• PPTPD with PAM authentication?

  I need a VPN solution for my company. One requirement is to be able to use the built-in windows VPN client. We are running a Debian Etch server. I've managed to set up PPTPD but the authentication is based on the chap-secrets file. We already have all the user accounts set up on the server, so it'd be nice to use PAM authentication to get user/pass directly from the unix login. Is this possible to achieve and how? If not, is there any other VPN solution that can do this? Don't tell me OpenVPN, it needs additional software to be installed on the Windows machines. :)

• Capistrano deploying to different servers with different authentication methods

  I need to deploy to 2 different server and these 2 servers have different authentication methods (one is my university's server and the other is an amazon web server AWS) I already have running capistrano for my university's server, but I don't know how to add the deployment to AWS since for this one I need to add ssh options for example to user the .pem file, like this: ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "test.pem")] ssh_options[:forward_agent] = true I have browsed starckoverflow and no post mention about how to deal with different authentication methods this and this I found a post that talks about 2 different keys, but this one refers to a server and a git, both usings different pem files. This is not the case. I got to this tutorial, but couldn't find what I need. • Mac Joining Active Directory Still Prompts For Authentication

  My Mac is joined to an Active Directory domain. What I expected to see was the same ease of access to file shares and internal websites that Windows computers joined to the domain experience (i.e., no authentication needed; it just uses Windows Integrated Authentication). Instead I am asked for credentials each time I try to access those shares and protected websites (e.g. SharePoint). Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with my Mac that it prompts me for my username and password for the domain when I access Windows file shares or intranet sites protected by NTLM/Kerberos? • LDAP System Authentication in Ubuntu

  Hi, I'm having a bit of an issue with system authentication against LDAP in Ubuntu. The LDAP server is OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.10, and the client is Ubuntu 10.10 also. I've set up the client by following the "LDAP Authentication" steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html apt-get install libnss-ldap; auth-client-config -t nss -p lac_ldap; pam-auth-update I've done these steps on the server and been able to see LDAP users when running getent passwd. Doing the same steps on the client, getent passwd does not return any LDAP users. Any ideas?

• LDAP Authentication for multiple AD Domains

  I have 3 full trust domains (2 child and one root). I need to use LDAP to allow authntication for domain users. The trick is that I need the application to use an AD server for the child domain BUT proxy the LDAP query and authentication for the root domain. I see that it maty be possible with AD LDS and some trusts and synching, but it looks pretty hairy and overly complicated. The short of it is: 3 domains (Parent, ChildA, ChildB) My 3rd party app will need to use ChildA domain servers to authenticate either: a. a user in the parent domain or b. a user in the ChildB domain I already have full trusts between all domains, and regular NTLM authentication works fine (unless you are trying to authenticate with LDAP)

  hello, I have configured and fixed almost all the problems with my postfix +courier + mysql setup for virtual mailboxes. I can now receive mail and send it from webmail (squirrel). BUT, what I can't do is authenticate from outside client. Since my isp blocks port 25 I setup postfix to work on 1025 for smtp and setup verbose loging. Here is the verbose log of a failed authentication process LOG Authentication for imap and pop3 seem to be working but this one is not. Here is the postconf -n output. Also through mysql I can verify that it is trying to validate through the system, running a query that returns the encrypted password stored in the database. I can't seem to find the error for this. thank you in advance

  My Linux server is connected to AD via Bind DN and password (without domain joining). It is using sssd for authentication. I am able to ssh and login without any issue. I have a proper setup of uid and guid, etc. .. There is no issue with logging to the linux server. I want the samba service to use AD accounts, but I can't find documentation for how to configure it in this case. Can anyone explain how to configure samba to use active directory for authentication on a system using sssd?

• Postfix, saslauthd, mysql, smtp authentication problems

  Trying to get authentication on my mail server (ubuntu 10.04) running but am having trouble. I have a server with postfix for smtp setup, imap server with courier setup. My postfix authentication is using cyrus (I haven't tried dovecot really) saslauth. The user name and password is stored in a MySql database. Logging in with imap-ssl works on a remote client (thunderbird), and I can read my mail. I can't get the SMTP side working, and have focused the issue down to saslauth. Testing with testsaslauthd -u 'username' -p 'passowrd' -s smtp returns connect() : Permission denied the password in the database is encrypted and I guess this testsaslauthd will take a plain text password and encrypt it. Looking for someone to walk me through getting this working. Im new to the mail server, and have never got one fully working. Thanks. Ask me which log files I should look at/post, which tests to run, permissions to check.

• SASL (Postfix) authentication with MySQL and SHA1 pre-encrypted passwords

  I have a Rails app with the Devise authentication gem running user registration and login. I want to use the db table that Devise populates when a user registers as the table that Postfix uses to authenticate users. The table has all the fields that Postfix may want for SASL authentication except that Devise encrypts the password using SHA1 before placing it in the database. How could I go about getting Postfix/SASL to decrypt those passwords so that the user can be authenticated properly? Devise salts the password so I'm not sure if that helps. Any suggestions? I'd likely want to do something similar with Dovecot or Courier, I'm not attached to one quite yet.

  I have 10 ip's on a VPS and squid3 installed. I want to lease all of them to 10 co-workers. The authentication should be ip-based. Basically I want to allow only their home ip address (not internal - we're not on a network) to connect to my squid. I would also like to offer them a dedicated ip from my outgoing addresses. I managed to get it working using username/password based authentication but some software do not support that feature so I would like to switch to this limit if possible. Any guidance/sample acl's?

  IIS noobie here. I have an intranet website hosted by IIS (6? I'll check after the weekend) that is set to Windows Authentication. Whenever there is some sort of authentication failure, the website gives the user a windows account sort of password prompt and doesn't display a 403 (or 401 or whatever) page unless the user cancels the prompt. However, entering a password is never, ever a use case for this website. Is there a way to turn off the password prompt and just display the error page? Bonus: are there any good hooks for this precise point for code that would do diagnosis and logging?

• SQL Server Reporting authentication not working

  I'm not exactly sure what went wrong but our SQL Server Reporting Services authentication is no longer working correctly. When I try to load the site, it asks for a username and password, and mine doesn't work. I checked the service and it is using the NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService to logon. Since it is using NetworkService to logon, I read on Microsoft's site that I need to use these settings in the RSReportServer.config file: <AuthenticationTypes> <RSWindowsNegotiate /> </AuthenticationTypes> <EnableAuthPersistence>true</EnableAuthPersistence> Which is what I have set. It still asks for the password. When I set the Authentication to RSWindowsNTLM, it does login but everytime I click on a link, it asks for a password (the password doesn't seem to prevent anything from loading). Anyone know what is going on here? I'm not an expert to SQL Server so I may be missing something.

  For some reason every once in a while it happens that my IPSec authentication is from a user account to a computer account, not computer to computer. How can I fix it? Sometimes - notably when I try to add a new workstation through ePO but it's happened other times as well I'm getting strange behavior from my Windows Advanced Firewall IPSec. This causes the authentication to be invalid (as the group memberships, etc all assume computer accounts). I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it but the IDs to match up between servers (the opposite server in my second example has remote ID timb).

  So I am trying to set up a remote access VPN using the free ShrewSoft vpn client: https://www.shrew.net/software I want to use a PSK as the authentication mechanism combined with XAuth so that a connection requires a valid username/pass combo. Under the authentication tab this particular VPN Client however is asking for a Local Identity and a Remote Identity. The options for Local Identity Type are: Fully Qualified Domain Name User Fully Qualified Domain Name IP Address Key Identifier The options for Remote Identity are: Any Fully Qualified Domain Name User Fully Qualified Domain Name IP Address Key Identifier My current thinking is that I can use the Fully Qualifed Domain Name provided by the remote firewall for the Remote Identity, but I do not know what it wants for local identity. Just to stress: I am not trying to set up a site to site VPN. Can anybody shed any light on what I am missing here? A screenshot can be provided if that would be helpful. The current error I am getting during the connection is: IKE Responder: Proposed IKE ID mismatch

  I've setup postfix as smarthost with different relayhosts and sender dependant authentication. Everything works ok, but I have a performance question. Is it better to send all the email corresponding to a domain through only one account? I mean, now I'm sending each message authenticating to the relay host with the sender credentials. Example: If I have 5 email accounts and I send 10 simultaneous messages from each account, How many times is postfix login to the relay host if I have sender dependant authentication? 5 times? once for each sender 50 times? once for each message If I send all the messages corresponding to one realy host through one account, how many times does postfix login to the relay host? only once? • Social Media Talk: Facebook, Really?? How Has It Become This Popular??

  If you have read some of my previous posts over the past few years either here or on my personal blog David's Journal on Tap you will know I am a Social Media enthusiast. I use various social media sites everday in both my work and personal life. I was surprised to read today on Mashable.com that Facebook now Commands 41% of Social Media Trafic. When I think of the Social Media sites I use most, the sites that jump into my mind first are LinkedIn, Blogging and Twitter. I do use Facebook in both work and in my personal life but on the list of sites I use it probably ranks closer to the bottom of the list rather than the top. I know Facebook is engrained in everything these days - but really I am not a huge Facebook fan - and I am finding that over the past 3-6 months my interest in Facebook is going down rather than up. From a work perspective - SM sites let me connect with candidates and communities and they help me talk about the things that I am doing here at Oracle. From a personal perspective SM sites let me keep in touch with friends and family both here and overseas in a really simple and easy way. Sites like LinkedIn give me a great way to proactively talk to both active and passive candidates. Twitter is fantastic to keep in touch with industry trends and keep up to date on the latest trending topics as well as follow conversations about whatever keyword you want to follow. Blogging lets me share my thoughts and ideas with others and while FB does have some great benefits I don't think the benefits outweigh the negatives of using FB. I use TweetDeck to keep track of my twitter feeds, the latest LinkedIn updates and Facebook updates. Tweetdeck is a great tool as it consolidates these 3 SM sites for me and I can quickly scan to see the latest news on any of them. From what I have seen from Facebook it looks like 70%-80% of people are using FB to grow their farm on farmville, start a mafia war on mafiawars or read their horoscope, check their love percentage, etc...... In between all these "updates" every now and again you do see a real update from someone who actually has something to say but there is so much "white noise" on FB from all the games and apps that is hard to see the real messages from all the 'games' information. I don't like having to scroll through what seems likes pages of farmville updates only to get one real piece of information. For me this is where FB's value really drops off. While I use SM everyday I try to use SM effectively. Sifting through so much noise is not effective and really I am not all that interested in Farmville, MafiaWars or any similar game/app. But what about Groups and Facebook Ads?? Groups are ok, but I am not sure I would call them SM game changers - yes there is a group for everything out there, but a group whether it is on FB or not is only as good as the community that supports and participates in it. Many of the Groups on FB (and elsewhere) are set up and never used or promoted by the moderator. I have heard that FB ads do have an impact, and I have not really looked at them - the question of cost jumps and return on investment comes to my mind though. FB does have some benefits, it is a great way to keep in touch with people and a great way to talk to others. I think it would have been interesting to see a different statistic measuring how effective that 41% of Social Media Traffic via FB really is or is it just a case of more people jumping online to play games. To me FB does not equal SM effectiveness, at the moment it is a tool that I sometimes need to use as opposed to want to use. • CAS auth fails while migrating wordpress-mu from apache to IIS

  Having an issue migrating a wordpress-mu installation that I have running with cas authentication enabled (using wpcas and phpcas 1.1.0) from apache on an ubuntu machine to IIS on a windows 2008 machine. While CAS authed fine under linux, I'm getting a "CAS Authentication failed! You were no authenticated." page that pops up whenever I enter in a correct login. Of course there are simpler options like only allowing specific IP or mac addresses, but policy requires something more secure than this. So, are there any modems with 802.1x wired authentication? • Facebook Connect Publish to Stream: how do I tag a user?

  I have an application that allows martial arts trickers to 'battle' each other by initiating challenges and submitting videos and whatnot. When user A challenges user B, the application posts to the user's wall (the one who initiated the challenge). My question is how do I tag user B in the wall post? It essentially says "challenged John Do to a battle". I'd like "John Do" to link to his profile just like when you manually post something on your wall and use the @ symbol. I hope this makes sense. I've tried standard html for a link, and I've tried FBML. Neither are parsed and only render as plain text on the wall post. Thanks for any help!
