• Uploadify Flash Uploader and Random UPLOAD_ERR_CANT_WRITE errors

  I am using Uploadify to provide progress bar support for file uploads on a PHP app I built. It works perfectly for a few uploads,then every few uploads it fails and the data from the $_FILES array reveals an UPLOAD_ERR_CANT_WRITE error. (Error code 7). I ran Paros proxy between my browser and the server to see the difference between a passing and failing request. The only difference was the content separator for the multi-part post which changes every time. I would conclude this was fully a server error, except with a plain jane form, I cannot reproduce the error. I am not a server guy, so please let me know what information is needed to troubleshoot this and I will update the question with those details. I did place these lines in the .htaccess, but to know avail. • Proliant RAID 1 Rebuild Questions

  I have a HP Proliant ML350 G5 server that experienced a power supply failure overnight. The power supply was replaced but unfortunately it got restarted with only 1 disk in the RAID 1 set plugged in. (The raid controller is the build in E200i). The raid BIOS then said on start-up that it had entered Interim Recovery Mode. However I would have expected it to still start up with only the 1 drive. The bios however says that it cannot find a C: drive and enters a reboot loop polling the other boot devices. First question is, is this normal behaviour not to start up on 1 disk? The second drive was then plugged in (all drives are ok) and the raid bios started an automatic rebuild on that disk. This appears to be a background process as there is no progress shown. However based on the light flashing it looks like it is working. My second question is how long will this rebuild take? (36GB 15K SAS drive). I cannot see any error messages and it looks like it is rebuilding the drive ok, but the computer still will not start-up. It still says during the boot up process that the C: drive is not found. If I wait for the rebuild to finish, is it likely to fix itself and find the C: drive? Or is there some other problem here?

• Reverse SSH Tunnel

  I am trying to forward web traffic from a remote server to my local machine in order to test out some API integration (tropo, paypal, etc). Basically, I'm trying to setup something similar to what tunnlr.com provides. I've initiated the ssh tunnel with the command $ssh –nNT –R :7777:localhost:5000 user@server Then I can see that server has is now listening on port 7777 with user@server:$netstat -ant | grep 7777 tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:7777 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN tcp6 0 0 ::1:7777 :::* LISTEN $user@server:curl localhost:7777 Hello from local machine So that works fine. The curl request is actually served from the local machine. Now, how do I enable server.com:8888 to be routed through that tunnel? I've tried using nginx like so: upstream tunnel { server 0.0.0.0:7777; } server { listen 8888; server_name server.com; location / { access_log /var/log/nginx/tunnel-access.log; error_log /var/log/nginx/tunnel-error.log; proxy_pass http://tunnel; proxy_set_header Host $host; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_redirect off; } } From the nginx error log I see: [error] 11389#0: *1 connect() failed (111: Connection refused) I've been looking at trying to use iptables, but haven't made any progress. iptables seems like a more elegant solution than running nginx just for tunneling. • setting up synergy (multi-computer shared input devices) new to mac

  I've just gotten a mac and the first thing I'm trying to do in setting it up for dev is to set-up synergy. I've run into countless issues, and am making progress, but that 'mac's just work' theory is getting tired really fast. I'd prefer running the mac as the server, as it's a desktop. why use my pc(laptop) as the server. So i downloaded synergy, and tried to edit the 'synergy.conf' file. First with textmate, then with apple script. Neither of these applications will open the file. Even after changing textmate to use plain text format and switching off a few other things to make it into a plain text editor. No good. Uh, isn't that what these script/text editors are for? Then I found SyneryKM which is a package to run synergy on osx. Took LOTS of fiddling, but I think I finally kinda got it figured out. I've got my pc & mac both running synergy. However, my pc will only connect to synergy using the ip address. No problem, however, my mac won't connect to itself as a synergy server using the IP address. If I use the ip address as a screen in the 'server configuration file', i get a 'Error: unknown screen name mymac'. I know this shouldn't be super complicated, and possibly not the place to find answers about synergy, but I couldn't find a better place, and there has been some talk of synergy here. Any chance somebody can help with this?

• VMware Fusion configuration files missing

  I need to set up port forwarding to my VM in Fusion 5. Everywhere on the net, the solution is described as editing the file: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf However, on my install, that file doesn't exist. Neither does the vmnet8 directory. Here is the full content of VMware stuff I have in /Library/Application Support/: /Library/Application Support/ VMware/ VMware Fusion AdminWritable Shared vmInventory usbarb.rules VMware Fusion That's right: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/ exists but is empty. And there is no VMware folder in other Library directories on my system. I am running OS X 10.8.2. I just reinstalled Fusion 5.02, no change. Meanwhile, I have 3 VMs that work just fine. So how am I supposed to set up port forwarding with Fusion 5? Thanks, JD Edit: in a hunch, I tried ps ax | grep natd which returned: 9646 ?? S 0:00.01 /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmnet-natd -s 7 -m /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.mac -c /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf So it seems that the configurations files are now in the directory /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion. I'll work from here and edit this question as I make progress.

• RAID1 Broken Mirroring

  I'm having a little server with Windows Small Business Server 2003. I'm using RAID1, via a HighPoint Rocket RAID 1640 RAID-card, using two harddrives. This week the server alarmed, and durig reboot I got the error-message Broken Mirroring (User Manual page 30). I had a few alternatives (see the manual), first I tried Continue, but the server restarted during boot. Next time I took Power Off, and replaced the oldest harddrive with a new one, and when I booted, I selected Rebuild. Then I selected the new harddrive to be the new one. The rebuild-procedure started and a progress bar at 0% showed up, but after a few seconds I got the message Copy Failed!, then the server booted and Windows Server started. Now it works fine. But I guess that I'm just using one harddrive now, and it's not mirrored. I haven't touched the server since then (two days ago). What should I do now? I have no experience of this situation. Anyone that have some guidance?

• Ubuntu NBR karmic boot freezes at fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16

  Hi all, I have a netbook (emachine e250 - equivalent to an acer aspire one) and I have Ubunutu NBR 9.10 installed on it. Every other cold boot freezes at the following error message: "fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16" There is no disk activity, no activity what so ever. I have left the machine sit for over an hour and nothing. It takes a couple of hard resets to be able to boot properly. Once it boots everything works great (wireless, suspend/resume, etc.)! I have spent the last couple of weeks researching the problem and the only thing that seems to work is setting nolapic in the boot string in grub - it boots every time. Unfortunately, nolapic disables the second core and causes problems with suspend resume. At first I thought it was an fsck problem with the first partition on the hard disk as it is a hidden ntfs partition containing the windows xp recover information. So in /etc/fstab I set the partition so that it would be ignored by fsck. This didn't seem to do anything. I have these partitions: /dev/sda1 - an ntfs recovery partition /dev/sda2 - /boot /dev/sda3 - swap /dev/sda5 - / /dev/sda6 - /home I am running kernel version 2.6.31-19-generic and have all the patches (as indicated by update manager). I also have no splash screen so I can see the boot progress. I have only been using NBR since January, I have been using Ubuntu on my desktop since last June (2009-06). What logs should I be looking at? Is there a log for failed boots? Thanks, Troy

  Question: Executing remote (Sysinternals) command... pskill \\machine winlogon ...can budge a server that is stuck rebooting, but how/why does this work? How do you know which service to kill? To recreate (e.g.): You run Windows Update, allow a reboot, and ...NOTHING! RDP gets cut off but the server does not reboot. Just about every other service seems to stay up. Further Background: I've faced this problem on VMs hosted around the planet for some years, and used various sc.exe and shutdown commands to learn the state of and attempt remote reboot of servers in such a state, with limited success. Most datacentres don't offer any way to see the true console or power off/on such machines. They charge $$ for you to call them to do such simple things after hours, when you nearly always have to run your maint tasks. e.g. NET USE \\machine\IPC$ /USER:login password sc \\machine query RpcSs sc \\machine query TermService sc \\machine query wuauserv tasklist /s machine This occasionally works for me... shutdown /m \\machine /r /f /t: 0 ...but more often than not it fails with: A system shutdown is in progress (1115). I found this question, and the answer by @Tweek, and it worked really well, but was I just lucky? Can not RDP to Win 2003 box or initiate remote restart @Tweek said to run: pskill \\hostname winlogon ...and that got me past this situation in a new way (Server 2008 R2 in my most recent case) - really useful! I just need to understand if I got lucky or there is more science here. What I'd like to know is why the winlogon process? @Livne said to use "tasklist /s HostName" to see what is the culprit, but how do you tell from the listed output? It's just a list of running tasks etc. From that I would not know what to look for, nor could I see anything about the winlogon process that suggested to my eyes that was the one to kill.

• Properly force SSL with .htaccess, no double authentication

  I'm trying to force SSL with .htaccess on a shared host. This means there I only have access to .htaccess and not the vhosts config. I know you can put a rule in the VirtualHost config file to force SSL which will be picked up there (and acted upon first), preventing double authentication, but I can't get to that. Here's the progress I've made: Config 1 This works pretty well but it does force double authentication if you visit http://site.com - once for http and then once for https. Once you are logged in, it automatically redirects http://site.com/page1.html to the https coutnerpart just fine: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301] RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !(^www\.site\.com*)$ RewriteRule (.*) https://www.site.com$1 [R=301,L] AuthName "Locked" AuthUserFile "/home/.htpasswd" AuthType Basic require valid-user Config 2 If I add this to the top of the file, it works a lot better in that it will switch to SSL before prompting for the password: SSLOptions +StrictRequire SSLRequireSSL SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} eq "site.com" ErrorDocument 403 https://site.com It's clever how it will use the SSLRequireSSL option and the ErrorDocument403 to redirect to the secure version of the site. My only complaint is that if you try and access http://site.com/page1.html it will redirect to https://site.com/ So it is forcing SSL without a double-login, but it is not properly forwarding non-SSL resources to their SSL counterparts. Regarding the first config, Insyte mentioned "using mod_rewrite to perform a simple redirect is a bit of overkill. Use the Redirect directive instead. It's possible this may even fix your problem, as I believe mod_rewrite rules are some of the last directives to be processed, just before the file is actually grabbed from the filesystem" I have not had no such luck on finding a force-ssl config option with the redirect directive and so have been unable to test this theory.

  Ah, confusion. I'm trying to install a python library called lxml as needed by a python script. I've been through numerous SU quesitons and answers. I haven't been able to make much progress.   I needed some coordinates for a HTML MAP and tried to use inkskape by opening the image and just draw a path with my polygon coordinates. The original image The SVG file from inkscape Link to SVG Progress: I tried a tool called InkscapeMap which looks promising and simple, but unfortunately it looks like it didn't work with this particular svn file. Solved! Saving the file as a Plain SVG solved the problem and InkscapeMap worked perfectly. (Btw. saving as an optimized svg caused a parsing error) Update 13.11 Using inkscapeMap 0.6 and Inkscape 0.48 i needed to uncheck relative coordinates in SVG output preferences. Also if you get a C error message, hunt down the polygon with a C in it, and redraw the polygon using the XML editor in inkscape. • Solaris TCP stack tuning

  We have a large web project (about 2-3k requests per second), using haproxy (http://haproxy.1wt.eu/) as a frontend and load balancer between the java application servers. The frontend (haproxy) is running on Linux but we are going to migrate it to the Solaris 10 as all our other servers are running under Solaris. After switching a traffic I see the two things: a) the web site became loading slower (5-10 seconds with images in comparison to 2-3 seconds on Linux) b) sometimes haproxy fails to perform a "lifecheck" (get a special web page and analyze http response code) due to the socket timeout. After switching traffic back to Linux everything is okay. I've tried to tune all params I found in /dev/tcp but no progress. I believe the problem is in some open socket limitations. If someone can point me to the answer, I would be greatly appreciated. p.s. haproxy is running under Xen DomU on Linux (Kernel 2.6.18, Debian 5), under zone on Solaris (10 u8). the only thing we did on Linux is increasing of ip_conntrack_max (I believe Solaris option tcp_conn_req_max_q is the equivalent).

• Powershell: Execute exe on remote server and capture output

  I am trying to script the execution of an installer on remote web servers. The installer in question is also a Windows Service that hosts NServiceBus. If RDP'd into the server, the application is installed by the following command: &"$theInstaller" /install /serviceName:TheServiceName The installer prints output about its progress registering the service and connecting to the database to stdout, among other things. This works fine from an RDP session, but when I execute it remotely via PS, I get a you-can't-do-this-over-the-network message if I execute it directly or via Invoke-Command -computername $theRemoteServer: System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'file://\\theRemoteServer\c$ \thePath\AutoMapper.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515) --- System.NotSupportedException: An attempt was made to load an assembly from a network location which would have caused the assembly to be sandboxed in previous versions of the .NET Framework. • Intermittent unavailability of an instance in a failover cluster while a standby node is offline in

  Hi everyone. I've got a small failover cluster that I run for the websites my company has. During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem. • On a failing hard drive, I am able to view data but unable to copy it - why?

  I have a 2.5" external hard drive that is failing. It's not making the expected 'clicking' noise that most hard drives and I am able to view the data, but I am unable to actually retrieve the data. I attempted to use SpinRite in order to access the data on the drive, but it didn't like the external drive. When I view the drive's property page, the drive shows that it's used space is at 100% and that it has 0 bytes available; however, the progress indicator under the drive icon in Windows Explorer shows that it's roughly 50% full (which is correct). When I attempt to run Windows' "Error Checking" tool and attempt to "scan for an attempt recovery of bad sectors," the tool begins to run then immediately closes with no error message. I am able to browse the contents of the drive using Windows Explorer. When I begin to try copying any given single file, the copy process begins, an indicator starts, and then the copy fails with no real error message. The Disk Management page in Computer Management under Control Panel also shows this drive has being 'Healthy.' I dropped the drive off at a data recovery store and they said that "The data seems to be intact, but an internal failure is preventing any information from being retrieved." They offered to provide me references to a data recovery specialist. I've also attempted to run CHKDSK on the drive (with and without arguments) but it returns the following error: The type of the filesystem is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives. Before going the route of more expensive data recovery, I'm wondering if these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Other questions... I'm willing to continue trying tools such as TestDisk and/or PhotoRec (as the majority of the data that I'd like to salvage are photos) but how long I should expect either tool to run given approximately 400GB of data? I'm also comfortable using Linux so I welcome any suggestions for utilities or tools and strategies with which you've had success.

• Authenticating Active Directory Users to Mac OS X Mavericks Server L2TP VPN Service

  We have a Windows Server 2012 Active Directory Infrastructure that consists of two domain controllers. Bound to the Active Directory Domain is a Mac OS X Mavericks Server 10.9.3. The server runs Profile Manager and VPN Services. My Active Directory users are able to authenticate to the Profile Manager, but not the VPN. I have found several threads on other forums of other users reporting similar issues, here is just one of many references: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5174619 It appears as though the issue is related to a CHAP authentication failure. Can anyone suggest what next troubleshooting steps I might take? Is there a way to liberalize the authentication mechanism to include MSCHAP? Here is an excerpt of the transaction from the logs. • Paused BitLocker encryption because no longer want to encrypt the hard drive - how do I get out of encrypting?

  I'm hoping someone can help. I'm not a techy and can't seem to find the same question already answered. I went to encrypt (using BitLocker) a Buffalo hard drive but after it took about 1 min to reach 0.2% 'encrypted' I decided to pause and eject, thinking this would have ended the encryption process. However, I had already assigned a password to it on the instruction pre the encryption beginning. I've since connected my hard drive again and I'm asked to input the password. If I don't I cannot access the drive. However, if I do, I CAN access the files but straight away the little BitLocker Drive Encryption dialogue box comes up saying Encryption in progress.. which I have the option to Pause. So I hit Pause straight away as I do not want to go through with the encryption. Is there any way I can stop the process and decrypt before encryption is completed? Or am I forever going to need to Pause quickly and eject. I fear that will affect my hard drive longer term. Thanks.

• can't Remote desktop to windows XP, blaming the server side

  After rebooting my work PC (windows XP sp3) this Wednesday (thank to Microsoft Tuesday), I found that I can't remote desktop to my work PC from home (with VPN to company). I have been remote-desktop to work for years and I am really surprised since connectivity is not the problem, so I brought up wireshark to sniff the packets. I can see after TCP handshake, client sent X.224 Connection Request 03 00 00 13 0e e0 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 08 00 03 00 00 00 server sent X.224 Connection Confirm. 03 00 00 0b 06 d0 00 00 12 34 00 According to "MS-RDPBCGR", the official spec on RDP, the server should include Negotiation Response in the "Connection Confirm" message but it didn't. It's empty. I googled a lot but didn't find any clue on why server did that. By the way, I used the same remote desktop client and can connect to other windows XP PC. Here are a couple of pieces of information that may help to give a clue: Since TCP handshake (server port being 3389), I believe the svchost service is actually running. going to control panel -- system window, --- "Remote" tab, the remote desktop is indeeded checked and it states that my username is allowed. according to the packet capture, client didn't even get a chance to tell server what user was trying to logon. Yes, the progress bar showed up a few seconds and then it went back to the "Remote desktop Connection" window again. Searched "windowsupdate.log", didn't find any appearance of the word "remote".

• Upgrading memory on an IBM Power 710 Express (8231-E2B)

  We have a Power 710 Express server that was loaded with 4x4 GB memory on a single riser card. I have replaced the 4 chips with 4x8GB and put in another riser card and loaded it with 4x8GB more for a total of 64GB memory. The firmware is AL730_078. When i power it on, the service processor boots up and i can access the ASMi. From here I can look at "Memory Serial Presence Data" and see that the system in some way detects 8x8 GB. However when i look at Hardware Deconfiguration and specifically Memory Deconfiguration, it is still listed with old values, 16384MB, and claims there are 4x4 chips in the C17 riser. How do i proceed to make the server recognize properly the amount of memory installed? I get a FSPSP04 and B181B50F progress code on booting because (i think) it hasn't been told the memory has changed. It then does not proceed to booting the operating system (VIOS) when turned on. Are there any steps I have overlooked here? Can I do some commands, either on the service processor, or otherwise, to tell the system to configure with the proper amount of memory? PS: This is a stand alone server, not configured with HMC or SDMC.

• Windows 7 - How to access my documents from Windows 8 (dual boot)

  I am dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8 on two different partitions of the same drive: Win7: (C:) Win8: (D:) I am trying to get access to my Win7 user folder (C:\Users\Mason) in order to access my Win7 documents folder (C:\Users\Mason\Documents) from Windows 8. When I try to on Windows 8, I get an error message saying "You don't have permission to access this folder. Click here to permanently get access to this folder". When I click, the progress bar in Windows Explorer slowly moves to the maximum and disappears. When I try opening the folder, I get the same error message. When editing security permissions for the folder in Windows 8, Explorer freezes. I do not know how to remove the restrictions from Windows 7. I checked the Windows 8 user folder (D:\Users\Mason) and it had the group or user name: "S-1-5-21-936898901-3363470404-1273668825-1001". I tried copying and pasting it into the Win7 User Folder Permissions, but got the error "An object with the following name cannot be found". How would I access my folders?

• SQL Server 2005 SP3 on Windows 7 - No Management Studio

  I've been trying for a day and a half now to get SQL Server 2005, DEV edition, to work on Windows 7, 64 bit prof. I install from the disk, then run SP 3. I get a failure on the Client Components section of the Installation Progress along with this vague message - Product : Client Components Product Version (Previous): 1399 Product Version (Final) : Status : Failure Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_tools.msp.log Error Number : 1712 Error Description : MSP Error: 1712 One or more of the files required to restore your computer to its previous state could not be found. Restoration will not be possible. I've uninstalled all Visual Studio and tried to make this as clean as possible, and have read a lot of the blog posts, but am really at my wits end about this. I am not a DBA, but I use SQL Server all the time when coding and testing apps. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can get this sorted out? I've been ati this for a long time and have never encountered an installation as bad as this one. Thanks Mike Thomas

• Synchronization of volume snapshots when doing whole system backups

  Is there a way to guarantee consistency across volumes when doing backups from LVM snapshots? Consider this scenario: Some system upgrade is in progress. It will write some files to the /usr volume, and once completed, will record success in the /var volume. As the upgrade is just about complete, I run a backup script that creates snapshots of the /usr and /var volumes, along with the rest of the system's volumes, and proceeds to create backups from those snapshots. Just before the upgrade's last write/flush on the /usr volume completes, the backup script takes its snapshot of /usr. That write completes, and the upgrade operation's success is quickly recorded in the nebulous depths of /var. The backup script takes a snapshot of /var. The backup script creates backups from the snapshots it has, er, snapshotted. So the result of all of this tomfoolery is that the resulting /usr backup contains a file which is missing a few bits, and the /var backup contains metadata indicating that that file is complete and approved for use. Without delving into the details of which operating systems' system upgrade systems would be unfazed by such trifles, is there a way to avoid such problems? At the least this seems like it could cause some application to fail unexpectedly after restoration of such a backup.
