• Microsoft releases Visual Studio 2010 SP1

  Fans of the tiny Raspberry Pi will be pleased to hear the new version of their Model B board now ships with 512MB of RAM (up from the previous 256MB). The best part about the upgrade? The price point stays at $35 a board. From the official Raspberry Pi blog: One of the most common suggestions we’ve heard since launch is that we should produce a more expensive “Model C” version of Raspberry Pi with extra RAM. This would be useful for people who want to use the Pi as a general-purpose computer, with multiple large applications running concurrently, and would enable some interesting embedded use cases (particularly using Java) which are slightly too heavyweight to fit comfortably in 256MB. The downside of this suggestion for us is that we’re very attached to $35 as our highest price point. With this in mind, we’re pleased to announce that from today all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB of RAM as standard. • Ubuntu 13.04 under Parallels Desktop - Black Desktop after X Windows Update

  I have been running Ubuntu 13.04 successfully on a MacBook Pro in a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 9. Today (2013-10-17) after applying today's Ubuntu update, which included updates to X Windows, my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine launches, the launcher comes up, but the screen background is solid black, rather than the shaded orange colour of the default desktop background (and my desktop icons are "hidden behind this blackness", as well). I can launch applications from the launcher, and there is a very brief white flash on the screen, and then it returns to black. It's as if there is a "black blanket" covering the entire screen, so there is no way to interact with any application windows using the keyboard or mouse. The icons of the launcher are responsive to the mouse, so I can right-click and quit any application I have launched. But the rest of the screen is non-responsive to keyboard or mouse. This same behaviour happens with two different versions of Parallels Tools, so I am quite sure this is not a Parallels problem per se, although I could believe that it could be a paroblem with the interface between Parallels and this new updated X Windows code. Could anyone tell me what has happened, and how I might be able to fix this problem, so I can continue to use my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine? (I do have the option of reverting to a previous version of my virtual machine from before this update, but if possible I would prefer to keep my version of Ubuntu 13.04 up to date with the latest updates.) • Installing Xubuntu alongside with UEFI

  For the past week and a half I have been trying to figure out how to install Xubuntu 13.10 alongside the Windows 7 install I have on my laptop (ASUS X501A with UEFI) and I'm pretty much at my wit's end. Could someone point me to set of thorough instructions on installing Xubuntu (or any of the Ubuntu derivatives) on a HDD under UEFI alongside Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium? Preferably one that also covers GRUB/bootloader problems that come afterwards. A few additional details: Motherboard does have UEFI. I've disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot. Launch CSM is enabled and the platform keys are not installed (these settings allow me to at least boot Windows 7). I set the HDD's partition table to GPT through GParted before I installed Windows. I'm installing from a bootable USB that has been created through a tool called Rufus with the GPT partition scheme for UEFI computers option, otherwise I've left it at default. I am able to boot into Xubuntu in UEFI mode, but I'd much rather be able to see the option: Install Xubuntu Alongside Windows 7 (or however it's phrased), Xubuntu seems to be unable to recognize that Windows 7 is installed. I do have access to a bootable USB stick containing GParted though Xubuntu seems to come preinstalled with it. If there's anything else that might be of help, please let me know.

• 12.04 update crash, now cannot boot

  Boot now freezes the system at the "Ubuntu purple screen" with the 5 dots under it. I cannot even CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to an alternate console. Have to push reset button on computer to reboot. After the 12.04 update crash, the system would boot, but I had no icons and no launch bar and errors about missing dependencies. CTRL-ALT-F1 and ran apt-get -f install and it appeared to get the missing packages. I followed with a apt-get update; apt-get upgrade. It appeared to install all of the remaining 12.04 update packages. Rebooted to same blank screen - no icons, but got a compiz error. In console I tried "unity --reset" rebooted ... Nothing ... It's dead in the water. Tried to boot into Recovery Mode - black screen - I cannot even CTRL-ALT-Del - have to push reboot button. Fortunately, I have Mint on another partition and I can access the broken 12.04 partition. Ideas? I can back up all of my folders using Mint, but I would hate to have to do a new install.

• Fix: Cant Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 from DVD

  If you installed Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, you may have trouble when you try ad add or remove functionality by inserting the disk (or remounting the ISO image).  I believe this is because of the path used to install the 32-bit Visual Studio program.  When you run the setup.exe off of the disk, you get this: Clicking on Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 brings up this dialog: But not long after it appears, it disappears to be replaced with: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.  Canceling setup. FIX: Use Add or Remove Programs Launch the Add or Remove Programs dialog in Windows, and find Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite ENU (or whichever SKU you installed).  Click Uninstall/Change.  From here you should be able to change your installed components of Visual Studio successfully: Thanks to Brendan for the tip! • Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Nvidia dirver (304.51) 64bit: problem 640x480

  I have a problem with this configuration: Asus K55V, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Nvidia driver 304.51. I have remove the nouveau driver with: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau I installed the official nvidia driver (from www.nvidia.com) but when I reboot the PC the resolution of screen is only 640x480 and the monitor is resized. Mo solution at this problem if i change the xorg.conf. Now i have uninstall the nvidia driver and reinstall with sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current When I reboot the screen resolution and size is OK, but if I start nvidia-setting I received the message: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. and with command: sudo lshw -c display | grep driver I received configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 This sound like the system is using the Intel card. When I launch command lspci | grep VGA the output is: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 1058 (rev ff) And there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I have read a lot of guides on internet but without success.. How i can use nvidia card with the driver that i have installed?

  As a programmer with over ten years of professional experience, I've often suffered from DSMD (distraction surplus/motivation deficit) disorder. I know I'm not alone. Many of my colleagues have shared their experiences with this productivity cancer to me in support groups or in moments of inebriated intimacy. Often, I observe friends unknowingly surrendering to it - sitting at their computer, cycling through the same set of web sites (blogs, facebook, youtube, news providers, wikipeida, etc.), over and over again. Intermittently, they get up, take a walk around the office, make small talk with their colleagues, get another cup of coffee, then sit down and start the cycle all over again. It is completely controlled by the subconscious mind and will destroy your ability to get into that groove you used to live in back in your better days. Programming requires extended periods of focused attention, and this type of behavior will really kill productivity and in the end, when deadlines are near, launch your stress level to near emotional breakdown levels.DiagnosisThe best way to diagnose infection is to completely disconnect your devices from the internet while working. If you find yourself launching web browsers every minute or so, then you're down with the sickness.TreatmentA few techniques I've found that will help send this ailment into regression are as follows:Segment your day into two to three hour work segments. For example: 9:00-11:00, 1:00-3:00, 3:30-5:00.Define a few small one to two hour tasks you want to accomplish in your day. Assign each of those tasks to one of the short work segments.If possible, turn off the internet and any other distractions during these work segments (at least until you regain control of your browsing habits) - this includes instant messaging and email. You can check your email and waste time surfing in the hours between work segments.Reward yourself on productive days with a beer or whatever butters your muffins.

• Memory limiting solutions for greedy applications that can crash OS?

  I use my computer for scientific programming. It has a healthy 8GB of RAM and 12GB of swap space. Often, as my problems have gotten larger, I exceed all of the available RAM. Rather than crashing (which would be preferred), it seems Ubuntu starts loading everything into swap, including Unity and any open terminals. If I don't catch a run-away program in time, there is nothing I can do but wait - it takes 4-5 minutes to switch to a command prompt eg. Ctrl-Alt-F2 where I can kill the offending process. Since my own stupidity is out of scope of this forum, how can I prevent Ubuntu from crashing via thrashing when I use up all of the available memory from a single offending program? At-home experiment*! Open a terminal, launch python and if you have numpy installed try this: >>> import numpy >>> [numpy.zeros((10**4, 10**4)) for _ in xrange(50)] * Warning: may have adverse effects, monitor the process via iotop or top to kill it in time. If not, I'll see you after your reboot.

• How can I deal with file association in different application(not in Nautilus)?

  Maybe i don't understand the system. Upgraded to (reinstalled) Ubuntu 11.04. Is there any way the applications can use something that i set in nautilus, or it's just a wrong idea about the usage? In nautilus the file association works great, easy, handy and so on... My first problem was when installed chromium. Downloaded a file, a popup ask for assocation, set nautilus. And it only opens folder, for any file show an error: it is not a direcrory. Ok, so i thought Google chrome changed, because previously .pdf open acrobat,.torrent open vuze and so on. But now i have to open nautilus on download folder with it, than select and open the preferable application by manually and can't use any automatism i used to. Then in gnome commander , it not followed the default association i set in nautilus. Ok maybe it is commander fault. use it's own. Then in calibre, the "read" use again this default "can't open its not a directory" error So it's seems to me the applications not using well this file associations or i really don't understand the aim of file associations system (mime,.desktop files,...) If there is no solution i think i have to search some program (if any exist's) which can identify and launch application and set as default instead nautilus.

• Connection String Incorrectly Formatted [migrated]

  I'm running into some issues. Every time I launch into debug mode and hit the "Create User" button, I'm getting an exception being thrown that is due to the Connection String either being in the wrong syntax or just wrong. Using Visual Studio 2010, project is .NET 3.5 with SQL 2008 Express. This is just a personal project that I'm testing some other things with, I know this generally isn't the recommended format but for a personal small project, I don't see the point in doing it any other way. The things I'm testing actually work :) Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True That doesn't work. Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True Neither does that. Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename='|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf';Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True And again, neither does that :/ However, rather than using "|Data directory| if I use the full path to the local DB file it works just fine and no exception is thrown, and I can read and write as I need. And just to cover all my bases, here is the button click event that creates the User. protected void btnAddUser_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Membership.CreateUser(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text); btnLogin_Click(sender, e); } So, what am I missing in regards to the |Data Directory|? • VMware Kernel Module Updater hangs on Ubuntu 13.04

  VMware Player has a nice auto-detection of kernel changes, and requests the user to compile the required modules in order to load them. This happens from time to time after a regular update of your system. Usually, the dialog of VMware Kernel Module Updater pops up, asks for root access authentication, and completes the compilation. VMware Player or Workstation checks if modules for the active kernel are available. In theory this is supposed to work flawlessly but in reality there are pitfalls occassionally. With the recent upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail and the latest kernel 3.8.0-21 the actual VMware Kernel Module Updater simply disappeared and the application wouldn't start as expected. When you launch VMware Player as super user (root) the dialog would stall like so: VMware Kernel Module Updater stalls while stopping the services Prior to version 5.x of VMware Player or version 7.x of VMware Workstation you would run a command like: $ sudo vmware-config.pl to resolve the module version conflict but this doesn't work anyway. Solution Instead, you have to execute the following line in a terminal or console window: $ sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all Those switches are (as of writing this article) not documented in the output of the --help switch. But VMware already documented this procedure in their knowledge base: VMware Workstation stops functioning after updating the kernel on a Linux host (1002411). Update As of today I had the first kernel upgrade to version 3.8.0-22 in Ubuntu 13.04. Don't even try it without vmware-modconfig...

• How to convince a client to switch to a framework *now*; also examples of great, large-scale php applications.

  Hi everybody. I'm about to start working on a very ambitious project that, in my opinion, has some great potential for what concerns the basic concept and the implementation ideas (implementation as in how this ideas will be implemented, not as in programming). The state of the code right now is unluckily subpar. It's vanilla php, no framework, no separation between application and visualization logic. It's been done mostly by amateur students (I know great amateur/student programmers, don't get me wrong: this was not the case though). The clients are really great, and they know the system won't scale and needs a redesign. The problem is, they would like to launch a beta ASAP and then think of rebuilding. Since just the basic functionalities are present now, I suggested it would be a great idea if we (we're a three-people shop, all very proficient) ported that code to some framework (we like CodeIgniter) before launching. We would reasonably be able to do that in < 10 days. Problem is, they don't think php would be a valid long-term solution anyway, so they would prefer to just let it be and fix the bugs for now (there's quite a bit) and then directly switch to some ruby/python based system. Porting to CI now will make future improvements incredibly easier, the current code more secure, changing the style - still being discussed with the designers - a breeze (reminder: there are database calls in template files right now); the biggest obstacle is the lack of trust in php as a valid, scalable technology. So well, I need some examples of great php applications (apart from facebook) and some suggestions on how to try to convince them to port soon. Again, they're great people - it's not like they would like ruby cause it's so hot right now; they just don't trust php since us cool programmers like bashing it, I suppose, but I'm sure going on like this for even one more day would be a mistake. Also, we have some weight in the decision process.

• Virtualization in Ubuntu 11.10

  Since Ubuntu 11.10 use a new kernel, it's very difficult to have a decent support for virtualization. VirtualBox doesn't support guest additions for ubuntu 11.10, so I can't copy to and from my ubuntu desktop and windows, which I absolutely require, plus FreeBSD seems not to be able to use DHCP without guest additions. Virt-manager instead gives an error on launch: Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon. Libvirt URI is: qemu:///system Verify that: - The 'libvirt-bin' package is installed - The 'libvirtd' daemon has been started - You are member of the 'libvirtd' group unable to connect to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock', libvirtd may need to be started: Permission denied Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/connection.py", line 1146, in _open_thread self.vmm = self._try_open() File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/connection.py", line 1130, in _try_open flags) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/libvirt.py", line 102, in openAuth if ret is None:raise libvirtError('virConnectOpenAuth() failed') libvirtError: unable to connect to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock', libvirtd may need to be started: Permission denied The problem is solved by running virt-manager as root, but I don't like that. • "Missing Operating System" after installing Ubuntu 12.04 from a CD on a Macbook Pro

  I followed this guide to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Macbook Pro 8,2 (late 2011): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation I used a CD. I synced the partition table on rEFIt, and it went fine. I do have an icon to boot on Linux, but when I launch it, after a few seconds I have "Missing Operating System" displayed, and that's all... How can I fix that? The only thing I see is, in the guide, it is mentioned this: On the last dialog of the installer, be sure to click the “Advanced” button and choose to install the boot loader (grub) to your root Ubuntu partition, for example /dev/sda3. This will be the only partition with the EXT4 file system. In Ubuntu 12.04 installation process, there is not such an option, but there is a dropdown menu to select where the grub bootloader should be installed. It was /dev/sda by default, but I selected my root Ubuntu partition (in my case, /dev/sda5). I got a warning message (but actually, it was the same warning message even when I selected /dev/sda), and I continued the installation... Thanks in advance for your help!

• How system services are started in 12.10?

  One thing that always confused me in Ubuntu was how system services are started. I know that Ubuntu uses Upstart and supports SysV, but which one is used to start the services? This matters when you want a "manual" start for a service. For example, on my system i have files for the following services either in /etc/init.d/<service> (Upstart) and /etc/init/<service>.conf (SysV): acpid, mysql, networking, qemu-kvm, ufw, libvirt-bin So if i want to disable MySQL execution at startup, i must use the Upstart way or the SysV way to disable it? Also, how can i tell which of those is really used to start a generic service? Edit The really doubt here is not how disable/enable services using SysV/Upstart. What really confuses me is that some services seem to be defined (and enabled) in SysV and Upstart at the same time. Is there any precedence between them (like if mysql is enabled in both launch it using SysV)? Or can it be the case that one tool uses the other in background?

As the next step, in order to enable timely delivery of our releases to you, we are pleased to announce the support for automatic download and install of StreamInsight 1.1 release via Microsoft Update starting this week. If you have a computer: that is subscribed to Microsoft Update (different from Windows Update) has StreamInsight 1.0 installed, and does not yet have StreamInsight 1.1 installed, Microsoft Update will automatically download and install the corresponding StreamInsight 1.1 update side by side with your existing StreamInsight 1.0 installation – across all supported 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems, across 11 supported languages, and across StreamInsight client and server SKUs. This is also supported in WSUS environments, if all your updates are managed from a corporate server (please talk to the WSUS administrator in your enterprise). • Running a Screen instance of a program as non-root

  I've got a dedicated server (Ubuntu 12.04, no GUI) set up to launch an instance of McMyAdmin and attach it to a screen instance every time I reboot the hardware. I have the command saved to root's crontab as: @reboot cd /var/MC_SVR && screen -dmS McMyAdmin ./MCMA2_Linux_x86_64 Problem being, though, I have a user set up specifically for FTP access to the server files so I don't always have to SSH into the machine. Since the server is being started as a root process, all the files it makes are, obviously, set with root as the owner. So I chown'd all the files and set them to ftpuser. Now I'm stuck with trying to get the process to start as ftpuser. I've tried doing the following but to no avail: cd /var/MC_SVR && su ftpuser - -c 'screen -dmS McMyAdmin ./MCMA2_Linux_x86_64' I try this in terminal and I get no errors or anything (in fact I never get anything unless it's a syntax error from su), but there's no screen instance to access and so I can assume the server never starts. So, what am I doing wrong? Or am I just not accessing the screen instance correctly since it's (supposed) to be launched by another user?

  I have seen many of what is called 'private servers' mmorpg (multiplayer online games), which uses stolen sources,modified executable, clients and server. People launch up their own server using VPS or dedicated server and distribute online service among players disclaiming it has educational purposes only, saying they are studying the game engine and selling items for players disclaming it as 'donations', so it seems like they are getting donations to keep studying. We all know it's a comercial method. All of it is copyrighted material from enterprise ABCD. (ABCD = Fictional name, I'm not mentioning names). At their website they include the following: "Private Server XXXX" does not allow/support any conection to any company/organization associated with the game "XXXX". If you are anyway affiliated with enterprise "XXXXXXX", or any other company/organization associated with the game "XXXX" you may not view/open/read/execute/play/download any part of "Private Server XXXX" nor view "Private Server XXXX" website, if any company/organization requests you to investigate our website/server, you may not view "Private SERVER XXXX" or execute any action mentioned above. Any person caught disobeting this disclaimer will be punish to the fulleste extent of law. Can this guys get arrested? Do they disclaimer works? If I'm owner of enterprise X and I know people stole my source and are using them but they have such disclaimer I'm not allowed to investigate them?

• Missing launcher after 12.04 upgrade

  I recently upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 and after doing some updates and such my application launcher and title bars (for window dialogues) are missing. Basically the entire unity GUI is missing! Not sure what happened so I installed gnome 3 and it was missing a launcher too, but did have title bars. In addition the bar found at the top that lets you know what's open and allows gnome extensions to be displayed is not interactive. I can't click, right click, alt + click (right or left), alt + super click (right or left) anywhere! I even installed an application menu from the gnome site and it is not interactive either. However, since there is no way to launch applications i have to use terminal and if i minimize an app it will disappear completely. Then i decided to try unity 2D and it is incredibly messed up. Black background, launcher is there but icons and top bar while on desktop are completely distorted. They're not just pixalated; they're all sorts of funky colors and when i open something from unity 2d launcher it will show it's opened in the launcher but nothing appears on my screen. When trying to view videos on youtube the video is distorted and looks just as unity 2d does. Strange enough: the audio works fine, just not videos. Pictures loads, but not ads that stream video. Any suggestions to get my launcher and the unity GUI back? I tried reinstalling gnome, unity 3d, and unity 2d from terminal. no change. also reinstalled unity desktop and tried resetting it: nothing happened.

• Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this?
