  • ORM vs SQL XML, very simple middle-tier

    I know it is rather heated question. But anyway I'd like to hear opinions of those in Stackoverflow. Given that XML support is quite good in SQL Server 2005/2008, and there's no concern about database independency, why one need Linq-to-SQL, Entity Framework, NHibernate and the likes, which are quite complex and awkward in advanced use-cases, if by using POCOs, XmlSerializer, and stored procedures which process XML, one can achieve a lot less complex middle-tier?   • how to update tables' structures keeping current data

    I have an c# application that uses tables from sqlserver 2008 database (runs on standalone pc with local sqlserver). Initially i install database on this pc with some initial data (there are some tables that application uses and the user doesn't touch). The question is - how can i upgrade this database after user created some new data without harming it (i continue developing and can add some new tables or stored procedures or add some columns to existing tables).   • Is it necessary to create ASP.NET 4.0 SQL session state database, distinct from existing ASP.NET 2.0

    Is the ASP.NET 4.0 SQL session state mechanism backward-compatible with the ASP.NET 2.0 schema for session state, or should/must we create a separate and distinct session state database for our ASP.NET 4.0 apps? I'm leaning towards the latter anyway, but the 2.0 database seems to just work, though I'm wondering if there are any substantive differences between the ASPState database schema / procedures between the 2.0 and 4.0 versions of ASP.NET. Thank you.

I need to run a report that would return how many articles of each type there is per every day, like this: date | count(type="A") | count(type="B") | count(type="C") ----------------------------------------------------- 2010-01-01 | 2 | 1 | 0 2010-01-02 | 5 | 6 | 7 Currently I am running 3 queries for every type and then manually merging the results select date, count(id) from article where type="A" group by date Is it possible to do this in one query? (in pure sql, no stored procedures or anything like that). Thanks

    Is there any way to export a Microsoft SQL Server database to an sql script? I'm looking for something which behaves similarly to mysqldump, taking a database name, and producing a single script which will recreate all the tables, stored procedures, reinsert all the data etc. I've seen http://vyaskn.tripod.com/code.htm#inserts, but I ideally want something to recreate everything (not just the data) which works in a single step to produce the final script.
