• Ubuntu Server - Power failure leads to boot failure

  I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 LTS on an ext4 partition. Whenever my system looses power suddenly, It doesn't boot into the normal procedure to fix the problems automatically, but switches to the busy box shell (where it says Kernel Panic : No init found) So I guess kernel is refusing to mount the filesystem when it is not clean, since when I boot up using a Live CD and fsck it, it boots up correctly. How can I force kernel to mount the filesystem, even if it is not clean ?, so that automated fsck on system startup fixes the problems... (or it's a grub problem ?) • "powershell has stopped working" on PS exit after creating IIS User

  On a Windows Server 2012 box, I'm using PS to create a new IIS User (for automated deployments using MSDeploy). The command itself appears to work fine -- the user is created -- but as soon as I exit my PowerShell session (typing exit or just closing the command window), a dialog is displayed stating "powershell has stopped working", with the following details: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: PowerShell NameOfExe: powershell.exe FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.2.9200.16628 InnermostExceptionType: Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObject OutermostExceptionType: Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObject DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown DeepestFrame: System.StubHelpers.StubHelpers.GetCOMIPFromRCW ThreadName: unknown OS Version: 6.2.9200.2.0.0.400.8 Locale ID: 1033 The PS commands in question are: [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.Web.Management") [Microsoft.Web.Management.Server.ManagementAuthentication]::CreateUser("Foo", "Bar") Why is this happening and how can I avoid it? • Windows Server 2008 x86 Services for Unix SDK (SUA) RSH

  Running RSH commands on a Windows box against a Linux box works only for the administrator user. Is there a file somewhere that has a list of users that can run commands remotely? More Info The server configuration is automated by VMware's product... There's no /etc/hosts.equiv file setup but there is a /root/.rhosts file with an entry of [IP ADDRESS] +. The SUA client C:\Windows\SUA\bin\rsh can login when run as the local administrator account but no other user can login. The error is: rcmd: unknown user: [username]. The command I'm trying to run is: rsh -l root [IP ADDRESS] ls.

• Parallel prologue and epilogue in Grid Engine

  We have a cluster being used to run MPI jobs for a customer. Previously this cluster used Torque as the scheduler, but we are transitioning to Grid Engine 6.2u5 (for some other features). Unfortunately, we are having trouble duplicating some of our maintenance scripts in the Grid Engine environment. In Torque, we have a prologue.parallel script which is used to carry out an automated health-check on the node. If this script returns a fail condition, Torque will helpfully offline the node and re-queue the job to use a different group of nodes. In Grid Engine, however, the queue "prolog" only runs on the head node of the job. We can manually run our prologue script from the startmpi.sh initialization script, for the mpi parallel environment; but I can't figure out how to detect a fail condition and carry out the same "mark offline and requeue" procedure. Any suggestions?

• Email etiquette checker?

  Sometimes, in the heat of getting a lot of things done, I don't read emails I send as closely as I should. Is there an automated way to pop up warnings before a potentially-unpolite email is sent? I'm thinking about something that would say "wait, why don't you have a 'please' or 'would you' in that message?" I'm using Thunderbird 2 on Ubuntu 9.04. I may be willing to switch email clients if another program offers this. Thanks for your help!

• Nexenta/OpenSolaris filer kernel panic/crash

  I've an x4540 Sun storage server running NexentaStor Enterprise. It's serving NFS over 10GbE CX4 for several VMWare vSphere hosts. There are 30 virtual machines running. For the past few weeks, I've had random crashes spaced 10-14 days apart. This system used to open OpenSolaris and was stable in that arrangement. The crashes trigger the automated system recovery feature on the hardware, forcing a hard system reset. • How to automate wIntegrate import/export?

  Our company uses pic database and wIntegrate 4.02 to interface with. How would I go about automating the .wis files for importing and exporting through wIntegrate? Is there some type of macro, software solution or built in routine I can use? At the moment I manually login to pic using wIntegrate and goto run - querybuilder and select the desired .wis script for importing and exporting data and select ok to run. This is not a solution, it needs to be automated. Anyone? Is there some type of point a click freeware recording software? I hate to do a hack job like that but I'm running out of ideas and no one seems to have worked with this software before...

• Skype keypad tones

  Hi, When I push a number on the Skype keypad (or use the number keys on the keyboard) no tone is emitted. This happens both when dialling a number and if I push a key during a call. This makes it impossible for me to use Skype with automated telephone systems that require you to use the keypad to enter data or choose between various options. I spoke to somebody who works in a call centre about this and they indicated that somebody had mentioned that it's possible to disable (DTMF) tones in Skype. I've looked through all the Skype options and can't find any way to enable/disable DTMF tones. If somebody knows how I can do this, or has another suggestion for fixing the problem, please let me know. I'm using version 4.2.0.152 of Skype. Thanks, Don

• /lib/udev/net.agent causing high CPU usage

  We have a number of Soekris boxes running Debian Squeeze. They were installed through an automated process consisting of using deboostrap and copying it unto a Compact Flash card. We use puppet to manage the configuration of all these boxes. Before Debian Squeeze, they were running Voyage Linux which is just a "lighter" version of Debian. Since we have switched, we're seeing the /lib/udev/net.agent process take up an aweful lot of CPU. We have so far been unable to find any clue as to what this really does and why it's taking up some much CPU time. In htop we see the following : We are seeing absolutly no syslog messages related to this process so we're a bit lost... So, I am looking for pointers as to what this process does in general and what could be the potential cause of such CPU usage.

• PHP script timed out, or otherwise killed on Apache under CentOS (shared host)

  When trying to run a PHP script (CentOS, Apache, PHP 5.2), that may take a long time, it is apparently killed after 45 minutes. PHP script is invoked from a web browser, and in certain situations, it will do a lot of work processing a POP3 mailbox and sending emails as part of an automated monitoring system. Running the PHP script from the command line might be a better option, but I want to understand what is going on so far. I ran a test script, and it appeared to finally give an internal server error (500?) after 45 minutes. Where is this limit set and what is killing the script, if that is what is happening? It's running on a shared host on Hostgator.com.

• Scripting a Windows 2008 Cluster from Windows 2003

  Our current environment is all Windows 2003. When we migrate a new version of our service to the cluster, we first stop the service with a command like: cluster.exe <clusterName> resource "<serviceName>" /offline We do similarly after the migrate to bring the service back online. Now, we are upgrading our environment to new Windows 2008 servers. However, our build/migrate machine will remain Windows 2003. When issuing the same command from Windwos 2003 to Windows 2008, we get: System error 1722 has occurred (0x000006ba). The RPC server is unavailable. We need to be able to remotely administer a Windows 2008 cluster from a Windows 2003 server in an automated fashion (such as the command-line cluster.exe utility). Is this possible? Thanks, Gideon

  Suppose I have a preconfigured AMANDA server running automated network backups of directories specified in my disklists file. Normally, AMANDA will backup targets disks to /dumps/amanda. Is there any single command or method to perform a manual, one-time, full backup dump to another destination drive? I ask since I'm investigating the possibility of introducing rotating external hard-drive backups for offsite storage and I want to leverage our existing backup strategies wherever possible. Ideally, a full backup restore should be achievable from only any one of these offsite backup discs.

• How to install Web Deployment Agent

  I am trying to setup the TFS automated deploys. But I keep getting the following error message when running the deploy. It appears that I have a service called "Web Management Service", but the error message says that I need "We Deploy Agent Service". I tried installing Web Deploy 2.0, but the server said that I already had this installed. What can I do to fix this problem? Error Code: ERROR_DESTINATION_NOT_REACHABLE Could not connect to the destination computer ("myServer"). On the destination computer, make sure that Web Deploy is installed and that the required process ("Web Deployment Agent Service") is started. --Update-- Looks like the Web Deployment agent is not installed by default. I had to re-install MSDeploy, select Change or Custom, then add the Web Deploy Agent service. Now the deploy works correctly.

• Automatically save/download e-mail body to disk

  Is there a program that will allow me to connect to my mail server (IMAP) and automatically save certain new e-mails to disk? Multiple times a day I receive automated e-mail updates about pending jobs from a system that processes some information for us. The data in these e-mails is written as plain-text within the body of the message. I would like to download the newest message, parse it, and display it on my desktop. The last two parts I can manage ok - it's just the automatic downloading that is posing a challenge. I don't use Outlook (I do use Thunderbird), but would prefer not to have the client open to make this happen. I'm currently running Win7.

Is this something malicious and if so what should I do about it?

Typically, you use kinit first and then ssh: > kinit user@DOMAIN user@DOMAIN's Password: (enter password) > ssh user@host (successful login) I'd like to simply run ssh user@host and automatically check for a Kerberos ticket. If one isn't there, I'd like it to get a ticket and then log in. > kdestroy > ssh user@host user@DOMAIN's Password: (enter password) (successful login) (log off of host) > klist (show ticket info) I'd like this to be configured on a per-host basis, as not every host I log into supports Kerberos.

• Has anyone used products by StorSimple? [closed]

  Their products are storage systems similar to NetApp, but their "hook" is they provide automated tiered storage with the third tier being Cloud providers like Amazon and Azure. They have an interesting story in which they provide primary SAN/iSCSI storage to VMWare and Exchange and at the same time do snaphots to the Cloud. This provides a possible DR option if you have a second system at an alternate location. I was impressed, but I've never heard of them so I'm looking for input and advise on the product. • Detecting man-in-the-middle attacks?

  There seem to be many possible ways to create man-in-the-middle attacks on public access points, by stealing the access point's local IP address with ARP spoofing. The possible attacks range from forging password request fields, to changing HTTPS connections to HTTP, and even the recently discovered possibilit of injecting malicious headers in the beginning of secure TLS connections. However, it seems to be claimed that these attacks are not very common. It would be interesting to see for myself. What ways are there to detect if such an attack is being attempted by someone on the network? I guess getting served a plain HTTP login page would be an obvious clue, and of course you could run Wireshark and keep reading all the interesting ARP traffic... But an automated solution would be a tiny bit more handy. Something that analyzes stuff on the background and alerts if an attack is detected on the network. It would be interesting to see for myself if these attack are actually going on somewhere.

• Windows 2000 Inaccessible Boot Device

  I am working with a machine that had its motherboard die. The machine is running Windows 2000 for legacy software. After the motherboard died I used disk2vhd to perform a physical to virtual transfer. The drive data seemed to copy over to the vhd file well. However, whenever i try to boot I get a message saying Inaccessible Boot Device So far I have tried several things to fix it. fixMBR fixBoot chkdsk windows 2000 automated repair Also, I have attempted to open the registry of the vhd without any success. There is another fix that i have seen suggested that requires editing the registry. Is it possible to open a Windows 2000 hive in another OS or another copy of Windows 2000? One other thing to note is that the error appears in all of Virtual PC 2007, Hyper-V and VMWare Player. Does anyone know how to get past this?

I've been able to get a simple web app up an running from a base Red Hat VM using chef-solo. Our end goal is to use Chef (or another system) to automatically deploy application topologies to the cloud as we run builds. Our process would basically run like so: Our web app code, dependencies, and chef cookbooks are stored in SCM A build is executed and greats a single package for images to acquire and test against The build engine then deploys new cloud images that run a chef client to get packages installed. The images acquire the cookbooks from SCM or the Chef server and install everything to get up and running What are the benefits and/or use cases for getting a Chef Server running? Are there any major benefits to have a Chef Server hold and acquire the cookbooks from SCM vs. using chef-solo and having a script that will pull the cookbooks from SCM?

My question is simple, is there a way using a tool like Puppet to do it without a painful learning curve? (or via other tools like http://ylastic.com) If yes, how?

• What does the email header "X-CAA-SPAM" refer to?

  I've got an application that sends out notification emails to users of the application (this is not spam; the information in these emails is solicited and useful, and is also a feature turned off by default and must be enabled by the user). The app is still in beta, and one of our testers reports that the notification emails are going to his junk mail folder in Outlook 2003. This is the only reported case of this, but I asked him to send me the email headers from the message, and I noticed that there is a header there labeled "X-CAA-SPAM" with a value of 00000 . I'm a programmer, so I'm fairly green in the world of successful automated emails - does anyone know if this header is the culprit? If not, any suggestions?

• Is there a free-embedded SSH solution ?

  Hi, I'm working for an important company which has some severe network policies. I'd like to connect from my work, to my home linux server (mainly because it allows me to monitor my home-automated installation, but that's off-topic) but of course, any ssh connection (tcp port 22) to an external site is blocked. While I understand why this is done (to avoid ssh tunnels I guess), I really need to have some access to my box. (Well, "need" might be exagerated, but that would be nice ;) Do you know any web-based solution that I could install on my home linux server that would give me some pseudo-terminal (served using https) embedded in a web page ? I'm not necessarily looking for something graphical: a simple web-embedded ssh console would do the trick. Or do you guys see any other solution that wouldn't compromise network security ?   I'm not sure if this is possible, but this is my goal: At the end of the day, I want to be able to turn off all the computers in the domain from a client. My account has sufficient privileges to shutdown any single computer remotely using shutdown -I, and I can RDP into any computer in the domain. However, is there an automated technique that does this? the computers in the domain are predictably named (computer1, computer2, etc), but than manipulating a list of 2000 computers in shutdown -I is pretty clumsy. Is there a way to shutdown every single computer in the domain from a single client? The domain server is windows 2003, and the clients all run windows xp thanks
