• DHCPD (Slackware) - Disabling auto-generation of gateway as DNS server

  Good day, I am using a Linux workstation on Slackware 13.37. One "problem" I have had to deal with ever since 11.0 is the following: DNS servers are queried and determined at startup by DHCP daemon (DHCPD) This is invoked at startup by a script located at /etc/rc.d/rc.dhcpd My DNS servers for my ISP are resolved correctly, and are stored in a list located at /etc/resolv.conf However, the one annoying problem is that my gateway IP (ie: 192.168.1.1) is always automatically put at the top of the list in resolv.conf, meaning I have to always wait for a timeout before a valid DNS server is used to resolve an address (ie: timeout on 192.168.1.1 because it is not actually a DNS server, then DHCP uses the next server in the list). I could lower my DNS resolution timeout so the gateway query times out quicker, but that's not what I want, as I don't want to degrade the abilities of legitimate DNS servers. What I would like to do is change how DHCPD operates so that it does NOT put my gateway IP address at the beginning of this list. I've searched via "man dhcpd", etc, and haven't found the exact answer yet. Any help on this issue is appreciated. Thank you all in advance for your time and assistance.

• Synergy Windows 7 Screen Saver issue

  I have synergy server running on a Windows 7 laptop, I have another laptop running windows XP as the Client. When synergy is first started the Screen Saver will start after the 5 mins of inactivity no problem but after mouse/keyboard input then waiting another 5 minutes + the screen saver will not come back on. The mouse is on the server NOT the client. I have tried unchecking "sync screen savers" I have tried right clicking and running the synergy server as administrator. I have tried versions 1.3.4, 1.3.6, 1.4.2 both 32 bit and 64 bit. I have tried running in XP compatibility mode. I have tried disconnecting the client. It feels like I've tried everything. The setup is as follows: The server is below the Client, the client is above the server. The server has a secondary monitor attached to it and yes I've tried running without the secondary monitor. the sever is an acer 5552G-5828. Any help would be awesome! I love synergy but without the screensavers it is annoying. Thanks!

• no administrator password for Windows 7

  I'm a secretary and my boss set up my new Windows 7 OptiPlex 7010 (Dell) computer for me while I was on vacation (he does not remember setting any "administrator" password). We are a small office so there is no system password set, either. I've used it for 6 months, all the while I couldn't access network drives, etc., without an administrator password. It was annoying, but I could still get my work done. Finally, on a slow day I took it upon myself to "fix" the problem, and in all my infinite wisdom, I managed to change my user account from administrator to standard user, so now I really can't do anything. I can't download or install any programs, move or rename files, etc. I tried the Dell suggested solution, but the BIOS tells me there is no password set, so it has to be a Windows 7 problem. All the solutions I have come across require an administrator password to let me do them. What can I do to find out the admin password so I can use my own darn computer!? Is there a default admin password?

  I have an SSL certificate which is valid for multiple (sub-) domains. In Apache I have configured this as follows: In /etc/apache2/apache2.conf NameVirtualHost <my ip>:443 Then for one named virtual host I have <VirtualHost <my ip>:443> ServerName ... SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile ... SSLCertificateKeyFile ... SSLCertificateChainFile ... SSLCACertificateFile ... </VirtualHost> Finally, for every other site I want to be accessible over HTTPS I just have a <VirtualHost <my ip>:443> ServerName ... </VirtualHost> The good news is that it works. However, when I start Apache I get warning messages [warn] Init: SSL server IP/port conflict: Domain A:443 (...) vs. Domain B:443 (...) [warn] Init: SSL server IP/port conflict: Domain C:443 (...) vs. Domain B:443 (...) [warn] Init: You should not use name-based virtual hosts in conjunction with SSL!! So, my question is: how should I be configuring this? Clearly from the warning messages I am doing something wrong (although it does work!), however, the above configuration was the only one I could get to work. It is somewhat annoying as the configuration files have an explicit dependence on my IP address.

• DVD-burner disappears when using grub

  This is a rather annoying problem I have with Linux on my laptop. Whenever I install any Linux distro that relies on grub (which is about 99 % apparently) it will mess up my DVD-drive and the drive will not be recognized after booting, no matter the OS (Ubunntu, Arch, Windows Vista or 7). I know the problem has nothing to do the DVD-drive itself, because I bought a new one a few months ago. I am also sure that grub is messing the drive up, because I have tried to use LILO, which worked fine (except for horrible boot times.) This problem have persisted through about 3-4 years and it is a pretty bad show stopper whenever I want to work with Linux. I had hoped it would get fixed over time, but no one seems to have the exact problem I have. The drive is connected with an IDE connection. Update: The old drive was a Toshiba Samsung SN-S082. I don't know the model number of the new one, but it is HP (I think). Things I have tried to fix it: Mess about with some BIOS settings like enabling AHCI and change some IDE settings. Installing a different boot loader DOES fix the problem but I would like to use grub.

• How can I stop SipVicious ('friendly-scanner') from flooding my SIP server?

  I run an SIP server which listens on UDP port 5060, and needs to accept authenticated requests from the public Internet. The problem is that occasionally it gets picked up by people scanning for SIP servers to exploit, who then sit there all day trying to brute force the server. I use credentials that are long enough that this attack will never feasibly work, but it is annoying because it uses up a lot of bandwidth. I have tried setting up fail2ban to read the Asterisk log and ban IPs that do this with iptables, which stops Asterisk from seeing the incoming SIP REGISTER attempts after 10 failed attempts (which happens in well under a second at the rate of attacks I'm seeing). However, SipVicious derived scripts do not immediately stop sending after getting an ICMP Destination Host Unreachable - they keep hammering the connection with packets. The time until they stop is configurable, but unfortunately it seems that the attackers doing these types of brute force attacks generally set the timeout to be very high (attacks continue at a high rate for hours after fail2ban has stopped them from getting any SIP response back once they have seen initial confirmation of an SIP server). Is there a way to make it stop sending packets at my connection?

• No sound out of headphone port

  I cannot get sound out of the headphone port. Headphones are plugged in, and sound comes out of the internal speakers. Windows behaves normally (sound switches to headphones when headphones are inserted). It did work in Linux at one point, but something changed, we're just not sure what. Rebooting doesn't fix. This appears to occur whether or not PulseAudio is running. Things I've tried: Rebooting. No effect. Booting into Windows. It works properly, so probably not a hardware issue. All of alsamixer. My only controls are this: "Master" Volume bar & mutable, unmuted. Controls volume. "PCM" Volume bar only. 100%. "S/PDIF" Mutable only, currently muted, has no effect. "S/PDIF" Default PCM", Mutable only, currently unmuted, has no effect. Killing PulseAudio. No effect. (It also won't stay dead! Something appears to be restarting it, and I can't tell what, but it is annoying as fuck.) alsactl init 0, no effect. sudo rm -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state, no effect. • How to configure default text selection behavior in Windows XP, 7? (eg. mouse click selects entire word vs. mouse click inserts an active cursor)

  I find the mouse click behavior of Windows XP and Windows 7 annoying and intrusive. I don't remember Windows NT being quite this bad, or MacOS 7 - 10 which I used in the nineties. When I'm using a browser and I click on a text field - for example, the address bar, or a search box - the first thing which happens is the entire field is selected.Subsequent clicks seem to select parts of words, often deciding arbitrarily to exclude or include adjacent punctuation. The same in Excel and other apps, and when trying to rename files, so I'm assuming this behavior comes from a system-wide text handling routine. I frequently want to edit text, cut out or replace odd parts of the insides of words or chunks of sentences, and often find that to get a simple cursor to insert I have to click the mouse up to 4 times in succession. I've had to do a lot of this recently and it has been driving me insane. Is there a place at the system level where this can be configured? In a perfect world, I'd like a single click on a new text area to insert a cursor point, and a rapid double click to select the entire area. Words or text within the area could be selected by inserting a cursor, holding down the mouse button and dragging to the exact point where I want the selection to end - even if that's in the middle of a word. No, I don't need or want Windows to "smart select" a word or sentence for me. I've looked in the Mouse and Accessibility Options control panels (Windows XP). Haven't found anything even close. • Disable touch pad for mouse button region on new HP pavillion models?

  i bought a new hp pavillion dv6 series laptop. the laptop itself is fine but it has the new hp touchpad mouse which i absolutely hate. its such a stupid problem to have with a computer. the left and right mouse buttons are, themselves, part of of the touchpad, meaning that if i tap the buttons without actually pressing them down, it registers the same way as the mouse pad (the cursor moves, tap to click activates, etc.) this is a major annoyance because it prevents you from operating the mouse pad with anything more than a single finger; if for example i use my right hand index finger to move the cursor using the touch pad and rest my left hand index finger on the left mouse button for more efficient mouse-ing, the mouse will react as if im trying to use 2 fingers to move it and it will either just sit there or will spaz out. the only way this works is if i keep the finger that is resting on the mouse button absolutely still, which is very difficult and, therefore, very annoying. also, even if i do abide by the arbitrary new decree of single-finger mousepad operation, i still have a problem because when i press down on the left or right click buttons, the mouse moves slightly, what with the buttons also being part of the touch pad and all. this would not be that hard to avoid except that they decided to also make the buttons much harder to press down. now whenever i go to click something, i press hard on the mouse button, causing my finger to slightly move or roll or flatten out a bit, causing the cursor to move slightly, and causing me to click on something different. what i would like to know is if there is anyway that i can disable the touch pad on the buttons. i have gone through all of the settings under the synaptics menus but i cannot find anything about this. did i miss something in one of the menus? if not, then are there any updated drivers that allow for toggling of this function?

• Nginx proxy upstream cached?

  Attempting to resolve an issue that's been annoying me for a bit. I've distilled the symptoms into a set of reproducible steps: I have two sites, siteA, and siteB. They are both Node.js applications running on different ports (for the sake of example, 4567 and 4568) Both applications have their own file in sites_available (plus a symlink from sites_enabled), which contain the directives proxy_pass http://node_siteA/ and proxy_pass http://node_siteB/ respectively, inside of a location block. They also each have an upstream block (defined globally?): upstream node_siteA { upstream node_siteB { server 127.0.0.1:4567; server 127.0.0.1:4568; } } Site A and Site B have nothing to do with each other. Yes, I am restarting (reloading, actually) nginx every time I make a change. If I take down site B and attempt to access it via the web, I am served site A. Why is this? Thoughts Other times, when I create a new Site C, for example, nginx refuses to show me anything except "Welcome to nginx!" for ~5 minutes. This suggests a resolver timeout, perhaps? When I access Site B after its config has been deleted, and it sends me to Site A, this sounds like nginx sending me to servers in a round-robin fashion...

• Servers/Websites Keep Going Down

  Okay, I'm a noobie. I know how to build and compose a website, but I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to servers and server commands, etc. I've recently had a problem with all of my sites on our servers going down all at once and then I have to go in and reboot the server for them to come up again. At first this was annoying, but now it is becoming agonizing as it now takes 3-4 reboots for the websites to come back up. I contacted support for my hosting, but they are not being very helpful. They just keep telling me what the issue might be and basically telling me that I'm going to have to look into it and figure it out, which really isn't possible since I know nothing. Anyway, here are the things they said were possible reasons: They said I have "strange logs" in my Apache webserver log, error: sh: fetch: command not found. My php.ini memory limit is: 256M which is very high. It should be 32M or 64M. Server is reaching Max Clients, meaning we have more than 150 visitors at a time. (They supposedly "fixed" this, but the sites/server are still going down) I have some Wordpress sites with plugins getting errors like: PHP Warning: pack(): Type H: illegal hex digit G in... PHP Fatal error: Cannot use object of type stdClass as array in... PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in... PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function file_exists() in... PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' I know that's a lot, but I really am at wits end and have no idea what to do now. If anyone could maybe give me some advice or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks! • ubuntu's average load never below "0.00 0.01 0.05"

  I have several ubuntu 12.04 VMs running on a ubuntu 12.04 KVM host. Those of the virtual machines that are totally idle with no services (except syslog and the other "small" standard stuff of a fresh installation) show a constant load of "0.00 0.01 0.05" in top/htop as average 1/5/15. When there are "real" applications running, the load averages behave perfectly normal but they never fall below the mentioned values. • How can I get around windows 8.1 store (& metro apps) not working with UAC disabled

  I have UAC disabled because it is annoying and causes more problems that it could ever possibly solve, at least for me. Here is yet another problem, and it seems to be due to a recent update as I don't remember it in the past. Even with a MS account, I can't use the store because UAC is disabled. How can I get around this? Short term I can just enable it, reboot, use store, disable it, reboot and be on my way but there has to be a better way (other than MS getting their software completely right - like that will happen anytime, ever) Edit: Apparently this is far more of an issue than I originally thought. Now every(?)many metro apps requires UAC. Anyone aware of the update this got rolled in with? Thankfully netflix isn't affected which is the only metro app I use at the moment. What I see: Event Log info: Activation of app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: This app can't be activated when UAC is disabled. • Thousands of visits a day from untraceable traffic to website - Serious issue

  At the end of January we noticed a spike in traffic to what JetPack stats says was home/archive page and what Google was classifying as going to /gaming/ which is an archive list in WordPress. This started off as ~3,000 unique visitors and jumped up to 65,000 unique visitors in one day, again all to the "home" page. This happened over a course of a couple of weeks and we thought we were getting attacked. The traffic then dropped off for a few days but then came back but came back as only about ~15,000 uniques a day and has been like that every day since. We came to the conclusion that something wasn't tracking right somewhere and this is legitimate traffic and brushed it off. Now here comes the problem, Google AdSense has just disabled our account for "invalid clicks". We are trying to figure out where this traffic is coming from and stop it if it's not legitimate or figure out a way to track it correctly. Specs for the site: Dedicated server running CentOS 6 with nginx, php-fpm and MySQL. The site is built in WordPress and we use CloudFlare and W3 Total Cache. Analytics being used are Google Analytics, Quantcast, Alexa and Compete. Any kind of help would be awesome. UPDATE: I'm finding more people with the same type of problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution. http://netmeg.com/bot-attack/ http://stkywll.com/2012/03/02/annoying-cyborgs-attach-distort-analytics/ After looking at the access logs I noticed they were all CloudFlare IP's. I looked into that and found out CloudFlare acts as a proxy and there was a way to fix the logs in nginx. They are coming from many different ISP's in the US. They are going to /games/ or /gaming/ (/games/ redirects to /gaming/) and all seem to have the same user agent of Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0).

  I had a RAID 1 on my system which has a Gigabyte GA 8N SLI motherboard with a Nvidia chipset.(Nvidia Raid IDE ROM BIOS 4.84) When the system was working probably there used to be an icon on the system try which showed my two RAID disks. Bu after my friend accidentally clicked on the "Remove drive safely" icon while trying to disconnect her USB, I noticed that the RAID system wasn't working. After a reboot there was suddenly a failure message during boot screen. When I enter the Nvidia RAID setup utility (F10) I can see that both drives are degraded and that won't change even if I get into them and press R for Rebuild. Other options are only Delete and Exit. When I boot to Windows (XP Pro 32 Bit) I can see both my disks with the same data on each of them but my RAID 1 is broken. It's a relief to see that at least my RAID 1 was active but it's annoying not being able to rebuild it. Is there a way where I can rebuild my RAID 1 without having to delete the array and build it again? Cause I don't want to backup 400 Gigs of data and then recopy it to my drives... (Disks 2 x Seagate ST3500418 AS SATA Drives)

• All computers on network get stuck waiting for some sites indefinetely

  This happens across three computers, running windows 7 and Ubuntu, firefox, opera, and chrome (all latest versions). I am connected to the internet through a Verizon wireless usb modem. When I try to open some web pages they will never finish loading (and usually never even show anything). The status bar at the bottom of the browser will display "Waiting for X" The servers it gets stuck on include: platform.twitter.com s7.addthis.com connect.facebook.net ajax.googleapis.com 2mdn.net Ive been getting away with just blocking them in AdBlock up until now, however the last two have been causing problems. There are some sites which require googleapis.com to load correctly, and some that wont ever load unless its blocked. eBay requires access to 2mdn.net to load pictures. On top of this its getting really annoying having to update AdBlock across all these computers whenever a new site pops up. I'm hoping there's some easier way to fix this? The different sites causing the freeze indicate to me that it's either a problem on my end (somehow?) or some server side software that got updated with a new bug?

• How do I get rid of these "There is a problem with your tablet driver" messages?

  Every time I run certain applications (including but not limited to GIMP, Microsoft Visual Studio, and 3DS Max), I get the following message box: There is a problem with your tablet driver. Please reboot your system. If the problem persists reinstall or update the driver. Obviously I've tried rebooting and that hasn't fixed anything. Secondly, I'm not running a tablet PC. This is just Windows XP SP3 running on a Dell Precision PWS490 desktop workstation. How do I get rid of these error messages? The applications still load normally after dismissing them, but they're rather annoying. Using Process Explorer, I got the call stack from the message box. It's coming from wintab32.dll. Here's the call stack when running GIMP (irrelevant frames omitted): ... 8 USER32.dll!MessageBoxA+0x45 9 wintab32.dll!WTMgrPacketHookExA+0x44a 10 libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll!gdk_display_list_devices+0x37 ... So, does anyone know how I can get an updated version of wintab32.dll or have any other ideas? I've been keeping my system up to date with Windows Updates. The timestamp on wintab32.dll is 2007-03-30 17:38, and its MD5 sum is ffdc332007c9dc6dd346c8ac2b09a015.

• linux shutdown hang with wifi cifs mounts

  Since fedora 15 (and now with 16) it seems that wireless clients take a long while to shutdown when they have network filesystems mounted at shutdown time. I've pushed out a cifs mount via puppet, and all clients have it, including those on wireless. If say a laptop is on a wired connection it shuts down just fine, but if its on the wifi at the time (and no wired connection) it'll hang at the fedora f logo. I'm not sure if its indefinite or just a really long while, but ill give it a test when i shut this machine down in a second. Needless to say its pretty annoying, so is there a way of causing the machine to shutdown even if network connectivity has been lost at unmount time, -- or an official way to reorder events so the wireless card is kept up until after the unmount happens during the shut down process (short of writing a custom script for shutdowns which is a bit of a kludge) ? It does this on multiple machines, and all started doing it when we went from fedora 14 to 15. It was such an obvious issue i'd kind of assumed someone must have reported it or there was an easy fix, but i've not discovered anything yet. • "Document in ADF" on Canon MX340

  I have a Canon MX340 multifunction printer. Recently, it keeps saying "Document in ADF" when I turn on the printer. I've tried clearing this multiple times, but as soon as the feeder wheels stop turning, in an attempt to clear the document feeder, it just pops up the same error again. This is particularly annoying, as it blocks all functions on the device - I cannot print, even though printing has no interaction with the document feeder. I've opened up the feeder device, as much as can be done with fingers alone. There just doesn't seem to be anything in there. I ran a sheet of paper through about six times, just to see if some dust might be getting in the way, and I've blown out the feeder with air. Still nothing. At this point, I don't care too much about the ADF working, I just want to disable whatever sensor is tripping this error message. Any ideas? I found this thread online, where a user has the same problem. But no resolution was reached there.

• Windows 7 Media Center: sometimes no sound on a TV channel

  Problem Sometimes, recorded TV shows have no sound. This is of course very annoying because the recorded show is worthless. Also, when switching channels while watching live TV, sometimes a channel has no sound. This is always solved by switching channel again and then back (most often, once will do the trick). Media Center doesn't do this trick by itself when recording of course, so that's the bigger issue - but the cause is certainly the same. Details The computer is running a newly installed Windows 7 and Windows Media Center. It has 2 different tuner-cards installed. Both are installed with signed and up-to-date Win7 drivers and appear OK in Device Manager. Both tuners get the same antenna signal, from a split cable from the wall. The cable delivers analog cable TV (40+ channels) and digital cable TV (4 channels) at the same time. Both tuners have been configured to receive both analog and digital channels. This only happens with analog channels. How can I fix the no-sound problem? Update: I've now spent some time with the computer to try and pinpoint the problem, but I've had little success so far: I flipped through the channels until one didn't have sound, then I disconnected the antenna cable from one of the tuners. It was the right one because then the video also went away. I flipped lots more channels to see if the other card also would come up mute once but I never had a channel without sound. It might still be possible, I don't know. Then I disconnected the "good" tuner and connected the "bad" tuner and again flipped lots of channels but again I never had a channel without sound. It seems to me that the problem is erratic. It happens on any channel, and I haven't ruled out yet that it only happens on one tuner.

• Mapped network drive connection timeout

  I have server "Alpha" and server "Beta". Server Beta has a shared folder, that is mapped on server Alpha as "X:" On server Alpha there is a .vbs script that runs and take some files on local drive and copy them on X: drive. My issue is if no user log on server Alpha for a long time, it seems like the tcp connection underneath the mapped drive has a timeout, and the vbs script fails on the copy of file. As soon I log with remote desktop on Alpha server, the .vbs is successfull on the copy of the files. I have made many tests, using file logs to check what was happening and I found no way to refresh the connection and let the .vbs be able to copy files unattended.. I have always to log with remote desktop on Alpha server to refresh the connection and let the .vbs copy the files without issues. What can I do to avoid to log every time? The .vbs script runs 3 times a day and is very annoying. I do not have control over server Beta so I cannot change anything there, and I am very limited on changes I can do on server Alpha ( I cannot change registry and that sort of things)

In bash, to display the name of the current program in the GNU Screen hardstatus line takes only two configuration lines. First, tell screen what the end of your prompt normally looks like, and supply a default title for a window when you are sitting at in the shell: shelltitle "$ |bash" Next, place this escape sequence in the PS1 variable, before the characters that normally terminate the prompt '$ ' in this case: \033k\033\\\ This technique works, to a point. The hardstatus window title is updated to the name of the currently running program, and then switches back to the default title shortly after execution is finished. One major problem, however, is that this escape string is not escaped itself, causing line-wrapping problems with commands longer than the initial line. This was annoying, so I set out looking for a solution. Turns out, simply escaping the previous escape sequence corrects line wrapping: [\033k]\[\033\\\] Great! My hardstatus window title still updates to the name of the currently running program, and now my longer commands wrap to the second line correctly. However, with this new escape sequence in my PS1, screen updates the window title to the actual command I am typing, not simply the name of the current program once it is executed. I am wondering, has anyone gotten this working correctly - i.e. line wrapping and proper updating of the hardstatus window title? Thanks!

• Plug-in device to front USB computer *sometimes* restarts

  I've got a strange problem that very occasionally (maybe once a month) when I plug-in something to the front USB on my computer, the computer suddently restarts. This also happens when I touch the front USB ports sometimes. This has been going on for a few years and a lot of the components in my PC have changed. I thought it was my home wiring, but I moved last year and it still happened. I thought maybe it was the motherboard, but that was upgraded 9 months ago and it still happens. I thought it was my case, but I changed that recently and it still happens. I thought maybe it was my PSU, but I upgraded that yesterday and it still happens. I'm pretty sure this is an electro-static thing, but I thought that modern computers have protection against this sort of thing. Maybe I should move my case off the floor (carpet) and stop wearing songs all the time. Edit: Just to clarify this is a computer that I built. The components have been upgraded throughout the years and it's not much the same computer anymore. This doesn't happen very often, but it is annoying, because I don't know what the cause is. Anyone have any ideas?
