• Installing wireless drivers without internet access [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How can I install and download drivers without internet? (This is related to my other question; my approach there didn't work.) My friend has (I'm quite sure) a Broadcom wireless chipset. However, he doesn't have any wired internet access on the machine, so his only option is to boot into Windows (he is using Wubi) and download packages there. This means we can't use the Hardware Drivers dialog to install the drivers. He can't fetch the repository information, so the Broadcom driver packages aren't showing up in Synaptic. Is there any way to get Wi-Fi working?

• What happens after `ubuntu-bug` has done it's thing?

  Until some time ago you ran apport-bug or ubuntu-bug to start reporting a bug. The system would then open launchpad with your account, upload the collected information and let you add more info to the bug report. Now when I run gksudo ubuntu-bug (for instance with a crash-file as argument) the common bug dialog appears and thats all. Where is the report being sent to? Definitely not to launchpad as a bug report (although in the concrete situation people have been able to file a report about that bug). So: where is this report sent to (and just maybe) how can I still file a bug report from my system (makes uploading of the pertaining files much easier) Could it be that "the system" decided that this would be a duplicate of an already existing bug?

• Visual Studio 2010 Find and Replace With Regular Expressions

  Here is a quick notes about using regular expressions in the VS2010 Find Replace dialog.  1.  To create a backreference, use curly braces (“{“ and “}” ) instead of regular parentheses. 2.  To use the captured backreference, use \1\2 etc, where \1 is the first captured value, \2 is the second captured value, etc. Example: I want to find*: info.setFieldValue(param1, param2); and replace it with: SetFieldValue(info, param1, param2); To do this, I can use the following find/replace values: Find what: {[a-zA-Z0-9]+}.setFieldValue\({[a-zA-Z0-9., ]+}\); Replace with: SetFieldValue(\1, \2); Use Regular Expressions is checked, of course. *If you’re wondering why I’d want to do this – because I don’t have control over the setFieldValue function – its in a third party library that doesn’t behave in a very friendly manner.   I use Opera and have a setup with two monitors. If I want to open a new URL opera -newwindow URL. The outcome differs, if I execute this command in a program on the same screen where Opera is, or on the other. On the same screen everything is fine. I get the message opera: Activated running instance and the new window with the URL is opened. On the other screen, I get a dialog with the following message: It appears another opera instance is using the same configuration directory because its lock file is active: /home/(my name)/.opera/lock and the URL is not shown. That's not only from console, also if I click a link in E-Mail or so. How can I fix this? Window-manager is awesome, if it does make a difference.

  Creating a connection string by hand is quite difficult, however you create a connection string as follows: 1) Create an empty text file in windows explorer and rename it to X.UDL 2) Double click on it and the datalink provider dialog will appear. 3) Select the provider tab. Find the provider for your data access method and click next. 4) Select your source  5) Test the connection and save it. 6) Open X.UDL with a text editor to see your connections string.   I'm using the NoMachine provided NX client on Ubuntu 10.10 running on a laptop. I'm connecting to a FreeNX server that happens to be running on openSUSE. I'm having trouble with keys being incorrect in the remote session. The most noticable example is that when I press up cursor, the screen shot dialog appears instead. As far as I can gather easily, the cursor keys and delete are affected. It's worth noting that it doesn't display the same behaviour if I dual boot to Windows XP, or from a different machine using openSUSE. I'm not really sure where to begin looking. Any suggestions?

• System freeze after opening Wi-Fi menu can boot into the machine and use Internet in recovery mode

  So right now sitting in front of my Alienware area 51 desktop. It has a Broadcom Netlink BCM 5784M gigabit ethernet PCI E card. Most of the time able to get through the login screen and to the main screen if I click on the wireless settings on the top right-hand corner the system immediately freezes the cursor does not move at all keyboards are unresponsive. I was doing some quick Google searching and I found a suggestion to boot into recovery mode I did this and did a apt-get Distribution update which ran successfully installed then I rebooted into the regular system same thing I'm pretty sure it's the network card because even if I don't click the settings if a network related dialog opens such as disconnection or connection the system again immediately freezes. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 ** update 1 ** Just was able to use my system for a little bit however when I went into Firefox and hit the web it again froze so obviously a driver problem but I'm not sure how to get drivers for Broadcom which apparently according to the description on stack-overflow is terrible Any ideas? Sorry for lack of punctuation on an ipad.

  i recently updated Lubuntu to 13.10 and now after some days Thunderbird stopped working. It just won't open.   Hi! There's a bug with the menue of filezilla: When opening filezilla there is no menue list. Very inconvenient because you can't open the "settings"-dialog. There are several workarounds that I tried - none of them really work. change theme while filezilla is running, menue reapperars. Once you close and reopen it the menue is gone again. add "export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0" " to .bash.rc or just call it before starting filezilla. Doesn't have any effect for me - menue still missing. tried "sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk" cause it's obviously to do with unity but the funny thing is even this method has bo effect at all! How can I fix this? How to do the troubleshooting? thx fior reading, p.

• ubuntu 12.04 how do I select a custom program to open specific file type

  I want to set a filetype to be opened by a specific program other than ubuntu's default. I usually right click properties open with and select the application I need. This however does not work in this case. The application I want is not shown in the "open with" dialog and there apparently is no way I can browse to it or type in a custom command like I used to in 10.04. Is this a bug that I should file or a feature that can be worked around?

• wired connection not being recognised in ubuntu 10.04 lts

  I have windows7 installed on my C drive and ubuntu 10.04 lts on my D drive. When I plud the lan cable (ethernet cable) onto the ethernet card of my laptop, windows7 identifies the network correctly without the need for any manual settings and connects me to the network correctly. Unfortunately, in ubuntu, even after plugging in the cable, nothing happens (on the network side). It is only scanning for wireless networks it seems, and doesnt bother about the wired networks. I tried adding a new wired connection and manually entered the physical address which was displayed when i connected to the network using windows. i entered the phy address, and told it to use auto dhcp and saved the dialog bog in ubuntu network connection. Still there is no change, and ubuntu doesnt seem to recognise anything. please let me know how to work with wired connections using ubuntu, and why my wired cable is not being recognized in ubuntu. thanks. PS: I am pretty new to ubuntu/ linux :)

I would like to buy an existing story (it should be dynamic of course — with branching dialogs etc.), or hire someone to write a new one. Please advise, where to go to find such person / service? We're based in Russia, so getting a talented enough native English writer locally is a bit of a problem. Update: To be extra clear: We must get all necessary rights to reuse the story and make a derived work (i.e. the game we're talking about) from it. This is a commercial product. • My application's bounce rate jumped from 30% to 80% overnight

  My application is provided as a service that is embedded in other sites. I have google analytics installed on the login popup dialog which is a page of my application, which is opened from the host site (OAuth). About a week ago, I've noticed a sharp decrease in the number of new users registrations and a jump in the bounce rate (from ~30% to ~80%). This happened without any change in the application. I looked into technical parameters like page load time and error rates, but could not see any change in there. Any ideas what can cause this behavior?

• Logitech Microphone (AK5370) inaudible volume

  I bought this microphone from Amazon last week. It's detected just fine in 12.10. I can see it in the sound preferences. The problem is that the volume is so low as to be inaudible, even when turned up to maximum in this dialog. It is working, as I can see that the meter responds to noise, but it's just too low. alsamixer's control is the same, so that doesn't help. I tried messing around in pulseaudio too, but to no avail. In lsusb it's Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0556:0001 Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co., Ltd AK5370 I/F A/D Converter.

  I am writing an webscrapper, to do the download content from a website. Traversing to the website/URL, triggers the creation of a temporary URL. This new URL has a zipped text file. This zipped file is to be downloaded and parsed. I have written a scrapper in C# using WebClient and its function - DownloadFileAsync(). The zipped file is read from the designated location on a trapped DownloadFileCompleted event. My issue : The Windows 'Open/Save dialog is triggered". • My Brother printer doesn't accept quality settings anymore - what can I do?

  I have a Brother MFC-465CN network printer. It uses the brother-cups-wrapper-bh7 and brother-lpr-drivers-bh7drivers. Now, when I print (which works perfectly fine) I try to print in "fast normal" settings to save some ink. I use LibreOffice and Ubuntus default PDF-viewer to print and set the settings in the print dialog manually. "Fast normal" is the default printing setting (in the Ubuntu GUI printing config). But the printer always prints in "normal" or even "fine" quality settings which takes forever and uses much more ink. So, what can I do about that? Thanks for your help in advance!

• XUbuntu: Open file browser via "run command" menu

  In older Xubuntu versions, if I entered a path to a directory in the "run command" dialog, a thunar-window was opened showing this directory. I found that to be very handy if I would open f.e.g "/tmp", I just needed to press WindowsKey+r, enter /tmp and press enter, there I was. This was also great for URLs (ftp, http etc) Unfortunately, since 12.04, this doesn't work anymore. It seem as if the "run command" is now integrated with the program finder. It still works when I type "thunar ftp://...." or "thunar /tmp", but it's a bit tedious now. Is there a way to restore the old behavior? Note: I'm running a german localization of Xubuntu - I hope I translated "run command" and "program finder" correctly...

• Uploading or attaching files that located on a shared drive doesn't work?

  I have this odd, quite minor, but annoying issue that I am quite perplexed about. Whenever I try to upload a file via my browser(let's say attach a file to an email in GMail), I click 'Browse' button and it opens standard file selection dialog, that doesn't show network drives. Further more if I try to drag a file from a network drive into GMail, it doesn't work either, it just doesn't let me do that. This issue has been around for quite sometime now, and I am just curious if this is something on my side or if it's a bug or a misconfiguration of some sort. FWIW, I am currently running 10.10, network drive is a samba share on NAS. This happens in FF and Chrome and this is only happens with Samba mounts. As a matter of fact, NFS volumes that are located on the same network operate perfectly fine.
