  • Can't transfer images from a camera connected to usb2 port on a pcmcia adapter

    I have an old laptop (HP OmniBook vt6200, WinXp pro, sp2) that only has usb1 ports. Transferring pictures from a digital camera is too slow, so I thought of trying one of those pccards carrying usb2 ports (D-Link Dub C2 in my case). Connecting the camera to one of the ports on the pccard, Picasa seems to freeze trying to read the camera contents, until I either disconnect the camera or the pccard. Any idea on what's wrong?

  • Restrict programs from accessing the Internet

    I have a 256 kbit/s Internet connection. Most often, I find that the browsing speed is too slow. I have to use TCPView (SysInternals) to find out which program is accessing the Internet without my knowledge and terminate it. Previously I was using ZoneAlarm to control Internet access by installed programs. But as it doesn't work for Windows 7, I'm left with no option. Is there any other tool which serves the purpose?

  • What can I do to speed up my HTC Hero?

    When I first got my HTC Hero phone it was very fast. But after a couple of weeks it's become slow. Typically (on any device), I've noticed that this is caused by having too much running at once... Is there a way I can limit the number of applications that are open? I think there's a task manager application in the market, so I'll try this. Does anyone have any further suggestions?

    I was wondering whether it is better to put a laptop into sleep or hibernation in Windows 7, and suspend or hibernate in Ubuntu: when carrying the laptop in a backpack and walking or slow-running to another place in around 15 minutes, Or just when the lid is closed. My concerns are if the heat generated and accumulated and bumping from transmit will do harm to the laptop, and I can miss other important factors. Is sleep in Windows 7 same as suspend in Ubuntu? This is a relatively slow connection and while it is suitable for those VPN necessities; much of my other internet usage can be done without the VPN at a much higher speed. Is there a way to tell Safari and my FTP software to use the VPN and for all other connections to go directly to the internet. I am currently using OSX's Network Prefs for running my VPN connection.   • can router configuration cause decreasing of download rate?

    My download speed got crazy since I changed the router's IP. But nothing got fixed after doing a factory reset. The speed was 1024 kb/s (128 kB/s) but it is 200kb/s (max) right now. I mean it works good if a request is small (i.e. a HTTP request) but it gets slow if a request has a big response. Help me please. (It is three days I'm downloading VS2010.)

  • Determining timeout reason

    What is the best way to determine what causes a server timeout on a Plesk passworded directory in IIS6? Even if the default page is static text I can get a timeout. This has worked fine for two years and has only seemed to change after adding a new permitted user. Occasionally there is success but usually loading is very slow. Where would I look for a problem, as it doesn't seem to be page content causing the issue?

I was hoping I would be able to do it with ApacheTop but I have to list our each log file separately as Plesk splits domains apache logs into individual files.     I'm an analyst and intermediate programmer working for a consulting company. Sometimes we are doing some intensive computing in Excel which can be frustrating because we have slow computers. My company does not have enough money to buy everyone new computers right now. Is there a cloud computing service that allows me to login to a high performance virtual computer from remote desktop?     I currently have a D-Link DIR-628 router in my home network that I use for wifi and local networking. However, I am looking to upgrade to a gigabit network as the data transfer speed between my network devices is too slow since the router only supports 10/100. Can I simply add a small gigabit switch (like the Netgear GS105) to the router and connect all local network devices to the gigabit switch ports instead of the router's ports or do I need to replace the entire router to a gigabit router?

  • Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

    I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

  • Web-based disk space visualizer

    I have a number of Linux webservers for which I'd like to track where disk space is going and keep disk space to a minimum. Typically I login on SSH and use du to find out where disk space is wasted but this is cumbersome and slow. A visualisation tool like KDirStat would be ideal, but it requires installing an X server at the very least, which kind of defeats the purpose. Is there any web-based disk space visualizer? I'm open to alternative solutions.

  • VPN: Does all traffic get routed through the VPN when I am logged in?

    If I log into a slow VPN with only a 15k/s connection, when I try to go to kernel.org or some other site to download something, is everything getting routed through that other network? (so my max speed for all downloads is 15k/s?) Or are only the DNS requests getting routed and I can still get my normal download speeds I would have been able to before logging into the router?
