  • How do I stop VMware player from resizing?

    Hi! I just downloaded VMware player (I used to use Virtual Box, but I needed Windows Aero, and vbox doesn't support that yet) But it will automatically resize the guest when I resize the window, and I do not want that. I did not see an option to turn it off. Does anyone know? Thank you.

  • Need for page file with 12 GB RAM

    Hi, I recently got my new PC with 12 GB RAM (running Windows 7 64bit). The default installation suggests a 12 GB page file on the system drive (which I think is both inefficient and expensive on a SSD drive...) I'm wondering if I need any virtual memory at all, 12 GB being more than I had on my previous machine including the page file (I had 3GB RAM + 3GB pagefile).     I did a great deal of reading here before posting this because I didn't want to post a duplicate - but I'm on a bit of a deadline and getting frustrated, so here goes... I very, very, very sincerely apologize if this is long winded or hard to read. Please - please just ask for any information or clarification and I will give it as quickly as I possibly can. This has become very frustrating to me and this is the last place I know to turn. I have no experience with setting up DNS, no experience with nameservers, and no peers to go to for help. So this is kind of my last ditch effort. The task of setting up a private server has, through circumstances beyond my control, fallen into my lap. I own a domain (hereafter referred to as yyy.com) and have always used shared hosting - I buy a package and just point it to the domain nameservers they give me. It's always been simple. yyy.com is registered with network solutions Now I have purchased a Virtual Private Hosting package from GoDaddy.com - and it comes with Plesk 11. I have no earthly idea how to begin to get the right nameserver for yyy.com. I have gone through the instructions and have wound up exceedingly frustrated. I have 2 IP addresses from GoDaddy for the server. This is what I have so far, and I cannot tell if it is working (Since propogation takes so long, it is extremely hard to test for me) IP 1 : XX.XX.XX.XX IP 2 : YY.YY.YY.YY (obviously hidden for privacy) Now after going through the documentation setup and waiting a few days, this is the setup I have - and so far it does not appear to be working.     I've remotely installed VirtualBox OSE on my Gentoo box at home. I have everything set up and ready for the OS. However all the documentation I've read seems to say that you can only use the PUEL version in order to get remote access during installs - does anyone know if it's possible to do similar with the OSE but using VNC? Links to documentation or tutorials would be welcome, apparently my Google-Fu is failing me, if it's out there. Thanks.

    I wonder what main purposes and benefits can one get after he sets up a webserver running on Linux installed on a VM which is hosted by Windows and that this webserver can be used as a local host for windows ? That is, I have java application that is a webserver made on Linux, I set up the virtual machine for the windows client apps to listen to its (Linux)'s local IP address and port e.g 192.168.50.50:11111 When my webserver runs, I can use http://192.168.50.50/ as the windows's localhost address (instead of 127.0.0.1 as I usually do).     I am in the process of adding a new slave to a replicated mysql setup. All of the slave nodes are virtual machines. If I clone one of the nodes to a new VM, then start it with no networking, stop mysql, change the server-id in my.cnf to a new id and then restart mysql and networking, will it all work correctly, or will mysql get confused because it used to be a different server id?     Specifically, I have an Ubuntu 10.04 system with a headless Ubuntu 12.04 virtual machine, and I'm looking for a way to have it set up so pressing ctrl+alt+F8 will take me into another X client which is connected to an X server on the vm (with gdm appropriately displayed at startup, etc.). As in, my startup script should spin up the headless machine and then immediately perform a "startx" pointed at the vm.

  • Which hardware to VM ratio for Build-Server virtualization?

    Let's start with saying that I'm a total noob wrt. to server virtualization. That is, I use VMs often during development, but they're simple desktop machine things for me. Now to my problem: We have two (physical) build servers, one master, one slave running Jenkins to do daily tasks and build (Visual C++ Builds) our release packages for our software. As such these machines are critical to our company, because we do lot's releases and without a controlled environment to create them, we can't ship fixes. (And currently there's no proper backup of these machines in place, because they do not hold any data as such - it just would be a major pain to setup them again should they go bust. (But setting up backup that I'd know would work in case of HW failure would even be more pain, so we have skipped that until now.)) Therefore (and for scaling purposes) we would like to go virtual with these machines. Outsourcing to the cloud is not an option, not at all, so we'll have to use on-premises hardware and VM hosts. Each Build-Server (master or slave) is a fully configured (installs, licenses, shares in case of the master, ...) Windows Server box. I would now ideally like to just convert the (two) existing physical nodes to VM images and run them. Later add more VM slave instances as clones of the existing ones. And here begin my questions: Should I go for one VM per one hardware-box or should I go for something where a single hardware runs multiple VMs? That would mean a single point of failure hardware wise and doesn't seem like a good idea ... or?? Since we're doing C++ compilation with Visual Studio, I assume that during a build the hardware (processor cores + disk) will be fully utilized, so going with more than one build-node per hardware doesn't seem to make much sense?? Wrt. to hardware options, does it make any difference which VM software we use (VMWare, MS, Virtualbox, ... ?) (We're using Windows exclusively for our builds.) Regarding budget: We have a normal small company (20 developers) budget for this. ;-) That is, if it's going to cost a few k$ it's going to cost. If it's free - the better. I strongly prefer solutions where there's no multi-k$ maintenance costs per year.

    So guys, sometime when i am browsing or doing other stuff it's like windows unplugs my usb-logitech-mouse. it than get riconnected again in few seconds. I tihnk this is happening after I had to install virtual machines (like: virtualbox and vmware) I already disinstalled them but this issue is still here. When this happens even the lights on my mouse are off same behaviour as like somone unplagged it. What could i do?

I'd like to hold on to the licensed copy in case I need to run a Windows app at some time in the future but want to wipe the machine completely, installing Ubuntu with no dual-boot. Is it possible to save an image of Windows 8 which can then be run (on the same laptop) from Linux as a virtual machine? If so, what applications (ideally free) should I use to make the image and then run it from Ubuntu?

  • Trouble with Ubuntu on Oracle VM

    I'm running Ubuntu on an Oracle VirtualBox virtual machine. I clicked the "install Ubuntu" button, and it took me through a wizard. I am currently on the following step: Unfortunately, the "forward" button is disabled. What's up with this? I tried entering different data for the form on this step, going back and redoing part of the wizard, and rebooting the machine. Nothing worked. My host OS is Windows 7.

  • Possible reasons for high CPU load of taskmgr.exe process on VM?

    On a VMware virtual machine which has severe performance problems I can see a constant average of 20+ percent CPU load for the TASKMGR.EXE (task manager) process. The apps running on this server have lower load, around 4 to 10 percent average. The VM is running Windows 2003 Server Standard with 3.75 GB assigned RAM. I suspect that the task manager CPU load has something to do with other VM instances on the VMWare server but could not see a similar value on internal ESXi systems (the problematic VM runs in the customers IT).

  • What's the standard location of a 3D clipping box?

    The way I understand 3D rendering, polygons are transformed using several matrices, and they are then clipped if they are not inside a certain box, before projecting the box onto the screen. Before transformation, the visible area is typically a frustum, and after transformation, I am guessing it's a cube. This cube makes the clipping math easier than a frustum would. My question is, what's the 'standard' location/size for this clipping box? I can think of 3 possibilities: (0,0,0)-(1,1,1), (-0.5,-0.5,-0.5)-(0.5,0.5,0.5), (-1,-1,-1)-(1,1,1) Or is there no standard?

    I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?
