  • Test Driven Development For Complex Methods involving external dependency

    I am implementing a Service Contract for WCF Service. As per TDD I wrote a test case to just pass it using hardcoded values. After that I started to put real logic into my Service implementation. The actual logic relies on 3-4 external service and database. What should I do to my original test case that I wrote ? If i Keep it same in order to make test pass it will have to call several other external services. So I have question in general what should I do if I write a test case for a Business Facade first using TDD and later when I add real logic, if it involves external dependency.

  • Domain driven design value object, how to ensure a unique value

    Hi, I am building a questionnaire creator. A questionnaire consists of sections, sections consist of pages and pages consist of questions. Questionnaire is the aggregate root. Sections, pages and questions can have what are called shortcodes which should be unique within a questionnaire (but not unique within the database hence they are not strictly an identity). I intended to make the shortcode a value object and wanted to include the business rule that it should be unique within the questionnaire but I am unsure how to ensure that. My understanding is that the value object should not access the repository or service layer so how does it find out if it is unique? Thanks for any help. Darren

  • Too Many Public Methods Forced by Test Driven Development

    A very specific question from a novice to TDD: I seperate my tests and my app into different packages. Thus, most of my app methods have to be public for tests to access them. As I progress, it becomes obvious that some methods could become private, but if I make that change, the tests that access them won't work. Am I missing a step, or doing something wrong, or is this just one downfall of TDD?

  • Design view disappeared from Interface Builder

    All of a sudden, the visual design window disappeared from my Interface Builder. It is a regular UIView, has some UIImageView, UILabel, and UIButtons on it. When I open IB, I can see the document window (with File's Owner, First Responder and View in it), Library and Inspector, but the visual design window disappeared. Double click on "View" in the document window doesn't do anything. If I go to List mode, I can see all the components on the view, but just can no longer find the visual design window. All other XIB can open just fine, only this XIB lost its design window. First I thought maybe it was hidden somewhere on the screen. Tried all kinds of things, even rebooting the computer, but nothing helped. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance! By the way, I'm running SDK 3.2 Beta 3.

    I am doing my first steps with TDD. The problem is (as probably with everyone starting with TDD), I never know very well what kind of unit tests to do when I start working in my projects. Let's assume I want to write a Stack class with the following methods(I choose it as it's an easy example): Stack<T> - Push(element : T) - Pop() : T - Seek() : T - Count : int - IsEmpty : boolean How would you approch this? I never understood if the idea is to test a few corner cases for each method of the Stack class or start by doing a few "use cases" with the class, like adding 10 elements and removing them. What is the idea? To make code that uses the Stack as close as possible to what I'll use in my real code? Or just make simple "add one element" unit tests where I test if IsEmpty and Count were changed by adding that element? How am I supposed to start with this?

  • Can we have ExtJs components inside a Flex driven page

    Hi, I am working on a page which mainly consists of Charts and Grids. Thought that Flex would be the best fit with some cool effects. But however, I now feel that ExtJs grid looks better than Flex data grid. My question is whether there is any possibility / mechanism to embed Ext JS grid into a Flex page. Lets say my main page has a Flex tab panel. In first tab, I would like to see 'Flex Chart' and in second tab I would want to see 'ExtJS grid'. I would also want to know of any Flex Data grid plugin (if exists), which looks/works just like Ext Js grid. Thanks & Regards Shafi

    Over the last few years, I can't count how many web front ends I've had to create over a relatively simple database schema to fasciliate data entry. I have to imagine that someone out there has written a framework I can use to simplify the creation of these kind of simple GUIs. Doing a quick google, the following look like the key players in .net: ASP.Net dynamic data framework SubSonic NakedObjects for .net Has anyone worked with any of these and have any preferences? More importantly, are there other frameworks that would be good to evaluate in this space?

  • jQuery-driven app. won't work without alert()

    I have seen a lot of articles on this, but none dealing with jQuery, so here I go... I am implementing a version of a script from http://javascript-array.com/scripts/jquery_simple_drop_down_menu/ into an existing application; however, I cannot get it to work without adding alert('msg...') as the first method within the $(document).ready() call. This has nothing to do with load time... no matter how long I wait, the menu does not work.   • NSFetchedResultsController not processing certain section driven moves

    I utilize a NSFetchedResultsController (frc) with a Core Data store. I implement all the frc delegate methods. The table is sporadically updated by background threads. All the inserts, deletes and updates work fine, with the exception that updates to the frc's index key for rows toward to the bottom of the table (50 rows), do not result in a section move. e.g. if "name" is the index key and the name "Victor" is changed to "Alex", the victor row now shows the name Alex, but is not moved to the top of the table alongside all other names starting with A. As I noted, this is only for rows towards the bottom of the table. If a row like "Andy" is changed to "Ben", the move is indeed processed correctly by the frc. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated. I do not use a frc cache. Thanks

  • Message driven bean not responding until client method is complete

    Hi, I have a MDB deployed on Jboss 4.2.2 and a client on the same server that produces messages and expects a reply from the MDB via a temporary queue created before the message is sent. When I run the client, I see that it creates the message, puts it in the queue and waits for the reply (no problem so far) ... but when I check in the logs I see that the timeout is reached and no response is received. When the timeout occurs and the client's method is complete the MDB starts processing the message that should have been processed the moment the client put it in the queue. As a consequence of this timing issue, when the MDB tries to reply to the temp queue, it fails since the client is already gone. If I run the same client from a remote server, I have no problem... The MDB picks up the message from the queue right away and the client receives its response right after the processing is complete. I'm using container managed transactions. I suspect it has something to do with that... I think the client's "send message/receive reply" might be all be considered a transaction before it commits to put the message in the queue... but I'm not sure if this is correct. If this is the case, why did I not see the same behavior from the remote client? is client managed transaction the default setting and that's what my remote server was using? Any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance! PJ

    I have inherited a website that needs the password changed that accesses the database. I can see that there are two tables within the database but neither of them have username or password info. The previous web guy moved out of the country and can't be reached. I am not up-to-speed enough to figure this out. I have gone through all the files to try and find the answer but can't get it. It's hosted by goDaddy.com and I have changed the passwords there but it didn't change this login info. www.executivehomerents.com/cpanel <-this brings up the prompt for the username & password which I won't give out but the page only gives you 5 choices and none of them deal with changing the password. It seems terribly inefficient to poll for changes, especially when the number of projects increases and the polling period is set to a very low value (for example, 30 seconds).

  • Creating a virtual, data-driven section of a Wordpress-powered site

    Hello all, I want to create a plugin for wordpress to automatically serve pages containing data pulled from a provider's API. The API returns one or more records containing data for that record and I simply want to have the plugin intercept the request, call the API with parameters pulled from the request URI and display the data using a template that I can either let them upload to the server or let them copy and paste into the plugins admin settings. For example, I may want one of my wordpress installations to show products pulled from such an API under the url "example.com/products". The plugin would catch that request, extract the variables from the URL, call the API and render the template with the returned results. I'd like to avoid requiring editing the .htaccess file like some caching plugins do. Some of the admins of these pages won't know how to do that or simply won't have access to the .htaccess file.     Hi Team, I have an interesting database design problem that I formulated while travelling by a bus, coming back from my home. Design a normalized database for a bus ticketing system (not reservation system). In each trip, the conductor of the bus will give tickets to its passengers after collecting fare from them. Passengers travel from a various source places to various destination places. The system must be able to give a report of the places for which the number of passengers was more than 2. Suppose the stops for the bus are L1,L2, L3 and L4 Suppose passenger P1 travels from L1 to L4. P2 travels from L2 to L4. P3 travels from L3 to L4. The report should list only (L3-L4) for which it has more than 2 travelers. Can you please help me to solve the following problems 1) Design a normalized database 2) Write a query for the report 3) Is there any site that gives these kinds of interesting database design questions and answers?   • Where to include business logic in a domain driven architecture

    I'm trying to learn effective DDD practices as I go, but had a fundamental question I wanted to get some clarity on. I am using ASP.NET WebForms and I am creating a situation where a user places an order. Upon order submission, the code-behind retrieves the user, builds the order from the inputs on the form, calls the User.PlaceOrder() method to perform add the order object to the user's order collection, and calls the repository to save the record to the database. That is fairly simply and straightforward. Now I need to add logic to send an order confirmation email, and I'm not really sure the proper place to put this code or where to call it. In the olden days I would simply put that code in the code-behind and call it at the same time I was building the order, but I want to get a step closer to solid proper architecture so I wanted to get some information.     I'm learning TDD, and I have a question about private / protected variables. My question is: If a function I want to test is operating on a private variable, how should I test it? Here is the example I'm working with: I have a class called Table that contains an instance variable called internalRepresentation that is a 2D array. I want to create a function called multiplyValuesByN that multiplies all the values in the 2D array by the argument n. So I write the test for it (in Python): def test_multiplyValuesByN (self): t = Table(3, 3) # 3x3 table, filled with 0's t.set(0, 0, 4) # Set value at position (0,0) to 4 t.multiplyValuesByN(3) assertEqual(t.internalRepresentation, [[12, 0, 0], [0, 0, 0], [0, 0, 0]]) Now, if I make internalRepresentation private or protected, this test will not work. How am I supposed to write the test so it doesn't depend on internalRepresentation but still tests that it looks correct after calling multiplyValuesByN?

  • Best Design for creating Historic Reports on GAE

    My App requires Daily reports based on various user activities. My current design does not sum the daily totals in database, which means I must compute them everytime. For example A report that shows Top 100 users based on the number of submissions they have made on a given day. For such a report If I have 50,000 users, what is the best way to create daily report? How to create monthly and yearly report with such data? If this is not a good design, then how to deal with such design decision when the metrics of the report are not clear during db design and by the time it is clear we already have huge data with limited parameters (fields). Please advice.
