• Autorelease with elements in a UITableViewCell - memory leak

  In my 'cellForRowAtIndexPath' method for a UITableView delegate, I'm allocating a cell if it doesn't exist, and in this cell, I'm creating a new activity spinner like so: UIActivityIndicatorView *actView = [[[UIActivityIndicatorView alloc] initWithActivityIndicatorStyle:UIActivityIndicatorViewStyleGray ] autorelease]; I'm using Leaks to detect memory leaks in my program, and for some reason, this is coming up as a leak, even though it's autoreleasing. The cell itself is also autoreleasing. Has anyone had experience with autoreleasing variables coming up as leaks in the Leaks instrument, and how to tackle these problems? Also, if it helps, this is the history Leaks is displaying for this memory location. It looks like it at some point gets an additional retain message? This is not being done in my code.

  Hello another stupid question regarding leaks and also NSURLConnection. How do i release it? Is it enough if i release in the following 2 methods? (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection Because in instruments it shows me the line where I alloc my connection as the source of leaking. OK I don't get it. After the following code my urlConnection has a retain count of 2. WTF? NSURLConnection *urlConnection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest: urlRequest delegate: self]; This is the line that instruments points me to. I find this very weird.

• How to display/define Mirror/Stripping pairs with mdadm

  I want to make a standard linux software Raid10 over 4 HDD. The server has 4HDDs, 2 pairs from different vendors in order to avoid batch problems. I want to have the mirror over two different Vendors, and then the Stripe over the mirror pairs. I could do that by manually creating Raid1/0, but mdadm supports Raid level 10. • How to read an image from disk and block until its read?

  I'm loading 5 images from disk but I want the 1st image I read to show as soon as possible. Right now I do UIImage *img = [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:path]; in a for loop but since imageWithContentsOfFile:path isn't blocking all 5 images wind up getting read from disk before the first one will appear (because they're all using up I/O). I confirmed this by just load one and it appeared on screen faster than if I load all 5. I'd like to load the 1st image and block until its fully read and shown before loading the next 4 or load the 1st one and be notified when its done before loading the next 4 but I can't figure out a way to do it. None of the 'WithContentsOfFile' methods for data or image block and they don't notify or have delegate methods. Any suggestions? Thanks

• Silverlight Calling an HttpHandler

  I have a Silverlight application that I'm trying to get to invoke an HttpHandler by using WebClient. I have the HttpHandler just sending an email that says test when invoked. If I hit it via a browser, I get the email. However, using a WebClient object with a delegate, I can't seem to get it to connect. I'm going to try a plain old WinForms app to test my code out later this evening, but wasn't sure if I was missing something in my Silverlight app. Any ideas?

  We are getting ready to make a major revision in our Web Application architecture which currently is running on JBoss 4.2. At first we were looking at moving from 4.2 to JBoss 6 but after some research tomcat may be a better solution for us. My first question is their anything that JBoss can do that tomcat cannot do assuming you are using the correct plugins. We do not really use EJB's in our solution and it would appear there are simple plugins for web services, JMX and other features. Tomcat appears to have much better support, faster upgrade cycles and many, many books. Since there is less to the system it also seems much easier to support from an admin point of view. What am I missing? The main features we want to enable are better clustering support and session replication / persistence.   I had a list of tuples where every tuple consists of two integers and I wanted to sort by the 2nd integer. After looking in the python help I got this: sorted(myList, key=lambda x: x[1]) which is great. My question is, is there an equally succinct way of doing this in C# (the language I have to work in)? I know the obvious answer involving creating classes and specifying an anonymous delegate for the whole compare step but perhaps there is a linq oriented way as well. By using this data I want to do some database interaction and storing the result in a dataset and pass this data set to same view again to show up in some Grid. I know the first part in conventional Asp.net can be done by raising the event through delegate but don't know how to do that in MVC.

I need to retain the closures as there are a lot more in the code base that I am porting.

• Ideas for loading initial data in an iPhone application?

  Hi all, In my app I want to load some initial data to show the user how it works. The app uses a CoreData managed sqllite db. SO far I've thought of 3 options: Write code into a class to programmatically create the data. Create a xml file in the apps resources and load through a NSXmlParser whose delegate creates the entries in the sqllite db. Same as option #2, but use a json file and bring in a 3rd party lib to read it. Are there other options I have not found yet? and given that I'm talking about perhaps 6 records per table when there are 3 tables, which would you choose?

• iPhone SDK - keep data in modal view

  Hi all, I've got a modal view loaded the following way: ModalViewController *modalController = [[ModalViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ModalViewController" bundle:nil]; searchController.delegate = self; [self.navigationController presentModalViewController:modalController animated:YES]; [modalController release]; When the modal view appears, "viewDidLoad" is called. When I dismiss the modal view via [self.navigationController dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; the method "viewDidUnload" ISN'T called, but the next time I let the modal view appear, "viewDidLoad" is called again. My problem now is that I'm creating an NSArray in the modal view's "viewDidLoad" - and as I'm fetching the data from the web, I would like to do it only once. But this way, it's fetched every time... Any hints how I could achieve that the data is only fetched once? I would really like to do it in the modal view and not in the parent and provide the array as parameter to the modal view... Thanks!

  I'm writing a GUI for MongoDB using Cocoa. It's going well, but I don't know how to make KVO properties that would be lazily loaded. How does one handle that? For instance, viewing the documents in a Mongo collection. The collection might have a million items in it. I suspect I shouldn't be downloading the full 2-5 GiB of data to my Cocoa app, then format and display 20 rows. How does one implement that? I called my project Mongo Explorer, available on GitHub. Specifically, how would I code MECollection#reload to be lazy? Do I need to implement a data source delegate for my NSTableView?

• Redis connection issue

  We are currently experiencing a lot of Redis errors with the message Unable to connect: read error on connection, trying next server We run Redis on FreeBSD using PHP Redis and we have a hard time reproducing the error on Ubuntu so this might be a hint. There's a long-running issue on that topic on github. Basically we get a socket from the operating system with a call to connect(host, port, timeout) in phpredis, but when we do a select(db_index) afterwards, we get an exception. Could there be an issue with persistance? I assume that connect does nothing in the background and select tries to access the connection, which is actually closed. We don't run into a timeout. We tried tuning TIME_WAIT without success. Any other ideas on where the problem might come from? What is the best way to track the issue down? dtrace maybe? Update We are currently looking into our BGSAVE settings. Interestingly it takes half a second and more to create a fork for the process which regularly writes the data to disk (persistence) and maybe redis can't respond to connect() requests during that timespan.

• RAID degraded on Ubuntu server

  We're having a very weird issue at work. Our Ubuntu server has 6 drives, set up with RAID1 as follows: /dev/md0, consisting of: /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/md1, consisting of: /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/md2, consisting of: /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 /dev/md3, consisting of: /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/md4, consisting of: /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1 As you can see, md0, md1 and md2 all use the same 2 drives (split into 3 partitions). I also have to note that this is done via ubuntu software raid, not hardware raid. Today, the /md0 RAID1 array shows as degraded - it is missing the /dev/sdb1 drive. But since /dev/sdb1 is only a partition (and /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdb3 are working fine), it's obviously not the drive that's gone AWOL, it seems the partition itself is missing. How is that even possible? And what could we do to fix it?   i want to block the main thread until something else is done in the background. i used: result=[self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(calculate:) withObject:expression]; just bellow this line I am using result: [self use:result]; i dont want to use result until it is available. to achieve this I implemented calculate: { [[(AppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate] queue] waitUntilAllOperationsAreFinished]; calculating result... } and still, the result is used before it is calculated. so, i didnt block the main thread. pls help me do that. thanks

• Generic Abstract Singleton with Custom Constructor in C#

  I want to write a generic singleton with an external constructor. In other words the constructor can be modified. I have 2 designs in my mind but I don't know whether they are practical or not. First one is to enforce derived class' constructor to be non-public but I do not know if there is a way of it? Second one is to use a delegate and call it inside the constructor? It isn't necessarily to be a constructor. The reason I chose custom constructor is doing some custom initializations. Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

  Hi, I have a table which I'm trying to do a pricing list, that auto-computes the tax component.. I'm getting the value from price_1, applying a math cal, and saving it to tax_1. I could read the number of the end of the id, but hopefully there is a cleaner way with jQuery. E.g. I would have a lot of fields like.. price_1 price_2 price_3 tax_1 tax_2 tax_3 etc... I can use the following code to call jQuery on change of a price, and get the value of that price. • iPhone: TabBarController as second level of Navigation Controller

  I'm new to iphone development. I've read tutorials about implementing a tab bar controller on the window (eg as the main controller for the app). But how can I create a tab bar controller as a 'standalone' UIViewController that can be called by a navigation bar controller? Basically my navigation bar controller has an array of UIViewControllers that it displays in the table and then loads the appropriate view/controller when a user selects an item. Now I want one of these loaded views/controllers to be a tab bar controller. How can I do this? I'm not sure how to create a tab bar controller on its own without having an outlet/instance in the application delegate. Hope that made sense. Thanks.

  Hi, I want to make a dictionary out of list in a way, that the list becomes keys and values would be empty. I have following code Dictionary<XmlTest, int?> testBattery = new XmlTests().GetRandomTestBattery(id). ToDictionary(k => k, v => null); But I am getting the error "Cannot convert lambda expression to type System.Collections.Generic.IEqualityComparer' because it is not a delegate type" Any ideas how could I fix it? (I know I could iterate through and fill the dict one element at a time, but I simply want to use something more elegant)
