days already. We have a wireless network, which is used by 3 computers. Normally I've gotten 200kb/s (I think we have a 2mb-connection) but now it just suddenly slowed down. My friends have the same service-provider, but no problem. So, is there any kind of program, which would show me all the programs using connection and how much. IE7 seemed to work okay but once I rolled out the IE8 browser update via WSUS, it defaults back to Bing search on all clients which is done Via group policy.   Hi, all. My girlfriend checked her Gmail yesterday morning, and then found, later on in the day, that it would no longer accept her password. She also found that this happened to her Hotmail and Yahoo! accounts. She's only checked these accounts from her work and home PC, and I've spent the day checking the home PC for problems. A full AVG scan revealed a couple of installers for her webcam software that had questionable security signatures, and a full Windows Defender scan brought back nothing. Assuming that her home PC was compromised, somehow, is there anything else I should use to check it for some sort of lingering malicious app before I tell her it's okay to login to her accounts, again? Furthermore, she's going through the GMail "account recovery" process as the account appears to have been disabled. Does anyone know if this actually works? Thanks so much. IVR Avenger

• Why does Internet Explorer sometimes fail to connect to anything until I restart it?

  IE has an annoying problem on my PC (XP SP3). I start it and try to go to Google (for example) and it'll sit there saying "Connecting" but nothing will happen and it doesn't matter how many times I try, it won't connect to anything. I discovered that if I kill IE and restart it then it might start working (and then it'll work every time). It might takes 3-4 restarts (of IE, not the PC) to get a working IE. Now I wouldn't normally care about this since I use Chrome but a lot of things use IE by default like Windows Update and the online help in Office 2003 so I would like to fix it. Interestingly, my work laptop, which is running Windows 7 RC 64-bit, has exactly the same problem (completely different network and everything). I'm utterly convinced it's not a network or hardware problem but some software problem. Edit: More info. It's IE8; No add-ons; Automatically detect settings is not enabled. It is set to "Never dial a connection".

  I've got a relatively limited broadband connection (I live miles from the nearest exchange) and from time to time net access (but nothing else) slows to a near crawl. I know from a bit of monitoring software that the connection is being fairly heavily used which would explain it but I don't know what's using it. There are certainly plenty of things which might (these days there are dozens of apps that will either regularly or infrequently check data or download updates) but how can I find out? I'm happy to pay (a small amount of) money if needed, though in that case I'd rather it were a recommendation that me just Googling for something.

  I'm using PAMIE (http://pamie.sourceforge.net/) to automate some testing routines on a client's web site via IE8, and would like to be able to run multiple tests under different user credentials. The site which I'm testing is using cookies to remember the user (without a "remember me" option I can deselect). Therefore, when I run a second instance of IE8 the cookies get shared and I can't log in as a different user. Is there any way to get IE8 to use isolated sets of cookies in each window?

  I have to use PAM authentication for DAV SVN, but when everything is configured as specified in mod_auth_pam documentation, authentication does not work. After some research I realized, that for this to work, httpd should be running under root user (which I don't like and won't implement) or apache user (under which httpd is running by default) should have permissions to read /etc/shadow file. So there is a pair of questions connected to each other which I want to ask: Is giving this permition to apache user a wise decision from security point of view? If answer to the first question is "yes", what is the correct way to do so? • How do I set Internet Explorer 64-bit as my default browser?

  Windows Vista x64. It defaults to IE 32-bit, and will not allow me to set 64-bit as the default with the "Make Default" button. I'm currently forced to workaround by starting IE 64-bit manually, and leaving it up with an empty window. Then when links are fired from apps, they open in that 64-bit version. Problem being is that sometimes I forget and get a bunch of stuff opened in 32-bit without realizing it. Then I have to remember all the links I clicked, close ALL of them, open IE 64-bit, and put them all back in. Trying to avoid all that re-work when I forget to do the workaround. Unfortunately, all the forums I've googled that discuss this just have a bunch of people saying "don't do that" and "you don't want to do that". Yes, I do want to do this. The particular feature I use only works right in my 64-bit version, and I don't use 32-bit plugins. I fully understand the implications of what I'm doing. :-)

  I am trying to download a Photoshop shape file (.csh), and instead of downloading it, IE treats it as a webpage and shows a series of symbols. When I try to save it, I am told to either save as an html file or txt file. If I save as txt file and change the extension, Photoshop says it is invalid, since IE saves the text source, not the actual file. I ended up having to use a download program to download it. Why is IE treating it as a webpage, and is there a way to fix the problem? Firefox shows the same issue.

• Can Internet data be used by malware when PC off?

  I have noticed over the last month that my off peak data has been used at a rate of approx 350MB per hour - this has meant that I have gone over my quota and slowed down by my ISP to 256k. There is no one in the house using it (2am-8am is my ISPs off peak hours) at that time. My PC and other wireless devices (ipad and iphone) are turned off. I have changed the wireless password on my modem 3 times and it is now 30 digits long. So I don't think someone else is using my wireless access between 2-8am. It has been suggested by my ISP that I may have malware/spyware on my computer. Sorry for my ignorance, but can malware still run if the PC is off? I did look at my modem's log and followed an IP address to a service called Amazon Simple server Storage. Could this company possibly be the culprit? I am not too tech savvy, so any assistance appreciated. I have run a barrage of spyware cleaning software eg malware bytes; spy bot etc.... Cheers Val

• Can I prevent Internet Explorer 8 from running scripts until the page is loaded?

  When trying to veiw a number of different websites in IE8, I get the following error message: HTML Parsing Error: Unable to modify the parent container element before the child element is closed (KB927917) On investigating the error message, it appears the script is trying to modify parts of the page before it is fully loaded. Is there a setting in IE8 I can change to prevent scripts from running until the page is fully loaded? EDIT: The sites in question used to work just fine, until I had to re-install IE8 for a seperate issue. Then they stopped working.

Please note, I am interested only in the security aspect, not scaling / fault tolerance / performance / etc. In my mind if the web server has been compromised using an attack over port 80/443, then the same attack would work over port 80/443 to the Web Service DAL box.
