  • How do I boot to a windows recovery partition from GRUB in a Toshiba computer?

    - by Andy Groff
This should be simple but I cannot figure out how to do it. I've been dual booting ubuntu and vista for a while. About 8 months ago, I realized my windows partition got corrupt and does not boot. This wasn't a problem since I didn't need it anyways, but now I do need windows. Using the disk manager I can see a partition called Toshiba System Volume which is 1.6 GB and one called HDD Recovery which is 7.8 GB. I assume the second one is what I need and i'm not sure what the first one is for. Anyways, how do I boot to this one? Is it a matter of configuring GRUB to boot to it? Once I do boot to it will it let me only reformat my windows partition, or is it going to restore the entire hard drive to factory condition? I assume I'll get the general windows installer which lets me choose the partition but, as you can probably tell, I've never used a recover partition. Should I burn the contents of the partition to a disk and boot to that? Sorry if this is obvious but I'm confused and cannot figure this out.

  • Improved Customer Experience, but at what Cost? See the DELL Computer experience with RTD

    - by Richard Lefebvre
We can all probably agree that improving your customers' experience is a good thing. But a key question many people are asking is will it help your organization and, in particular, what are the financial benefits? That's a good question, especially when companies ARE experiencing phenomenal return on investment (ROI). Of course, there are many factors that impact ROI or other measures of success, but we'd like to share some success stories as examples of customer experience in action and delivering positive results. If you would like to learn more about the economics of customer experience, see Brian Curran's presentation at the Oracle Customer Experience Summit last month. In this series of blog posts, we'll share actual customer stories. Today's example is Dell, which uses Oracle Real-Time Decisions (RTD) and Siebel CRM as part of their customer experience portfolio to better understand their customers' needs and wants and provide consistent interactions. Regular readers of this blog are probably familiar with Siebel, but RTD may be new to many of you. RTD is a complete decision management solution that delivers real-time decisions and recommendations and automatically renders decisions within a business process to create tailored messaging for every customer interaction. What does that mean? In the video below, Dell describes how customer experience is important not just for one interaction channel, but across all "vehicles." RTD is helping Dell understand customer behavior and communicate with the customer in a more relevant manner, across all communication  or interaction channels including sales and service call centers, email marketing and online. Dell continues to expand use of RTD because the benefits are showing up in sales, service and marketing results including 19% increase in close rates, faster issue resolution and 40% improvement in revenue per click in email marketing. • How do you apply proxy settings per computer instead of per user?

    - by Oliver Salzburg
So far, I've used a user group policy object utilizing Internet Explorer maintenance to set a proxy for the user in IE. We have now deployed the Enterprise Client (EC) starter group policy to our domain and this policy affects this behavior. The EC group policy uses the policy Make proxy settings per-machine (rather than per-user). This policy describes itself as: This policy is intended to ensure that proxy settings apply uniformly to the same computer and do not vary from user to user. Great! This seems to be an improvement over my previous setup. If you enable this policy, users cannot set user-specific proxy settings. They must use the zones created for all users of the computer. What zones and where do I configure the proxy settings for them? I assumed the policy would simply take the user settings and apply them, but that's not what's happening. Now no proxy server is set at all. So my previous settings obviously no longer have any effect. So far, I've only come up with solutions that involved direct manipulation of the Windows registry. Which is fine, I guess, but the way the proxy is configured for users makes it appear as if there could be a higher level approach.

  • Without an internet connection my computer loads programs slowly. With an internet connection they load quickly

    - by Peter pete
Gday. I've a laptop, with 8gb of RAM and a Samsung 830 SSD with about 2/5th of free space out of its 256gb. Win7 64b. Laptop is a Toshiba T130. In the other day I noticed that it took a long time to load a program, for example the python interpreter at the time the computer didn't have access to the home network. In both cases the computer boots quickly. About 40 seconds. Without internet opening the python interpreter, or notepad2.exe, or any program individually takes around 10 seconds. With internet connection (through WiFi) opening the same programs takes about 2 seconds. In both cases, it becomes SSD-instant-quick to open a program from a cold boot. I don't have any network mapped drives. I've tried with AV off (Avast antivirus) and same effect. I've installed all MS updates. I've googled and googled and have found nothing of help. I've run the Samsung SSD magician to "optimise" ssd and that didn't help. What could I do to determine & fix this issue?

  • Prevent collisions between mobs/npcs/units piloted by computer AI : How to avoid mobile obstacles?

    - by Arthur Wulf White
Lets says we have character a starting at point A and character b starting at point B. character a is headed to point B and character b is headed to point A. There are several simple ways to find the path(I will be using Dijkstra). The question is, how do I take preventative action in the code to stop the two from colliding with one another? case2: Characters a and b start from the same point in different times. Character b starts later and is the faster of the two. How do I make character b walk around character a without going through it? case3:Lets say we have m such characters in each side and there is sufficient room to pass through without the characters overlapping with one another. How do I stop the two groups of characters from "walking on top of one another" and allow them pass around one another in a natural organic way. A correct answer would be any algorithm, that given the path to the destination and a list of mobile objects that block the path, finds an alternative path or stops without stopping all units when there is sufficient room to traverse.

  • Does having TRIM enabled affect other hard drives on a computer (and how do you know when Windows is using it)?

    - by Breakthrough
I recently purchased a solid state drive (an OCZ Vertex 2 (80 GB)) to use as my primary operating system partition. I also have three other SATA hard drives of assorted sizes. I successfully installed Windows 7 Professional onto the SSD (works awesome, great response time and transfer rate), and used the other three HDDs for data storage. I was browsing through the Bible of OCZ SSDs, and noticed the following in Section 60-76 - Tweaks and TRIM: Q. How do I know if TRIM is enabled on my OCZ SSD? A. In Windows 7, go to start/run/cmd), type the following: fsutil.exe behaviour query DisableDeleteNotify It should respond back with: DisableDeleteNotify=0 if TRIM support is ready and active. If it's not, then type: fsutil.exe behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0 After a bit of searching on Google, I found similar results elsewhere (set DisableDeleteNotify to 0, which makes sense since for TRIM to work, the solid-state drive needs to be notified when deletes occur (for the garbage collector) unlike a normal hard drive). When I run the query on fsutil, I get the following result: DisableDeleteNotify = 48 Following the instructions I found, I set this to 0 instead of 48. However, I am beginning to wonder. Is this all the proof I really need that the OS is using TRIM? Also, since this applies globally for the computer, is TRIM data being sent to the other hard drives connected to the computer? And if so, would this cause any degradation in disk performance?

  • What exercises counter the back pain of sitting at a computer for 15 hours a day? [on hold]

    - by Sam
I work up to 15 hours a day (not everyday :)) programming. When I do this I get a very sore lower back. I don't want to spend $1000 on a special chair like Joel Spolsky says. I'm sure I'm not alone here. Has anybody encountered this and found an exercise/other method to combat it? Maybe somebody with more physical education than me about opposing muscle groups or something. PS (not working fifteen hours a day isn't an answer, it's how I work best) and it's not off topic as programming is about more than code - it's a verb.

  • What non-computer based programming tools do you consider invaluable? [closed]

    - by Schroedinger
Possible Duplicate: What physical tools do you find useful to work as a programmer? I'm talking about things like whiteboards for process planning, paper for mapping out logic flows, particular books that you've found relevant, things in your workspace that help you think and process what you're working on and how to attack problems. I'm starting out in a corporate environment and want to have an understanding of what tools really work for other programmers to help them work through their problems and solutions.

  • How to uploads to the web work on local networks

    - by Saif Bechan
Let's say I have two computers hooked up as a home network. They both use the same router, and the router is hooked up to the to the net. Now lets say I am working on computer A, and I can access files on computer B. Computer A has a drive that is mounted on computer A as a network drive. Now I want to upload a file to a website. In the browser of computer A I open a browser, and go the website. On the website I select 'upload file', now in the file browser I go to the network drive, and select a file on computer B to upload. What happens in this case. Is the file uploaded directly from computer B to the website, or is the file first transferred to computer A, and then to the website.

  • 7 drived classes with one common base class

    - by user144905
i have written the following code, //main.cpp #include<iostream> #include<string> #include"human.h" #include"computer.h" #include"referee.h" #include"RandomComputer.h" #include"Avalanche.h" #include"Bureaucrat.h" #include"Toolbox.h" #include"Crescendo.h" #include"PaperDoll.h" #include"FistfullODollors.h" using namespace std; int main() { Avalanche pla1; Avalanche pla2; referee f; pla1.disp(); for (int i=0;i<5;i++) { cout<<pla2.mov[i]; } return 0; } in this program all included classes except referee.h and human.h are drived from computer.h. each drived calls has a char array variable which is initialized when a member of a drived class is declared. the problem is that when i declare tow diffrent drived class memebers lets say Avalache and ToolBox. upon printing the char array for one of them using for loop it prints nothing. However if i declare only one of them in main.cpp the it works properly. and the file for computer.h is as such: #ifndef COMPUTER_H #define COMPUTER_H class computer { public: int nump; char mov[]; void disp(); }; #endif ToolBox.h is like this: #ifndef TOOLBOX_H #define TOOLBOX_H #include"computer.h" class Toolbox: public computer { public: Toolbox(); }; #endif finally Avalanche.h is as following: #ifndef AVALANCHE_H #define AVALANCHE_H #include"computer.h" class Avalanche: public computer { public: Avalanche(); }; #endif

  • is it possible to ssh into ubuntu server with keys and from another computer using password?

    - by Sandro Dzneladze
I have ubuntu server at home, and I use SSH keys to log in via terminal from my laptop. Rarely, but mostly from work, I need to access this server, but I dont want to copy keys on my work laptop - Id rather just use plain password for that. So if I enable password log in from ssh config file, it will ask me password on my laptop too even though it contains keys, right? Is there a way to stop this behavior? Thanks.

  • On my computer, will Ubuntu be faster then XP? [closed]

    - by pgrytdal
I was recently given a HP Compaq presario SR1200NX. It has Windows XP installed on it. After having Windows 7, then Ubuntu, I find XP to be really slow. I was wondering if XP is slow? The processor itself is slow? Or a combination thereof? • Computer is dying--what should I be looking for?

    - by Will
Okay, I'm a bit knowledgeable with pooters and such, but i'm confused. My computer is dying slowly, and I'm not sure what part is causing this. Computer details: Vista, dell machine, intel Q6600, 2.4 Core Duo (quad core), standard memory and drive (unknown manufacturer). Symptoms: I would best describe the symptoms as memory corruption. After a couple days on, I start getting applications crashing or failing to open for a lack of "resources". Sounds are corrupted. Onscreen text gets corrupted; the characters of text are garbled, not the pixels on the screen. Video memory seems untouched as I haven't seen any misplaced pixels. Recently I've lost files on disk. I've also experienced errors reporting a supposed lack of disk space, even though I have fifty gigs free. There was one point where I couldn't get to the POST when booting up. After I cleaned everything (see next) this hasn't happened. Diagnostic steps: First thing I did was clean the case. There was a lot of dust buildup on heatsinks, so I cleaned all that up. No help. Next, I disconnected and reconnected everything, from power cables to memory (did not reseat cpu). No change. Last, I ran the standard vista memory diagnostics and ran checkdisk. Both reported no errors found. I have not run any POST tests, now that I think about it. I'm at a loss at this point. Disk appears fine, memory too. I'd expect motherboard issues to result in the thing not booting up, yet it does every time. What should I be looking at? What more can I do?

  • Should students have the right to do exams using a computer?

    - by vemv
In some colleges students are let to use an IDE and Internet and in mine you have to write down your solution in paper. As far as I know, it's pretty much impossible to make a correct non-trivial program on the first try. I'd be fine with no using computers if my teachers assessed my approach instead my code -literally-... that's not the case unfortunately. Which ones are more usual, 'written' or 'coded' exams? And which way is the most adequate?

  • How can I effectively use a netbook and a desktop computer together for programming?

    - by Mana
Currently, in my workspace, I have a netbook sitting off to the side gathering dust while I write code on my desktop. As a result, the only use my netbook gets coding-wise is when I'm writing up a quick Python script to model a given problem or concept in class; I never use it at home for coding, or for anything at all, as it is all possible and faster on my (much more powerful) desktop. I feel like this is wrong and that I should be making better use of my netbook. What effective uses have you found for a netbook and a desktop together when programming (or for software development in general)? What are the merits of this practice?

  • Computer Turns on Briefly then right back off again.

    - by goddamnyouryan
So yesterday I came home from work and went to turn my computer on....it turned on for about 5 seconds then promptly turned right back off again...before I ever saw anything on the screen. I tried again, same result. After several attempts, I've found that the length at which it turns on differs. After trying multiple times in a row, it only stays on for about 3 seconds. If I let it rest for a bit it sometimes will stay on for up to a minute (though it never boots, the screen stays black the whole time). I'm not sure what is causing this issue...I built this computer a little more than 2 years ago and this is the first issue I have ever had with it. I did all the usual checks: -It's not the power switch -The capacitors on the motherboard all seem to be in working order -The PSU seems to be fine as it lights up, fan spins, and will sometimes stay on for about a minute period My hope is that the thermal paste on the cpu has degraded and just needs to be re-applied. Does that seem like a reasonable assumption? I'm going to tear the thing apart and do a minimum system build when I get home, but any heads up as to what I should be looking for would be much appreciated. Any thoughts?

  • After installing Ubuntu my computer boots into GRUB rescue mode after displaying 'no such partition' error message.

    - by VictorVictor5
I wanted Ubuntu on my Gateway Solo Laptop. It had Win98 on the C:\ and WinXP on the D:\. Before the install, I could not boot from CD, but I could boot from floppy. I installed Ubuntu to run alongside Windows XP as that was one of the options. It didn't detect Win98, but I swear it's on there. Install seemed fine and then it asked me to reboot. When I rebooted, I got the message error: no such partition and the grub rescue> command prompt. I've looked around, but some commands, like sudo, don't work. One command I did get to work was set root=(hd0,0) if that helps. I'm a noob, and it was a pain installing Win98 and XP since this system is so old. I don't want to wipe my drive and start all over! Additional details copied from comments Addendum, I restored my master boot record via my Win98 boot floppy and typing in frisk /mbr. But, I'd still like to get ubuntu - any help? If I restored my master boot record - did I delete Ubuntu?

  • Poll: What kind of computer should a corporate provide to their developers.

I have been collecting a poll to almost any developer I find on my way as well as business owners. I have been looking to see what a small development shop, medium size company and a big corporate considers when providing development computers to their software developers. This has being very intriguing to me. In my career I found different software developers, the ones that work always with one product and one framework, as well as the one that keeps a few frameworks and projects. Of course...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • How do I subvert computer idle detection on Windows?

    - by sharptooth
In order to detect user absence GetLastInputInfo() can be used. I want to make GetLastInputInfo() return that I've just used keyboard/mouse all the time - as I've been actively using the computer so that whoever relies on GetLastInputInfo() thinks I'm actively using the computer. Can I use any Windows API functions to achieve that?
