• After installing Apache, PHP and MySQL I can't add extension to php.ini without Apache error

  Hello! I have Windows XP OS. Installed Apache 2.2.14, then PHP 5.2.12 (tested with phpinfo.php - IT'S WORKS!) Then I installed MySQL 5.1. And now, when I add extension = php_mysql.dll to php.ini and restart server, Apache tells me that he can't start (small window with "The requested operation has failed"). Even if I add only extension = *smth*.dll --- the same thing. Apache just don't love my extensions. How to prove him, that they are cool and stuff? Thanks.

• Windows performance monitor new instances

  Hi all, I am trying to configure performance monitor on 2003/2008R1&R2 to capture new instances of the counters without any luck. For example if I select counter Process\%Processor time (to monitor processor time per any instances of the process) everything works fine until I open or close any application. If in the meanwhile new application is open it will not be included in the monitoring processor, and old application instance will display zero for % processor time. The problem is performance monitor is not refreshing instances of the new applications/users/new terminal session/ or any other metrics that changes instances in the meanwhile. The solution is to stop/start log file, but I don't want to do that every sec and the logging will be split into two files. Anybody knows how do I accomplish to add all new instances? Any help greatly appreciated

• Searching for a specific option in a man page

  I often find myself man'ing a command just to learn about one specific option. Most of the time I can search to the option just fine, unless it's something like ffmpeg or gcc where I have to step through about 40 matches until I get to the actual description of the option... Sometimes I can get lucky and search for the word "options" to get close and then refine it from there, but it would be nice if I could reliably jump straight to the option in question. It would be cool if there was a tool that could parse out the options and build a database on which you could do searches, but after looking at the groff markup for a few pages I've determined it would only be a best-guess effort due to the lack of meta-information in groff markup... In my ideal world woman mode in emacs would support searching for specific options... :) Any tips for jumping straight to a specific option in a man page?

• NetApp and SQL Server?

  Do you have any good or bad experiences to share running SQL Server OLTP Systems on NetApp appliances? I have been working with a small, relatively low-volume cluster with a lower-end NetApp device, and I have found the environment to be generally unstable, at least compared to my experiences with other SANs, iSCSI arrays, and DAS setups. I struggle to believe that RAID DP and WAFL are more than fairy-dust technologies. A solution has been proposed to me that I just need a bigger, better NetApp, with PAM cards and other cool technology I've not heard of, and I feel like I would be better off spending a quarter of that on good direct-attached drives and a beefy server. At the same time, I feel that an Enterprise-class SAN should be something I can count on to be consistently a more stable, better performer than the less expensive solution I might propose. Are you a SQL Server DBA in an OLTP environment and love your NetApp? If you don't like them, why not?

• Encode real-time dvb-s stream using mencoder

  My satellite receiver can stream the mpeg-2 video/audio output through lan. Using mencoder, I'm trying to build a script to encode and save the stream in real time with my Core2Duo 1.8 Ghz. Right now, I'm using a single pass, it produces good quality for a video rate of 800Kb/s, but takes more then 95% of CPU power, thus making a lot of frameskips is the computer is used while encoding. mencoder -o -vf lavcdeint -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:q=2:aq=2 -ovc x264 -ffourcc avc1 -x264encopts crf=25:me=hex:subq=9:frameref=2:nocabac:threads=auto -mc 3 So, I'm considering using a 2-pass encoding to alleviate the processor and record 100% of the stream. But I have no idea how to start. For the info: Standard Stream: mpeg-2 720*576 25fps HD Stream: 1920*1080 50fps (this is not my goal to record it, but it will be super cool if I could)

• HP Pavilion dv6000 graphics issue

  A few days ago my laptop seized up on me while I was playing a game. When I restarted the computer, it sent me back to 640x480 resolution with 16 colors (clearly a graphical issue). In device manager, it shows an error, stating "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" regarding the video card. Upon removing and re-installing the drivers using both Windows Update and my own searching through nvidia's site, it's given me zero results. For kicks, I ran my antivirus (you never know!) and registry cleaner to see if anything would turn up. The antivirus found nothing, but CCleaner found 27 registry errors all dealing with my video card. What could be the cause of this, and what course of action would you recommend in this situation? • Disable Java Plugin in Google Chrome?

  This is the second time I've had a drive-by executable installed on my machine using the following: Google Chrome 6 (latest) Windows 7, UAC on This happened while I was browsing for images to add to a gaming.se post; one of the sites I visited (to get an image of a transfer cable) must have had drive-by browser exploit code running. UAC alerted me that a weird temporary executable wanted to run, and I declined, but I still got the fake antivirus executable running on my machine. Sigh.. I do have Java installed because I upload stuff monthly to clearbits.net and their uploader is a Java plugin. So my best guess is, websites are doing drive-by installs using the massive numbers of zero-day vulnerabilities in the Java browser plugins. For now, I have uninstalled Java, which works. But I wondered if I could disable the Java plugin in Google Chrome instead. So, how do you disable these vulnerable plugins in Google Chrome? I can't find the UI.

Do I need to be an AS (Autonomous System)? If I want to use an Anycast IP on my internal network, is it possible? Do I need anything special with a registrar/operator(s) to use it?   I’m using nginx with PHP-FPM (APC is installed). I need PHP’s flush() to work. Is this possible? Things I’ve tried so far: Disabling all output buffering in php.ini, as well as output compression. Disabling gzip in nginx’s configuration. Setting nginx’s fastcgi_* buffering settings and fastcgi_max_temp_file_size to zero. I’m sure I must be missing something, since I’ve run across many posts here and elsewhere where people claimed they’ve got it working, but I’m having no luck, it would seem.

• Windows XP: GNU find.exe moved my files and now they're lost

  I used a series of GNU find.exe commands to move media files to the current folder. Explorer show that the folders and files still exist in their original location but properties show zero size and files. I performed a chkdisk and that didnt help. Any ideas how to recover these files? • Slow NFS transfer performance of small files

  I'm using Openfiler 2.3 on an HP ML370 G5, Smart Array P400, SAS disks combined using RAID 1+0. I set up an NFS share from ext3 partition using Openfiler's web based configuration, and I succeeded to mount the share from another host. Both host are connected using dedicated gigabit link. Simple benchmark using dd: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=outfile bs=1000 count=2000000 2000000+0 records in 2000000+0 records out 2000000000 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 34.4737 s, 58.0 MB/s I see it can achieve moderate transfer speed (58.0 MB/s). But if I copy a directory containing many small files (.php and .jpg, around 1-4 kB per file) of total size ~300 MB, the cp process ends in about 10 minutes. Is NFS not suitable for small file transfer like above case? Or is there some parameters that must be adjusted?

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Load balancing Apache on a budget?

  Hi everyone, I am trying to get my head around the concept of load balancing to ensure availability and redundancy to keep users happy when things go wrong, rather than load balancing for the sake of offering blistering speed to millions of users. We're on a budget and trying to stick to the stuff where there's plenty of knowledge available, so running Apache on Ubuntu VPS's seems like the strategy until some famous search engine acquire us (Saturday irony included, please note). At least to me, it's a complete jungle of different solutions available. Apaches own mod_proxy & HAproxy are two that we found by a quick google search, but having zero experience of load balancing, I have no idea of what would be appropriate for our situation, or what we would look after while choosing a solution to solve our availability concerns. What is the best option for us? What should we do to get availability high whilst staying inside our budgets?

• How can I style the command being entered in a bash prompt?

  While watching this intro video to Brunch, at about t=1:30 the command prompt being used has some very cool styles. The part I'm interested in is how the presenter managed to colour the text being entered on the prompt, while it's being entered. It looks like the first argument is coloured green when it becomes a valid executable command & purple when it's invalid. Successive arguments appear white, though it looks like a valid file path gets an underline (see ~ t=2:01). What's the trick here? Is this a custom terminal emulator? Is it some kind of magic $PS1?

• Windows Server 2003 seems to pick the 'outgoing' IP address at random from all the ones configured in IIS, how can I make it just use one?

  We have multiple sites in IIS with different IP addresses. This is cool, want different IPs to all go to this server and use the proper site. However I discovered an issue that when the server makes an outgoing connection, I cannot predict which IP it will use. I had to have one client add ALL the IPs to their firewall so that a certain service could communicate with their server. Well now the time has come to add another IP/site to IIS but I had told them they would not need to add any more IPs. So the question is, how can I make Windows Server 2003 use only ONE specific IP for outgoing calls instead of it being unpredictable? If this is not a good enough description, when I was RDPed into the server and I opened IE and went to 'what is my IP' it was sometimes different which is how I discovered why the one client's firewall was suddenly refusing the connections. How can I just make outgoing calls originate from a static IP yet still allow multiple IPs pointing to different sites in IIS?

  Let's assume some things: Back-ups do run every X minutes, yet the things I save should be permanent. There's a firewall and virus scanner in place, yet there happens to be a zero day attack on me. I am using Windows. (Although feel free to append Linux / OS X parts to your answer) Here is the problem Any software can change anything inside my user folder. Tampering with the files could cost me my life, whether it's accessing / modifying or wiping them. So, what I want to ask is: Is there a permission-based way to disallow programs from accessing my files in any way by default? Extending on the previous question, can I ensure certain programs can only access certain folders? Are there other less obtrusive ways than using Comodo? Or can I make Comodo less obtrusive? • How to prevent Outlook from receiving multiple copies of the same email

  This question might be asked already, but it's different from this one. My boss has Outlook 2003, when he synchronize his emails while connecting through the local server (using Exchange I guess) he gets his emails normally. Once he is outside (not connection to our LAN) he gets each email duplicated 3 or 4 times. Does anyone experienced this before? and how can we fix this? Please no links to FAQ pages. For info, we are using Kaspersky anti virus and Windows 2003 server, with windows XP clients. [Update] Actually we have a bunch of 5 or 6 email accounts on Outlook, and only one of them recieve duplicated copies of the same email, all the others are cool. Further more all these email are using the sae service, Gmail for example. [Update 2] I just found out that Outlook is configured to remove emails from the server already, also, some emails exceeds 5 copies! Thank you

• MS Word 2007 Mail Merge fails on ZIP codes with leading Zeros (eg. 01234)

  I have an Excel Spreadsheet with a ZIP code column. For some dumb reason the original spreadsheet I got had all the zip codes stored as numbers, so a ZIP code like 01234 was stored as 1234. Easy to fix with "Format Column" as "Special = ZIP Code". All values like 1234, show up as 01234. Great! When I import it into Word via Mail Merge (to print address labels), the ZIP codes on all the addresses starting with a leading zero (like 01234) revert to their old form (1234). How do I fix this?

There are a lot of things in it I don't know how to do, such as: Having header rows that "stick" to the top even when you scroll down Slider on the first page changes where the chart pulls its data from Functions seem to be referring to named ranges in tables, like =SUM([nov]). Where do those names come from? Clicking "back to overview" on the "Budget" page returns you to the "Dashboard" page The number under "starting balance" of the top right corner of "Budget" changes when you change cell C5 On "Budget", each cell in the first column of each table has a drop-down menu for text, which seems to come from the "Setup" page The background isn't just plain white, but when I try to format paint it onto a new sheet, nothing happens If you know how any of these effects are achieved, I'm definitely curious. • Open Source webapp that shows PC / Projector status in 30+ Lecture rooms

  I am looking for a simple web application that only has a simple graphical representation of the current status of 30+ lecture rooms. I.e. Green = good, Red=bad i.e. PC or Projector not working. With a little message and a ETA as well. I am not looking for monitoring software, merely a way for a tech to flag a room as "technically challenged" until 1PM or until "Friday 10AM". With a message for those lecturers who are interested: "Waiting on replacement bulb" or "Power supply gone" I know this is a simple thing to code up yourself, but I am looking for something that has been around for a few years that has some cool extra little functionality that you wouldn't think of yourself. I just can't find anything like that out there. And just to be clear: not monitoring software, more like lecturer feedback web app.

  Hi, after a other mac or macbook is connected with a mini display port to a new generation imac you can switch between the imac and the other connected mac pressing cmd+F2(brightness up) using the keyboard of the imac. i connect my macbook to my imac, switch to the macbook and connect the bluetooth keyboard and mouse of my imac to my macbook. after that i'm not able to switch back to my imac, because the keyboard is used on my macbook. i have a second mouse connected to my imac, so i'd would be cool to switch views and control my imac with my second mouse. is it possible to send the shortcut cmd+F2 to my imac from my macbook? via command line or something? using apple script? all ideas are welcome, thanks!

My specific problem is that I want to install redhat into a tmpfs by telling kickstart: part / --fstype ext3 --size 1000 --maxsize 4000 --ondisk loop1 I've tried doing: %pre #!/bin/sh mkdir /tmp-root mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /tmp-root dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp-root/tmp-root.img bs=4096 count=1000000 losetup /dev/loop1 /tmp-root/tmp-root.img but that is not done early enough. Ugh! Update: I'm beginning to think it has nothing to do with being done early enough. I believe it has to do with anaconda and kudzu not thinking that a loopback device is a valid device. I'm not a python guy, so the idea of hacking up the kickstart code sucks! -Vinnie

• Making TMUX use Alt+Num to select window

  I have been messing with TMUX, and I am liking the configuration abilities. The window list at the bottom makes me think that the same shortcut for changing windows in Irssi, should work in TMUX, but it doesn't. So at the moment, I have to press C-b then a number to get that window open. I am happy having C-b for my normal prefix, (eg for C-b ? for help, C-b : command entry) But it would be cool if I could use both C-b+Numkey and Alt+NumKey for changing tabs. It would be even cooler if it could detect if a window is showing Irssi, and then ignore the Alt+NumKey, so that I can still change between Irssi windows.

  The Windows (Vista) documentation and available online info is comprehensively vague. If I have a moderately brain dead system and want to restore it, and I have a "Backup and Restore Center" backup whose "delta" is not quite a week old (but with a "full backup" behind it), what steps do I go through to recover my box back to that backup point? It's totally unclear whether simply doing "restore all" from the (advanced) "Center" is sufficient, or do I need to first take the box back to day zero with the system restore DVD, et al? (Just editing this to get my correct ID associated with it.)
