• Sending information between JavaScript and Web Services using AJAX

  Alright so I'm using Microsoft's Web Services and AJAX to get information from a SQL database for use with java script on the client side. And I'm wondering what the best method is. Before I started working on the project, the web services were setup to return a C# List filled with some objects. Those objects variables (ints, strings, etc.) contain the data I want to use. Of course, java script can't do much with this, to the best of my knowledge. I then modified the web service to return a 2D Array, but java script got confused, and to the best of my knowledge can't handle 2D array's returned from C#. I then tried to use a regular array, but then a found the length property of an array in JS doesn't carry over, so I couldn't preform a for loop through all the items, because there wasn't anyway of knowing how many elements there were. The only other thing I can thing of is returning a string with special char's to separate the data, but this seems way too convoluted. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  I understand the 32 bit Vista limit in addressing only 4Gb of memory space but I have a very specific question: I have 3Gb installed on a Vista 32 bit system with a 512Mb video card, MSI X-58 board, Intel i7, 920 CPU. System Information currently shows: Installed Memory: 3.00Gb Available Physical Memory: 1.73 Gb My understanding is that the 512Mb video card occupies memory addresses between 4.0Gb and 3.5Gb and so does not subtract from the 3.0Gb of physical memory (correct my understanding if wrong) My Question: If I install another 1Gb of RAM, will my Available Memory increase to 2.73Gb? • How can I copy files in the middle of a build in Team System?

  I have two solutions that I want to include in a build. Solution two requires the dll's from solution one to successfully build. Solution two has a Binaries folder where the dll's from solution one need to be copied before building Solution two. I've been trying an AfterBuild Target, hoping that it would copy the items after the first SolutionToBuild, but it doesn't fire then. • Why does Visual Studio's "Unused References..." button not flag System.Xml and System.Xml.Linq?

  I was trying to finish up a VB.NET class library project when I tried to remove all unused references. I know for a fact that I'm not explicitly using any thing from the System.Xml and System.Xml.Linq assemblies yet the "Unused References..." button never flags them for removal. In fact I even tried "Unused References..." on a blank project and it still never flagged them. The only reason I could think of is that either mscorlib.dll or System.dll is using System.Xml.dll or System.Xml.Linq.dll. Are they safe to remove?

• How do you plan for starting a new web system?

  I've been creating more and more systems recently and I find more and more planning and preparation I do before starting the project. I determine what libraries or frameworks I will be using, what languages, the basic architecture of how the site will flow, etc. I've also heard of other design processes such as hanging styrofoam balls to show where classes are and how they relate, which is a process I've never heard of nor do I know how it works. Is there any software that helps with this process? Are there any guidelines or steps or do you have a recommended set of steps or guidelines that you follow when designing a new project?

• Sharing information between applications

  My question is very simple to expose: I have a few aplications that share data between then. I need a way to support that data sharing (cross several computers) and when one aplication changes data, others should be notified about that. My question is about what tecnologies could be usefull to me. The solution i realise at this moment is to have a database to share data and an external publish-subscribe system (like http://pubsub.codeplex.com/) to notify all applications when the data is changed. But i belive that could exist some helpfull solutions. Do you know any of then? Thanks.

What I struggling to get my head around is how I would set-up this hard coded page to work with my variables. If anyone can help, much appreciated. Homer.

  So, I have a couple of batch files that install some executables and they work, but when the executables setup shortcuts on the desktop only SYSTEM has access to them. Is there a way I can prevent that or make it so it adds Domain Users access or something like that. I realize that the batch files are ran under the SYSTEM context, but I'd like to find a way to clean up after them. Thanks in advance!

• Database tables with dynamic information

  I've googled this and found that it's almost impossible to create a database with dynamic collumns. I'll explain my problem first. I am making a webshop for a customer. It has multiple computer products for sale. CPU's HDD's RAM ect. All these products have different properties, a CPU has an FSB, RAM has a CAS latency. But this is very inconvenient because my orders table needs foreign keys to different tables which is impossible. An other option is to store all the product specific information in a varchar or blob field and let PHP figure it out. The problem with this solution is that the website needs a PC builder. A step-by-step guide to building your PC. So for instance if a customer decides he wants a new "i7 920" or whatever i want to be able to sellect all motherboards for socket 1366, which is impossible because all the data is stored in one field. I know it's possible to select all motherboards form the DB and let PHP figure out which ones are for socket 1366 but i was wondering, is there a better solution?

• Duplicate information from sql result

  I looked in about 18 other posts on here an most people are asking how to delete the records not just hide them. So my problem: I have a database with staff members who are associated with locations. Many of the staff members are associated with more than one location. What I want to do is to only display the first location listed in the mysql result and skip over the others. • Fix Windows Computer Problems with Microsoft Fix it Center

  Fixing computer problems can often be difficult, but Microsoft is aiming to make it as simple as a couple clicks with.  Here’s how you can easily fix computer problems with Microsoft’s new Fix it Center Beta. Last year Microsoft began offering small Fix it scripts that you could download and run to help solve common computer problems automatically.  These were added to some of the most visited Windows help pages, and helped fix problems with things such as printing errors and Aero glass support.  Now, the Fix it scripts have been bundled together with the Fix it Center, making fixing your computer even easier.  This free tool works great on all editions of Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Note: The Fix it Center is currently in beta, so only run if you are comfortable running beta software. Getting Started Download the Fix it Center installer (link below), and install as normal. The installer will download the remaining components, and then finish the installation. In Windows XP, if you have not yet installed .NET 2.0, you may see the following prompt.  Click Yes to go to the download site, and once you’ve installed .NET 2.0, run the Fix it Center setup again. Also, the Fix it Center uses PowerShell to automate its fixes, but if it is not installed yet the installer will automatically download and install it. Find Fixes for Your PC Once Fix it Center is installed, you can personalize it for your computer.  Select Now, and the click Next. It will scan your computer for problems with known solutions, and will offer to go ahead and install these troubleshooters.  If you choose to not install them, you can always download them from within the Fix it Center at a later time. While those troubleshooters are downloading, you can create a Fix it account.  This will give you additional help and support, and let you review Fix it solutions for all your computers from an online dashboard.  You need a Windows Live ID to create an account. Also, choose whether or not to send information to Microsoft about your hardware and software problems. Get Problems Fixed Now that the Fix it Center is installed and has identified issues on your computer, it’s time to get the problems fixed.  Here’s the default front screen in Windows 7, showing all of the available fixes. And here’s the Fix it Center running in Windows XP. Select one of the Troubleshooters to see more information about it, and click Run to start it. You can choose to either detect problems and have them fixed automatically, or you can choose for the Fix it Center to show you the solutions and let you choose whether to apply them or not.  The defaults usually work good, and only take a couple minutes to apply the fixes, but you can select your own fixes if you’d rather be in control. It will scan your computer for known problems in this area, and then will show you the results.  Here, Fix it determined that startup programs may be causing performance issues.  Select Start System Configuration, and uncheck any of the programs you do not usually use. Once you’ve run a troubleshooter, you can see the issues it checked for and any problems it discovered. If you created the online account, you can also choose to view the details online.  This will show all of your computers with Fix it Center and the fixes you’ve run on them.   Conclusion Whether you’re a power user or new to computers, sometimes it’s best to just get your problems fixed and go on with life instead of digging through the registry, forums, and hacking your way to a solution.  Remember the service is still in beta and may not work perfectly or solve your issues every time. But it’s something cool and worth a look. • Is osTicket secure/private enough

  I was going to use osTicket as my 'help desk' for my website, however I just got a little bit concerned when I realised that the clients' login details to see their support tickets are only their email address and a ticket ID. I am probably going over the top with security though, which is why I wanted to get some second opinions on how secure osTicket actually is and whether I should use it with my website. I run a software company, so chances are licence keys may be included in support tickets which are obviously sensitive information and valuable - so I want to ensure that the likelihood of a support ticket being hacked is very low. If there is any plugins/additions to make osTicket more 'secure', I would appreciate it if you could point me to them. Otherwise if there are any more free, more suited, help desk softwares out there please let me know. Thanks in advance

• Cannot see user desktop when I log in

  I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available... Thank You! Jesi

• Ubuntu won't stay installed

  I recently experienced OS problems with Windows 8 so I decided to wipe my hard drive and install Ubuntu using a usb boot. I am able to "Try Ubuntu" or choose to install instantly, however, after installation it asks me to restart my computer but when I do this I receive the same installation options I originally had, "Try Ubuntu", "Install", "OEM Install", "Repair Disk". I initially thought this was the result of leaving the boot usb in, so I tried reinstalling, but now I just receive a message saying "No boot disc or boot disc failed". This happens with any type of install I do, I've tried clearing the hard drive multiple times, making a new boot usb, but nothing seems to help. I've tried reinstalling windows, but I encounter the same problem, without the usb I get an error. I have an Acer Aspire M3470, I cleared my hard drive and attempting to install via usb boot. I have a weird BIOS menu probably because of AMD but it's been hard to find information regarding my particular BIOS menu. HERE is an image of my BIOS menu

  I'm having a really big problem with installing Ubuntu on my computer. It seems that when I try to install from BIOS from the CD, nothing happens, and when I say nothing happens it boots up my computer like usual. When I try to install from the CD from My Computer directly from the wubi.exe file, nothing happens. THEN when I try to install from the boot helper, it gives me this error: An error occurred: Could not retrieve the required installation files For more information please see the log file: c:\users\Meghan\appdata\local\temp\wubi-14.04-rev286.log Will it help if I say I have a pirated version of Windows? Maybe that's why? I'm frustrated, and I'm not sure what to do. Please help me

• Run Logstalgia on Remote Global Apache Log On a WHM System

  I work for a small web development shop. We have a dedicated Linux server running WHM. For fun we want to run Logstalgia on a machine in our office. We'd really like it to display information about all the traffic on our server. Logstalgia use Apache's access logs to generate its visuals, the problem I have is that by default WHM does not have an access log for all sites combined. How can I safely configure our server to output a combined/global Apache access log in a place accessible by a non-root SSH user? I am also concerned that this file could get quite large so I think I'd also need to know how to have it automatically shed old information. To make things more interesting I'm a programmer not a sys admin so not everything is immediately obvious to me.

• Cheapest Embedded System with Wireless Connectivity?

  Problem: I'm trying to capture some information coming from keyboard, mouse and barcode reader connected to some PC via PS/2, USB and/or RS-232, before information get to PC and send it over the Internet to some central server. I'm thinking to do so by using some kind of hardware interface (middleware, if you like) between PC and input devices. I thought this interface can be embedded PC, PDA or simply some mobile phone with wireless connectivity. PS/2 and RS-232 could be converted to USB using some USB convector/hub that connects to one of these interface systems. Then some special API programming take place to communicate between PC, input devices and wireless server, in the form of application running on the interface system. What's the cheapest solution that can achieve this? Or possibly any other solution?
