• Dualboot Asus n56v (ubuntu / win 7 x64) - ubuntu doesn't detect partition table made by windows

  I have an Asus n56v and I've got troubles installing Ubuntu 12.04 x64. I already have installed Windows 7 x64! The hard drive is: Hitachi HTS547575A9E384 My problem: The installation program doesn't recognize the already existing partitions and is offering only options where there are partitions. Can someone help me out? Is this an ACPI/IDE conflict, missing driver or conflict with Windows 7? (I'm not an expert on Linux, only working sometimes with it.) I now tried out some options concerning EFI with a GTP-table. Everything worked but I wasn't able to fix a dual boot (Windows boot loader) nor with GRUB2. The laptop is still having a BIOS, but is able to boot DVDs/CDs in EFI-mode. Now I try to avoid EFI and GTP using the old windows MBR style. I reinstalled Windows, so far no problem. When I want to try to install Ubuntu, it doesn't detect the already existing partition table. It is just showing me an empty space for the whole disk. Other threads like Ubuntu 12.04 does not see windows already install on my computer (dual installation) don't help me out. os-prober shows me a correct result. I don't know how to deal with gdisk as shown in Installer doesn't detect existing partition table/windows 7 partition. I have 750GB for the whole disk. I'm using: 90GB for Windows reserved partition + system partition, 500GB for data and the rest should be for SWAP and linux-system. How can I make Ubuntu detect the partition table?

• Quickbooks Error - Can't turn off auto updates

  My company uses quickbooks pro 2002 and unfortunately they won't upgrade at this time, the program keeps freezing and giving methe error: This action cannot be completed because this program is busy.. Then asks to switch or retry, I tracked it down to being an issue with IE since it's an old program and can't use the new versions of IE (the program uses IE for it's interface for some STUPID reason). Everyone says to disable auto updates but the problem is that I can't get to the options area to disable the updates (the options area uses IE!!!) so I'm screwed, I have to sit there and click retry 40-50 times several times a day and it's driving me nutz. I've been looking online for days but have not found a solution to this predicament. Is there a way to disable auto updates through the configuration files? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Explanation of nodev and nosuid in fstab

  I see those two options constantly suggested on the web when someone describes how to mount a tmpfs or ramfs. Often also with noexec but I'm specifically interested in nodev and nosuid. I basically hate just blindly repeating what somebody suggested, without real understanding. And since I only see copy/paste instructions on the net regarding this, I ask here. This is from documentation: nodev - Don't interpret block special devices on the filesystem. nosuid - Block the operation of suid, and sgid bits. But I would like a practical explanation what could happen if I leave those two out. Let's say that I have configured tmpfs or ramfs(without these two mentioned options set) that is accessible(read+write) by a specific (non-root)user on the system. What can that user do to harm the system? Excluding the case of consuming all available system memory in case of ramfs

• Why does my laptop shut down, does it get too hot?

  When I play games, or use powerful-applications such as Autodesk Maya, my laptop just shuts down, ofcourse without any warning at all. This is what I've tried so far: Cleaned my fan, completely! Checked if I have enough RAM and good enough graphics card, and I do. (6 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GT540M with 2 GB VRAM) None of these options worked. Even tried to clean my fan twice! Now, I have some options I could also try, but I don't know if that have anything to do with it or not. I was thinking reinstalling my Windows 7, because maybe it has to do something wrong with the installation? My laptop is about a year old, and this problem just happend out of no where, short after I downgraded from Windows 8 Release Preview to my original Windows 7.

• Developing an iOS app for a single device - licensing issue

  I'm developing an iOS app for a museum as a freelancer. It's a very simple video player, to be installed on a single iPad that will be part of a permanent exhibition, basically acting as a kiosk. It turns out the iPad is the ideal device for that if you're looking for a small and affordable touchscreen. The problem is: as far as I can tell, none of the Apple Developer Program options available will allow me to distribute an app like that. The relevant options are (from the link above): iOS Developer Program ($99/year) Select this program if you would like to distribute apps on the App Store as an individual, sole proprietor, company, organization, government entity or educational institution. iOS Developer Enterprise Program ($299/year) Select this program if you would like to develop proprietary apps for internal distribution within your company, organization, government entity or educational institution. The regular program requires distribution through the App Store. The Enterprise version is for internal distribution within my own organization. Neither is the case here! It seems like I'm doomed to violate Apple's terms of service (and I can think of at least two ways of doing that: jailbreaking, or changing the iPad's date so it won't know the provisioning profile expired). Is that really so, or did I get the descriptions wrong? Has anyone here been in a similar situation?

• Can I make the shift+right-click the default right-click action on tasks in the task menu?

  When I right click on a running task in my start menu I usually get 3 options: Launch a new copy of this - I don't use this Pin this program to the taskbar - I don't use this Close window - I use this. Lots. So much so that in Windows XP I used to right click and press 'c'. Which I can no longer do because while it hilights the close MenuItem, it doesn't actually invoke it. If I shift+right-click on the task, I get the old menu upon which I can just hit C. This old menu is also generally much more useful as it has many more options I use considerably more frequently. Is there a way I can make this menu pop up as the default right-click menu? This is also proving to be a real pain to google. As I'm always up for improving my goo-fu, if you do google a fix to this problem I would appreciate it if you could share the keywords/phrases used.

  From the diff manpage: -b, --ignore-space-change ignore changes in the amount of white space -w, --ignore-all-space ignore all white space From this, I infer that the difference between the -b and -w options must be that -b is sensitive to the type of whitespace (tabs vs. spaces).   Am trying to use laravel to build a site but my routes all redirect to the homepage. Apache error logs show this AH00124: Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use 'LimitInternalRecursion' to increase the limit if necessary. • Specify next boot to be into safe mode/WinRE via commandline?

  As the title says.I would like a script that tells windows that the next boot should be into safe mode or atleast that the "F8" menu should be presented next boot.Booting into WinRE(Launch startup repair...) is problably even more un-doable.I looked over bcdedit options but did'nt see anything like this.I know msconfig has an option for safe boot but it's gui only. Currently if i wan't to boot into safe mode or launch WinRE then i have to forcefully restart my pc first for those options to be presented during boot(F8 does not bring up the safe mode option under normal conditions). Im using Windows 7 x64.

• Enabling Compiz Viewport Switcher key bindings

  I'm running compiz 0.8.2 with compizconfig on Scientific Linux 6.2 with Gnome 2.28.2. In the compizconfig "General Options" I have "Desktop Size" set as follows: Horizontal Virtual Size: 6 Vertical Virtual Size: 1 Number of Desktops: 1 This gets me the layout I want, i.e. 6 workspaces in a horizontal layout. Ctrl-alt-cursor-keys work fine for switching between them. However, I can't figure out how to get key bindings for specific workspaces. I've tried enabling "Viewport Switcher" in compizconfig, and tried various combinations both in "Number-based viewport switching" and "Go to specific viewport", to no apparent effect. My first thought was that something else was eating the specific key bindings I chose, but I think I've tried every combination of shift, control, alt and super (i.e., the Windows key) by now. I tried setting 6 desktops under "General Options" instead of one desktop with horizontal virtual size 6, but that doesn't seem to make a difference either. What am I missing?

• Windows 8.1 - unfixable grub

  I have a Gigabyte laptop that came with secure boot and windows 8. After a bit of battling, I managed to get my dual boot with Ubuntu 13.10.. Anyway, I upgraded zindows to 8.1, now grub is gone. I restarted from a live CD and chrooted to my drive. I used boot-repair multiple times (with successful output) both in default and with some advanced options; also reinstalled grub manually... Each time it tries once to boot to grub but gives a message for a very short amount of time. I recorded it and it is a regular bios message "Rebbot and Select proper Boot device of Insert Boot media in selected boot device and press a key" I even tried something called EasyBCD under winblows, it shows the correct boot options, but same there, it is unable to make the linux partition fire up. Anyway, no way to boot my linux box. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? No need to redirect me to another post with grub reinstall or boot-repair, seen them all... I am thinking of trying this other boot loader, refind, to see if it works http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/index.html Also re-reading this bios message, I'm thinking my partition might not have a boot flag anymore... I'll try that too with parted. Although both grub and win 8 are supposed to fire up from the same boot partition (the EFI one) Please help! thx

• Blank screen after grub menu

  I just rebooted an Ubuntu Server 10.04. After choosing boot options in the grub menu, though, it just displays a black screen with the blinking white underscore in the upper-left corner. The machine has had (hardware) trouble with networking before, but the problem remains after 10 minutes, so I don't think it's the problem now. Booting into recovery mode or using earlier kernels yields the same problem. This also happens if I boot from another hard-drive. I haven't yet tried to boot from CD as the machine lacks a CD reader. How should I diagnose the problem? Update: My boot options are: recordfail insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 567[redacted] linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-29-generic root=UUID=567[redacted] ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-29-generic Update: Also, I cannot access the virtual terminals (ctrl+alt+Fn).

• I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • Live CD installer gets stuck with a grayed out forward button.

  I have a CD with Ubuntu 10.10 and a laptop with Ubuntu 8.10. The laptop had all sorts of crud on it, and anything I wanted to keep was backed up on an external drive, so I was happy to do a wipe and reinstall instead of an update. So after a bit of faffing about trying to work out how to get the thing to boot from the CD drive, I did that. So the screen comes up with the choice: the options are Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. I choose to install and to overwrite my current installation. So far so good. I then get a progress bar labelled something like copying files (I forget the exact wording) and further options to fill in for my location, keyboard locale, username and password. On each of these screens there are forward and back buttons. On the last screen (password), the forward button is greyed out. Well, I think to myself, no doubt it will become active when that copying files progress bar completes. The progress bar never completes. It hangs. And the label changes from copying files to the chirpy ready when you are. The forward button remains greyed out. The back button is as unhelpful as you'd expect it to be. And there's nothing else to click. We have reached an impasse. I tried restarting the laptop, to test whether it actually was properly installed. It wasn't. I tried to run Ubuntu live from the CD, to test whether the disk was damaged. That wouldn't work either, but I suspect it's just because the laptop is old and has a slow disk drive. I'm typing this question on another computer using the Ubuntu live CD and it's working fine. So there's nothing wrong with the CD.

  I had Windows 7 on my laptop (factory setting), because of some performance issues, I decided to use recovery options to restore it to its factory condition but I don't know what has happened or what I have done that the whole operating system was gone after playing around with recovery options from the boot menu. I couldn't find Windows, so I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. Last time I had Ubuntu on it, it was not really compatible with laptop's configuration and I had a bit of problems trying to do normal tasks I used to do on Windows. Now I want to make sure that Windows and its drivers are gone so that I can try to install a newer version of Ubuntu or Windows. • Revert a VM client from within the VM Client - is it possible?

  I am creating a test VM client for our QA department. Once it's installed, my options will be: Use a snapshot Use non persistent disk on the hard disk. For either options, I can give the role of QA_DEP the ability to log to vCenter and go back/power-off the client - so they can return to their clean machine. My question: is it possible to have that ability without using vCenter? What If I want that on a Client reboot - it will return to it's initial/clean state? The clients are not gonna be heavy loaded.

• In Outlook 2010, can you add "Categories" to the "New Email" Ribbon?

  I couldn't figure out how to do this in Outlook 2007, and I was hoping I could do it in Outlook 2010... I want the ability to quickly apply a category when composing a new email (typically a "Waiting For..." category) for things that need a response. It is possible to apply a category by clicking the "Options" ribbon, then the little arrow under the More Options section - but why can't I get the nice big "Categories" drop-down that's available in the "Tags" section of the main Outlook window. There are about a kabillion commands in the "Customize Ribbon" dialog box for the New Mail window, but I couldn't find anything about Categories. Should I just give up?

• .htaccess causes 403 error

  I have a working website on a free shared server. I decided to hire a dedicated server and purchase a domain for my website. I started uploading the files but things aren't working the way they should. First of all .htaccess is not working, however I set AllowOverride from None to All in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> I restarted the server of course. I enabled mod_rewrite: a2enmod rewrite and restarted the server. This change causes a 403 forbidden access error which I am unable to work out. If I change the All back to None then .htaccess is ignored so instead of loading the website the file hierarchy is loaded (the main page is index4.php which should be opened by .htaccess). If I rename index4.php to index.php the website loads, just fyi. The permissions on the file is 600. If I change it to 444 I get 500 Internal Server Error. I checked the logs and I see many errors of this: Permission denied: file permissions deny server access: /var/www/index.html

• Boot process enter an infinite loop after installing Ubuntu 11.04 together with Windos 7 and XP

  I have a new computer ACER Aspire X3960 which came with Widows 7 preinstalled. I made a new partition where I installed Windows XP and then I installed in new logical partitions (a Swap, a / and a /home partition) Ubuntu 11.04. At the end of the process, the computer enters the very first screen where it says "press DEL to enter BIOS setup, press F12 to enter BOOT options". After a few seconds, the screen goes blank, the computer beeps and then it presents the same screen again. It doesn't even ever go to the grub options of which operating system I want to start. It just loops there forever. I tried to fix the (eventually damaged) grub following these instructions (unfortunately in german) http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB_2/Reparatur from a LiveUSB, which I'm also using to post this question. • WIFI looses connection with AR9285 - have to disconnect / connect to regain internet?

  I have a G73JW laptop using Ubuntu 12.04. It has an Atheros AR9285 card. While wifi seems to work fine most of the time, about every hour or two it will loose the connection to the internet. The connection will appear to be connected still to the wireless router, but internet access is gone. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the access point solves the problem, as does disabling and reenabling the adapter via the hardware keyboard shortcut. How might this be solved so the connection is stable and doesn't drop? I've mainly done C# desktop development (with a little python and Silverlight) for 5 or 6 years and I'm trying to decide whether to start learning JavaScript\HTML or to moving into a role where I do less coding and more tech. lead\management role. With all the talk around HTML5\JavaScript, the rise of mobile and the changes with Windows 8 (metro at least) I wonder if I should stick with coding to get some experience in these areas before moving on. But at the same time if I decide stick with coding for a ‘couple more years’ I will probably be faced with the same situation with some other new\interesting technology that I feel I should learn before moving on. I feel if I stick just with coding I'm limiting my career options but if I move to tech. lead\management I will loose my coding skills. Is going one direction or the other going to limiting my career options in the future? I know that there is no real answer to this question so I’m really just looking for some thoughts from others and perhaps experiences from other people that faced similar situations. Thanks
