• Building a website, wondering how to add news to it? Details inside. [closed]

  On the home page of my website, I'd like to add a "news" kind section, where I can add blogs and such. Now from my understanding if this was all done in hard coding I'd have to go into the code just to add stuff to it. I've looked at things like drupal and I get how those work, but I how would I be able to add this to my site? The same kind of concept? Also, one more thing, what does inc operating php into a website offer? like better looks or general preformence? I don't understand this. Excuse my grammar/spelling. • Ready to Open source the software, but want to make some money out of it.

  I'm an UG Student and an Entrepreneur. I have started a small company with which I'm trying to provide solutions, to various companies in my city, through my software. I put in 30-40 hours of coding and development. I've been a huge fan of Open Source projects and I've also built by software on python. But now when it comes to selling my software to my customers, I expect money. (Am I being a Hypocrite?) Is there any OSS license under which I can make money and also make my source open? Please suggest. Or any other way to make money with my softwares? (I guess I deserve some credit. If not the code, atleast the ideas? :D )

  not exactly sure where I should post this but I have a question about filing for software patents. If I have an idea for a UI feature, how do I go about patenting that feature. I don't have any code written and I'm afraid my coding skills aren't up to snuff in order to code the thing I imagined but aside from that, can anyone give me any general guidance and info? I've gone through the CIPO site (Canada's patent office) but haven't come away with enough information on what I'm trying to patent but what I have understood is that I have to very thorough in describing what I'm trying to patent and showing that it could work. If anyone has gone through the process of patenting software, can you tell me about your experience? I would like to hear about US and Canadian experiences Thank you!

  I am in the pre-coding phase of creating a website. I know that it will be account based (users have to register/login to use the features). I also know that the server will have to do certain operations that are timer based, that is to say that user will have events that will trigger at a point chosen by the user and do something. I am searching for a good choice in server-side technology, and was wondering what my options are and what the best choice is. I would prefer open technology and something that doesn't use interpreted languages (Java, .net). My first thought is PHP + PGSQL for serverside and HTML+CSS+JS for clients, but I am still looking at my options.

  Hi all ! I am a noob to web services world. I need to develop a login validator module and expose it as a service. I want it to be service independent, i.e I should have the option of exposing it as a SOAP service or REST service in the future. What pattern should I follow ? Sorry if I am unclear in my requirements, I can clarify as per need. Thanks !! Edit : I am using Eclipse as an IDE and Jersey libraries. I am not into any framework, simply using the MVC pattern. I find a lot of difference between SOAP ann REST methods, so I want my methods to be implementation independent - i.e I should be easily able to use my method through a SOAP or REST service call as per need. What should I do for maximum flexibility ?

  I'm a web developer who mostly works with the LAMP stack when it comes to my own projects. Most of the time I just start coding on a project and fixing bugs and adding features as I go along. Often I'll try to use an existing solution such as Wordpress or Drupal. Now that I'm thinking of creating my own web application with businesses as the target group, I feel there's a need for proper analysis and design.   I am doing a video player. I have the following in my project folder: these four dirs should each be on their own line: /source /sample_applications /images /videos Right now the repo just includes the /source directory...which is code only. It is on my local computer. I am thinking of adding it to git hub. My question is: should I add the sample apps, the images and the videos to the repo? Is that something that people normally do and that other people want people to do? Can git even handle videos(noob here)?

• Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

  I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones. • stuck in while loop python

  I am creating a chat server in python and got quite far as a noob in the language. I am having 1 problem at the moment which I want to solve before I go further, but I cannot seem to find how to get the problem solved. It is about a while loop that continues.. in the below code is where it goes wrong while 1: try: data = self.channel.recv ( 1024 ) print "Message from client: ", data if "exit" in data: self.channel.send("You have closed youre connection.\n") break except KeyboardInterrupt: break except: raise When this piece of code get executed, on my client I need to enter "exit" to quit the connection. This works as a charm, but when I use CTRL+C to exit the connection, my server prints "Message from client: " a couple of thousand times. where am I going wrong?

• PHP with SQL Injection

  For our first assignment in a System Security class, we have to hack into the professors "cheaply organized" sql database. I know the only user is "admin" and the select statement generated in the php is: select user_id from user where user_username = 'admin' AND user_password = md5('noob') I am having a number of problems attempting to bypass the password part of this statement as the professor has some javascript embedded in the page to sanitize the username and password of any non-alphanumeric values. This can be bypassed by turning off javascript :P but any values sent still get cleaned by the operating system (some build of Debian 32-bit). I've seen the code for the login request and it does not escape any characters. How do I bypass the operating systems escape sequences?

• Is JScript dying? If so, where should I go? [closed]

  I recently poked around Google for a little bit, looking for information about coding JScript. It's very sparse, which surprised me -- it took a link to a link to find Microsoft's own reference, which appears to omit most if not all references to console-based scripting that extends past Javascript. I'm working with the console here, not a webpage, so input and output seems very different than what Microsoft explains. If JScript is dying (and it appears to be so), where do I go from here? VBScript? My options are limited because the computers I'm using this on are carefully patrolled for new software. JScript's similarity to JavaScript was the biggest reason I had chosen it for porting over some of my prior work. I'm specifically looking for, at best, a console scripting language that doesn't need any extra software on Windows XP or higher, that at least supports standard input, output, pause, and file manipulation, little else.

• Why do I need to republish a file when I update it?

  The story is: I am coding a program and at the same time, i want to share it with my group members using ubuntu. They don't have an Ubuntu One account and what I do is to publish the file and my friends just get the link and the file. But, strangely or not, every time I upload a new version of this file (I add more code and save it), the used link seems to be "outdated" and I need to publish the same file again and to get a new link every time i modify the same file. Couldn't it be possible to save a new version of your file and the same link just "points" to the newer version?

• How can I learn to write idiomatic C++?

  I am a computer science student, and as a result, I was taught C++ as a better version of C with classes. I end up trying to reinvent the wheel whenever a solution to a complex problem is needed, only to find sometime after that, some language feature or some standard library routine could potentially have done that for me. I'm all comfortable with my char* and *(int*)(someVoidPointer) idioms, but recently, after making a (minor) contribution to an open-source project, I feel that is not how one's supposed to think when writing C++ code. It's much different than C is. Considering that I know objected-oriented programming fairly well, and I am okay with a steep learning curve, what would you suggest for me to get my mind on the C++ track when I'm coding C++?

  Hi All, Aplogies for the ignorant question, I have no experience with app development on any mobile platform. Basically what I want to know is what communication protocols do apps typically use for accessing/querying centralised services? E.g if I port a webapp/service to iPhone/Andriod, typically how would I access/query this web service in my app? E.g is it over HTTP, or are there other protocols? Also, presumably the GUI of an app is constructed with Apple/Andriod GUI libraries (in java? cocoa?). Can an app GUI be defined with HTML/javascript like a webpage?
